8. Hole Centers: Center of one hole to the center of adjacent hole.

9. Bars: (metal between perforations) Specify width of bar at point where perforations are closest.

10. Blank Margins: dimensions of blank margins, parallel width and length (+ or - tolerance). Cost increases when blank margins are required.

Round Hole Patterns

The rule of thumb for perforating is that the hole diametershould not be less than the thickness of the material. The closer to a 1-to-1 ratio, the higher the probability of tool failureand the greater the precautions necessary to avoid it.

Modifications can be made in certain instances at additionalcosts. For stainless steels and similar higher strength materials,it is preferable to specify at least three thickness gauges thinnerthan hole diameter.

The same general rule applies to bar width. The bar widthshould be greater than material thickness because of theincreased number of punches and, therefore, increased perfora-tion tonnage. The bar width can be adjusted at increased costs.

NON HEAT-TREATED PLATECSA-QUALITY STEEL is the standard materialfor Cross screen plate and exceeds industryspecifications. It was developed in cooperationwith leading steel producers to specific chemicaland physical properties, extremely close tolerances, and uniform quality. Rockwell hard-ness rating of 85 B. Rolled and treated fortoughness, strength and freedom from brittle-ness, CSA steel contains a minimum Carbon .30alloyed with other abrasion-resisting elements.

. . . metallurgical, engineering and productiondepartments have combined efforts in the devel-opment of a genuine hardened-and-temperedperforated screen plate, NS-280. It has a mini-mum hardness rating of 280 Brinnell throughoutits entire thickness.This provides lower cost per ton of screenedmaterial. Additional savings are realized fromincreased production due to fewer screenchanges and reduced maintenance costs. NS-280 is available in all perforation types.

Consider the advantages of perforated screen plate!l Screen Life - Special alloyed steel provides wear

resistance to outlast any oil-tempered wire cloth.l Less Down Time - This means fewer changeouts

during production which are extremely costly.l Ease of Maintenance - Perforated screens will not

stretch so no re-tensioning is required during service life of the screen section.

l Screen Frame Protection - Blanked areas are designed and engineered into perforated to protect screen support frame.

l Greater Choice - Round, hexagon, square or slotted; straight or staggered centers; precise, flexible configu-ration and virtually infinite pattern possibilities.

l Wider Material Thickness Range - Wide range of thickness for each opening size. Bar width and plate thickness can be separately specified to attain desired open space while maintaining increased wear life.

l Excellent Screening Efficiency - Perforations are staggered in direction of flow. The percent of open area of Perforated Screen Plate equals or exceeds the percent open area in wire cloth in many cases.

l Resistance to Plugging - Screen Plate features cleanwalled, conical, closely and uniformly spaced perfora-tion. This results in a minimum of binding, because material is always passing through a progressively larger opening.

l Maintenance of Sizing Accuracy - Since Screen Plate is a single unit, there is no wire movement which would interfere with sizing accuracy as the screen wears through.

l Greater Bulk/Less Breakage - Greater effective cross sectional area compared to wire cloth screen. This translates into greater screen life with no open area reduction.

l Fewer Wear Causes - Perforated Screen Plate and wire cloth wear from material passing over and throughthe screen. Wire cloth also wears from wires rubbing each other at junction points.

Screen Width: the dimension at right angles toflow of material, if hook flanges are requiredspecify width measured outside hook flanges.Screen Length: the dimension parallel to flow ofmaterial, with revolving screens specify overalllength of screen section.Circular or Conical Screens: diameterinsideor outside; type of jointbutt or lap (fastened withsplice plates, clamps or welded); number ofpieces to the round.Flanging: are pieces to be flanged up or downand flange type.Bolt Holes: location (if required) and type: round,oblong, square or countersunk. Send sketchwhen possible.Burrs: burrs to inside or outside.Crowned Screens: state amount of crown mea-sured at centerline. Unless otherwise specified,standard crown for screens 3/16" thick and heav-ier will be furnished as follows:

Balance Shearing - (LWD only. Expanded to SWD dimension) providesmatching sections for continuous catwalk or flooring applications. Closeddiamonds SWD, cut with either open or closed diamonds to obtain orderedlength LWD.Bond - apex of the opening where strands intersect.Camber - measured placing straight edge on concave side of sheet parallelto LWD touching both ends of the sheet. Maximum distance from edge ofexpanded metal to straight edge is the camber. (A sheet may have a widthtolerance of 0" and still have a camber.) See Diagram B

Centerline Shearing - finished piece symmetrical, about a row of diamondsat center of pieceopen diamonds both SWD and LWD.Deburring - removal of burrs and sharp edges by wire brushing 9"-72"SWD, 50"-150" LWD. Not all styles will be deburred.Design Size - actual design measured from a point on the bond to a corresponding point on the adjacent bond.Electro-galvanized - a zinc finish for sheets to help provide weather resistance.Flattened Expanded Metal - metal which has been passed through flatten-ing rolls (cold rolled) turning the strands and bonds down to provide a flatsurface. The flattening operation reduces the thickness (gauge) of themetal and stretches the pattern or piece. Abbreviation FXMFlattening - limited to 72" maximum one dimension. Flattened sheet thick-ness shall be 10% of the published thickness.Hot Dip Galvanizing - a protective coating of zinc; may have a roughuneven appearance. Patterns smaller than 1/4" do not lend themselves tohot dip galvanizing.Leveling - a plane of the sheet leveled without flattening strands or bonds.LWD - long way of design nominal dimension (center to center of bond).LWO - long way of opening. The most common cleaning method is an acid orsolvent batch with a water rinse. Aluminumclean with a non-etchingchemical or detergent, then rinse and dry thoroughly. A wax or non-waxbase cleaner can be used.Opening Size - actual opening size of diamond.Out of Square - (measured using 90 angle) Expanded metal sheets are notperfectly square as manufactured. Stock size sheets and machine runsheets will be produced to the following tolerances:
