His music infl uenced countless bands from punk to electronica. Another

bbig inspiration are legendary punk rock icons The Damned. They practicallyyy

iinnvented both the punk and gothic genres, and also incorporated numerousssss

other styles into their music and image, including garage and psychedelia

(((with a dollop of theatrics thrown in for good measure). It’s this diversity thattt t

mmmmakem s music interesting and what Grauzone is about: bringing together andddd

cccccccoonncc ecting different styles of music and underground subcultures, presentinggggggg

ttthhhhhhheeemhh in an intimate setting. Legendary and groundbreaking bands such as THHHHHHEEEEE EEE EH

FFFFFAFAAALLA , or D.A.F. (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft), perfectly fi t our line-uupppppp p

and are sure to deliver quality sets.

Besides broadening our musical horizon (wave, punk, kraut,

eeeeeellece tronica, synth, psych & goth), we focus more on new cutting edge bandsssss..

CCanadian synth band TR/ST and British bands such as TOY, The Wytches,

Lola Colt and Esben and The Witch. This year’s Grauzone

will feature fi fteen amazing young acts from all over the world,

spread out over two days at one venue.

The symposium and fi lm program is spectacular this year. Our guests are

VVVViv Albertine of The Slits, and Mick Harvey (The Bad Seeds, Birthday Party),,,

and will be interviewed by John Robb (the Membranes, Goldblade).

TTTTTThhhhherThT e is so much great music and art to see and hear. Take your time to checcccckkkkkk k k

FRIDAY

HAND OF DUSTOUDE ZAAL – 19:00

Dark post-punk trio Hand of Dust are an

excellent band coming from the unique

Denmark punk/noise scene that has birthed

bands like Ice Age, Lower and Var. They

play electrifying raw post-punk with traces of

blues and neo-folk combined with dark, but

romantic folk lyrics. Think of bands like The

Gun Club, Birthday Party, early Bad Seeds

and Dead Moon.

ESBEN AND THE WITCH

THE MAX – 19:30

Goth-pop-meets-postrock-trio Esben And

The Witch from Brighton have released

critically acclaimed albums on Matador Recs

(Sonic Youth a.o.) and gained a reputation as

a formidable live act. They successfully com-

bine hardrock noise with psychfolk goth. Ra-

chel Davies’ vocals are compared to Siouxsie

and PJ Harvey. Recently released album ‘A

New Nature’ was produced by Steve Albini

and reviews say it’s ‘superb, breathtaking and

impressive’ (NME).

JESSICA 93THEATRE – 19:45

Jessica 93 is a post-punk, shoegaze

one-man-band from Paris. Geoffroy Laporte

creates a hypnotic sound with guitar, loopsta-

tion and drumcomputer.

AGENT SIDE GRINDER

OUDE ZAAL – 20:30

Sweden’s ASG is one of Grauzone’s most ex-

iting electronic bands. Combining the best of

Suicide, Cabaret Voltaire, Kraftwerk, Joy Divi-

sion and Throbbing Gristle, their music is an

uncompromising mix of industrial, post-punk,

EBM, electro and krautrock. Their latest 2012

album ‘Hardware’ was met with universal

acclaim, named “album of the month” in

Vice and won a Swedish Grammy. ASG is a

brilliant live act using only analog equipment,

vintage drum-machines and tape-loops.

Page 7: Grauzone Magazine and Timetable

FRIDAYBO HØYER HANSEN

(HAND OF DUST)

THEATRE – 20:45

Hand Of Dust singer/guitarist Bo will perform

an acoustic solo set featuring his intense dark

and beautifully melancholic folkish songs.

MICHAEL ROTHER PLAYS NEU! &

HARMONIATHE MAX – 21:15

Krautrock legend Michael Rother, was a

member of three infl uential German bands:

KRAFTWERK, NEU! and Harmonia.

The albums of NEU! are considered master-

pieces and infl uenced countless musicians:

David Bowie (who invited Rother and named

his ‘Heroes’ album after a NEU! song), Iggy

Pop, Sex Pistols, Sonic Youth, Radiohead,

PIL, Joy Division/New Order, Gary Numan,

The Fall a.o. His live performances are abso-

lutely stunning, so don’t miss it!

KELUARTHEATRE – 21:45

Berlin based duo Keluar are experimental

minimal synthpop newcomers. Following

the demise of popular London band Linea

Aspera (who played their last show at Grau-

zone 2013), singer Zoè Zanias (aka Alison

Lewis) teamed up with Sid Lamar. Infl uenced

by minimal wave, industrial, deathrock, EBM

and dark techno. Their vinyl EP’s had rave

reviews naming them: ‘brilliant, genius and

astonishing.’ Using analog electronica, their

live shows are haunting and intense.

TRUSTOUDE ZAAL – 22:30

Toronto’s dark electronic pop sensation Trust

plays quite a unique mix somewhere between

synthpop, darkwave, goth and dance, with

a retro 80’s-yet-modern feel. Their sound is

dark and mysterious while remaining catchy,

upbeat and danceable. The highly acclaimed

2012 debut album ‘TRST’ was nominated for

a Juno Award for ‘best electronic album’ and

‘best debut of the year.’ Trust is an excellent

live act known for their outstanding perfor-

mances and frontman Robert Alfons deep

baritone voice, which is as haunting live as it

is on the band’s records. A must see!

7

Page 8: Grauzone Magazine and Timetable

THE FALLTHE MAX – 23:15

The ‘mighty’ Fall as fervent fan BBC DJ

John Peel used to say. British distinctive and

infl uential (post)punk band known for being

an acknowledged infl uence on Sonic Youth

(who covered 3 songs), Nirvana, The Smiths,

Pavement, The Happy Mondays, and Franz

Ferdinand. Singer/bandleader/anti-star Mark

E. Smith rants, shouts and sings off key in

his inimitable and unique style. Shows by

The Fall are legendary and recent reviews

have been raving. The current incarnation of

the band has been together for three albums

now.

CAMERATHEATRE – 23:15

Berlin-based trio Camera, known for their

spontaneous ‘guerilla gigs,’ plays a modern

version of krautrock infl uenced by NEU!,

Can, Amon Duul and mid-period Kraftwerk.

Be prepared for a spectacular trip of heavy

cosmic grooves where time and space have

no meaning.

THE WYTCHESOUDE ZAAL – 00:30

Stand-out hot trio from Brighton plays a

surprising mix of surf, 60’s garage, dark horror

punk and grunge. They sold out most of

their shows in 2014 and their recent debut

‘Annabel Dream Reader’ is ‘one of the most

memorable debut albums of recent times,

brilliant and astonishing’ according to reviews.

Their explosive live performances are full of

energy, featuring a constant stream of stage

dives and mosh pits.

RUDE66THEATRE – 00:45

Rude 66 is a patron of the Dutch Westcoast

electro scene. His sound played an important

role in the development of the Sound of the

Dutch Westcoast and the legendary lo-fi acid

sound of 90’s The Hague. Acid techno, brutal

electro and even weird space-age electronica!

DJ HELENA HAUFFOUDE ZAAL – 01:30

Helena Hauff is DJ and producer hailing

from Hamburg. Her DJ sets are diverse and

can’t be pinned down as she cuts between

dirty acid, chigaco, techno, EBM, minimal

synth and wave. She tours all over the world

alongside acts as Jeff Mills, Dopplereffekt,

Factory Floor, Ron Morelli, Das Ding and now

fi nally at Grauzone.FRIDAY

THE WYTCHES

9

Page 10: Grauzone Magazine and Timetable

A week before you attend Grauzone, your old band Kraftwerk does seven shows in Amsterdam playing their back catalogue. Did you, after you left Kraftwerk, keep in touch or go see one of their shows? And what do you think of Kraftwerk now and their legacy?

I never really stayed in touch with Kraft-

werk after we stopped playing together

in 1971. Klaus Dinger and I moved on

to start the NEU! project. In early 1974

I met Ralph and Florian in Düsseldorf

and played them the recordings for

Harmonia´s album “Musik von Harmonia”

which was released a few months later.

Since that time until earlier this year, I

didn´t see Ralph or Florian and didn´t see

Kraftwerk play live although their music

sometimes came to my attention.

Your albums with NEU! & Harmonia are considered masterpieces and infl uenced countless musicians. You collaborated with Sonic Youth, Brian Eno, Anton Corbijn, a.o. And there is a NEU! tribute compilation with a very impressive list of bands. Did you ever expect this when you started?

I´ve never spent one minute thinking

about maybe fi nding a place in music

history. That didn´t cross my mind at all.

The music was all I cared for and it was

exciting to discover new music from day

to day with my collaborators in Kraftwerk,

NEU! and Harmonia.

Back then, Amsterdam was the hippie capitol of Europe, did you ever play there or visited it?

I played at Melkweg in Amsterdam at

least once or twice in ‘73/’74, Paradiso

too. I have clear memories of the relaxed

audiences there. I look forward to return-

ing to Melkweg and play my current

music at Grauzone.

David Bowie and Iggy Pop were hugely infl uenced by NEU! Bowie named ‘Heroes’ after a NEU! song and contacted you to play on it. Why didn´t you?

That´s a long story, and also quite a

mystery. We can only guess why the

collaboration between David Bowie and

myself didn´t happen in 1977. About 10

years ago David started saying in inter-

views that I had turned down his invitation

to record the album “Heroes” with him

and Brian Eno in Berlin.

SATURDAY

THE WOKEN TREESTHEATRE – 16:45

Danish 6 piece band The Woken Trees plays

raw industrial post-punk and sound like

Joy Division heading for an occult mass at

midnight. Their 2012 debut album ‘NNON’

received very positive reviews, they played

Roskilde 2014 and appeared at this year’s

Wave Gotik Treffen.

THE MEMBRANESOUDE ZAAL – 17:15

Post-punk band The Membranes pioneered

the avant-noise scene of Big Black and Sonic

Youth. They were fi rst to be signed by Crea-

tion records (My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and

Marychain) and recorded with fan Steve Albini

(Big Black, Shellac). In 2009 The Membranes

reunited for a really successful appearance at

the All Tomorrows Parties festival curated by

My Bloody Valentine.

TOYTHE MAX – 17:45

Terrifi c UK psych rockers TOY play an

impressive mix of shoegaze, post-punk,

psychedelica, Krautrock en noise-rock. Their

stunning debut was 2012’s best rock album.

Already selling out many shows in the UK

and headlining shows together with bands

like Soft Moon and Savages, this will be your

chance to see the next big thing!

MICK HARVEYTHEATRE – 18:15

Australian songwriter, musician and producer

Mick Harvey created some of his best and

most infl uential music being a founding

member at the creative cores of The Birthday

Party and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

He left the Bad Seeds in 2009. He worked

extensively with PJ Harvey, and was an

integral part of her gold and platinum record

‘Let England Shake.’ Mick will perform an

exclusive acoustic set featuring songs from

his rich solo career.

Page 15: Grauzone Magazine and Timetable

ZOUNDSOUDE ZAAL – 18:45

Legendary anarcho punks Zounds released

one of the genre’s most inspirational records

in 1981. Their D.I.Y. sound and strong politi-

cal messages left a legacy within the post-

punk community that extended far beyond

their brief fi ve-year career. Zounds returned

in 2010 with a new line up, and after their set

at Grauzone 2012 they will return for another

excellent performance.

D.A.F.THE MAX – 19:45

D.A.F. (Deutsche Amerikanische Freund-

schaft) is an infl uential electropunk / Neue

Deutsche Welle duo from Düsseldorf and

are considered pioneers of Electro punk,

EBM and techno. Gabi Delgado-López

(vocals, lyrics) and Robert Görl (drums,

electronics) recorded several electronic

dance masterpieces with innovative producer

Conny Plank (Kraftwerk, CAN, NEU!, Brian

Eno, Killing Joke). ‘Der Mussolini’ became

an international monster hit in dance clubs.

These electro punk legends will make you

dance ‘til you drop.

SHOPPINGTHEATRE – 19:45

East London three piece post-punk funk

band Shopping’s 2013 debut album ‘Con-

sumer Complaints’ got rave reviews (‘All killer’

according to The Quietus). This is post-punk

with a defi nite 21st Century style reminiscent

of The Slits, The Cure, The Au Pairs, Gang

Of Four, early Talking Heads and Siouxsie

Sioux-like vocals. Their gigs are incredibly fun

and there’s absolutely no way you’ll be able

to stand still. Prepare to dance!

LOLA COLTOUDE ZAAL – 20:30

One of our breaking new bands is described

in the press as 2014’s breakthrough band.

London based Lola Colt is a powerful six

piece. Their mind-bending psychedelia hued

post-punk has seen them play a host of

festivals and sold out shows. Their acclaimed

debut album is produced by Jim Sclavunos

(Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Sonic Youth).

They were amongst the best acts of London

Calling last october. A must see live band!

SATURDAY

Page 16: Grauzone Magazine and Timetable

THE DAMNED

Page 17: Grauzone Magazine and Timetable

THE DAMNEDTHE MAX – 21:30

Legendary punk rock icons The Damned

practically invented punk and goth. They are

credited with releasing the fi rst punk single

(New Rose 1976) and the fi rst punk album.

Then they evolved into one of the forerunners

of the gothic genre (The Black Album 1980).

The Damned are one of those bands that

never seem to age, and with their loud excit-

ing rocking shows still kicking more ass than

most younger bands. Featuring Dave Vanians

spooky vocals, Captain Sensible’s screeching

guitars, and all their classic songs, their show

will be a truly spectacular experience!

THE OSCILLATIONTHEATRE – 21:15

London-based The Oscillation is mixing

krautrock with PIL’s dub post-punk and

Hawkwind’s space-rock. Their 2013 third

album ‘From Tomorrow’ has won acclaim

from all corners of the world. Accompanied

by a trippy analogue psychedelic light show

they had a very successful year including

playing several big festivals. Tune in, turn on,

oscillate!!!

CLAN OF XYMOXOUDE ZAAL – 22:15

In the mid 80’s Darkwave/goth band Clan Of

Xymox was a pioneer of dark electro-gothic

music and released their fi rst albums on

the legendary 4AD label (Dead Can Dance,

Cocteau Twins, Bauhaus, Birthday Party).

Bandleader Ronnie Moorings’ vocals have

been described by some as THE defi nitive

goth voice. Clan of Xymox is still relevant and

popular, headlining many international fests.

17

SATURDAY

Page 18: Grauzone Magazine and Timetable

The truth is I didn´t turn down his invita-

tion at all. We both were very enthusiastic

about the idea of collaborating and we

talked about details on the phone.

My interpretation of what went wrong is

that someone around David decided to

prevent him from being exposed to more

crazy ideas of experimentation. It´s a fact

that at the time Bowie´s albums sales

were going down and fans didn´t appreci-

ate his change towards experimentation

with ideas that were infl uenced by music

of Kraftwerk, NEU! and Harmonia. He

openly confessed being very interested in

and impressed by our music.

Anyway, after my talk with David, I

received a phone call from someone in

his management, who wanted to discuss

money with me. I told him not to worry

about contracts or money, as long as the

music was good, the legal and fi nancial

stuff wouldn´t be a problem. I think my

attitude scared the guy.

The next thing that happened was that I

received a phone call from an assistant to

David who told me that I wasn´t needed in

Berlin, that David had changed his mind.

At the time I was very busy preparing

my second solo album “Sterntaler” and

enjoying the unexpected huge success of

my fi rst ‘Flammende Herzen.’

Grauzone bands like The Fall are huge NEU! and Can fans. DAF also recorded with your producer Conny Plank, and Camera were even part of your band at some point. Several other young bands like The Oscillation also pay debt to your sound. Are you famil-iar with these bands and do you keep track of new bands or new music?

I played as Rother & Moebius together

with The Fall at a festival in France in

2005 and we met and spent some time

together there, which was nice. But

unfortunately I´m not familiar with their

music. Dieter Moebius is a big fan of

Mark E. Smith and The Fall.

I haven´t heard of The Oscillation but

will check them out. To be honest, I´m

usually too focused on my own work to

be able to follow other bands. I enjoy

silence at home most of the time. The

last band that really got me excited is the

Fuck Buttons from the U.K. We met at

ATP in Australia in 2009 when they blew

me away with their uncompromising mu-

sic. Since then they still blow me away...

Some bands take six months or longer to record. You guys were sleeping on the studio fl oor and took

continued from page 10

Page 19: Grauzone Magazine and Timetable

19

two days to record one of the most infl uential records in music history. Is this a classic example of less is more? Why didn’t your label Brain give you more recording time?

Nobody in 1971 or 1972 could foresee

that our music would become so popular.

We paid the studio out of our own pockets

because we wanted to be independent.

We didn´t have much money and so we

had to fi nish the recordings in the available

studio time. I didn´t enjoy the stress of the

studio clock ticking away our time but this

fact did make us focus and fi nd quick solu-

tions. It was like working on music while

running at top speed. We were very lucky

that we managed to fi nish the fi rst NEU!

album in such short time.

As for NEU! 2, many people back then

hated us for the experiments on the B-

side. The experiments were the result of

desperate actions which we had to jump

to in order to be able to present something

resembling an album. We had simply spent

too much time recording the fi rst side.

On the other hand, it´s not guaranteed

that having unlimited time to create music,

like it is the case with affordable home re-

cording gear these days, makes the results

any better. There are defi nitely dangers

to be aware of. I have to remind myself

of these dangers regularly whenever I´m

working on new music, like the fi lm scores

which I have created in recent years.

You’ve been playing all over the world at festivals like ATP. Reviews of your shows say they’re absolutely stunning and blowing the minds of the

crowds. What can we expect from the Amsterdam show, and who’s playing in the line-up?

My current live line-up consists of Hans

Lampe and Franz Bargmann. Hans

played drums along with Thomas Dinger

(Klaus’ brother) on the B-side of NEU! ´75

and later was a member of La Düsseldorf.

Franz is a young guitar player from Berlin

who became known as a member of the

Berlin based band Camera, with whom he

recorded their fi rst album.

In recent years my live performances

have been going really well. It´s so won-

derful and rewarding to discover countries

with music and to experience the reac-

tions from crowds in different cultures. I

won´t try to describe the music but I hope

that the audience at Grauzone will feel

the excitement and the joy which is at the

heart of my music.

Thanks Michael and looking forward to see you!

We talked some more with Michael, and asked him, amongst other things, about a fax his NEU! bandmate Klaus Dinger sent to him, saying ‘lick my ass’. Read his answer on www.grauzonefestival.com/interviewmichaelrother

operated. Especially for Grauzone Festival, he will come to Amsterdam to be interviewed

about the book and his experiences with Zounds.
