Charles John Huffam Dickens was an English novelist, generally considered the greatest of the Victorian period. Dickens enjoyed a wider popularity and fame than had any previous author during his lifetime, and he remains popular, having been responsible for some of English literature's most iconic novels and characters.

Unlike other authors, many of his writings were originally published serially, in monthly or yearly installments which Dickens himself helped popularize at that time. After that period, some of his writing published as novels.

Dickens' work has been highly acquired famous by its realism, comedy, mastery of prose, unique personalities and concern for social reform by writers such as Leo Tolstoy, George Gissing and G.K. Chesterton.

Although others, such as Henry James and Virginia Woolf, have criticized it for sentimentality and implausibility.

About the book

It was first published in serial (As the most of the others) form in the publication All the Year Round from 1 December 1860 to August 1861. It has been adapted for stage and screen many times (over 250 times).

In my words, Great Expectations is a process that shapes Pip’s life in the way of love, revenge, and desire. It is all about Pip’s life and for Pip.

Point of View

It is written in the first person from the point of view of the orphan Pip (Main Character). It draws on his experiences of life and people. ( Like much of his work)

Settings

Mainly in Pip’s village environment : His home Joe’s forge (Blacksmith) Miss Havisham’s mansion (Satis House)

In London : Jagger’s house Wemmick’s house Herbert’s and Pip’s house( They live together)

THEMES

The main themes are in the triangle of love, revenge, and desires.

Bentley Drummle = Estella’s husband. However, he is the most repulsive of Pip’s acquaintances.

Summary

Pip saws a convict on marshes who wants food and a file from him. He was Abel Magwitch who has many secrets.

Pip was apprenticed at Miss Havisham mansion.

In there, Estella pulls his leg and he vows to become gentleman.

However, he tinks that Miss Havisham burst Pip’s bubble.

He was ashamed of himself and things which is about him.

At that time, his sister was threatened by someone. Her temper was gone with this ivent and Biddy came to look for her.

By the time, in the pub, Joe and Pip recognized a stranger with “smell of soap”. That was Jaggers who announces that there is a benefactor to help him.

He goes to London and Wemmick. He brings him to Herbert Pocket (his best Friend). He finds from Herbert that Miss Havisham wants to take revenge from all men.

He invented in to dinner at Wemmick. At there, he recognized that Wemmick is very unusual person.

The next day, Jaggers invited Pip to dinner and he sees there Jaggers servant (tigress).

Back to Satis House, he recognizes the beauty of Estella ones again. Also, there was a similarity on her face.

In there, Pip roams every looks at him. A letter, announces that the death of

Mrs. Joe Gragery, brings Pip home.

Back to London, he thinks his love and fear to Estella and finds out that Drummle courts to her.

One night, a sixtish warn men comes to his home at his birthday. Firtsly, Pip despises him. However, he recognizes that he was the man marshes and he is his benefactor.

He was escaping from law. Pip decided to hide him.

(Telling the story) Magwitch was the man of Compeyson who gets down his bad jobs to him. Herbert also says that Compeyson was the person who left Miss Havisham on their wedding day.

Again back to Satis House, he sees Estella in the same room and says that he loves her. However, she was married.

In London, he learns that he is under danger from Wemmick.

By the time, he understoods that “tigress” is Estella’s mother.

He goes Miss Havisham’s house to the same room and speaks with her. He goes outside and comes inside. He finds her on fire.

Pip learns Magwitch is Jaggers’ servant’s dusband.

They decided to escape from Compeyson, but they get busted him on boat. Magwitch and he wrestles under water and Compeyson dies. Polices arrests Magwitch.

Pip falls into fever and Joe take care of him.

Pip goes for forgivness to Joe’s family, Herbert’s family.

Pip meets Estella again and story ends.

UNFAVORABLE PARTS

he boring part in this book is being like a Turkish movie.

Not to insult Turkish movies, but the ending is

predictable from before.

lso, some irrelevant parts makes the book meaningless. I

couldn’t understood the burning of Miss Havisham.
