Wally TurnerChairman of the Board

Dear Friends, On behalf of over 8,000 disadvantaged and at-risk children served by Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, I extend my most heartfelt thanks for your contributions that have exceeded our expectations during the first two quarters of 2016. We are very fortunate to have had your support. In addition, I am delighted to announce that The Winter Ball will be chaired by Mrs. Rudolph Giuliani and be held February 3, 2017 at The Breakers. Judith and her team are already busy at work planning a most wonderful evening and to ensure great financial success. Sadly, we received word on Sunday, June 12 that our friend and longtime benefactor Marjorie Fisher passed away at her home in Palm Beach surrounded by her loving family. Marjorie leaves an amazing legacy of philanthropy, touching so many lives in so many places. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County is forever grateful to her for providing two incredible and state of the art 22,000 square foot clubhouses. One named ‘The Max’ for her late husband located in Riviera Beach on 13th Street. The other called ‘The Marjorie’ on Belvedere Road in West Palm Beach. Through her generosity, hundreds of children from low income homes have safe places to go each day after school and during the summer. I invite you to tour one or both of these facilities to personally witness the impact these places are having on kids. Marjorie was not just a check writer but someone who deeply cared about our children and their outcomes. Her credo was “all giving starts with the heart…and then you use your head.” We are blessed that our children captured her heart and privileged that our organization was worthy of her gifts. Her life’s philosophy is one to emulate. “You are here for a reason-to help other people. Everything in life is based on love and what you can do to help others. The rest is just cream-sometimes sour cream-but it’s still cream” she often said. The entire agency extends their deepest condolences to the Fisher family. Marjorie is survived by her children: Julie Fisher Cummings, Mary Fisher, Phillip Fisher, Jane Sherman, Marjorie Fisher Furman and 37 grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will always remain in our hearts. Respectfully,

Belle Glade Club Teen Winner of Philanthropy Tank

Making a Difference In Our Community

Teen Center Club member and Youth of the Year Je’Cynthia Nonar knows all too well what it is like to live in an area plagued with poverty and crime. As a resident of Belle Glade, being woken up at night by gun shots is just part of her life. Nonar has experienced tragedy first-hand through events that have impacted the lives of her family, but this bright and passionate teen is determined that she can make a change in her community. “We want people to develop a better outlook on the

Glades so we decided that this would be accomplished by implementing the very first Glades Teen Summit,” stated Nonar during the final Philanthropy Tank Challenge competition that took place on March 17, 2016 at the Harriet Himmel Theatre in West Palm Beach.

“Violence isn’t the only issue affecting the Glades. There are a lot of other issues that we must address such as teen employability. In Belle Glade my friends and I find it increasingly difficult to get employment due to the fact that most of the jobs offered are for those older than 18, leaving us with little to no opportunities. During this critical stage in our lives, we as adolescents need something that can teach us responsibility and time management. What better way to learn these things than a job,” continued Nonar.

The Palm Beach Philanthropy Tank offered local middle and high school students an opportunity to create and implement innovative solutions to community issues and social problems in the county. For the challenge, Nonar proposed creating the very first Glades Teen Summit that would not only address the crime issues in Belle Glade but would also provide teens with the

training, experiences and opportunities to become more employable. When asked why she is so passionate about this project, Nonar

responded: “The Glades Teen Summit is something that I’m very proud of. I know that with the assistance of the very generous and hardworking philanthropists, we can bring positive change to the Glades. I love my hometown and I just want to make it a better place.”

It came as no surprise when the panel of philanthropist/ investors which included William Meyer, Julie Fisher Cummings, Danielle Moore, and Eric Becker awarded Nonar her full ask of $15,000. This bright young lady aspires to someday become a lawyer. She is a testament that Great Futures do start at the Boys & Girls Clubs.

FPL SolarNow™ Helps Boys & Girls Clubs ShineAre you ready to help bring more solar to the Sunshine State while supporting the Boys and Girls Clubs?

The organization is partnering with FPL on an innovative program designed to do just that! FPL SolarNow™ is a voluntary, community-based solar program that builds solar canopies in public

spaces, like parks, zoos and museums. These solar arrays feed emissions-free energy generated from the sun directly to the electric grid. And, the solar structures provide shaded areas for covered parking or sitting – perfect for hot summer days! For about $9 a month or 30 cents a day, residents, businesses and organizations can sign up to participate in FPL SolarNow and help bring more solar projects to our communities.

“FPL believes in the power of solar and the impact it will have on our future, and we are committed to giving back to the communities we serve,” said Thomas Bean, Director of Public & Community Engagement for FPL. “This program provides another opportunity for customers to advance solar in their community and a way to support organizations that matter to them, such as the Boys & Girls Clubs.”

Solar energy isn’t the only benefit FPL SolarNow delivers. The charitable foundation of NextEra Energy, Inc., (FPL’s parent company) contributes a total of $200,000 annually to Florida-based non-profit organizations dedicated to helping the environment and our community, including Boys and Girls Clubs. When you sign up for FPL SolarNow, you get to select an organization you would like to receive a portion of the contribution. The amount that each organization receives is proportionate to the selections made by FPL SolarNow participants.

In 2015, Boys & Girls Clubs received the second highest number of votes from FPL’s SolarNow participants and was awarded over $22,000. To date, Boys & Girls Clubs remains strongly positioned in second place. To learn how you can get involved visit www.fpl.com/solarnow
