GREAT-LMTV09/ Young Guardian Club Borobudur Mentoring Program/
Borobudur Compound temple, Magelang, Central Java/Heri,Edu/ First
Tuesday/Wednesday every month except June & Dec 2017 /18+/2vols
Project: GREAT is taking part in the effort of protection, promotion and conservation of the heritage
sites in Indonesia. One of them is Borobudur Compound. Borobudur is listed in the World heritage List
UNESCO since 1991 (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/592). The main and still issue of Borobudur
conservation is the mass tourism. At least three millions of domestic and international visitors step on
the temple every year, this brings at least 150 million kg only from the weighs of tourists. The facts that
the visitors step on the temple wearing different surface of shoes cause erosion to the stones. And the
weather brings the unsheltered stones of the temple in higher risk of erosion. Therefore, it is important
to organize sustainable action to raise the awareness of the visitors. At the same time, the involvement
of local community into conservation activities for the temple has been a strong concern.
In consultation with Borobudur Conservation Office (BCO), GREAT combines both issues by engaging
with one local youth who concerns this issue. They are the Young Guardian Club (YGC) Borobudur. The
members of YGC of Borobudur are students of 15-17 years old from the local high schools..

YGC has missions to raise awareness of
Borobudur conservation and its local culture to
local youth and public youth. They carry out
protection activities directly for the temple
including cleaning and out reaching visitors to
promote environment friendly tourist behavior,
and being active for online campaign through
social media. However, the fact that YGC
members are teenage students, they have

challenges of dynamic of motivation, organizational skill, media and communication and so on. GREAT is
committed to mentor them answer those challenges and make sure the capacity building for youth
through this project.
In term of expanding the YGC Borobudur membership and access for more local youth, LMTV for
Borobudur in 2017 will also focus on socializing the world-cultural heritage education, promoting about
international voluntary service, presenting culture exchange and supporting English learning-excercise
activities in some assigned schools, such as SMK 1 Muhammadiyah, SMA Muhammadiyah, SMP
Muhammdiyah, Young Guardian Club members’ schools and others.
In addition, volunteers will have some learning sessions in BCO with their staffs. It is usually
implemented in the beginning of the stay such as the second week or after on arrival training. The
activities include learning about the conservation works and divisions in BCO, its challenges, history of
Borobudur especially its restoration and Borobudur mass tourism information. By having learning
sessions in BCO, volunteers will have some upgraded knowledge that could be shared and presented at
assigned schools. Volunteers are expected to be an active learner during the process. Other possible
learning sessions are with Borobudur Park Enterprise and UNESCO Jakarta Office – Borobudur
Community Development Project.
