DAY 2 – Death Valley National ParkToday we head for the unique landscape of Death Valley National Park.Here, old tales of prospectors with burros, massive wagons pulled by20-mule teams and long-deserted mines continue to fascinate. We stopat Badwater Basin, the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere, Devil’sGolf Course with its jagged saline formations and Zabriskie Point forpanoramic views of the park’s colored badlands, salt flats and distantpeaks. Next we visit the Furnace Creek Visitor Center and the ruins ofthe Harmony Borax Works before checking in for a two-night stay.Meals: B, D

DAY 3 – Goldwell Open Air Museum and Rhyolite Ghost TownWe begin the day by returning briefly to Nevada to explore the hugeoutdoor sculptures created by Belgian artists at the Goldwell Open AirMuseum. Then we visit the once ‘rip-roaring’ gold mining communityof Rhyolite, and authentic ghost town. Back in Death Valley, we head tothe Stovepipe Wells area where we take a walk on the extensiveMesquite Flat Sand Dunes. We also make a stop at the Salt Creek Inter-pretive Trail before returning to the lodge. Meals: B, L

DAY 4 – Manzanar National Historic Site and Randsburg Ghost TownLeaving the park, we pass the dry Owens Lake which was drained toprovide a water supply for the City of Los Angeles, and come to Man-zanar National Historic Site. This is an intensely moving and heart-breaking reminder of the remote internment camps created to houseJapanese-Americans during the dark days of World War II. DAY 5 – Route 66 and Oatman Ghost TownOn historic Route 66 we stop in Oatman, Arizona, the colorful ghosttown and mining camp where ‘wild’ burros, descendants of those leftbehind by miners, greet tourists on Main Street. There are numerousgift, antique and craft shops, saloons and the historic Oatman Hotel toexplore. We also stop in Seligman, “The Birthplace of Historic Route66,” featuring 1950s-era stores and restaurants, including the RoadkillCafé. Meal: B

DAY 6 – Grand Canyon National Park and Wupatki National MonumentToday we come to the South Rim of the magnificent Grand CanyonNational Park. Truly one of the world’s great spectacles, we travelalong the rim with stops at several scenic overlooks, including MatherPoint, Grand View Point and Desert View. Later, we explore the splen-did prehistoric ruins at Wupatki National Monument, remains of acomplex thought to have been occupied by ancestors of the modern-day Hopi Tribe before coming to the heart of Sedona’s renowned RedRocks Country. DAY 7 – Red Rocks Jeep Tour and Verde Canyon RailroadThis morning, a guided “Red Rocks Jeep Tour” takes us into Sedona’senchanting backcountry where natural wonders include dramaticcliffs, towers, monoliths and mesas of bright red sandstone in fantasti-cally carved shapes. We stop at the historic copper mining ghost townof Jerome before boarding our first-class car on the Verde Canyon Rail-road, for a unique 40-mile rail excursion through a beautiful protectedwilderness abundant in bald eagles, great blue herons, deer and javeli-nas. Tonight, we enjoy dinner before returning to the hotel. Meals: B, D

DAY 8 – Sedona Trolley Tour and LaughlinA narrated Trolley Tour of Sedona includes a stop at the inspiringChapel of the Holy Cross, overlooking the town and neighboring redrocks. A visit to the Tlaquepaque arts and crafts complex is followedby a stop in the downtown area. Our afternoon begins with a scenicdrive through splendid Oak Creek Canyon, before continuing toLaughlin, Nevada’s casino resort center on the banks of the ColoradoRiver. Meals: B, D
