Eric ClaptonCrossroads

Guitar Festival 3 The best often attracts the best. That truism is demonstrated in this special as Eric Clapton leads a veritable Who’s Who of guitar greatness at the third Crossroads Guitar Festival. Considered one of the all-time great guitarists in rock history, Clapton gathers other stars onto one stage for an all-day musical event in front of a crowd of more than 27,000 at Chicago’s Toyota Park in June 2010. The sold-out, 11-hour tour de force provides profits to The Crossroads Centre in Antigua, a treatment and education facility founded by Clapton for chemically dependent people. Highlights include appearances by Clapton, ZZ Top, Steve Winwood, Jeff Beck, Sheryl Crow and Buddy Guy as well as behind-the-scenes footage and candid interviews with the performers. “The Crossroads Festival is the realization of a dream for me, to gather a group of amazingly talented musicians

to perform on one stage,” says Clapton. “The Crossroads performers are all musicians I admire and respect.” Actor-comedian Bill Murray,

who hosted the

2007 Crossroads Guitar Festival, returns to introduce the performers and supply nonmusical highlights. Other stars in the film are bluesmen Sonny Landreth, Gary Clark Jr. and Keb’ Mo’. The rock contingent includes the John Mayer Trio, Doyle Bramhall II, and the Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band. Other highlights include country star Vince Gill’s take on Clapton’s “Lay Down Sally.”

Based on the novels of Agatha Christie, three new mysteries that star David Suchet (Henry VIII, The Way We Live Now) as super sleuth Hercule Poirot begin this month. Suchet assumed the persona of Poirot in 1989 and is within six titles of completing Christie’s tales that feature the suave Belgian detective. In Three Act Tragedy (June 19) Poirot visits his friend Sir Charles Cartwright (Martin Shaw, MAsTerpieCe CLAssiC: Cranford), who hosts a cocktail party at his home where a local reverend chokes to death. Murder seems impossible, but when a second guest dies under similar circumstances, Poirot investigates further. Art Malik (MAsTerpieCe CLAssiC:

Upstairs Downstairs) and Kate Ashfield (Collision) co-star. First published in 1934, the story takes place in three different locations — a departure from Christie’s usual writing style. Next up is The Clocks (June 26), in which Poirot is asked to assist in a murder investigation to determine if a young woman is responsible for the crime. But mounting complications in the case, including multiple frozen clocks, lead the detective to suspect an international political cover-up. Published in 1963, The Clocks is notable because Poirot never visits the crime scenes. Instead, he is challenged to prove his oft-made boast that a crime can be solved by intellect alone. The series’ third episode, Hallowe’en Party, is scheduled for July 3.Sponsors: Boise Co-op, The Flicks

An encore presentation of The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers (June 7 at 9:00 p.m. MT/pT; see it in HD at 7:00/6:00 p.m. and 10:00/9:00 p.m. MT/pT) airs before the independent nonfiction film series with a “point of view” begins its 24th season later this month. The Ellsberg documentary is a comprehensive look at the release of the Pentagon Papers in 1971 and the resultant political firestorm that helped seal the fate of the Nixon administration. Kings of Pastry (June 21) is an amusing look at the competition for the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France awards, the country’s Nobel Prize for pastry. Sixteen chefs, including Jacquy Pfeiffer, co-founder of Chicago’s French Pastry School, whip up gorgeous, delectable, gravity-defying concoctions. Edge-of-your-seat drama follow the chefs as they deliver their spun-sugar desserts to the display table. The inevitable disasters and successes prove both poignant and hilarious. My Perestroika (June 28) is an intimate look at the last generation of Soviet children. Five classmates go from living sheltered childhoods to experiencing the hopes of Mikhail Gorbachev’s reforms and the confusion of the USSR’s dissolution to searching for their places in today’s Moscow. With candor and humor, the punk rocker, single mother, entrepreneur and married teachers paint a picture of the challenges, dreams and disappointments of those raised behind the Iron Curtain.

Celebrated director Peter Sellars makes his Metropolitan Opera debut with this production of what the Associated Press calls “perhaps the greatest American opera of the last quarter-century.” This adaptation of John Adams’ opus stars James Maddalena as President Richard Nixon, a role he created at the opera’s world premiere in 1987. With a libretto by American poet Alice Goodman, the opera is based on significant moments during Nixon’s visit to China in February 1972, with the key political figures as the lead characters: Nixon, first lady Pat Nixon (Janis Kelly) and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger

(Richard Paul Fink) for the Americans; Chairman Mao Tse-tung (Robert Brubaker), his wife Chiang Ch’ing (Kathleen Kim), and Premier Chou En-lai (Russell Braun) for the Chinese. Maddalena has played the lead character on many of the world’s leading stages, including the English National Opera, Netherlands Opera, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Washington Opera, and the Théâtre du Châtelet. Kelly, who also starred with Maddalena in the recent English National Opera revival of the opera, makes her Met debut. Sponsors: Bistline Family Foundation, The Flicks, Pioneer Federal Credit Union

Aurelio Zen Comes to MASTERPIECE

MYSTERY!On sunday, July 17, we debut

a new detective as part of MAsTerpieCe MysTery!

It is the suave Italian detective Aurelio Zen. Outwitting prosecutors, politicians, mobsters, and run-of-the-mill kidnappers and killers, Zen brings justice to modern-day Italy, whether the authorities want it or not. Zen features a trio of spellbinding cases based on the bestselling novels by Michael Dibdin. Called “as bracing as grappa” by USA Today and “superb at evoking…Italian turmoil and uncertainty” by The Times (London), Dibdin’s Zen thrillers are like an Italian vacation gone horribly, crazily wrong. Now they are brought to television

six specials examine Major Health issues

From international initiatives to battle preventable diseases, to women’s cardiovascular health; from dealing with the terminally ill and Alzheimer’s patients, to the scourge of skin cancer, six specials on Idaho Public Television this month examine some of the most critical medical issues facing society today. Who decides how life ends? Through the journeys of four terminally ill patients accompanied by their families, LAsT rigHTs: FACing enD-OF-LiFe CHOiCes (Tuesday, June 7, at 8:00 p.m. MT/pT) looks at some available options for the dying and the controversies they engender. This film focuses on diagnoses, progression of illnesses, and dying processes. Expert commentary looks at the pros and cons for society and the individual of hospice care, legal aid-in-dying, and suicide. The media gives the film high marks for its efforts to transcend the taboo of talking about death. “It exudes compassion, empathy and a real understanding of the issues,” says one reviewer. Good health — commonly defined as access to doctors, hospitals, insurance and medicine — only takes part of the story into account. Other factors include the neighborhoods people live in; their educational, social and economic status; and the degree of control they hold over their own lives. rOOTs OF HeALTH (Wednesday, June 8, at 9:00 p.m. MT/pT) explores the reasons why some people stay healthy or fall ill. From early childhood development in England, to microcredit opportunities and the fight for clean water in India, to environmental pollution, racism and green jobs in California, the documentary looks at the effect of social and economic policies on the health of whole populations — for better or for worse. Emmy Award-winning executive producer Helene Lerner hosts HeArTBeAT TO HeArTBeAT: WOMen AnD HeArT DiseAse (Monday, June 13, at 10:30 p.m. MT/pT), a wake-up call for women to improve their cardiovascular health. This documentary reveals useful information on risk factors, symptoms and prevention of heart disease, while exploring the emotional impact of the No. 1 killer of women in the United States. The film also addresses the need for women to ask their physicians questions and to reach out for support. Interviews include actress and heart-disease prevention advocate Lucy Lawless and Kathy Kastan, president of WomenHeart.

Narrated by Tony- and Emmy-award-winning actor Edward Herrmann, ALZHeiMer’s DiseAse: FACing THe FACTs (Wednesday, June 15, at 9:00 p.m. MT/pT) is a documentary that examines the personal and societal implications of the illness. Through profiles of families living with Alzheimer’s and interviews with doctors and investigators on the front lines, the film shows how this overlooked disease threatens to crush America’s health-care system — and spirit. Today more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s, but those numbers are about to rise dramatically. As the Baby Boom generation grows older and more individuals than ever reach the age of risk, a frightening public health crisis looms. But has anyone noticed? In comparison to cancer, heart disease and AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease greatly lags in research funding, media attention, and celebrity activism. Millions of people, mostly children, still die each year from diseases that are treatable and preventable. The vast majority of these deaths occur in the developing world. The four-part survivAL: Lives in THe BALAnCe (Mondays, June 20 and 27, at 10:00 p.m. MT/pT) provides a close look at the worldwide efforts to save lives that are unnecessarily being lost. Economic growth is lifting hundreds of millions of people out of extreme poverty and the circumstances that perpetuate disease. New vaccines are being rolled out, and there are new drugs in the pipeline for the worst killers. Access to health care is becoming a political priority across the developing world. And, most important, funding has increased. Each episode looks at a different country — the Philippines, Uganda, Niger and Bangladesh — where people still suffer from diseases and conditions the rest of the world has long since conquered. The series continues in July. Praised by members of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Cancer Society and the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, MOre THAn sKin Deep: sKin CAnCer in AMeriCA (Wednesday, June 22, at 9:00 p.m. MT/pT) examines not only the medical and scientific aspects of skin cancer, but its cultural, historical and social aspects as well. The film reveals how the tanning craze was wrongly popularized and how pioneering medical trials for melanoma may revolutionize cancer treatments.

THE LORD IS NOT ON TRIAL HERE

Airs Tuesday, June 14, at 8:00 p.m. MT/PT

This documentary tells the compelling personal story behind McCollum vs. Board of Education — one of the most important and landmark First Amendment cases in U.S. Supreme Court history. The film recounts what Vashti McCollum, a young mother of three from a small central Illinois town who in 1945 filed the historic lawsuit, would later described as “three years of headlines, headaches and hatred.” But her court case eventually led to the decision that set the foundation for the separation of church and state in public schools — a ruling that still resonates in the church-state conflicts of today. McCollum is called “that awful woman” by her neighbors and “that atheist mother” by virtually every newspaper in the country. Her friends stop returning phone calls rather than risk speaking with her. She is branded a communist, and the Illinois Legislature nearly outlaws her and her husband from ever teaching at the state university again. She receives up to 200 letters a day, some of the writers claiming they would pray for her; many wishing for much worse. All because she files a historic lawsuit that would change the relationship between religion and public schools in America.

Detectives Wes Cowan, Elyse Luray, Gwen Wright, Tukufu Zuberi and Eduardo Pagán return as the educational series begins its ninth summer season and moves from Mondays to Tuesdays. The show is devoted to exploring the complexities of historical mysteries, searching out the facts, myths and conundrums that connect local folklore, family legends and interesting objects. Traditional investigative techniques, modern technologies and plenty of legwork are the tools the show’s team of experts use to give new insights into our national history.

The hosts of the program are a high-energy group of experts in the world of historical investigations. Their expertise ranges from architecture, popular culture and sociology to archaeology, collectibles and genealogy. Parts of this season’s shows commemorate the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War and the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and America’s entry into World War II. The season opens June 21 with Pagán following mysterious airplane engine parts to a private Hawaiian island where few people have access. There, he finds a heroic story often overshadowed by the raid on Pearl Harbor. Then Luray tries to match metal shavings to the right cannon as she tries to determine what role these shavings played in the early hours of the Civil War. An early 20th century saddle puts Cowan on the trail of rodeo cowboy and Hollywood actor and stuntman Yakima Cunutt.

in productions that were shot on location around Rome, giving vivid life to the colorful settings, gorgeous women, twisted criminals and a brooding, brilliant hero. Rufus Sewell (MAsTerpieCe CLAssiC Middlemarch, “The Pillars of the Earth”) stars as Zen, a Roman police detective hailing from Venice, where his moniker is a local shortening of the name Zeno. Separated from his wife and living with his mother (Catherine Spaak), he is too frazzled by his job to think about romance. That is, until he meets Tania Moretti, his chief ’s new secretary played by Italian actress Caterina Murino (Casino Royale). Tania herself has been having spouse trouble and sees Zen as a remarkable exception to the predatory Romeos around the police station. Indeed, Zen has more than a bit of Bond about him, being both a gentleman and an exceptional lover. They are joined by an international cast including Ed Stoppard (MAsTerpieCe CLAssiC Upstairs Downstairs), Ben Miles (The Forsyte Saga), Stanley Townsend (MAsTerpieCe MysTery! The 17th annual PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest has brought out the best in hundreds of Idaho students this year. Children in kindergarten through third grade shared true stories and imagined events. They wrote of friends and fun, animals and adventures, and princesses and pets. Illustrations brought the stories to life, enhancing the words in different styles — crayons, watercolor, photos, and even a 3-D pop-up entry. Statewide, 35 talented students were recognized at regional award ceremonies in May. All winning stories — from KUID, KAID and KISU — appear on the IdahoPTV Web site (idahoptv.org/kids).

In May, all winners were honored at area ceremonies in Coeur d’Alene, Lewiston, Boise and Pocatello. Idaho Public Television would like to thank the people and supporters who make this contest possible: Garden City Library, Cotton Tree Inn (Pocatello), Kiwanis Clubs of North Idaho, and our fantastic judges: Terry Armstrong, Susan Steele, Ruthie Nellis, Cindy Barnhart and Tricia Nelson.

Idaho Winners Reveal Talent By Cindy Lunte, Grant Manager

On April 15, 116 third- to fifth-grade students gathered at the Idaho Museum of Natural History in Pocatello for Science Trek — an adventure of a lifetime. The kids did things their moms normally would not allow. They romped through the museum after closing time; snuggled up for the night next to dinosaur bones; and helped scientists do wild and astonishing experiments. Experiments involved the children in such things as: turning a balloon full of hydrogen into a ball of fire, handling three-foot-long snakes, or dressing in full protective gear to listen to the gurgling stomach and beating heart of a life-size mannequin with health issues. Each child chose a special area of interest with topics ranging from “The Amazing Atom” to “Zealous About Lasers,” and then worked side-by-side with real scientists. Through Science Trek these youngsters had the chance to experience science in a new way — up front, personal and fun! The excitement lasted into the wee hours of the night and finished off the next morning with a farewell breakfast. Idaho Public Television and the Idaho Museum of Natural History have been hosting this event for 22 years. More than 2,600 children have had the opportunity to experience this close-up exposure to science. The event is only possible with the dedication and support of a large group of volunteers — from scientists to parents, museum staff, National Guard members and area businesses. Thank you to everyone who helped this year. And a special thank-you to Laura Bingham, who did much of the event organization and scheduling when she worked for IdahoPTV, and who came back to help out even after starting a new job. Our great thanks as well to the businesses and organizations that donated funding and supplies to make this year’s event a success. They include: Idaho State University, Union Pacific Foundation, Rotary Club of Pocatello, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Sign-A-Rama, Golden Valley Natural, J.R. Simplot Company, Kiwanis Club of Pocatello, D. Peter Reedy M.D., Intermountain Gas Company and Pocatello Eye Care Optical.
