l traveled back through history to 1536,

when the first Poor Laws of England were mandated.

ln those days, the dole-or welfare, as we call it--

was funded by voluntary contributions.

But, as time passed,

the English devised the Allowance System,

the first unemployment relief,

only now it was paid with involuntary contributions,

more commonly known as taxes.

The Allowance System was a disaster.

The only real unemployment relief is to give a man a job.

But to do that, you have to give the economy life,

not tax it to death.

When capitalism was young,

the old puritanical concept of duty

was, ''He who does not work shall not eat.''

That made sense when there was more work

than men willing to do it.

But those days are gone.

Now there are millions who want to work,

but find themselves standing in breadlines.

Now, should they not eat because there are no jobs?

People, today we need a new concept of duty:

the right of the individual to demand from society

just as much as he gives to society.

We clutch at anything that even looks like a solution.

between little Wiley College from Marshall, Texas,

and the Harvard University Debate team,

the first time ever

a Negro college has faced the national champions.

Harvard's Dean of Students

is making his way to the podium now.

The crowd, as if on cue, falls silent.

[Dean] On this historic occasion,

we welcome the distinguished team from Wiley College,

our illustrious judges, you the audience,

and through the wonder of radio, the nation.

Harvard University celebrates its 300th anniversary this year,

and, in Franklin Delano Roosevelt, its fifth President of the United States.

But no university, no matter how grand or august in its history,

can afford to live in the past.

So, in the spirit of tomorrow,

l introduce to you today.:

the debaters from Wiley College:

Miss Samantha Booke,

Mr. James Farmer, Junior.

Resolved:

Civil disobedience is a moral weapon

in the fight for justice.

But how can disobedience ever be moral?

Well, l guess that depends

on one's definition of the words.

Word.

ln 1919, in lndia,

10,000 people gathered in Amritsar to protest the tyranny of British rule.

Has it started?

- Shh!

- Your brother's talking.

Just sit down.

General Reginald Dyer trapped them in a courtyard

and ordered his troops to fire into the crowd for ten minutes.

379 died--

men, women, children--

Shot down in cold blood.

Dyer said he had taught them a moral lesson.

Gandhi and his followers responded not with violence

but with an organized campaign of non-cooperation.

Government buildings were occupied.

Streets were blocked with people who refused to rise,

even when beaten by police.

Gandhi was arrested,

but the British were soon forced to release him.

He called it a moral victory.

The definition of moral:

Dyer's lesson or Gandhi's victory?

You choose.

From 191 4 to 1918,

for every single minute the world was at war,

four men laid down their lives.

Just think of it.

240 brave young men were hurled into eternity

every hour of every day, of every night,

for four long years.

Here was a slaughter

immeasurably greater than what happened at Amritsar.

Can there be anything moral about it?

Nothing...

except that it stopped Germany

from enslaving all of Europe.

Civil disobedience isn't moral because it's non-violent.

Fighting for your country with violence

can be deeply moral,

demanding the greatest sacrifice of all:

life itself.

Non-violence is the mask civil disobedience wears

to conceal its true face--

anarchy.

Gandhi believes one must always act

with love and respect for one's opponents,

even if they are Harvard debaters.

[laughter]

Gandhi also believes that lawbreakers must accept

the legal consequences for their actions.

Does that sound like anarchy?

Civil disobedience is not something for us to fear.

lt is, after all, an American concept.

You see, Gandhi draws his inspiration

not from a Hindu scripture,

but from Henry David Thoreau,

who l believe graduated from Harvard

and lived by a pond not too far from here.

My opponent is right about one thing.

Thoreau was a Harvard grad,

and, like many of us, a bit self-righteous.

[laughter]

He once said, ''Any man more right than his neighbors

constitutes a majority of one.''

Thoreau the idealist could never know

that Adolf Hitler would agree with his words.

The beauty and the burden of democracy is this:

no idea prevails without the support of the majority.

The people decide the moral issues of the day,

not a majority of one.

Majorities do not decide what is right or wrong.

Your conscience does.

So why should a citizen

surrender his or her conscience

to a legislator?

No, we must never, ever kneel down

before the tyranny of a majority.

We can't decide which laws to obey and which to ignore.

My father is one of those men

that stands between us and chaos:

a police officer.

l remember the day his partner, his best friend,

was gunned down in the line of duty.

Most vividly of all,

l remember the expression on my dad's face.

Nothing that erodes the rule of law can be moral,

no matter what name we give it.

in a dark forest filled with fog?

Was he a thief?

Or just a Negro?

Was he a sharecropper?

A preacher?

Were his children waiting up for him?

And who are we to just lie there and do nothing?

No matter what he did, the mob was the criminal.

But the law did nothing,

just left us wondering why.

My opponent says

nothing that erodes the rule of law can be moral.

But there is no rule of law in the Jim Crow South,

not when Negroes are denied housing,

turned away from schools, hospitals,

and not when we are lynched.

St. Augustine said,

''An unjust law is no law at all, ''

which means l have a right,

even a duty, to resist...

with violence or civil disobedience.

You should pray l choose the latter.

Although "The Great Debaters" does not open until Christmas, I had the good fortune of seeing it at a preview -- and I can recommend it without reservation. It is a great story, based on real events that most of us never heard of, about a debating team from Wiley College, a small black institution in rural Texas, that performs extraordinary feats because the kids are good and the team is taught by Mel Tolson,

a real person, acted by Denzel Washington, who also directs. Forest Whitaker, like Washington an academy award winner, plays James Farmer Sr., the school president and the father of one of the debaters, James Farmer Jr. (yes, that James Farmer Jr.). The participation in this enterprise of Washington, Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey and the Weinstein brothers should draw crowds (provided the film isn't cursed by being described as "uplifting," though it is). The revelation in this film are the performances of the three principal debaters: Jurnee Smollett as Samatha Booke (with an "e", as she proclaims when she tries out for the debate team), Nate Parker as Henry Lowe (also with an "e" as he announces in response to Samantha's declaration) and Denzel Whitaker as James Farmer Jr. (It's an amusing coincidence, but he is unrelated either to Denzel Washington or to Forrest Whitaker.) You may have seen Jurnee Smollett earlier in her career when she was a "cute kid" and a promising actress. This film could be her portal to stardom. In addition to being a gorgeous young woman, she's also an accomplished actress, ready for bigger parts in the future. You'll also be impressed with her colleagues, people whose names you may never have heard. You don't have to be black to find this film engrossing; I'm not. All you need to be is (a) a human being and (b) someone who appreciates a good movie. I hope it makes a ton of money at the box office but it is, above all, a quality film. It just happens to be about a difficult period in American history, the rural South in the 1930's. It just happens to be inspirational and uplifting and all that good, boring stuff that cause your eyes to roll when that's how the critics describe it. But it's better than uplifting. It's GOOD and it's REAL.

The Great Debaters: An enlightened struggle against racial oppression during the Depression By Helen Halyard 13 February 2008 Directed by Denzel Washington, written by Robert Eisele, produced by Oprah Winfreys Harpo Productions The Great Debaters offers a fictionalized and limited account of the exploits of the award-winning Wiley College debate team headed by Melvin B. Tolson, an AfricanAmerican English professor, during the Depression years. Beyond his academic duties, Tolson was an accomplished poet, journalist and social activist. Before this film was produced, very little was generally known about Wiley, a small college with only 400 students, or its debating team. The team had a remarkable record, going 10 straight years without a loss from 1929 to 1939. Whats more, the teams opponents included much larger black universities, including Fisk, Morehouse, Virginia Union, Lincoln, Wilberforce and Howard.

Tolsons debaters became so well known that they were invited to participate in the first interracial debate ever permitted. The contest, which took place in Oklahoma City in 1930, pitted Wiley College against the University of Oklahoma. Five years later, before an audience of 1,100, Tolsons team won the national championship in a debate with the reigning champions from the University of Southern California. (In a seemingly unnecessary substitution, the film has a group from Harvard University as the opposing team for this historic event.)

Founded in 1873, Wiley College is one of the oldest black colleges west of the Mississippi River. It was established by the Freedmans Bureau in the period called Reconstruction during the immediate aftermath of the American Civil War, a time filled with hope among former slaves who yearned for equality, education and justice. This is the second film directed by Denzel Washington, following Antwone Fisher in 2003, a story about a youth embittered by traumas inflicted by the foster care system. While the subject matter of the current film raises important historical questions, its treatment tends to be predictable and clichd. Washington does an admirable job portraying Professor Tolson. The winner of three Oscars, including one for best supporting actor, playing a runaway slave in the 1989 film Glory, he brings out the best in the younger members of the cast as well. In The Great Debaters, Denzel Whitaker (no relation to Forest Whitaker) plays James Farmer, an early leader in the civil rights movement, whose conservative trajectory later found him joining the Republication administration of Richard Nixon as assistant secretary of health, education and welfare. Jurnee Smollett plays the role of Samantha Brooke, the only woman on the debate team. Brookes character is loosely based on that of Henrietta Bell. Still alive in Houston, Texas, Bell gave a number of interviews following the films release. She recalled in particular the power of Tolsons intellect and the struggle he conducted with students to read widely on questions of economics, history, philosophy and science. Some of the most powerful scenes in the film deal with the oppressive conditions of racism and the sheer terror of the Jim Crow system that dominated the South well into the twentieth century. The film opens with Professor James Farmer, Sr. (Forest Whitaker), one of the first African Americans to receive a Ph.D. from Boston University, being terribly humiliated in front of his family by two white farmers after he mistakenly hit a hog that ran in front of his car. Unable to defy the farmers, he never looks them in the eye and agrees to hand over his monthly pay of $25, which represents far more than the hog is worth.

In another scene, as the team is driving to participate in a debate, they encounter a black man hanging lifeless from a tree. The totally disfigured and barely human body is surrounded by whites who seem to take pleasure in what they have done. Lynching, organized as a community event, was commonplace as a means of terrorizing blacks and diverting and suppressing the anger of very oppressed sections of white workers. Texas was third among states, after Mississippi and Georgia, in the total number of recorded lynchings. Between 1885 and 1942, records indicate that 468 mostly black men were lynched in Texas. Another interesting episode, barely mentioned in reviews of the film, is Tolsons effort to organize the Southern Tenant Farmers Union (STFU), a broad-based protest movement made up of black and white sharecroppers who had been driven off their land and forced into day labor. As the farmers convene a meeting to discuss their strength in unity, they come under attack from a vigilante mob. It is revealed later in the film that the local sheriff participated in the raid, along with racist organizations like the Ku Klux Klan. While The Great Debaters touches on important historical issues, very little is explained in the film about what was a tumultuous period of American history. Unless one has former knowledge of the year 1935the height of the Great Depression in the US, a period dominated by mass unemployment, homelessness and hungerit is not brought across in the film that it was within this context that figures like Melvin Tolson emerged. The film implies that Tolson was involved with the Communist Party. While this author could find nothing written to indicate this was the case, both the CP and Socialist Party were involved at the time in efforts to organize the STFU, and Tolson certainly would have been familiar with the perspective and political arguments advanced in their publications. One of the films major weaknesses is that Wileys debate teams always argues for what could be called the correct, or progressive, side of the issue in dispute: integration of the school system, the right of poor people to social reform, the right of masses to conduct civil disobedience against racial injustice. While debates during the 1930s were organized differently from the way they are todaywhere coaches agree in advance to a particular subject, and then flip a coin to see which team begins with the affirmative sidein real life, the Wiley team did not always argue for progressive positions. The film would have been strengthened and its dramatic tension increased had the team been portrayed, even once, in defense of a reactionary position. It was Tolsons belief that the conditions of racism and inequality would be overcome through education, the power of ideas and social organization. The same convictions that drove his work with the Forensic Society of Wiley College were behind his efforts to unite black and white tenant farmers.

Unfortunately, this side of the story is presented in a rather one-sided way in the film. The more prominent white actors are cast in the roles of the racist farmers, a reactionary sheriff and arrogant white student debaters. There was certainly no shortage of such reactionary layers in the Deep South during this period. And while it is true the film script had to summarize events stretching over a long period of time, the way these characters are cast is to the detriment of both historical accuracy and dramatic depth. As an example, the film portrays the audience attending the 1930 debate at the University of Oklahoma as racially polarized: the black audience applauds the Wiley debaters and the white audience applauds their home team. Contemporaneous newspaper reports, however, give a far different account. At the actual event, the audience was caught up in the strength of arguments and intellectual integrity of the participants on both sides, regardless of racial characteristics and collegiate affiliation. Tolsons comments about the event, recorded in an article published immediately afterwards, specifically memorialize this astonishing social reality. When the finest intellects of black youth and white youth meet, he said, the thinking person gets the thrill of seeing beyond the racial phenomena the identity of worthy qualities. He went on to elaborate his vision of a moment in the future when the most eloquent and intelligent representatives of both races join forces in a united struggle against racial oppression. For that all-too-brief hour, he declared, the mixed audience seemed to forget their difference, applauding one team as readily as it applauded another. In the South, I have seen the children of ex-slaves shaking hands with the grandsons of the masters after the debate. The film would have been far more interesting had more of an effort been made by Denzel Washington and producer Oprah Winfrey to find a way to present the contradictory nature of relations.
