How to RegisterPre-registration is required for all classes and programs except where noted. Most workshops have registration deadlines; please check the Calendar of Events at dmbotanicalgarden.com for deadline dates. We encourage you to register early, as class sizes are limited. Please note, only named individuals on the Botanical Garden membership are eligible for the member rates. For questions, please call the education department at 515.323.6290 ext. 6.

HortEcology™ HortEcology™ is the Botanical Garden’s signature curriculum series that helps gardeners make beautiful, ecologically functional plantings utilizing methods developed and applied at the Garden.

• HortEcology™ Planting and Gardening with Kelly Norris, Botanical GardenWednesdays, April 15 and 22, 6-8 p.m.

This course is a follow-up to the HortEcology™ Design Workshop but can be taken by anyone. Participants will learn to implement naturalistic planting designs and ecologically manage these spaces for beauty and interest. Using examples from the Botanical Garden, you’ll observe practices at work, partake in demonstrations and receive a course pack compiled from expert sources. Registrants will receive a voucher for 15% off a purchase at the Spring Garden Festival. Registration includes both sessions.

• HortEcology™ Plants and Pollinators with Kelly Norris and Ryan Drake, Botanical GardenTuesday, June 9, 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Learn about the ecologies of pollinators, how to garden to support them, and receive a 16-plant pollinator kit. Participants will learn about garden design and plant selections before heading outdoors to identify and survey bees.

Summer CampYouth explore the world of plants and nature through the lens of their favorite activities. Using the Garden as a classroom, youth are inspired to create and explore

HikesSpring Wildflower Hike with Sydney Algreen-Hunter, Botanical Garden Saturday, May 2, 10-11:30 a.m.

Take a guided stroll through Brown’s Woods Forest Preserve, located near Valley Junction. Participants of all ages will enjoy combing some of its 500 acres of forest in search of native spring flowers, mushrooms and more.

Saturday Pop-up Programming Join us each Saturday for hands-on activities and informational displays. Pop-up programs are the perfect opportunity for guests of all ages to explore the world of plants. All programs are held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in our Kemin Plant Sciences Lab or conservatory.

Free with regular admission; registration is not required.

Private Group ClassesLooking for a fun activity for a birthday party, bachelorette party, or other gathering? Potting Bench classes are fun outings for groups of all ages and are tailored to fit the needs and interests of your group. Choose from a selection of hands-on workshops such as air plant sculptures or fairy gardens.

Spring Garden Festival Thursday-Sunday, May 7-10

The Spring Garden Festival is the Botanical Garden’s signature opportunity to celebrate gardening in Iowa. This four-day retail festival includes more than 500 limited-edition varieties of plants, garden art, and merchandise, plus educational sessions, workshops, and family-friendly garden activities. Abra Lee is a public horticulture leader, working within the green industry for 18 years. With rural roots in Georgia and a passion for pop culture, garden history, and style, she sees the interweaving of horticulture and our everyday lives as the path to increasing horticulture’s relevance and importance for a more inclusive, diverse audience. Lee is currently a fellow at Longwood Gardens and owner of Conquer the Soil, her online platform that celebrates the intersection of plants and pop culture. Her experience includes serving as the landscape manager for George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

where she received the Urban Ag Council’s Grand Award. As the Botanical Garden focuses on serving a growing community and inspiring horticulture curiosity for a diverse population, Abra will help kick off the announcement of our newest effort to make plant education and exploration more accessible. Celebrate the eighth annual Downtown Earth Day Tour with a visit to the Botanical Garden and the Science Center of Iowa. Learn more about the environment and a host of community organizations that use sustainable practices. This event is free to the public at the Botanical Garden thanks to the generosity of the Principal Foundation. The Science Center will offer $5 admission.
