The gunfight took place in Nowhatta area, adjacent to historic Jamia Masjid. The encounter started Monday morning as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was delivering his speech in connection with Independence Day. The identity of the slain militants is being ascertained, police said. Police identified the slain officiating Comman- dant as Pramod Kumar of 49 Battalion. Besides officiating Commandant, Kumar was staff officer to Deputy Inspector Gen- eral of CRPF, North Srinagar. A senior police officer who was monitoring the operation told Greater Kashmir that mili- tants had taken shelter in an abandoned building during the night. MUDDASIR ALI Srinagar, Aug 15: Asking New Delhi to start dialogue with all stakeholders for resolving political issue of Kashmir, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti Monday said the “mistakes” committed by suc- cessive Governments in New Delhi were responsible for the State’s problems even as she asserted that the gun won’t solve the K-Issue. In her maiden I-Day speech as Chief Minister at Bakshi Stadium here, Meh- booba made an emotional appeal to youth to help her Government to “restore peace and save lives” in Kashmir where 60 civilians have got killed and over 6000 injured in action by forces during the past 38 days of unrest, post Burhan encounter on July 8. “People of J&K aren’t bad, neither are people of our country. Somewhere the mistakes were committed by our leader- ship and the leadership of the country from Jawaharlal Nehru till date and all political parties. It is their mistake,” said Mehbooba in her 53-minute speech at the stadium. The Chief Minister said she too has grievances at the way the Kashmir issue has been handled. “People in J&K chose democracy, not considering the religion. He said the party had submied a memorandum to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh during his visit to the valley but nothing has come out aſter the assurances he gave to the National Confer- ence delegation. “We had asked for stop- ping the use of pellet guns and other steps to be taken for improving the situation. The Home Minister had given assurances but nothing has happened,” Sagar said. A Congress spokesman said none of the party leaders could make it to the Bakshi Stadium due to strict curfew imposed in the city. On the 38th consecutive day Kashmir contin- ued to reel under strict curfew and over 80 persons were injured, some with pellets, in forces’ action on pro-freedom protesters. Muhammad Yasir Sheikh (16) son of Abdul Salam Sheikh of SD Colony Batamaloo was killed when police opened fire on him near Bus Stand Batamaloo. Residents and family said that Yasir was killed in target fire by police as there was no protest in the area. They said that Yasir died on the spot. Two other youth sus- tained injuries in police firing. 2 more boys killed, aged 16, 18 ZEHRU NISSA Srinagar, Aug 15: As the use of pellet guns by personnel of Jammu and Kashmir Police and para-military CRPF continue in Kashmir, the number of persons with injured eyes due to these pellets has touched 500 with doctors fearing that a huge majority of these will have to live with lifelong visual impairment. MUDASIR YAQOOB Srinagar, Aug 15: Muham- mad Yasir Sheikh, class 10 student from Batmaloo here was killed in “target firing” by police Monday evening, eyewitnesses told Greater Kashmir. Son of carpenter Abdul Salam Sheikh of SD Colony Batmaloo, 16-year old Yasir had gone out on a walk when he, according to the eyewitnesses, was confronted by a group of policemen deployed near Batmaloo bus stand. “There were no protests or stone pelting going in the area. He (Yasir) had just gone out when the police party deployed near Batamaloo yard made him target of their bullets near Baqa mosque,” said a local, Shabir Ahmad. He said Yasir was hit with bullets in his chest, resulting in his on spot death at around 6 PM. Soon after the news about the incident spread, scores of youth rushed to the spot and rushed the teenager to SMHS hos- pital. But the doctors at the hospital declared him ‘brought dead.’ As the news about his killing spread, announce- ments were made on loud- speakers, asking people to come out. Hundreds of people assembled at SD Colony and raised pro- freedom and anti-police slogans as massive pro- freedom protests erupted across the area. Local youth took the body of Yasir on shoul- ders and marched through interior streets as people waited for last glimpse of the student. Women were wailing and raised slogans “Sha- heed Ki Jo Mout Hai Woh Koum Ki Hayaat Hai. (Mar- tyrs’ death is nation’s life).” Several friends of Yasir, with tearful eyes, were repeatedly shout- ing that Yasir was “killed by police. Srinagar, Aug 15: Two mili-tants and a Commandant of Central Reserve Police Force were killed and nine security personnel injured in a gunfight in old Srinagar on Monday.

The gunfight took place in Nowhatta area, adjacent to historic Jamia Masjid. The encounter started Monday morning as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was delivering his speech in connection with Independence Day.

The identity of the slain

militants is being ascertained, police said. Police identified the slain officiating Comman-dant as Pramod Kumar of 49 Battalion. Besides officiating Commandant, Kumar was staff officer to Deputy Inspector Gen-eral of CRPF, North Srinagar.

Srinagar, Aug 15: As the use of pellet guns by personnel of Jammu and Kashmir Police and para-military CRPF continue in Kashmir, the number of persons with injured eyes due to these pellets has touched 500 with doctors fearing that a huge majority of these will have to live with lifelong visual impairment.

Srinagar, Aug 15: Muham-mad Yasir Sheikh, class 10 student from Batmaloo here was killed in “target firing” by police Monday evening, eyewitnesses told Greater Kashmir.

Son of carpenter Abdul Salam Sheikh of SD Colony Batmaloo, 16-year old Yasir had gone out on a walk when he, according to the eyewitnesses, was confronted by a group of policemen deployed near Batmaloo bus stand.

“There were no protests or stone pelting going in the area. He (Yasir) had just gone out when the police party deployed near Batamaloo yard made him target of their bullets near Baqa mosque,” said a local, Shabir Ahmad.

He said Yasir was hit with bullets in his chest, resulting in his on spot death at around 6 PM.

Soon after the news about the incident spread, scores of youth rushed

to the spot and rushed the teenager to SMHS hos-pital. But the doctors at the hospital declared him ‘brought dead.’

As the news about his killing spread, announce-ments were made on loud-speakers, asking people to come out. Hundreds of people assembled at SD Colony and raised pro-freedom and anti-police slogans as massive pro-freedom protests erupted across the area.

Local youth took the body of Yasir on shoul-ders and marched through interior streets as people waited for last glimpse of the student.

Women were wailing and raised slogans “Sha-heed Ki Jo Mout Hai Woh Koum Ki Hayaat Hai. (Mar-tyrs’ death is nation’s life).”

Several friends of Yasir, with tearful eyes, were repeatedly shout-ing that Yasir was “killed by police. He was hit by a target fire.”
