Matric Results: 22 Govt schools score 0SYED RIZWAN GEELANI
Srinagar, Jan 15: There is not much for the government schools to be happy about the recently announced results of class 10th as the institutions that registered good pass percentage last year have witnessed nearly zero per-centage results this year. Twenty two government schools have zero pass percentage this year.
Government Boys High School Harwan is a case in point. In 2014, there were three students in class 10 and all of them secured good marks. In the same institution, in the ses-sion 2015, there were two students, and both of them failed in the exams.
Similarly, there are other such schools which have shown a down ward trend in the results with the pass percentage gone down to zero percent.
In another institution- Govern-ment Girls High School Pandrethan,
the results have gone down from 33 percent to zero percent this year.
Last year three students appeared in the class 10 exams from this school and the pass per-centage was 33 percent while as two students appeared this year from the institution who failed to qualify the exams.
The number of government schools with zero percent perfor-mance in the class 10 examination in 2014 was 27 while as in 2013 the number was 37 and in 2012 it was only 12. This year the number of such schools is 22.
Even if the schools, which gave zero percent results last year per-formed better this year but there are other institutions which need specific intervention from the department.
Two government run institu-tions in central Kashmir’s Gander-bal district have performed zero
this year, Government Boys High school Anderwan and GHS Tulmul-la have given zero percent results while as the result in these insti-tutions was seven and 50 percent last year. Last year eight students appeared in the exams from GHS Tulmulla and one student this year.
Some government schools con-tinue to be a cause of concern for the state as they have failed to improve the results this year also.
GHS Boys Dandmoha Uri and GHS Gohlta have given consecu-tive ducks from past year. Last year 12 students from GHS Dand-moha appeared in class 10 exams while the number was five this year. Likewise, two students from GHS Gohlta appeared in class 10 exams last year and three students in annual 2015 class 10 exams.
Also, GHS Zamboor Uri has shown no improvement this year in the results as none of the students
have qualified the class 10 exams like past year. Fourteen students appeared in exams from the schools last year while as 15 students appeared this year in class 10 exams.
Two other schools- GHS Boys Hamam and Dandmoha in Baram-ulla have also failed to improve the results in class 10 exams. Both the schools performed zero from past many years. Four students appeared in exams from GHS Hamam and three students in 2015. While as 12 students from Dand-moha appeared in 10th exams last year and five students this year.
Meanwhile, officials in the department claim that the poor performance of the schools was due to the adoption of ‘no deten-tion policy’ in 2015 annual exams. “This year the percentage of some schools was poor as we didn’t allow them to detain any student on basis of his poor performance in
golden test conducted by schools,” Director School Education Kash-mir (DSEK) Dr. Shah Faesal told Greater Kashmir.
He said the number of students who appeared in 2015 annual class 10 exams was higher than that of previous exams. “The number of students was increased by more than 10000,” he said.
The pass percentage of GHS Yemberzalwari Sopore has decreased from 25 percent to zero percent this year while as the per-centage of GHS Chowgam in Shan-gus has decreased from 50 percent to zero as well.
The number of students who appeared in class t10 exams from GHS Yemberzalwari was four in 2014 and seven in 2015. While as the number of students from GHS Chow-gam was four in both the years.
The class 10 result of Govern-ment Higher Secondary School
(GHSS) Hakura in Kokernag has decreased from 62 percent to zero percent this year. Eight students appeared in exams in 2014 while as five in 2015.
GHS Vailoo has continued to produce duck this year as well. Three students appeared in annual 2014 exams while as five in 2015.
GHS Chachimarg in Shopian has also given zero percent results from past two years. The pass percentage of GHS Gojithaji in Budgam has also gone down from 50 percent to zero percent this year.
GHS Boninar and Kudara in Bandipora have given zero per-cent results this year. The number of students who appeared in 2015 class 10 exams was two and five while as in 2014 annual exams it was three and four.
GHS Kachwan and Pooru kalnag have also witnessed zero percent results this year.

Mercury dips, Srinagar freezes at minus 3.1Srinagar, Jan 15: Mercury dipped in most parts of Kashmir while the minimum temperature rose by six degrees in Leh town in the frontier Ladakh region to settle at minus 7.4 degrees Celsius.
Kargil was the coldest place in Jammu and Kashmir though night temperature also rose there slightly to minus 12.0 degrees Celsius com-pared to the previous night's minus 12.4 degrees Celsius, an official of the Meteorological Depart-ment here said.
The official said in the Valley, the minimum temperature increased in Pahalgam and Qazi-gund, while other places experienced a drop in the mercury.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.1 degrees Celsius against minus 2.9 degrees Celsius the previous night, the official said.
The famous tourist resort of Pahalgam regis-tered a low of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius, rising a notch from the previous night.
The official said that mercury in Qazigund, the gateway town to the Valley, registered a low of minus 2.2 degrees Celsius.
The minimum temperature in Gulmarg and Kokernag town in south Kashmir went down by around a degree to settle at a low of minus 5.6
degrees Celsius and minus 1.3 degrees Celsius respectively.
There was a slight drop in mercury in Kupwara town of north Kashmir as it registered a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, the official said.
The Meteorological Department has predict-ed mainly dry weather for most part of Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period ending January 31.
It said Kashmir may witness a dry January like the last year with less chances of snowfall during the remaining days of the month.
Chillai-Kalan, which began with winter sol-stice on December 21 and ends January 31, is the harshest period of winter in Kashmir when chanc-es of snowfall are most frequent and maximum.
However, it has far remained largely dry except for brief spells of light snow in plains on two occasions and moderate snowfall in the higher reaches on a few occasions.
Owing to the dry weather, the minimum tem-perature in the Valley has mostly hovered below the freezing point and resulted in increase in common ailments. The 40-day period is followed by a 20-day long 'Chillai-Khurd' (small cold) and a 10-day long 'Chillai Bachha' (baby cold). PTI
