Dear Allen Associates,

As I mentioned in the April Forums, we want to create an environment at Allen that will help you Love What You Do.

We want you to tell us if Allen is a great place to work or if we need to work harder to make it great. I am asking you to take the Great Place to Work survey. Tell us what we are doing well, and tell us what we need to change so we can create an environment that keeps you loving your job. I want you to be completely candid in your responses. The survey is designed in such a way that individuals cannot be identified. The information is held by Great Place to Work Institute for their safekeeping.

On Monday, you received an email from [email protected]. In the message is your unique password (this is what ensures COMPLETE CONFIDENTIALITY). The survey will be active until 8 a.m. on June 3.

Remember: PLEASE TAKE THE GREAT PLACE TO WORK SURVEY. We need your input. If you have any questions, please talk to Steve Sesterhenn or Marty Colwell in HR. Thank you for your help. I am looking forward to your feedback.

Our Gem, AnnaBellHospital volunteers in Puerto Rico inspired Annabell Richardson to start a volunteer career at Allen Hospital. After boarding a cruise ship with her husband, he suffered a heart attack on their first night. The ship docked in Puerto Rico where the pair disem-barked for medical care. “The volunteers there were so kind and helpful to me. It was then I said that someday I would be a volun-teer in a hospital,” Annabell said.

Prior to Allen, she worked 26 years in food service for Union Community Schools. The majority of her time was spent baking anything from bread and buns to pizza and desserts. She remem-bers making 1,000 buns in one batch. Now, instead of serving

children’s lunches, you can find her serving our associates and guests in the Allen Auxiliary Gift Shop, always with a welcoming smile and cheery, ‘Good morning!’

Annabell served over 10 years on the Allen Auxiliary Board, two years as president. Outside of Allen, she also volunteers for her church. Married to her late husband for 48 years, she raised two daughters and a stepson. She counts herself blessed to have 6 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren (how great is that?!).

When asked about a unique fact about her, Annabell replied, “I played on a six-girl basketball team in high school in Conroy, IA.” And a life lesson she would like to pass along to Allen associates? “Whatever comes along in life – God will see you though.” You are a real gem, Annabell and we are so glad to know you.

Have you thanked a Volunteer today?

News From Allen Women’s HealthImagine a World without Any Unintended PregnanciesLast week, Allen Women’s Health encouraged readers to imagine a world with zero teen pregnancies. This week, Allen Women’s Health would like readers to imagine a world with zero unintended pregnancies—whether teen or adult. According to the Brookings Institute, taxpayers spend about $12 billion annually on publicly financed medical care for women who experience unintended pregnancies and on infants who were conceived unintentionally.(CCF Brief #45, July 2011). Fortunately, Iowa’s unintended pregnancy rates have declined by 14% since 2006 and Iowa’s abortion rate has decreased 21% since 2006. While many factors are contributing to this decrease, most experts agree that the increased use of Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARCs) by women are at the forefront of this decline. LARCS include the Mirena IUD, Paragard IUD, and the Nexplanon contraceptive implant. All of these safe, effective methods are available through Allen Women’s Health. For women concerned about cost, Allen Women’s Health can work with patients to make these methods affordable—sometimes at no cost. To learn more about LARCS, contact Allen Women’s Health at 235-5090 or go to www.allenwomenshealth.org.

What Is the True Meaning of Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday which occurs every year on the final Monday of May.

Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service.

It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.

Thank you to our active military and our veterans.

More than 1,000 walkers turned out for the American Heart Association Heart Walk at Prairie Lakes Park in Cedar Falls on Saturday, May 18. The UnityPoint Health – Waterloo team has raised $30,000 to date, and we’re still getting pledge money coming in. We appreciate the enthusiastic support for this event, and we want to share just a few of the pictures with you here. Thanks for helping us make the event such a success. We will present Go Red for Women again this November.

Driven by it’s goal, to save lives from the country’s number 1 and 3 killers - heart disease and stroke - the Heart Walk also promotes physical activity and heart-healthy living. This year’s event nationally had more than one million walkers and hosted 350 events. (Source: www.startwalkingnow.org.start_heart_walk.jsp)
