The women of Kappa Kappa Gamma are having a phenomenal spring semester! We had a very successful spring recruitment and welcomed 6 lovely new members who we are really excited to initiate in just a few short weeks!

Kappa has been extremely active. We had a fitness social with the women of Alpha Gamma Delta, where two of our very own Kappas lead a Zumba class and

an abdominal workout! Kappa also participated in the Up ‘Til Dawn event that benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Some of our sisters also had a fiesta at the Polar Bear Jump and went swimming with their Sombreros and mustaches!

Our sisterhood has gotten even stronger this semester through our sisterhoods and programs. Many ladies took a trip down to see headquarters in Columbus during our day off. was recognized at the Greek Leadership Awards and received the 2011 Greek Leadership Most Spirited Award. Our spirit goes beyond ourselves, and we wish to share it with EVERYONE on The University of Akron campus. We would also like to congratulate all other Greek chapters who were also recognized for their accomplishments. Upsilon Epsilon also hosted a successful week of educational events between February 29, 2012 and March 3, 2012, in which our chapter assisted The Haven of Rest, Planned Parenthood, and The March of Dimes Foundation in their philanthropy efforts. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. looks forward to future programming towards the end of the semester calendar!

Tau Kappa Epsilon is making our grades our first priority; we are making great strides to make our grades better. We are putting a major influence on our grades this semester. Our chapter’s grades are already improving with our fall new members receiving a cumulative 3.0 grade point average. We currently have five new members, all of who are excited to contribute to the Greek community. We always strive to be one of the best fraternities in community service. And even though we are one of the best in the community in service hours, we are always looking for more. The biggest event that we do is Walk a Mile in Her Shoes for the Rape Crisis Center of Summit and Stark County. We walk a mile in high heels to raise money to fight against rape. We are currently trying to get other fraternities involved in Walk a Mile as well as selling wrist bands like we did last year.

The Eta chapter of Delta Gamma has been having a wonderful spring semester. We have welcomed six amazing new members and hope every other chapter’s recruitment events went well. Our annual Spaghetti Dinner was a huge success raising over $900 for Service for Sight and Aid to the Visually Impaired. We welcomed family, friends, other Greeks and even some of our sisters from Kent to dine with us that evening.

The Dorothy Garrett Martin Lectureship in Values and Ethics welcomed Geena Davis in January to E.J Thomas Hall to speak. Ms. Davis was very inspiring and empowering in the way she spoke, she also gave us many smiles and a few laughs. She spoke of female representation in the media and society. She opened

our eyes to the gender inequalities that surround us and encouraged us to help make a difference. Ms. Davis spoke of her inspiring life and showed to be an

excellent role model because of her independence and perseverance.

We would like to highlight The Great Fight for Sight sponsored by TOMS eyewear and Delta Gamma. Delta Gammas across the country are fighting for sight by hosting trunk shows and selling TOMS eyewear. One pair of TOMS glasses bought equals sight for one person through prescription glasses, sight-saving surgery or medical treatment. Eta Chapter plans on having a trunk show in the near future, but until then please help us by purchasing

online and entering our chapter’s promo code: DGUniversityofAkron. Join us in the Great Fight for Sight.

So far, this semester, our chapter has completed a total of 26 community service hours between three different locations. All three of the community service events involved mentoring children, education, and teaching the importance of staying in school. We recently held a fundraiser with the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. to raise money for both of our chapters. Moving forward we plan on continuing our community service efforts throughout the rest of this semester. Lastly, we look forward to Alpha Week coming up at the end of March.

The Sigma Nu Fraternity has kept a very busy schedule this semester, to say the least. The Chapter recently came off of Alumni Receivership this semester and are now operating on their own. This was such an astounding accomplishment that brought out the true character of the Chapter and showed that hard work does pay off. The brothers participated in Up Til Dawn this past year, with the first part coming in the

fall semester and the finale earlier this February. All together, the Sigma Nu Fraternity fielded 4 teams and raised $1,310.00 for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, which was the Up Til Dawn philanthropy organization.

There are currently 5 candidates going through the Sigma Nu LEAD process, which will take 8 weeks to complete before they can become Knights of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. The Chapter was also recognized at the Men’s basketball game on February 22nd for winning the Greek Night at the JAR the previous year. The $200 check that was presented to the chapter went to Sigma Nu’s Philanthropy organization, Habitat for Humanity. The men will be participating in Relay for Life and the MS Walk on campus later this semester and are looking to bring the bond of brotherhood in the chapter even closer. GO SIGMA NU!!

The women of Alpha Phi recruited wonderful new women, who they would like to welcome to the Eta Gamma chapter. The executive board recently attended a regional conference in Dearborn, Michigan and learned great ideas and advice on ways to better the chapter. They will also be hosting their 7th Annual Red Dress Gala Philanthropy event on March 24th in support of women’s heart health. Keep an eye out for their next Philanthropy event “Eat Your Heart Out PHI-esta” with the gentlemen of Phi Delta Theta.

The ladies of The Delta Pi Chapter are continuing to work hard. We rank #1 in academic standards for all Greek Letter Organizations with a 3.55 GPA. We had three young ladies carry a 4.0 GPA: India Kaczmarek, Erin Robinson and Natalie McGhee. Delta

Pi celebrated the achievements of two members Natalie McGhee and Erin Robinson as they graduated with degrees in Early Childhood Education during the 2011 Fall Semester. We celebrated at Crave in Akron, Ohio with gifts of love and happiness as they begin their new careers.

Leadership Fellows is a program within Alpha Kappa Alpha that occurs twice a year during the summer and winter session. This program develops responsible young women who are not only endowed with

leadership skills and a willingness to do community service. It is considered an honor to be selected. Melonie Wright from The Delta Pi Chapter attended in Orlando, Florida. When asked how she felt about this experience she stated “I cherished the opportunity to sharpen my skills as a leader. I came back refreshed and ready to impact the Greater Akron community”.

Recently we visited Lighthouse Academy with the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Alpha Tau Chapter to give the students schools supplies and to speak to them about continuing their education. We also raised $250 for our “Pink Goes Red” mission to fight Heart Disease. Delta Pi will be participating in Women History Month this March.

The men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon are excited for this spring semester and what it might hold. We wish all of Greek life the best in the recruitment process. The brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon have extended bids to eight potential new members, who we believe show the characteristics of a True Gentleman. We wish these potential new members, as well as any other Greek life potential new member, the best of luck. Recently

some of our brothers, including two of our esteemed Alumni, made the plunge into the icy cold waters of Portage Lakes to help raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. We enjoyed seeing many other Greek organizations there and look forward to next year’s jump. As intramurals get into full swing we look forward to the friendly competition and wish everyone good luck. Paddy Murphy Week is set for the end of April again, and we are really looking forward to a couple of changes this year compared to the past. Our philanthropy, Children’s Miracle Network, will benefit from the donations that we have collected throughout the week. Lastly, The men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon would like to wish all of Greek life a prosperous semester and a safe Spring Break.

The Men of the Alpha Phi chapter of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity would like to start off by saying congratulations to all of Greek life and we hope for success in all of their philanthropy programs. We also would like to announce that we have four new members with us this semester and we hope for their success. We look forward to the rest of this semester! We are excited for Relay for Life, Songfest, and our volleyball tournament as well as the Bowl-a-Thon. All money raised will be given to the children of The Hole in the Wall Camp. We are also looking forward to our founder’s day, a day that we can just sit back with our alumni and hear their stories and learn more about the men of Phi Kappa Tau. We hope for the best in all of Greek life for the rest of the semester!

The sisters of Alpha Gamma Delta started the semester strong by welcoming four new members into our chapter, putting us at house total. We jumped into the semester by sharing memories with some of the other Greek chapters at social events; the sisters enjoyed events with Kappa Kappa Gamma, Theta Chi, Phi Kappa Tau, Alpha Sigma Phi and Phi Delta Theta. The women also hosted the first Panhellenic sisterhood of the semester at our chapter house. Alpha Gamma

Delta was thrilled to be ranked third scholastically among the men and women Greek groups. The sisters are putting intense emphasis on academics this

semester as well. The sisters had an outstanding turnout at the 9th annual Polar Bear Plunge. Alpha Gamma Delta had 10 jumpers, and 29 volunteers giving the Omega Chapter a total of 100 service hours for the event. Our chapter ranked second in donations raised for the event rounding out at $745.00. Mid-semester our ladies spent an evening at Kappa Kappa Gamma for the Dean’s List Dessert where we enjoyed many

laughs and Panhellenic unity. Alpha Gamma Delta will be hosting Café A La Alpha Gam, benefiting Camp Quality, on March 1st 6:00-9:00pm at the Chapter House. The Chapter has been hard at work singing

and dancing in preparation for this year’s songfest. This semester we continue to work towards obtaining the title of Jewel Status, an Alpha Gamma Delta international recognition from the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, for the fourth consecutive year with a donation of $2000.00.

The brothers of the Alpha Omicron chapter of Phi Gamma Delta hope everyone is having a great semester thus far. We have been hard at work in service, philanthropy and scholarship. We have helped out many people with service and look forward to many more events throughout the semester with the American Red Cross, Nazareth Housing and Habitat for Humanity. Along with service, philanthropy is going strong with two upcoming events. FIJI would like to invite everyone to our 9th annual Dodge ball tournament on March 24th benefiting the Akron Children’s Hospital. We have also been working with an organization called Hugs-N-Bugs that help children with cancer. We are putting on a spaghetti dinner for Hugs-N-Bugs March 10th and would love to see a huge turnout for the children. The brothers here at FIJI wish everyone the best of luck with the rest of your semester.

The Beta Tau chapter of Alpha Delta Pi has been greatly enjoying the start of spring 2012 by expanding our chapter and planning for fall 2012. We were also very excited to accept a transfer student from Ohio University (Xi Chapter).

In January, we held many sisterhoods and philanthropy events and ended the month with our chapter retreat—a fun learning experience for all sisters. Also in January several of our sisters made a trip to visit a newly formed Alpha Delta Pi chapter at Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. Our executive board and other chapter officers are looking forward to meeting other sisters across the nation as we attend the Alpha Delta Pi District IV Leadership Conference in February.

Our chapter is also looking forward to attending the Greek Leadership Awards in March. We are actively planning for our Lion Share kickball tournament, which will be held in April. This fundraiser helps us to meet our goal of raising $10,000 dollars and performing 11,000 hours of community service this year. Also in April, we are looking forward to our Black Diamond Ball formal, which will be an under the sea theme and participating in Songfest with the rest of the Greek community.

The sisters of Alpha Delta Pi would like to take the time to wish the rest of the Greek community and University of Akron students the best of luck as the semester continues. We hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable spring break.

The men of Phi Delta Theta have been busy and are off to a great start to Spring 2012. So far, Phi Delta Theta has excelled in recruitment with six new Phikeia (pledges). These six Phikeia are promising young men who will help our chapter grow and help promote our ideals. On January 23rd, Phi Delta Theta held a blood drive and collected over 40 pints of blood. We had such an excellent turn out, Aultman unfortunately had to turn individuals away because they ran out of blood bags. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to show up and help exceed their goal. On February 18th, a seven man team participated in the Polar Bear Jump and raised a total of $250 for Camp

Quality. Congratulations and thanks to those men who participated. Additionally, before attending the Polar Bear Jump, Phi Delta Theta held a breakfast social with the fine ladies of Alpha Gamma Delta. Phi Delta Theta would like to extend a gracious thank you to the ladies of Alpha Gamma Delta for a successful social. Phi Delta Theta has also been interacting with their alumni quite a bit. Thus far, they have held two events and have three more events planned. These other three events will be held later this semester into the early months of summer. In the coming months of Spring 2012, Phi Delta Theta will be holding their annual formal on March 24th and will also be celebrating Founder’s Day on April 14th.

The men of Lambda Chi Alpha have had a quick start to the semester. We have recruited six new great associates and we are on our second week of fraternal education. Recently, the men of Lambda Chi Alpha took a brotherhood trip to our national headquarters in Indianapolis, IN. The trip was a great success; we took 23 active members, and 3 associates. It was great for the new associates to get to know the fraternities history and what we as Lambda Chi’s are all about. After the tour of the headquarters, we traveled just a couple of miles to Butler University, to visit our brothers of the Alpha-Alpha chapter. There, we took a tour of their great

chapter house, and learned the history of their chapter. Also, we talked to their Alumni advisor, who also is the National Fraternal Educator. Everyone here at Gamma-Alpha is looking forward to the future, getting to know our new brothers and strengthening our Brotherhood.

The Panhellenic Community started the new year off on the right foot, with an all Panhellenic Sisterhood. The women that attended had the opportunity to make letters from Kathy, who graciously donated $50 of the proceeds to this year’s Panhellenic philanthropy,

Access. We were also very happy that Nuance came to perform for all attendees.

In February, the Panhellenic President, Jessica Fueston, and Vice President of Recruitment, Cristen Cotter, were able to attend the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values Conference in St. Louis. We were one out of two councils in our division to be recognized with the Membership Recruitment Award for 2011.

Also in February, women from the Panhellenic community part took in the Portage Lakes Polar Bear

Jump. Among hundreds of participants, many women from our Panhellenic community raised money to jump into a freezing cold lake. The money raised supports awareness and efforts for Stewart’s Caring Place, American Cancer Society, and Camp Quality of Ohio.

The Community looks forward to our upcoming sisterhoods to further support Access, and our risk management meeting, on the risks of fad dieting before Spring Break. We also enjoyed celebrating International Badge Day on March 5, in honor of fellow Panhellenic women and our organizations across the country.

The Panhellenic communities first Senior Sister of the Week is Jessica Bucher from Alpha Gamma Delta. Jessica was the past Vice President of Campus Relations and is currently the Vice President of Member Development for her chapter. She is also an honors student and is always helping out others. Jessica created “random acts of kindness day” where Alpha Gamma Delta hands out candy around campus.. She makes a point for members in Alpha Gamma Delta to know that she is always available if anyone needs her and is extremely organized and reliable. Additionally, Jessica always makes an effort to attend all PHC events. Congratulations Jessica!

The Spring 2012 semester has been off to a busy start! The Office of Greek Life Programs started the new year with a leadership retreat for all chapter

presidents and risk management chairs and the council executive officers. The day included a leadership style inventory, values exercises, and icebreakers. The risk management chairs were TIPS certified while chapter presidents and council officers created goals for our Greek community.
