Conserve Water-Many natives require little to no irriga-tion even on the hottest summer days.
Little to No Maintenance-Native plants also require minimal fer-
tilizing and pest control. Our clay soils are actually very rich in nutrients which native plants have adapted well at utilizing.
Reduce the Need for Pesticides-Native plants have developed their own defenses against many of the troublesome pests and insects in our area; therefore they don’t require many pesticides to stay healthy. Reducing pesticides lets natural pest control take over. This keeps garden toxins out of our yards, creeks and streams.
Support Local Ecology-As development replaces natural habitat, using native plants in your gar-den can help create a “bridge” for many of the creatures who call our remaining ecosystems home. Native plants will also promote more “ben-eficials” in your garden including, but not limited to: butterflies, ladybugs, praying mantis, lacewing, non-aggressive bumble bees, (fantastic for all home orchard enthusiasts,) hummingbirds etc.
Native Plants have evolved to coexist in our local geography and climate. Our region is notorious, for the most part, as having poor soil and unpredictable weather. With water
easily being depleted by thirsty, non-native plants and landscapes, the need to refocus energy in native plants and gardening is crucial for our ecosystem’s long-term health. California natives have several
gardening advantages and come in all shapes, sizes, scents and colors; California Natives hold their own against even the most brilliant of exotic species:
California Fuchsia or any other red-flowering native is a great attractant for our state’s hum-mingbird species.
Rather than just feeding the nectar of the flowers, humming birds derive most of their proteins and fats from aphids, gnats and mosquitoes.

Native bees are non-aggressive towards humans unless provoked, yet actively defend against other
non-native bee and wasp species.
Did you know that native flowering plants such as the California Poppy, California Holly, Western Redbud, and the California Wild Rose are great at attracting non-aggressive native bees?
