Having attended Assump-
tion for up to nine years and
as little as two, all of the
eighth graders have so many
memories from this huge fam-
ily that they will never forget!
Starting with learning Out-
law words from Miss M, we
then continued to master the
alphabet in first grade with
Mrs. Hammond. Introducing
us to similes, we embarked
on a lifetime journey of poetic
work with Miss Shields. (We’re
not plagiarizing, Mrs. Sutlick!)
With Mrs. Call we discovered
the divine works of dividing
and how to overcome chal-
lenges in life. In fourth grade
Miss Michels taught us how to
see past the outside and be
thankful for what we have.
Preparing us for middle
school, Mrs. Montgomery
broke us of our chatting
habit...at least for that year.
Mr. Spiess, the never-ending
story teller, always gave us a
good laugh and good morals.
Mrs. Michels brought us
closer to our inner selves,
never gave up on us, and al-
ways believed we were good
way deep down. Through it all,
Mr. Gordon has always been
right there with us whether
shooting hoops with us on the
playground or working through
complicated math problems.
Mrs. Brinson, our go-to per-
son, is always there to answer
any question we have. And
last, but definitely not least,
Mrs. Sutlick, our Mama Bear,
always there to protect us,
and wanting the best for each
and every one of us. A big
thank you to all the teachers
and staff who we never got the
chance to have; you still
guided us through our As-
sumption journey. Since you
all have been a big part of our
lives in these past years we
wanted to tell you how much
you meant to us and how
thankful we are to have you.
So for now, goodbye, but this
not the last time you’ll see us!
On their way to the DeSales
Step Up Day on May 4, the
eighth graders, reflected on all
the fun times they had at As-
sumption. Teresa Acock could
not stop talking about how
much she loved making the
second grade ornaments.
Andrew Alexander agreed, but
he also enjoyed going to Baker
City in fifth grade. Josie
Anhorn’s favorite memory was
also in fifth grade, but it was
the Pendleton Underground.
Emily Baumgart loved spend-
ing time with her friends in
their “Kardashion Family’.
Kayla Beechinor’s favorite
memory was watching memo-
ries movies with Father Kevin
in seventh grade religion. On
the exact opposite of watch-
ing movies, Destinee Bollinger
enjoyed playing in the park
after the Pendleton Under-
ground field trip in fifth grade.
Nick Brown’s favorite memory
of playing five sports and be-
ing with the coaches also had
to deal with being active.
Jane Conely and Jordan
Duehn disagreed with all the
above and said the dam field
trip was the best. John Crow-
ley’s favorite memory was
also out of town; it was com-
pleting two touchdown passes
in Dayton. Kyler Dunn had a
musical memory of Mrs.
Hamada rapping Noah’s Ark
in algebra. Amy Elmenhurst
also had a classroom memory
of eating waffles in Spanish
class. Not being able to de-
cide between all of his great
memories, Bill Ferrera said he
likes how the teachers made
him a better person and how
he had twenty-one tackles in
one football game. Cara Hall
also liked playing outside,
doing leap frog in seventh
grade. Nicole Hamada loved
watching all the little kids
grow up through the years.

wonderful memories in our hearts as we enter into high
school. We love Assumption!
By: The 8th grade Journalism class
Mrs. Sutlick's geography and English class was Kaleo Healy’s
favorite experience at Assumption. The field trip to Nelson Irri-
gation was enjoyed by many people, but it especially made the
top of Scott Kimball’s and Brendon Kemetz’s list. Billy Kholer
enjoyed watching his best friend Scott Kimball trip on the soak-
ing wet grass and staying wet for the rest of the day. Speaking
of trips, Allesyn Lyons remembers going to the math team com-
petition in Spokane in seventh grade. Thinking back on her
years at Assumption, Cassidy Meliah said she will never forget
the time she had a paint- your-nails-party with Mrs. Sutlick in
eighth grade. Cole Miedema or Coleus (his Greek name) appre-
ciated the Greek Olympics in the sixth grade with Mr. Spiess.
Brittney Postlewait, who was not here for the sixth grade Olym-
pics, enjoyed her first day at Assumption in the seventh grade.
Being in elementary school and being a younger kid was Pablo
Rodriguez favorite memory. Anna Ruthven could not stop talk-
ing about working with the Green Park buddies in fourth grade.
Lastly, John Paul Sharkey said he loved getting to know the
teachers as friends through the years. Once again, we bid As-

~Field Trip Frenzy~ Field trips have been a very popular
event at Assumption School for the
months of April and May. On April 12, the
first and second graders went to Wa-Hi
to have a "Farm Day" and visit all of the
FFA animals. On the 16th, grades 1-5
went to Cordiner Hall to the Walla Walla
Kids Read event. Thursday, April 19, the
fourth grade class traveled to Whitman
Mission. The last field trip of April was
on Friday the 27th, when the seventh
graders visited Forage Genetics Interna-
tional, where they learned about the de-
velopment of the alfalfa seed.
We are going out with a bang in May
with MANY field trips! On Wednesday,
May 2, the eighth graders toured Nelson
Irrigation, and on that Friday, May 4, the
eighth graders journeyed across town to
experience DeSales! On May 14 the fifth
graders went to Baker City, and on the
17th the fourth graders went to Tamast-
likt. May 21st saw the sixth graders go to
Ice Harbor Dam. How fun! On the 22nd
the third graders went to the Walla Walla
Public Library, the 23rd saw the fourth
graders going to McNary Dam, and on
the 30th, the fifth graders are going to
the Pendleton Underground. The very
last field trip of the year will be our
eighth graders traveling to Portland for
their end of the year trip. They will be
gone on the 30th and the 31st. We wish
you all a great summer, and maybe you
will get to travel to some interesting
places some-
time!

and the large and small intestines. Mrs.
Brinson’s favorite part was taking out
the frogs eyes and watching them hold
the pearly yellow ball in their hands.
They loved seeing the tongue that at-
taches from the front of the mouth in-
stead of the back. One thing that the
first graders didn't know was that the
eye of a frog is a yellow color and a little
smaller than a dime. We hope to see
these first graders pursue their love of
science!
by Nicole Hamada and Cole Miedema
On April 26, the fascinated first graders
wandered down to Mrs. Brinson’s science
classroom. Awaiting them was a group of
scientific eighth graders and eight mum-
mified frogs. Demonstrating how to dis-
sect frogs, the middle scholars showed
the eager, young first graders where the
heart, lungs, kidneys, and nose were lo-
cated. With their safety goggles in place,
the first graders were eager to know what
the inside of a frog looked liked. Frogs
and humans are very similar in organ
structure. They all have the same vital
organs such as: the heart, liver, stomach,
This year on May18, our school held Step Up Day which
is when every class goes to visit the classroom and teacher
they will be in next year. Sometimes they work on a project
or just get to know the teacher a little better so they won’t
be so nervous next year when schools starts. Every class
spent about a half-hour in the classroom then headed out-
side for some playtime with their school “families.” On May
4 the eighth graders spent time at DeSales for a half of a
day to really get a real feel for high school. At DeSales, they
attended the elective classes and spent time hearing about
high school life. Though nervous, they are ready for high
school and all its excitement and challenges.

On the weekend of May 19-20, students from Assump-
tion received the Sacrament of First Communion and Con-
firmation. There were students from second through sev-
enth grades involved. The students from second grade
are: Quinton Baldwin, Mary Elizabeth Balof, Hadley
Beechinor, Brixen Betzler, Ryan Chase, Andres Dankel,
Seamus Doohan, Payton Graham, Zoey Green, Colton
Hamada, Samuel Haugen, Carson Jones, Aaron
Kjeldgaard, Kelly Michelson, Lauryn Riney, Simon Scheel,
Maddie Wahl, Christopher Williams, and Francis Worden.
The third graders include: Daniel Arellano, Christian
Chavez, Ryan Martuscelli, and Katelyn Hassler. From
fourth grade is Maya Betzler. Brock Betzler represented
fifth grade and sixth graders were Kaitlyn Beal and Neriah
Cortez–Meza. Seventh grader Katie Ankrom rounded out
the group. Tazie Betzler, the youngest of the Betzlers,
was baptized. What a wonderful way to end our school
year with all of these very important Sacraments! It is
such a blessed time in our spiritual life. First Comm-
union is when you receive Jesus Christ in the Eucharist for the first
time, while Confirmation is when you are getting confirmed or en-
tering the church.
On Saturday May 19, the St. Pat’s Mass was held at 5:30.
Then on Sunday morning May 20, there was a Mass at 9:00 at St.
Francis and a Mass at Assumption at 10:30. Congratulations to all
the kids who received their First Communion and Confirmation!
We wish you much luck in your spiritual life, and hope you con-
tinue to grow in your church. By Amy and Jane
On May 11 the Assumption stu-
dents were in for a treat when the
WWVA Acro Knights stopped by for
an amazing performance. The
Knights are a gymnastics team that
can perform all kinds of special
stunts. They even included some
Assumption people in their act!
Every year they perform an end-of-
the-year show and this year is enti-
tle “Gilligan’s Island.” We loved the
show. Thank you to both the Acro
Knights and Home and School for a
wonderful way to end our school
week!

On Wednesday, April 9 the whole school gathered outside by the Mary statue to honor Mary. Two students from each grade
also brought up cans of flowers to put in front of the statue of Mary. Then the two selected eighth graders, John Paul Sharkey
and Cassidy Meliah, placed the crown of flowers on Mary. Students from each grade also participated in a live rosary. After the
live rosary, there was a picnic lunch with the parents, and the home and school gave out popsicles. May Crowning began
when Assumption first became a school and has been a tradition ever since. Thank you to Mrs. Michels for putting the May
crowning together. Everyone had a good time.

Spring sports season ended up great!
The track team held their last meet on
May 10 in Dayton where they had many
athletes place and
come out of the meet
with their personal
best. They practiced
four days a week and
participated in six meets over the sea-
son. Many thanks to Coaches Gordon,
Spiess and Sutlick for their hard work
and dedication.
The DeSales softball team is lucky to
have six of our talented 8th grade girls:
Brittney, Cara, Cassidy, Allesyn, Teresa
and Jane. Already qualifying for the
state tournament, the team will play for
the championship on May 25
and 26.
7th grade softball players,
Kaylee Brown and Celeste
Langley, are playing for the
PiHi team this season while

~Mother’s Day at Assumption~ Started in 1872, Mother’s Day was
and still is celebrated on the second
Sunday of May. On May 13 the Assump-
tion students took advantage of the day
to pamper their moms. They showered
them with breakfast in bed, a treat at
Blue Palm, dinner, and presents which
consisted of key chains, recipe tile hold-
ers, bookmarks, poems, collages, hats
with bows, flowers, and a “mom’s sur-
vival kit.” What mom couldn’t use a
survival kit? Thank you to all our moms
that have always been there to support
and protect us!
We looked up quotes about moms
and found these in tribute to all the
Assumption moms out there….
“If you value Wisdom and hold tightly
to her, great honors will be yours. It will
be like wearing a glorious crown of beau-
tiful flowers. Being a full-time mother is
one of the highest salaried jobs in my
field, since the payment is pure love.”

Dear Darla,
I have a friend who always tries to be the
boss of me. How can I change that ?
~Bossed Around
Dear Bossed Around,
First thing you need to do is let your friend
know that they are not the boss of you.
You are friends and should keep it that
way, not having one friend better than the
other.

Dear Darla,
If someone is being annoying me, I ask
them to stop and they wont. What
should I do?
~Then Annoyed
Dear the Annoyed,
Sometimes when people feel lonely
they pick a person out someone out of
a crowd and try to be friendly with them
this person probably doesn't have very
many friends . So just try to be nice and
a friend and maybe they will stop being
annoying and start to be a friend..
