Cloud computing can drive energy savings by improving server utilization (the measurement of the portion of a server’s capacity that an application actively uses). This study confirms that cloud computing can reduce carbon emissions by 30 to 90 percent for major business applications today and that future energy savings are likely as cloud computing continues to evolve. Companies who adopt cloud computing will accrue the inherent business benefits of this technology, and will also play a crucial role in making IT more sustainable by significantly reducing energy consumption.
