Green building, whether newly constructed or renovated, begins with design. The design sector holds career opportunities for individuals involved with each characteristic of green building, from site selection to waste reduction. Some of the careers in the design sector are Urban Designer/Land Use Planner, Green Architect, Sustainability Analyst, Landscape Architect, Energy Engineer, and Interior Design.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY SITE AND DESIGN

In new construction, the design begins with Urban Designers and Land Use Planners determining site selection. They are responsible for identifying, evaluating and selecting an environmentally friendly site long before construction begins. They focus on assessing a sites attributes and determining its suitability to the proposed project as well as assist with the concept design of the proposed building.

A degree in urban planning, regional planning, engineering or related field are required for these positions. Employers also like to see relevant experience and applicants who are accredited by the American Institute of Certified Planners. The principle employers for the position of Urban Designer/Land Use Planner are towns, counties and consulting firms.

Once a site is selected, the project then turns to the Green Architect who will design the building taking into account the site and the surrounding attributes. They are responsible for reducing the negative impact that building and construction can have on the natural environment and human health. They are in charge of creating a design that is both functional and beautiful as well as energy efficient. This requires the ability to be innovative and have strong conceptual and follow through design skills, as well as be technically proficient, particularly when it comes to green renovations. The growth of the green building industry will yield many opportunities for licensed architects and aspiring architects as well. Although there will be openings from internships to senior project architects, you will need to be a registered architect with either a bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture and have experience in construction administration or project management for a senior level position.

Along with selecting the site and designing the building, there is also the very important job of the surrounding landscape. Landscape architects are responsible for designing environmentally friendly areas that will frame the renovated building or new construction. They focus on the design of these areas so that they are not only functional, but also beautiful, and compatible with the natural environment. They analyze the natural elements of the site, such as the climate, soil, and drainage; observe where sunlight falls on the site at different times of the day; and assess the effect of existing buildings, roads, walkways, and utilities.

In addition to being registered, most companies will look for Landscape Architects that hold a master’s degree in landscape architecture or civil engineering. Aside from that, you should have an appreciation for nature, enjoy working with your hands, and have creative vision and artistic talent that will help advance the field of sustainable building.

Career Insider

WATER AND MATERIAL CONSERVATION IN MIND

Ensuring that a newly constructed green building or renovated one actively works to save water and conserve materials, requires the expertise of a handful of professions. The architect will take both into consideration when designing a structure, as will a landscaper when choosing plant and hardscape material for around the structure. In addition to these two career fields, Sustainability or Green Building Analysts and Interior Designers also work to limit the amount of water used and raw materials consumed in green building.

The job of a Sustainability Analyst ranges from seeking out green building materials for meeting sustainable design goals to performing and reviewing energy audits. Essentially they help to support the project from concept through completion.

For entry level positions, this occupation focuses on researching suppliers of green building materials. For instance, they may be tasked with finding everything from sustainably harvested wood to recycled blue jean insulation and low flow fixtures in order to meet the design goals set in place for the project. Advanced Sustainability Analysts are involved with energy audits, the research of emerging green technologies, developing plans for greening a client’s existing structure and operations, and verifying that a structure meets green requirements.

To obtain a position as a Sustainability Analyst you need at least a bachelor’s degree in a related engineering discipline, architecture, energy management, conservation, sustainability planning or related area. LEED training for entry-level positions is preferred and for more senior level positions it is required that you be a LEED accredited professional (AP) with experience in the field. A working knowledge of building systems, energy efficiency, green building and sustainability will be something that employers are looking for along with someone who is passionate about promoting sustainability.

The focus of a Green Interior Designer is that interior space be functional, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants, and is aesthetically attractive and sustainable. Their job is not just to decorate the space, but to have a hand in designing the space. They work closely with the building architect (or blueprint if remodeling a space) to determine such things as natural interior lighting and access into and out of the structure. Knowledge of these factors helps determine the placement and selection of materials to be incorporated into the design.

Career Opportunities in the Design Sector of the Green Building Industry

Over the next three issues of the Green Careers Journal, we will take a more in depth look at the different career sectors of green building; Design, Construction and Manufacturing. In this issue we will look at those involved in the design of the building from landscaping to interior design and all that falls in between.

6 www.greencareerscenter.com November/December 2009

To work as an Interior Designer it is recommended that you have a bachelor’s degree in interior design, sustainable design, green design or architecture. However, there are some art & design colleges which offer a certificate in sustainability which could be useful for those looking for an apprenticeship. Being a LEED accredited profession (AP) who has a working knowledge of design programs such as Illustrator and 3D modeling software is preferred. In addition to a multitude of technical, analytical, creative skills, and a working knowledge of architectural elements, Interior Designers also need to be effective communicators. Making sure that you meet the sustainability wants and needs of the client is paramount.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND HUMAN HEALTH

The number one thing that comes to most people’s minds when they think about green building is energy efficiency. It is the idea that a structure needs less energy to operate and is designed to emphasize that the indoor environment be healthy and comfortable for those who occupy it. We have already mentioned the majority of career fields which assist in making a green building or renovation energy efficient; architects, sustainability analysts, and interior designers. The remaining career field which focuses on energy efficiency and human health are the Energy Engineers. These individuals play a part in the building or remodeling process from conception to completion.

Energy Engineers are responsible for evaluating the project design, making recommendations for improving energy use and indoor air quality, as well as auditing existing buildings to determine where improvements and upgrades should be made. They work on the analysis of utility-consumption and utility-rate, perform field surveys to determine where efficiency can be improved, work with architects and interior designers on the development and design of new structures, and determine the economic and life cycle costs of building systems.

A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or similar engineering discipline in most cases is required to work as an energy engineer. You may find, however, that certain employers require only some coursework in a technical field, such as engineering or architecture, along with previous experience. Familiarity with building energy modeling software as well as an understanding of regulations and code is also necessary to perform this job well. And some employers require that you be a certified Professional Engineer (PE).

THE ADVANCEMENT OF GREEN BUILDING

As we look to the future of green building, the structures that aren’t green will be in the minority. So no matter which field of green design your background focuses on or which field you are currently studying, green building and remodeling have the potential of producing millions of job opportunities and providing you with your next or first career.

Career Outlook

The combination of residential, commercial and school structures yields over 120 million buildings in the United States. Although these buildings provide us with a great deal of shared benefits, they also generate a significant negative effect upon the environment and its natural resources.

The U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC), Green Building Research page (http://www.usgbc.org/DisplayPage.aspx?CMSPageID=1718) reveals the overwhelming impact the built environment has upon our natural environment, our economy, and human health. According to the USGBC, the following percentages are current as of this year.

Buildings in the United States account for:

39% of total energy consumption72% of total electricity consumption14% of total water consumption per day38% of total carbon dioxide emissions40% of raw materials use30% of waste output (136 million tons per year)

Although a shift towards more sustainable building practices is gaining steam, the information above confirms that a majority of buildings in the U.S. are still very inefficient and that there is work to be done.

A CHANGING LANDSCAPE

The work will come by both the demolition and construction of new green buildings as well as the renovation and greening of the millions of existing buildings. A recent article at CONTRACTORmag.com quotes green building consultant Jerry Yudelson saying that “…more people are going green each year, and there is nothing on the horizon that will stop this trend.” This statement addresses new construction projects as well as highlights the increased renovation of existing buildings.

In a 2008 study, Turner Construction Company found that 83% of respondents (comprised of commercial real estate developers, rental building owners, brokers, architects, engineer and others) would be “extremely or very likely to seek LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for buildings they are planning to build within the next three years.” Another study, the 2008 Green Survey: Existing Buildings performed by Incisive Media, along with the U.S. Green Building Council and two others, found that “80% of commercial building owners have allocated funds to green initiatives this year.”

So even as we remain in a recession, owners of yet to be built and existing residential, commercial and industrial buildings alike are seeking ways to improve the efficiency of their structures in an effort to reduce the costs of operating them. The result of these individuals seeking sustainability in the built environment will be numerous job opportunities during a time when it is needed most.

THE CHARACTER OF A GREEN BUILDING

A green building, also known as a sustainable or high performance building, can be defined as a structure that is designed, renovated, operated or reused with a focus to decrease impact on the environment, human health, and increase resource efficiency. The idea is that effective green building/renovating can reduce operating costs through the efficient use of energy and resources, improve human health and productivity through better indoor air quality, and lessen the effect of building construction and operation on the environment with green practices throughout the construction or renovation process.

To better help define green building, the following are the five main characteristics of a green building.

From politics to fashion, green issues are starting to permeate society. As consumers and government regulations demand more tangible action toward environmental goals, new specialized environmental fields are maturing. Two fields that are becoming increasingly relevant are carbon accounting and green building. Are you interested in entering a new and rapidly evolving field? Do you want to develop an additional skill set to complement your primary field? While these fields have developed somewhat independently so far, job seekers in either field would be better prepared by exploring their intersections.

As Carbon Accounting Coordinator at Clean Air-Cool Planet, I advise businesses and universities on calculating their greenhouse gas emissions and identifying the most cost effective reductions of those emissions. This requires gathering data on activities that create emissions, such as burning fuel oil or applying fertilizer, and then using available tools to multiply that data by emissions factors to find the tons of each greenhouse gas emitted and the total carbon dioxide equivalents (eCO2). Offsets, such as purchased renewable energy certificates, are often calculated to identify the entity’s net emissions.

This is an exciting time to be involved in carbon accounting as the protocol continues to develop and the community gains experience and deals with more nuanced problems. While my job focuses on carbon accounting and climate action planning, these activities can be just one part of the position. Universities, consulting firms, and large corporations with well developed environmental efforts are the primary drivers of carbon accounting in today’s market. However, increased regulations mean consistently growing demand for this field.

Buildings encompass many of the emitting activities at a business or university. For example, the heating and cooling systems, the electricity to run various appliances, and the production of waste water that needs to be treated are all part of the building’s contribution to the overall carbon footprint. Nationally, the US Green Building Council (USGBC) reports that buildings account for 38% of US carbon dioxide emissions. As a carbon accountant, these figures keep buildings in the forefront of my planning.

Fortunately, an entire field of expertise and resources has developed around the issue of greening buildings and how we use them. USGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program has grown to encompass 35,000 building projects and 100,000 accredited professionals (AP), ranging from architects to subcontractors to interior designers. Emphasis on energy usage within the LEED system is growing as the field matures. In the new LEED v3, the green elements in a building are given points then weighted depending on the environmental issue mitigated. Building elements that reduce greenhouse gas emissions are given a weight of “25”, 60% higher than any other category in the certification system

Career Profile

For the carbon accounting professional, the growth of the green building industry presents many opportunities, including providing needed support to builders. Greenhouse gas inventories can build a strong justification for adopting green building standards within an organization, as seen in many of the climate action plans submitted by signatories of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. It is also the carbon accountant who tracks the actual reductions in the entity’s carbon footprint after a team of building professionals completes a project. An ongoing question within the sustainability community is, “When is it environmentally preferable to overhaul existing building stock rather than add new buildings, even if the new buildings are very green?” Both carbon accounting professionals and green building professionals will have to work closely to develop protocols based on life cycle assessment of embodied carbon and available building science to reach an informed decision.

More direct interaction between carbon accountants and builders will allow progress to both quicken and be better informed. As explained by Maury Ross, LEED AP and Sustainability Consultant, “for carbon accounting to have the greatest impact in green building, it must become an integral part of the design process as opposed to being an additive cost. If we consider these issues from the beginning, it is easier to make adjustments or changes with little impact to budget as opposed to waiting until construction or beyond.” To provide fully integrated services, design/build firms will likely need to develop this expertise in-house. Firms may require their traditional staff to gain new skills in the evaluation of carbon emissions, or they may create positions for dedicated carbon accountants. Either approach requires the growth of skills integrating the two related fields.

In the buildings sector, aspiring individuals can seek out architectural schools that offer coursework on carbon accounting. For those in mid-career, or seeking something outside an entire degree, there are several training courses available, such as those at the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (www.ghginstitute.org). My advice to anyone wanting to enter this field is that actually working through the challenges of your first greenhouse gas inventory. This is where you will learn the most. Fortunately, there are many opportunities to practice by volunteering to help a local school or community organization. Most people performing greenhouse gas inventories within a business or organization are doing so as only one component of their jobs, such as an engineer within facilities management. Developing these skills now will establish an added service that you can offer to a potential employer.

At the same time, those of us involved with carbon accounting will be able to create better climate action plans if we understand more about the potential and limitations of green buildings and the related practices. Whether that means becoming a LEED AP or simply maintaining close relationships with builders in your organization, it will greatly smooth the process of climate action planning.

Both building and climate change professionals have the rare opportunity of participating in a rapidly evolving field that constantly changes. Because the course and standards are not yet carved in stone, individuals can still make contributions which influence both its direction and the quality of the results. It’s clear that the most valuable input will come from those who learn how these fields intersect in the process of making buildings greener.

Accounting for Greener Buildings

the way a building is oriented and its impact on the surrounding area. With new green buildings, the structure is oriented so the sun and existing trees help to heat and cool (shade) the structure.

2. The use of energy efficient design which helps create a tighter seal on a structure making the indoor climate easier to control. The use of energy efficient materials such as LED lights and Energy Star appliances help to reduce the energy required to operate the structure.

3. Water Savings by using low flow fixtures such as faucets, toilets and shower heads help to reduce the consumption of water as well as lower water bills.

4. A healthy indoor environment that is promoted by fresh-air ventilation that helps to eliminate the stale indoor air with fresh air all while conserving energy.

5. Material conservation and waste reduction through the use of sustainable and recycled products.

The USGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) standard “promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance” in the five key areas noted above. Each area lends itself to greater efficiency and a lowered impact on the environment. They also provide us with a window to the career fields that will be in higher demand as the green building industry grows.

CAREER FIELDS IMPACTED BY THE GROWTH OF GREEN BUILDING AND RENOVATION

The field of Green Building/Renovation holds the opportunity for individuals from a variety of backgrounds. From urban and land use planners, to landscape and building architects, engineers and educators, plumbers and carpenters, interior designers and product manufacturers, consider green building to be the environmentally conscious equivalent of traditional building.

Like traditional building, green building can be broken down into three basic sectors; design, construction and manufacturing. Each green building sector holds the same employment opportunities that one can find in traditional building, only in some cases it is with the addition of some “green” training.

It is likely that the greatest increase of employment opportunities will be in the renovation of existing structures. According to Yudelson, “The fastest growing LEED rating system in 2008 was the LEED for Existing Buildings program.” Unlike the construction of new green buildings which can employ most of the same people who construct traditional buildings, renovating existing structures will create new employment opportunities that would otherwise not exist.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE FIELD

Green building requires creative thinking individuals who can imagine, design and construct a cleaner, greener built environment. It calls for individuals who can determine where sunlight will fall at all times of the year in order to take full advantage of passive heating and cooling. It calls for individuals with an understanding of the wind and where it will blow to better place energy-generating wind turbines. It demands architects, contractors and builders who are committed to sustainable design and producing energy-efficient, environmentally friendly structures. Green building calls for the hard work of carpenters, engineers, electricians, roofers, and plumbers who can put all the pieces together. And don’t forget the sales, marketing, and investment personnel needed to fund and sell the product. The list continues on and on.

Essentially there is a need for just about every discipline in the green building field. So whether you are a seasoned professional, a recent college graduate or a mid-career changer the green building industry has opportunities to be explored.

New York, NY - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Acting Administrator George Pavlou paid a visit to STRIVE/East Harlem Employment Services, Inc. late last month to speak with students and community members about the importance of green jobs. STRIVE was a recent recipient of $500,000 in grant funding, which has gone towards training New Yorkers for jobs assessing and cleaning up brownfields sites. Funding for these grants is supported by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

“In many ways, EPA’s Brownfields program was an idea ahead of its time,” said Mr. Pavlou. “It was one of the first big national programs to put money into the hands of organizations and local governments that not only creates jobs and teaches valuable skills to those seeking employment, but also ultimately cleans up our communities.”

STRIVE has a successful, established job training program and they plan to train 150 participants and place 113 graduates in environmental careers. The training program, which is two 12-week, 310-hour cycles per year, includes courses in HAZWOPER, OSHA 10-hour construction health and safety, confined space entry, and photovoltaic installation. STRIVE is in East Harlem where residents are disproportionately impacted by poverty and environmental hazards.

Since 1998, EPA has awarded more than $25 million in brownfields job training funds. More than 5,000 people have completed EPA-funded training programs, with more than 3,250 obtaining employment in the environmental fields, earning an average wage of $13.81 per hour. EPA established the Brownfields Job Training Program to help residents take advantage of jobs created by the assessment, cleanup and sustainable reuse of brownfields sites and to ensure that the economic benefits derived from brownfields redevelopment remain in the affected communities.

Brownfields are sites where expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act (Brownfields Law) was passed. The Brownfields Law expanded the definition of what is considered a brownfield, so communities may now focus on mine-scarred lands or sites contaminated by petroleum or the manufacture and distribution of illegal drugs. EPA’s Brownfields Program encourages redevelopment of America’s estimated 450,000 abandoned and contaminated waste sites.

On an average day, SCE provides power for 11 million individuals, 800 communities and cities, 5,000 large businesses, and 280,000 small businesses in central, coastal and Southern California. Delivering that power takes 16 utility interconnections, 4,900 transmission and distribution circuits, 365 transmission and distribution crews, the days and nights more than 14,000 employees, and over a century of experience.

Our heritage at SCE is based on reliability, and our history is defined by a proud tradition of service performed by generations of diverse, dedicated, inspired individuals.

Starting with the certainty that our greatest asset is the quality and capabilities of our employees, we strive to attract, retain, develop, nurture and advance a diverse and talented workforce.
