The True Meaning of GreeningThe term “green” is used a lot. In our case “green” describes products that are cleaner, safer, energy saving and generally good for the environment. Again… overused? In our case it is exactly what Martech Research is all about. Our “green” also means keeping your business in the “black”.

We have taken Old World innovations to a level that no one else has even considered. Our more than three decades of chemistry research involves Old World common sense and combined them with new technologies to provide biodegradable concepts that avoid the use of chlorinated and heavy metal type compounds. In other words, we have not only learned from days of old – but have taken these proven ideas to higher level than any other company on earth.

For starters, Martech Research takes Mother Nature’s queue and combines innovative techniques to eliminate blockages and odors that build up from man-made pollutions. These detrimental compounds become hard as rubber, and often smell worse than manure. Sure, the odor is terrible, but it also creates a corrosive problem from the Hydrogen Sulfide that damages concrete and metal. The biodegradable components also create an environment very undesirable to humans and animals due to fungi along with the disease-bearing compounds they create.

The Upside of Green DownstreamOur process term is called “Green Downstream” for a very good reason. It describes formulations that digest these accumulated biohazards with natural enzymes. These technologies actually eat these harmful pollutants. Furthermore, each ingredient goes after a specific type of compound to break it down into small unit-building blocks. Not only do these compounds work to eliminate blockages and/or odors, but are used to maintain the cleansing and balance in pipes, drains, sewers and P.O.T.W.s.

Clearing the FOGThe first group of compounds that have a detrimental impact on the environment are fats, oils and greases - or as we call it -“F.O.G.” Chemically, the fats are substances that can be broken down into a long chain of fatty acids - or carboxylic acids and glycerol. These so-called cleaning compound (even something as simple as Ivory soap) are the sodium salts of the fatty acids. This simple soap has a low density, so it floats, and is a very hard material to eliminate. In a molten state, it has a tendency to stick to cooler surfaces that makes them solidify. This is one reason why heavy alkaline degreasers are not effective on F.O.G.s.

Making Peace with GreaseEssentially, heavy alkaline degreasers just move grease and fat around. F.O.G.s have the same basic structure. Since fats are usually from animal sources, the grease and oils are a thinner version of the other two. This represents a class of compounds called Triglycerides. Most are liquids or have very low melting points. The higher the melting point is a characteristic of hydrogenated chains, also known as saturated hydrocarbons. Although, the unsaturated


triglycerides are liquid, the unsaturation causes the molecules to cross link with oxygen as a catalyst causing the material to form a type of polymer that resembles rubber. This is more commonly known as the “grease cap.”

The “Degrading” Side of Chemistry - And How It Works So WellDegradation reactions are performed by enzymes which are excreted by bacteria and fungi. Sometimes the mixture of microbes that are needed are not always present for optimum performance. Therefore a group of microbes are needed to perform the six steps required for complete degradation of the F.O.G.s that are so damaging.

The second classes are the proteins that come from meats, legumes (beans), fish and some cheeses. They are made up of amino acids, which consist of a short chain of hydrocarbons and carboxylic acid. All of these powerful proteins contain amino acids (Methionine, Cyteine and Cystine) which produce sulfur. When they decompose in a non-controlled environment, they cause the liberation of hydrogen sulfide which is very corrosive. It literally eats through concrete and metal. Adding to the problem are the amino functions which decomposes in a non-controlled environment to create their incredibly offensive odors. One such corrosive compound is called Cadaverine, which can be compared to the unmistakable odor of decaying flesh.

Green Downstream at WorkWhen these corrosive compounds and horrible odors are treated with enzymes called Proteases (and protease-producing microbes) a controlled environment is produced. From there the adverse proteins are digested into more controllable units that go downstream without causing any corrosion, odor or blockage problems. The sequence of degradation is very similar to that of fats, in that a consortia of microbes and enzymes are needed to break these compounds down into their amino acid units. Some are then re-assembled to create more enzymes. This in turn continues the process to improve the efficiency of the system even more.

The third class of compounds consists of starches and large carbohydrates. These come from breads, paper goods, dairy products and some glues. They accumulate in drains, pipes, sewer lines and POTWs. These starches and carbohydrates come from long “chains” of sugars and can start to ferment to produce both alcohol and biofilm. Both cause offensive odors, blockage and corrosion. They are digested by a class of compounds called Amylases, Cellulases and hemi Cellulases. They also come from microbes that produce these compounds. Many times the microbes in sewers and drain areas cannot break down the complex starches. The amylase in our formulations break down the starches and use the simple sugars in a productive fashion without the formation of odors, biofilm and acids.

A Whole World of “Earth-Healing” Products All of these harmful compounds come out of restaurants, households, commercial and industrial buildings and institutional facilities. And while other “green” type cleaners use friendly compounds to wash away some of the problems, the offending material remains intact, builds up and turns into odor-causing and corrosive-creating compounds. The only way to truly help the earth combat these materials is to treat it at the source.

Martech’s strategy resolves many of the problems associated with the maintenance of drains, pipes, sewer lines and P.O.T.W.s. Furthermore, if implemented in all communities, our processes represent a significant cost savings.

C-5™ Odor Neutralizer is an all natural, botanical product formulated to digest odor producing compounds generated from the decomposition of organic materials. The odor producing compounds are organic compounds containing sulphur or nitrogen functionality. Some of these compounds include the mercaptan family of compounds, which are sulphur based. The amino functional hydrocarbons of low molecular weight also create some petrifying malodors.

The decomposition of meat or carcasses creates hydrogen sulfide, but also creates caderverine, which is a hydrocarbon diamine. These compounds are produced when the bacteria digests the organic proteins in an anaerobic environment.
