    Solid Waste Recycling

    Dayton started curbsiderecycling collection in 1990.

    In 2008, Dayton collected3,067 tons of recycledwaste.

    Every ton of paper that isrecycled saves 17 trees.

    The energy saved when werecycle one glass bottle is

    enough to power aconventional light bulb forfour hours.

    Recycling benefits the airand water by creating a netreduction in 10 majorcategories of air pollutantsand eight major categories

    of water pollutants.

    Anti-Idling/ Fuel Conservation Policy

    In 2005, the City ofDayton implemented a Fuel

    Conservation Policy toreduce fuel consumptionand save money on fuelcosts. Unnecessary idling ofvehicles and equipment isstrictly prohibited.

    Annual fuel consumptionfrom 2006 to 2008decreased by 345,860gallons (or 26.4%).

    Alternative Fuel Vehicles

    Dayton has purchasedsome hybrid vehicles andcontinues to researchalternative-fueled vehicles,including CompressedNatural Gas.

    Used Oil for Heating

    Since 2006, FleetManagement has beenreusing waste motor oil that

    is drained from City vehiclesduring routinemaintenance.

    Fleet has the capacity ofstoring approximately 2,500gallons of waste oil for

    reuse in a water boilerheating system. Thissystem has been used as asecondary heating systemin order to reduce heatingcosts.

    The system offers apotential annual savings of$10,000 to $20,000.

    In 2006, the DaytonDepartment of Watercompleted a baseline carbon

    emissions estimate for allits activities.

    The baseline estimateinvolved a completeinventory of all utilitycomponents, a review of

    operational efficiency, andidentification of cost andenergy reductionopportunities.

    Lime Recycling/ Reuse

    Lime utilized in thedrinking water softeningprocess is recycled for reuse

    in the water treatmentprocess, and the excess isapplied to land to enhancethe quality of farm fields.

    In addition, the lime is apotentially valuable product

    for which we continue tolook for reuse customers, tosave disposal costs.

    Alternative Fuels, Methane RecaptureBoilers and Electric Generating Facility

    The Dayton WastewaterTreatment Plant generates

    600,000 cubic feet ofmethane gas per day.

    This gas is utilized as fuelfor boilers that provide bothheat for buildings and heatfor processes. In addition,

    the plant has the ability togenerate 2,160 kw ofelectricity with themethane. The electricgenerating facility is usedfor peak electric loadings.

    Energy-Efficient Pumps and Motors

    In the Department ofWater, an initiative to

    upgrade the energyefficiency of pumps andmotors has been underwayfor a number of years.

    The pumps and motors areutilized to pump water and

    wastewater at treatmentplants as well as to deliverwater and removewastewater from residencesand businesses.

    Nutrient Trading atWastewater Treatment P lant

    The nutrient tradingprogram involves utilizing

    upstream management offarm fields to reducenutrient loadings to Dayton-area rivers and streams, inlieu of energy intensive andhigh cost plant removal.The program is a market-based approach forprotecting and improvingwater quality. Tradinginvolves two basic steps:

    1) Setting a goal for thetotal amount ofnutrients that enter

    waters in a watershed.2) Allowing sources to

    trade in ways thatmeet local andwatershed-wide waterquality goals.

    Varied Solar Power Applications

    At Kittyhawk Golf Center,ultrasonic devices are usedto reduce algae growth in

    ponds (recharge lagoons).These will be replaced withsolar aeration units.

    Solar-powered securitycameras in the WaterDepartment well fields save

    energy and allow wirelessdownloading of photos ontolaptop computers.Currently, there are sixsolar-powered cameras inoperation, with plans toinstall more.

    Water DepartmentCommunity Outreach

    In 2008, Daytons WaterDepartment began anawareness campaign topromote drinking City of

    Dayton tap water.

    Dayton pumps more than23 billion gallons of waterannually and is a regionalsupplier to more than400,000 Dayton andMontgomery Countyresidents.

    Drinking tap water savesthe energy necessary toproduce plastic waterbottles, which requires theequivalent of 17.6 millionbarrels of oil.

    Water from the tap costs

    less than one cent per day,while the average consumerof bottled water spendsmore than $400 per year.

    Childrens Water Festival

    The Childrens WaterFestival is an annual event

    promoting sustainability andlife-long green practices.

    The theme for the 2008festival was Go Green andthe 2009 festival wasthemed Take Back the

    Tap.

    1,000 or more fourthgrade students attend thefestival yearly.

    Sustainable P ractices Policy

    In 2007, the Dayton CityCommission approved the

    Sustainable Practices Policy,which sets direction andguiding principles for theCitys energy use anddevelopment of sustainablepractices.

    The policy followed MayorRhine McLins signing on tothe U.S. Conference ofMayors Climate ProtectionAgreement in 2005.

    City of DaytonOffice Guide

    In 2008, the Citys CoolEnergy Team developed an

    Office Guide for Cityemployees to provideguidelines for energy usereduction in City offices andoperations.

    The Office Guide was an

    outgrowth of the CitysSustainable Practices Policy.

    The City of Dayton joinedthe Energy Star network toassist in developing acarbon footprint andassessing buildingefficiencies and water andwastewater treatmentprocess efficiencies.

    Energy Star also offerseducational resources tooutreach to the public andbusiness communities.

    Energy Performance Contract

    The City of Dayton hasentered into a 10-yearperformance-based

    improvement andmanagement servicescontract with HoneywellInternational (beginning in2009).

    The program will allow for

    an average of $420,000 inenergy and operating costsavings annually.

    It includes professionalenergy managementservices in concert with

    lighting retrofits, buildingenvelope work, mechanicalsystems replacements,building controls, trafficlighting (LED) retrofits andmore.

    Geothermal Well Tech Town CTA

    The new (opening June2009) Creative TechnologyAccelerator Building at TechTown will be LEED-certifieddue in part to its geothermalheating and cooling system.

    Daytons Office of EconomicDevelopment and itsdevelopment partners intendto incorporate this and other

    renewable energy initiativesinto additional facilities atTech Town.

    With the presence of themassive Great Miami BuriedValley Aquifer, Daytons

    geothermal energy potentialis virtually unlimited.

    Conversion of Fleet toCompressed Natural Gas

    The City of Dayton is

    exploring conversion tocompressed natural gas

    (CNG) for portions of themunicipal fleet.

    CNG is a cleaner, moreefficient fuel and is lessexpensive than conventionalfuel. There is a particular

    emphasis on convertingdiesel fueled vehicles.

    Components of thisconversion program willinclude some dedicated CNGvehicles and some duel fuel

    vehicles as well as at leastone quick-fill fueling station.

    A 2,000-sq.-ft. GreenGridmodular green roof system

    is to be installed at DaytonsCity Hall, at 101 W. ThirdSt.

    To be planted primarilywith low-growing, hardysedum, the green roof

    filters and slows stormwater runoff and reduceselectric loading.

    The green roof and itsDAYTON inscription will bevisible from nearby high-

    rise buildings.
