Solid Waste Recycling
Dayton started curbsiderecycling collection in 1990.
In 2008, Dayton collected3,067 tons of recycledwaste.
Every ton of paper that isrecycled saves 17 trees.
The energy saved when werecycle one glass bottle is
enough to power aconventional light bulb forfour hours.
Recycling benefits the airand water by creating a netreduction in 10 majorcategories of air pollutantsand eight major categories
of water pollutants.

Used Oil for Heating
Since 2006, FleetManagement has beenreusing waste motor oil that
is drained from City vehiclesduring routinemaintenance.
Fleet has the capacity ofstoring approximately 2,500gallons of waste oil for
reuse in a water boilerheating system. Thissystem has been used as asecondary heating systemin order to reduce heatingcosts.
The system offers apotential annual savings of$10,000 to $20,000.

Alternative Fuels, Methane RecaptureBoilers and Electric Generating Facility
The Dayton WastewaterTreatment Plant generates
600,000 cubic feet ofmethane gas per day.
This gas is utilized as fuelfor boilers that provide bothheat for buildings and heatfor processes. In addition,
the plant has the ability togenerate 2,160 kw ofelectricity with themethane. The electricgenerating facility is usedfor peak electric loadings.

Nutrient Trading atWastewater Treatment P lant
The nutrient tradingprogram involves utilizing
upstream management offarm fields to reducenutrient loadings to Dayton-area rivers and streams, inlieu of energy intensive andhigh cost plant removal. The program is a market-based approach forprotecting and improvingwater quality. Tradinginvolves two basic steps:
1) Setting a goal for thetotal amount ofnutrients that enter
waters in a watershed.2) Allowing sources to
trade in ways thatmeet local andwatershed-wide waterquality goals.
