93% of Greenwood (GWD) students are reading at or above grade level.

Greenwood offers Science as a special to ensure all kindergarten students

receive hands on instruction every week.

All Green Primary School (GPS) third grade students (not exempt from the

Third Grade Reading Guarantee) passed either the spring reading OAA or the

Terra Nova alternative assessment.

97.5% of our GPS students scored at or above the reading guarantee cut

score of 392.

78.5% of our GPS students scored Accelerated or Advanced in reading; 93%

scored proficient or above in math and 66% scored Accelerated or

Advanced.

GPS students exceeded their goal of reading 2 million minutes over the course

of the school year.

Over 500 Green Middle School (GMS) students earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Green High School (GHS) was named a silver medalist, as one of the top high

schools in the United States by Newsweek and US News and World Report.

GHS offers an extensive Posts Secondary Program which includes dual

enrollment courses and distance learning experiences. GHS students earned

over 1,200 college credits, tuition-free through cost sharing efforts with our

university partners.

Student scores on Advance Placement (AP) tests at GHS continue to improve:

87% of AP students earned a 3 or higher, thus earning college credit. 60%

earned the grade of 5 or 4, the highest scores.

GHS offers 13 Advanced Placement courses, including AP Literature, AP

Language, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP United States History, AP

Government, AP Spanish, AP Art History, AP Environmental Science, AP

Statistics, AP Physics, and AP French.

At 2014 graduation, 83 students were recognized as “Distinguished Scholars,”

80 students were awarded the State of Ohio Honors diploma and 88 students

received the Award of Merit.

70 students received scholarships to continue their education.

32 students were inducted into the Academic Wall of Fame. Wall of Fame

inductees must have 3.8 accumulated GPA, receive 30 on ACT, 1350 on SAT

or be a National Merit Finalist.

216 sophomores taking the OGT, earned Accelerated or Advanced on 4 of

the 5 portions of the test.

Student from GMS and GHS each placed 2nd in their respective categories in

the statewide Laws of Life contest.

Instrumental music and choir is offered in grades 5 – 12.

Music, as a special, is offered Pre K – 3.

GHS vocal department includes Freshmen Choir, Women’s Choir, Select choir,

and Ensemble.

Musicals were performed at each building to sell out crowds, including;

Pirates!, The Little Mermaid, and Legally Blonde.

The Fine Arts Department is showcased at the community Celebration of

Education.

GHS Ensemble, a highly talented group of musicians and singers selected by

audition, performed at numerous nursing and senior homes and community

events.

GHS artists earned top honors in a mural contest sponsored by Diebold.

GMS band earned top honors in state competition, and received special

invitation as the only middle school band to perform and state conference.

In addition to 5th and 6th grade bands, Instrumental music offerings include:

7th and 8th grade bands, 8th grade jazz band, marching band, concert band,

pep band and high school jazz band. Approximately 400 students district

wide participate in instrumental music.

Over 34 pieces of art work from all disciplines, representing all grades was

submitted to the Summit County Art contest, earning several top awards and

honorable mentions.

A student created and directed multi-visual art video earned 2nd place in

county wide contest honoring the survivors of the Holocaust.

GreenTV provides three levels of video production, filming and editing

resulting in special district projects, morning announcements and “talk shows.”

The GHS art department features classes in drawing, painting, sculpting,

photography, and art history and computer art.

There are more than 20 clubs and organizations throughout the district, and

offered at each building, including Student Council, Chain Reaction, Girls on

the Run, Art Club, Key Club, National Honor Society, Fellowship Christian

Athletes, Academic Challenge, Yearbook, Ski Club, Lego Club and Tech

Club.

GWD celebrates student leadership and accomplishments through the use of

celebration buttons. Students earned over 10,000 buttons performing various

social and standard related activities.

During 17th Annual Senior Payback day, GHS students worked at various

locations within the city and the schools spreading landscape mulch,

playground mulch, planting flowers, weeding, picking up roadside litter and

park trash and washing vehicles.

Do Something Club, a nationally affiliated program, was created and

implemented at GHS. Student leaders began a recycling program with the

city, collected jeans, and were featured in a city publication.

110 cadets, including 19 graduating seniors, comprised the 2013-2014 Air

Force JROTC program. One student earned a full scholarship to Kent State

University. The VFW, Purple Hearts, AMVETS presented awards and certificate

of leadership to GHS cadets.

JROTC cadets logged over 200 hours of community service.

GMS class trips included Washington D.C. and Philadelphia.

GMS Chain Reaction Club placed post- it notes on every locker with words of

kindness, net with new students to the district, and passed out hot cocoa on

Warm Up to Others day.

Student leaders throughout the district participated in a leadership

conference sponsored by Summit County ESC.

10 GHS students were selected to participate in Developing Leaders, an

intense; year long program sponsored by ComDoc, Inc. 2013-2014

represented the 9th year of this program and sponsorship.

GMS coordinated numerous activities associated with our Olweus and No

Bullies No Victims Bullying Program including Summit County Courts and

motivational speakers promoting tolerance, acceptance and respect.

GAR Foundation awarded GIS $15,000 to fund student leadership initiatives

including: creation of leadership portfolios for each child and hosting

leadership speakers Hart Main (high school entrepreneur) and Mark Croghan,

USA Olympian and Green graduate.

Our Green Athletic Department has a dedicated athletic web site.

The Athletic Department includes two full-time athletic trainers.

GLSD is proud of the quantity and caliber our athletic teams. Green students

participate in 10 fall, 9 winter and 7 spring sports at the high school level, and

10 sports at the Middle School level. Green competes in the Suburban

league.

House Bill 264 energy conservation project has been implemented to upgrade

the district’s facilities, utilizing the future savings to pay for the improvements.

While the project is slated for completion in October of 2014, the district

moved forward to provide GHS with lighting upgrades, temperature control

system upgrades, and enhancements to the current kitchen exhaust system

at the end of the 2014 school year.

The district implemented a district wide energy conservation plan in FY13 that

will decrease utility costs by over $150,000.00 per year.

The Green Local School District lowered expenses by nearly $2 million dollars

to ensure a positive balance through FY17. This was accomplished even with

the district receiving less revenue than the previous year. Community levy

support and passage has been crucial to the fiscal stewardship of the district.

FISCAL STEWARDSHIP

Financial responsibility ensures that the majority of funding is spent

on classroom instruction.

Medical insurance needs are cost effective as a member of the Stark County

COG. The COG is one of the largest in the state and uses that leverage to

keep their administrative and premium costs lower than state average. These

premium costs are much lower than the district could achieve in a self insured

plan.

The district brought in $1,294,426.35 in federal grant money and $46,493.00 in

state grant money.

The district utilized GSA Federal Supply Schedule contracts under the

Cooperative Purchasing Program. This program allows the district to benefit

from pre-vetted vendors on a variety of products. It allows the district to

access specific Blanket Purchasing Agreements (BPAs) which delivered cost

savings and buying efficiencies while allowing consistency and quality control.

The district went to mass purchasing items, such as copy paper, saving the

district over $40,000.

Each district building has an active PTA, dedicated to the support of

teachers, administration and students. The district PTA Council oversees the

individual PTA’s. The PTA’s at each building provided grants, volunteers,

student activities and character based speakers.

The City of Green, the Environment Protection Agency and the district

partnered in securing a $100,000 grant to build a natural wetland, providing

both a living classroom for our students and enhanced flooding protection

for our residents.

The Green All Sports Booster Club and the Green Band Boosters work

together to fundraise for both organizations, raising thousands of dollars

each year.

As a district, staff and students collected can goods, new and gently used

clothing, gift and gas cards totaling close to $39,000.00 helping

approximately 150 Green families and 500 students in need or crisis.

The Annual GWD and GPS Bulldog Dash, a popular sanctioned 5K, raised

$40,000.00 to support educational initiatives in both buildings with support

from over 20 business and corporate sponsors.

PARENT & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Educational experiences are enhanced by partnerships between

the school district and community.

25% of our district’s families qualify for free or reduced lunches. There is a

growing disparity in income between lower and higher income families in our

schools. Blessings in a Backpack program for the GLSD id dedicated to

eradicating childhood hunger in as risk families over weekends during the

school year, supporting 150 children. 15 community partners and business

contribute to the success of Blessings in a Backpack.

Safety is a top priority for the district. A committee focused on school safety

and continuous improvement was established. Committee members

include: parents, city officials, first responders and law enforcement officials.

The committee assisted in the implementation of enhanced security

entrances and a district wide emergency communications system.

Green School Foundation provided leadership connections to GIS for the

Mega Marathon, challenging the students to read 2,600 pages, walk/run 26

miles, and complete 26 random acts of kindness. 150 students completed

the challenge.

The GLSD partnered with numerous youth organizations sharing facilities

including YMCA, Green youth sports leagues and camps.

GIS hosted a career conference with 25 guest speakers from the community,

including executives and entrepreneurs, sharing their career based

knowledge with our students.

Green High School’s National Honor Society hosted more than 150 senior

citizens from our community at their annual Senior to Senior dinner. Our

community seniors enjoyed being waited on, listening and dancing to music,

and celebrating the success of our high school seniors.

Hidden In Plain Sight, an interactive display about the warning signs found in

a teenager’s bedroom was presented to the community as collaboration

between the district, the Summit County Sheriff’s Department, and two

neighboring police departments.

GIS hosted their annual “Hero’s Day” where students had the opportunity to

honor adults/parents/community leaders/veterans that made a difference in

their lives.

The entire community took part in Celebration of Education a day of

promoting the district in the Arts, Athletics and Academics at Green High

School.

Green Schools Foundation (GSF) provided 16 scholarships and 20 individual

classroom grants.

The Parent Mentor Program offers assistance to parents, students, and staff

through monthly support meetings, consultations, agency contacts, a

resource library and an after school social skills program at GMS and GHS.

Case management services from Child Guidance and Family Services are

offered to students with emotional and behavioral needs.

More than 20 students from GHS worked in the community 10-20 hours each

week to fulfill IEP goals through a work-study program.

A biennial transition fair was offered to provide information to parents and

students about programs and services for post graduates with disabilities.

A GHS student was honored for receiving the top Outstanding Student Award

from Region 8.

Teachers continue to receive training in providing services to gifted students

through the ODE Javits Project.

Each building offers counseling services, school psychology services and

health services through a nurse or health aide.

Enrichment opportunities were offered to students through the following

programs: Ohio Math League, Mock Trial, Bridge Building Contest, Laws of Life

Essay Contest, Academic Challenge, Career Mentorship Class, Green Arts

Council and Engineering Awareness day.

The district serviced 29 limited English proficient students. An additional 174

students were tracked speaking another language in the home.

individualized instruction, enrichment and support.

A variety of digital learning opportunities and experiences are provided to students in

Green Local Schools. Students at all grade levels beginning in preschool interact

regularly and safely in technology-rich physical and digital learning spaces.

Upgrading infrastructures and services include: voiceover IP telephony (VoIP),

integrated email and voicemail services, enterprise wireless network, secure,

cloud based servers.

Data management and communication is implemented through a variety of

electronic and socially responsible services including:

o ProgressBook (electronic grade book)

o VersaTrans transportation routing software

o EZ Pya electronic payment system for school fees and food service

o Integrated student management software

o Secure online emergency medical authorization and annual

parent consent completion

o Centralized student enrollment and registration

o District Facebook page
