To All Our Respected Stakeholders
Incheon International Airport Corporation (Incheon Airport) was able to achieve substantive
results last year despite the difficult circumstances such as the continuing global economic
slowdown. Not only did Incheon Airport achieve the best ever performance in airport
management for the first time in airport history, Incheon Airport achieved 1st place for six
consecutive years in the global airport service evaluation category initiated by the Airport
Council International (ACI). This firmly established Incheon Airport as the World’s Best Airport.
However, as we have entered a period of low growth due to the overall economic
slowdown, the overall economic uncertainties are expected to continue. In addition, with
the strengthening of environmental regulations and increasing oil prices, corporate risk
factors continue to grow. At the same time, new opportunities are being created due to new
renewable energy and technological advancements, causing an overall shift in the industrial
paradigm. As a result, from a corporate management’s perspective, a new paradigm that
focuses on both economic growth through green growth and environmental preservation
is being highlighted.
Incheon Airport is converting a crisis into opportunity by actively focusing on issues related
to climate change and energy, helping to secure a competitive edge. By converting itself into
an eco-friendly low carbon structure, Incheon Airport is creating a structure focused on the
development of the airline industry and to solving environmental problems. Through this,
Incheon Airport will continue to achieve sustainable growth and enhance corporate value.
To this end, Incheon Airport has established its ‘2020 Green Growth Strategy’ and is actively
implementing diverse business initiatives. Incheon Airport is doing everything possible to
reduce energy consumption and minimize greenhouse gas emissions by officially adopting
its Energy Management Principles, creating a Renewable Energy Demonstration Complex,
enhancing energy efficiencies in buildings, and establishing an eco-friendly transportation
& distribution structure. In addition, Incheon Airport was the first in the world to distribute
lightweight cargo containers made from special materials, becoming an exemplary airport
in helping to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
By increasing energy self-reliance, Incheon Airport’s target is to create an ‘Energy Independent
Airport’ that is less affected by changes in energy prices such as oil prices. Through the
commitment and passion of all the employees at Incheon Airport, we will not only create
new opportunities and growth engines, we will also strive to establish ourselves as the ‘The
World Best Green Airport’ that is fully respected.
In addition to creating new opportunities and growth engines through the sacrifice and passion of all the employees at Incheon Airport, we are doing our best to establish ourselves as the ‘ The World Best Green Airport’ that is respected by all stakeholders.

2010 Energy Consumption StatusIn order to meet the reduction targets of the greenhouse gas and energy target agreement in addition to the substantial increase in airport operating performance such as growth in flights, passenger and cargo by 8%, 17% and 16% respectively, the construction of 5 new buildings (5,672m2) further caused the increase in energy consumption in 2010. Despite this, the total energy consumption in 2010 stood at 104,190toe, just a 1.6% increase over the previous year. Only 60% or 61,200toe was due to solely the construction, which was equivalent to only a 1% increase compared to the previous year.
As for electricity, which is the largest source of energy, the consumption ratio between Incheon International Airport Corporation and its tenants stood at 6:4. However, due to the start of construction of the airport’s medical center and meglev train, and the usage of new facilities by the tenants, the total electricity consumption by the tenants increased by 2.4%. As in the case of Incheon International Airport Corporation, despite the substantial operational performance, electricity consumption decreased by 0.04% due to the replacement of equipment with highly efficient equipment and the energy conservation efforts by its employees.

Energy Conservation & Efficiency
2010 Energy Conservation ResultsIn 2010, Incheon Airport achieved approximately 8,200 tons in greenhouse gas reductions and KRW2.6 billion in energy expense savings. These results were due to diverse energy conservation measures such as improving facilities and improving operations to achieve new energy reductions. Efforts to reduce energy consumption also played a key role.
Introduction of Highly Efficient LED LampsIncheon Airport replaced 10% of the existing airport lighting facilities with the highly efficient LED lamps in 2010. Since highly efficient LED lamps enable electric energy conservation and energy efficiency enhancement, Incheon Airport plans to invest up to KRW9.8 billion by 2015 to steadily replace more than 50% of existing lighting facilities with LED lamps.
Published a Climate Change & Energy Conservation Working Level Guidebook On April 2010, Incheon Airport published a ‘Climate Change & Energy Conservation Working Level Guidebook’ to enhance work efficiencies in related areas by systemizing climate change and energy related policies. This guidebook contains information on energy related regulations and major policies, and energy conservation & new renewable energy facilities and equipment by sector. By distributing the guidebook to the airport construction office and working level departments, establishing climate change countering measures and energy conservation methods are required during the 3 stage construction process or for newly constructing ancillary buildings.
Maintaining an Appropriate Temperature Level during Summer and WinterIn anticipation of a national power supply & demand crisis and to conserve energy, Incheon Airport maintains its internal office building and terminal temperature based on government encouraged levels all year round.

Environmental Management Structure
Oversight on Environment ManagementTo evaluate whether environmental management is being appropriately carried-out in construction sites, Incheon Airport initiates regular evaluation of the environmental management guidance. The environmental management supervision evaluation is implemented through three methods which include the internal inspection, seasonal·special inspection and environmental assessment. Decisions on whether to take action on items pointed out during the evaluation is carried-out during post management. In addition, suggestions and opinions related to the impact on the environment are actively reflected during evaluation through continuous communication. A training program on best cases and environmental regulations are simultaneously initiated. In 2010, evaluations were carried-out on various areas which include deicing, other environmental pollutions on A/S areas, waterways & water reservoirs, spring-time dust & waste material management conditions, and washouts.
ISO14001 Certification Status & ManagementIncheon Airport was the first airport in the world to receive the ISO14001 certification in the airport construction category in 1998 and airport operations category in 2002. In addition, from a post management perspective, Incheon Airport continuously improves its environment management system by evaluating the status annually through a public certification agency. To actively and systematically establish the environmental management system, Incheon Airport carries-out diverse internal activities. Internal environmental inspections are initiated regularly to confirm whether the environmental management system is appropriately being implemented. Also, by benchmarking outstanding overseas environment management cases and performance indices, the results are reflected when making improvements.
Environmental Impact SurveyIncheon Airport implements environmental impact surveys to minimize the impact on the environment as a result of construction & airport operations, and other business activities. To enhance professionalism and objectivity, Incheon Airport commissions an outside professional entity to carry-out the environmental impact survey. The survey is initiated mostly on ocean & detention reservoir water quality, odor, radio interference, soil pollution, etc. In addition, as a preventive measure, an environmental impact assessment is carried-out before construction is initiated. The results of the assessment are utilized to establish environmental protection measures to prevent pollution in areas surrounding the airport and destruction of the natural environment.

Environmental Monitoring & Responsive SystemAn environment monitoring center is utilized to continuously monitor whether there is an impact to the environment as a result of airport operations. The environmental inspection is comprised of around the clock monitoring of air and noise, and an environmental survey which includes air measurements in the traffic areas and environmental measurements in the populace areas. 24 hour monitoring facilities include 18 aircraft noise measurement centers and 3 air measurement centers in the surrounding areas of the airport. In 2010, since some of the equipment’s service life came to an end, Incheon Airport replaced 3 air-quality measuring stations and an environmental survey vehicle to further its effort in managing the airports’ environment.
The results of the air-quality and aircraft noise measurements are posted on Incheon Airport’s homepage for the public to view. Incheon Airport is also sharing with the results with the airlines and related organizations to request cooperation in reducing noise.
Emergency ResponseIncheon Airport focuses on strengthening its emergency responsive capabilities by establishing responsive systems in case of environmental disasters. To effectively respond to potential environmental pollutions, possible environmental pollutions are classified by type. Disaster counter procedures have been established based on the categorized possibilities. Depending on the size of the environmental disaster, the procedures differ. In case of minor incidents, the Situation Headquarters (Daytime: Environment Management Team, Nighttime: Situation Control Center) receives notification. Once received, the Situation Headquarters provides disaster prevention material support to the entity involved in the disaster. The situation comes to end once the disaster relief has been completed.

Construction Waste Material ManagementIncheon Airport appropriately treats construction materials in accordance to the ‘Construction Waste Recycling Promotion Act’ and ‘Wastes Controlled Act.’ Treatment plans for waste material produced from construction within the airport are reported to the competent authorities. The waste material is then either treated through an appropriate outside company or through the airport’s resource recovery facility. Incheon Airport requires the construction waste material to be separated when utilizing an outside company. Through regular evaluations, if there are areas that do not meet the standards required, actions are taken to that effect.
Water Quality & Topography ManagementIncheon Airport carries-out water quality and topography management on all its construction sites including the land development project between the free trade zones and the 2nd stage project to eliminate obstacles such as hills during construction. In 2010, as part of Incheon Airport’s effort to prevent soil runoffs on the construction sites, various measures have been taken such as the construction of 9 grit chambers, silt protectors, soil erosion prevention facilities, and diversion channels. In case of soil excavation, a soil runoff prevention facility and waste water treatment facility for each construction structure is installed to prevent water pollution. A regular inspection is carried-out through environmental inspection and internal environment investigation in the spring and summer.
Noise & Vibration ManagementContinuous improvement measures are taken to minimize the impact from noise produced during construction. Incheon Airport tries to minimize the use of dynamite during the nighttime and close to housing areas. If using dynamite is unavoidable, Incheon Airport will pre-notify the people living in the area. Incheon Airport will place greater effort to creating a pleasant living environment for people living around the airport and to establishing a healthy airport.
Air Quality ManagementTo minimize fugitive dust produced as a result of construction, Incheon Airport established and implements fugitive dust reduction plans. As part of the fugitive dust reduction plan in 2010, Incheon Airport operated sprinkler trucks, truck wheel and washing facilities. A temporary dust isolation wall was setup and covers were used to protect fugitive dust from dispersing from construction material. Incheon Airport plans to continue to manage and monitor the quality of the atmosphere in its construction sites as part of its effort to reduce fugitive dust.

Communication with Stakeholders
Efforts to Preserve the Natural EcologyTo establish a carbon neutral airport, Incheon Airport is currently developing a 470,40m2 ‘Global Peace Forest’ in the Incheon Airport new city (Chunggu Woonsu-dong). The ‘Global Peace Forest,’ which will be located within the city limits, will not only provide soundproofing and cover, it will also provide the local citizens with a place to rest.
In 2009, Incheon Airport completed the 1st stage development of the ‘Global Peace Forest’ covering an area of 240,000m2, and in 2010, completed the first stage complementary safety facilities through an investment of KRW1.3 billion. By 2016 the 3rd stage construction will be completed by planting diverse trees. By developing the ‘Global Peace Forest,’ Incheon Airport is contributing to the preservation of the ecology and creating a cooperative.
Certifications & AwardsIncheon Airport is continuously trying to create an eco-friendly Green Airport, receiving various certifications and awards in the process. In 2010, Incheon Airport received the Global Green Management Excellent award by being selected as the best climate change countering company in the Green Management Competition sponsored by both the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and the Ministry of Environment. In addition, Incheon Airport registered 2 patents which were the ‘Flight Path, Navigation, Noise and Weather Information Comprehensive Analysis Algorithm,’ and the ‘Environment Pollution Level Comparison Algorithm Utilizing Image Association.’
Countering International Environmental RegulationsIncheon Airport actively participated in various seminars sponsored by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to voluntarily face and counter international environmental regulations. Through these seminars, Incheon Airport is identifying issues and establishing countermeasures. To counter climate change, Incheon Airport not only has established a close cooperative network with domestic and government organizations such as the Energy Management Corporation, it has also established networks with overseas institutions.
Practical Case Studies to Improve the Environment VoluntarilyAs a corporation responsible for the development and management of the areas surrounding the airport, Incheon Airport is voluntarily making improvements to minimize the impact on the environment. As part of its effort, the representative voluntary environment improvement cases include the reduction of fuel through the introduction of the sludge drying equipment in the resource recovery facility, and energy reduction using waste heat in the incinerator. Incheon Airport will place greater emphasis on energy conservation and environment preservation by continuously introducing new equipment and making improvements to existing equipment.
