The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC)

The USGBC works to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, healthyplaces to work and live, and that are profitable. Comprised of a coalition of leaders fromevery sector of the building industry, the USGBC boasts over 6,400 member organizationsplus a network of over 80 regional chapters.

Their goal is to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built andoperated, advancing an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, andprosperous environment that improves the quality of life.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

LEED has created a Green Building Rating System™ that has become a nationalbenchmark for design, construction and operation of high-performance greenbuildings. This system provides the tools that building owners and operators need tohave an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance. Based ona whole-building approach, LEED promotes sustainability by recognizing performancein five key areas of environmental and human health – sustainable site development,water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.

Water EfficiencySection 3.1 & 3.2 Water Use Reduction

Objective:

Maximize water efficiency within buildings to reduce the burden on municipal water supply and wastewater systems by 20%-30%.

Tyco Fire & Building Products’ Solutions:

• Zonecheck® Flow Switch Testing System minimizes water demandsduring fire sprinkler testing by recirculating water within the pipe aroundthe flow switch to simulate the flow of one sprinkler operating. No wateris expelled from the system, saving a minimum of 100 gallons of waterper test (e.g. a 30-story building could save up to 30,000 gallons of watereach year).

• Tyco Fire & Building Products’ software suite designs optimized waterrequirements and eliminates water testing during system installation.

• Mist nozzles and fire protection systems dramatically reduce waterrequirements for certain applications.

• Grooved products and valves are designed to help eliminate leakage and improve water efficiency.

• Blazemaster™ CPVC products greatly reduce the friction loss ofwater flows in the sprinkler system design, resulting in reduced overallwater-flow requirements.

Sustainable SitesSection 6.1 & 6.2 Storm Design

Objective:

Limit disruption of natural water hydrology by reducing impervious cover, increasing on-site infiltration, reducing or eliminating pollution from storm water runoff andeliminating contaminants. Limit disruption and pollution of natural water flows bymanaging storm water runoff.

• Grooved products are designed to help eliminate leakage and prevent contamination.

• The use of Grinnell® flexible couplings and fittings helps prevent leakage and breakage during a seismic event.

• Tyco Fire & Building Products’ Quell Fire Sprinkler System eliminates the need for Propylene Glycol and Glycerin antifreezes in cold storage applications.

• Grinnell® grooved products reduce on-site contaminants such as cutting oils during piping installation.

Increase demand for building products thatincorporate recycled content materials, therebyreducing impacts resulting from extraction andprocessing of virgin materials.

Section 4 Enhanced Refrigerant Management

Objective:

Reduce ozone depletion and support earlycompliance with the Montréal Protocol while minimizing direct contributions to global warming.

Tyco Fire & Building Products’ Solutions:

• Biodegradable discharge materials (water & foam/water) eliminate the use of gaseous agents in fire protection.

• Water based paints used on Grinnell®

grooved fittings use 20%-28% fewer solvents than oil-based paints whichcontribute to SMOG.

• With multiple manufacturing facilities andwarehouse locations within the UnitedStates, fuel emissions are reduced in moving product to job sites.

Indoor Environmental QualitySection 3.1 Construction IAQ Management Plan: During Construction

Objective:

Reduce indoor air quality problems resulting from theconstruction/renovation process in order to help sustain the comfort and well-being of construction workers and building occupants.

Tyco Fire & Building Products’ Solution:

• Our Grinnell® grooved product eliminates welding (steel) and soldering (copper) during installation, reducing toxic fumes, thereby protecting the air quality for contractors and installers.
