KIRSTIN JOHNSONKirstin has contributed to chess at GHS for the last four years. He has played through the ranks from Grade 8 to 11. In Grade 8, his team won gold in the Johannesburg North Junior Chess league. In 2014, he was selected to represent the First Team for the first time and did so with distinction. He is an amazing ambassador of the game, the team and Greenside High School. He likes sharing ideas and tactics about the game. His juniors feel comfortable playing against him although the result for them is, almost always, defeat.Kirstin picks the game up easily and quickly, better than the people he normally plays against. His interpretation of the game is first class. He has proved to be an amazing mental athlete in one of the most difficult games to play. This term, he, like all his team mates, played very well against all the opponents. It is with pleasure that we award Kirstin Johnson Senior Full Colours for Chess. MOHAMMED SABIMohammed started playing chess in Grade 8. He played for the juniors in the first term, where he did fairly well. In the second term, he was co-opted as a reserve player for the senior team in the event that the main players were committed with other duties on match day. Mohammed found himself playing more regularly than he, and the coaches, had hoped for. His game gradually started to improve. Mohammed has been playing well for the school chess teams for the past four years. He has won medals for himself and the chess teams he has played for. Mohammed participates in regional tournaments and, this year, he won the Northriding Chess Tournament. His personal statistics this year are phenomenal. In summary, Mohammed has represented the school with dignity, modesty and wisdom, hence it is our pleasure to award Mohammed Sabi Senior Full Colors for Chess.

PRATISH NATVERLALThis is Pratish’s fifth year playing for GHS Chess team. He played through the ranks from Grade 8 to 12. In Grade 9, his team won silver in the Johannesburg North Junior Chess league. He started playing for the first team in 2015.Pratish’s attitude towards chess is one of humility, respect and maturity - something that is not often seen in school sports. He freely helped appointed chess captains in their leadership roles throughout his years in Greenside High School. He is well respected by his chess peers.Pratish also competes in the regional chess tournaments where he often out-performs some rated players. He did extremely well again this season, winning most of his games. It is for all these reasons that we award Pratish Natverlal Senior Full Colours for Chess.
Re-Award of Senior Full Colours for Chess RODERICK DAVIES
Roderick has played chess for Greenside for 5 years now. He has been playing for the first team since Grade 8. His game has consistently improved. In Grade 9, his team won gold in the Johannesburg North Junior Chess League.Roderick is a good student of the game. He aims to learn something from each game he plays. He is always willing to help and share chess knowledge with his colleagues and opposition. He has an admirable attitude. Roderick believes that the price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that, whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand. Attitudes are contagious. As Captain, for the second year running, Roderick has positively influenced everyone around him. He has shown brilliance as a leader and chess player during the years. This year was not different. We take pleasure in re-awarding Roderick Davies Senior Full Colors for Chess.
ARUSHIN PADAYACHEE The School Chess Team is privileged to have Arushin in their ranks. Arushin has had a national chess rating for the past six years. In 2012, he qualified for, and participated in the South African Junior Chess Championships held in Cape Town where he competed in the U14 age group. He again participated in the same tournament held in Durban in 2013 and in 2014, in Kimberly. Arushin made the provincial U16 team that competed nationally in Cape Town in January 2016. He has participated in many provincial championships. Despite all his achievements in participation and performance, he remains humble and respectful to his team mates and coaches. He is easy to coach and works hard to improve himself and the team. Arushin has played for the senior team since Grade 8 and he is probably the most talented and most decorated chess player to represent Greenside High School. He outshone his opponents again this year. It is our pleasure to re-award Arushin Padayachee Senior Full Colors for Chess. Above: Arushin Padayachee with the Best
Chess Player of 2017.

MEGAN GELDARTMegan has become a very well-rounded defender in the team, stopping and clearing numerous close calls during many games. Megan has grown so much as a hockey player and has become a well-respected player in the team. She was made Captain this season, and has led the team without fear. She pulled the team together when they were down and motivated them to do better at every practice and every game.
CAITLIN HIEBNERCaitlin is quick on her feet and is always looking to make scoring opportunities for her team by running into gaps in the opposition’s defence, putting them on the back foot. Caitlin has come a long way as a hockey player - she has learnt a lot about the game and how to read the game, which not only benefits her but her team as well. She is well-respected by her team mates and was made Vice-Captain of the team this year.
Both Megan and Caitlin have been playing for the first team for the past three years, building their skills, season after season.

JARED DE VRIESJared has been a servant of Greenside Rugby since he arrived at the school. His dedication to, and love for, the sport are evident and he is a real leader among the boys. He made the Lions Development side in his junior years and has kept up his strong performances all the way until his matric year. He is a strong physical presence on the field and is most potent on defence where he makes bone-crunching tackles that disrupt the opposition's play. Many tries have been saved as a result of his efforts and he has been a key member of the first team for the past two years. He has been the life and soul of Greenside Rugby for many years and is worthy of his re-award of full colours.
SABELO MWEZASabelo has played first team rugby since his grade 9 year and has captained the side for the past three seasons. He has represented the Lions Development side on multiple occasions which has given him the opportunity to prove his talent. He has been a dominant force in the team and the kind of player that other teams dread facing. He is a fierce defender and is even stronger with the ball in hand. Greenside will miss Sabelo's leadership, his tries and his memorable bounces. He is worthy of being re-awarded Senior Full Colours.

trophy for best hockey team of 2017.
A very worthy mention of Shuaid Booley and Stephen Van Niekerk also needs to be made. The two are awarded with the Cliff Patrick Simaan Trophy for Merit.
WELL DONE, GREENSIDERS!
