Staff
Greenwood College has amazing, resilient and supportive staff who adapt to the needs
and pressures of the college without complaint or resistance. I took five weeks leave at the
beginning of this term and Mr Pohara moved into the Principal’s chair. In doing so, it
created a domino effect with several other senior positions within the college. So we had
Mr Pohara, Mr Williams, Ms Armstrong, Mr Filidei and Ms Arns all doing back filling jobs
about the college. They all performed very well and I was delighted to come back to a
smoothly running school. Thank you to all of those staff.
Future Assessments
Term 2, as always, is disappearing fast with the students under pressure in Years 10, 11 and
12 to perform in exams and assessments. This is a critical term, in terms of establishing
successes in their respective pathways and I do encourage parents to keep an eye on the
stress levels of the students as well as a reasonable commitment to their studies. I am
progressively interviewing the Year 12 students at the moment to monitor and keep a close
eye on the student engagement.
Aviation
An aviation firm is about to make a donation of a helicopter simulator to the college. It will be the first of its kind to be
located in a school in Australia. We have been chosen due to the fact that we offer both fixed wing and helicopter
courses at the college and this is a wonderful opportunity for the students who are in the Aviation course. Hopefully
you will see this receiving some promotion through local media outlets.
Debating Team
We have branched into “debating” at a competitive level at the college this year. A Year 9 team have swept all
before them by winning the first appearances they have had. Wow! They are being able mentored by a Year 11
student, Marcel Masque Salgado and teachers Ms Amor-Robertson and Ms Alison McDonald. Well done team. The
students in the winning team are: Ann Cao, Konrd Dumpleton, Cyrine Almaodovar, Asmaa Hameed and Jacqueline
Walters.
Parent Interviews
Parents, please put in your diaries the date of 28 June for the reporting afternoon. Come and meet the staff and
hopefully gain more insight on how your son or daughter are getting on at the college. We do need to work as a team
to ensure the best possible outcomes for the students. With that thought in mind, can I also highlight that we have a
lovely, wonderful and active Parents and Citizens Group that meet at the college on the first Tuesday of every month.
Please feel free to come and join them and receive more detailed up-dates on activities going on around the college.
Progressive College
We are currently planning for a college review that will be undertaken by the Department of Education later in Term 3.
This is providing us with the stimulus to focus clearly on areas of progress in the college but also areas that we may
need to develop further so as to provide the best educational institution we can provide. This all means progress for
the college and I look forward to future achievements.
All the best for all our college families with the up and coming holidays and I look forward to meeting you should you
visit the college at some stage soon.

Upper School News
Senior School Exams
Semester 1 exams for Year 11 and 12 students were held from 26 May through to Friday 2 June.
Staff have been most impressed with the attitude displayed by students towards their exams
and we hope they are rewarded with sound grades in their Semester 1 reports. All senior school
reports are reviewed with students who are in danger of not achieving their WACE being
counselled and in some instances, there will be case conferences with parents. The Principal,
Mr Johnston will be interviewing Year 12 ATAR students to discuss university entrance scores.
Year 11 Transition to 2018
During week 8 of this term, Year 11 students have received a transition package to assist with
courses for 2018. These packages are designed for students, parents and staff to reflect on
student’s Semester 1 achievements and plan for the following year.
Year 10 Counselling for Subject Selection 2018
Parents are reminded of the compulsory interview that must be completed for subject selection in 2018.
Greenwood College is ensuring students and parents are making informed decisions about subject selection by
having these interviews. Most parents make their interview times and we encourage you to do so at a time that
best suits you by contacting the school on 9243 9200. If you have not made an appointment time by the end of
term on Friday 30 June, the school will be organising a time for you. It is vitally important that parents /guardians are
able to attend these meetings as changes to subject selections for students at a later date may not be possible.
Year 9 Students Elective Selections for 2018
All students will receive their selection sheet and booklet shortly. Please note that these sheets have to be handed in
to the front office by Wednesday 28 June. Parents and students need to know that while all effort is made to give
students their first three selections, timetable constraints mean that this is not always the case. These are yearlong
courses students are committed to.
Year 12 Semester 2 and WACE Exams
Students and parents are to be advised of the following timeline for exams:
Semester 2 Exams
Mon 2/10/17 – Fri 6/10/17
Second Week of School Holidays

Student Services
Year 11 Formal
Social events are so well supported by our students. I used to think once upon a time that if
50% of a year group committed to going to a social event then that was quite good. Over
the years, we now regularly see close to 70% of students attend an event or camp. Truly
outstanding.
The Year 11s held their Formal on Friday June 9 at the Hillarys Yacht Club. It is a Formal after all
so all the students (and staff) made a big effort to get dressed up for the evening and they
had a sensational time. The students looked brilliant and their behaviour was perfect and
more importantly they were there to have fun and that’s what they did. Well done year 11s.
Thanks must go to Mr Woodard for organising a memorable evening. Also I would like to
acknowledge the following staff for giving up their time to ensure the evening was a success;
Ms Arns, Mr Filidei, Mrs Langford, Ms Tulip, Mr Johnston, Mr Frisina, Mr Walczak, Mrs Palmer, Mrs
Cockman, Ms Macoboy, Mr Utting, Mrs Griffin and Mrs Earle.
Awareness
Greenwood College is one of many participating schools involved in promoting awareness with depression, anxiety,
bullying, youth suicide and other mental health related issues. Greenwood College has supported Zero2hero for
several years now and will continue to do so on Friday 23 June. The fun part of the day will be seeing the very high
number of students and staff wearing free/fancy dress. Greenwood College raised close to $1000 in 2016 and the plan
is to beat that this year.
Attendance Heroes
Drum roll …………………………..The Semester 1 Attendance Competition was won by the Year 7s with an attendance
percentage of 93.2% which was slightly better than the Year 8s with 91.8%. That is a seriously commendable result for
the Year 7s and Ms Arns. Third place was taken by the Year 11s with 90.7% followed by the 9s on 90.6%, 10s on 90.2%
and finally the 12s on 88.8%. Well done to the students and to the respective Year Coordinators, perhaps there will be
a sausage sizzle as a reward!
Bullyzero and Online Behaviour
Student Services continues to address and intervene with issues involving students who behave
inappropriately online. The number of students behaving in this manner is small but very
damaging. It is a frustrating situation that leads to hurt, distress, humiliation, angst and depression.
For the most part, this type of behaviour occurs off school grounds and outside of school hours.
Student Services is compelled to intervene when the involved students attend this school. What
we know is that students in the younger year groups are highly represented in the number of
online incidents. Greenwood College is determined to lead with best practice strategies to
address “e” behaviours.
On Wednesday 7 June, Oscar Yildiz from Bullyzero (a not for profit organisation based in Victoria www.bzaf.org.au)
spoke to students from Years 7 to 10. Oscar’s presentations were confronting with a definite message; the law has
caught up with people who behave offensively or criminally online. The online world is such a vast entity with the
good, the bad and the very, very ugly. Again it is not the technology that causes the angst. It is the person using it.
Students were encouraged to follow the B.I.R.D BLOCK IGNORE REPORT DELETE
Personal property at school
Theft is very uncommon at Greenwood College but recently there have been a few reports of personal items being
stolen. We have a significant more number of phones handed into the front office (by honest students) that have
been misplaced rather than reported as stolen however students do need to take responsibility for bringing valuables
to school. Please check our lost property for unclaimed phones, watches, wallets, clothing etc.
Reporting Night
Semester 1 Parent Reporting Night is on Wednesday 28 June from 4pm—7pm. Students will receive their reports on
Monday 19 June and enclosed will be relevant information in regard to online interview bookings with teachers. We
have also provided a copy of your child’s timetable to assist with subject codes when entering bookings. Check our
Facebook page, this newsletter and website for more information.
Change of Hats
This Term I have been fortunate to gain experience in the role of Upper School and Lower School Deputy Principal
positions. I’ve enjoyed learning a whole new skillset and working for the school in a different capacity. I will be
returning to Student Services for Term 3, a role I thoroughly enjoy and have been doing for 17 years now. Mr Filidei and
Ms Arns have both run Student Services seamlessly for this term and I thank the both of them very much for all their
hard work.
Enjoy the holidays.

Year 10 Upper School Selection for 2018
The subject selection timeline is progressing well. Year 10 students should have completed
their “Teacher Recommendation” sheets and handed them in to their HASS teachers. If you
have any concerns with the teacher recommendations please feel free to contact your son/
daughter’s individual teachers or speak to them at the School Parent Reporting Evening on
the last week of term Wednesday 28 June.
Week 9 is a busy week. You should be receiving your son/daughters Semester 1 Report and
the Teacher Recommendation sheet.
Individual Counselling Interviews
It has always been Greenwood College policy for all parent /guardians of Year 10 students to
have an individual counselling session to make sure that both parents and students fully
understand the pathways that your son/daughter is undertaking for Years 11 and possibly
Year 12. Choosing the wrong subjects can be very stressful.
Bookings for the staff counsellors can be made at the Year 10 Parent Night (Tuesday 20 June). If you are unable to
make the parent night an interview time will be sent to you. If this is not possible you are asked to contact the front
administration office to organise a suitable time. Week 3 of Term 3 parent interviews have been organised.
If you have any queries regarding Upper School subject selection please feel free to contact me.

The exams are over and we have a couple of weeks left till midyear break. The Music
camp is happening this week for 3 nights. Good luck to all the students attending the
camp and performing at various primary schools.
Champions for Change
Our Champions for Change students have been busy this term. They were
invited by State Wide Services to participate in an event called “Safe and
Friendly School” student voice. Greenwood College was one of two school
invited to give their input on “How to make a school friendly”. The
information gathered will be composed into a new framework that schools
will use to guide practice and standards.
They also enjoyed a full day at Ern Halliday (see photos) participating in the
ROCK and WATER Leadership Program. Rock and Water focuses on the
development of emotional intelligence and the capacity to connect with
others. The leadership program helps to develop qualities of leadership,
personal confidence and self-respect in students. Fun interactive activities
are used as a platform to discuss anti-bullying, alternatives to aggressive
verbal and physical actions, awareness to body language, mindfulness and
boundary awareness.
DRUMBEAT
I am very excited to announce that
DRUMBEAT is here at Greenwood College.
This program uses music through hand
drumming to help improve personal and social confidence and develop social
skills. I would like to thank the P&C for purchasing seven drums, which will enable
small groups of students to participate in this fun and engaging program. I will be
starting DRUMBEAT in Term 3.

Netball
As part of the Netball program, Greenwood entered five teams in the WA School Sport, Champion Schools Netball
Competition on Thursday 25 May. Having trained hard all semester for the event, the girls acquitted themselves well,
representing Greenwood with dedication, commitment and pride. On the day all the teams did very well,
competing strongly against and also beating specialist netball schools.
A special mention must go to the Year 9/10 team and the Upper School girls who have progressed through to the
next round. Both teams will now play another game scheduled later in the term.
Well done girls!

Year 8—Jacque Walters and Jackson Walker
Year 7—Michelle Carrie and Angus Fraser The end of Term 2 is coming up and we’re all relieved to be able to have a break and be able
to come back into the second semester ready for anything! Recently we had a visit from some
fantastic speakers from Elevate Education who taught us some study skills to improve our
scores in tests. We learnt about dynamic reading, formatting our notes, trigger words and mind
maps. Overall it was an educational experience and inspired us to think more about our
preparation for tests and exams. In Week 8, Music students from Years 7-12 will be heading off on a four day Music
Camp. Shortly they’ll perform at two primary schools before heading off to Woodman Point where they’ll stay for the
weekend while practicing and participating in other activities. On the Monday, we’ll perform at two other primary
schools before heading back to school. I hope everyone has a fantastic time and performs amazingly at those
schools.
Also this term, the Year 7 and 8 Dance students had an excursion to His Majesty’s Theatre to see Don Quixote
performed by the WA Ballet Company. It was a beautiful performance and all the students found it a rewarding
experience. Coming up later this term, we have our Zero to Hero Day, where we’ll have an assembly and a fun-
packed day of activities to raise awareness about suicide prevention. As the term draws to a close, we’re all nervous
about the dreaded “Semester 1 Reports”. This is nothing to worry about as I’m sure everyone has done a fantastic job
this semester and even if they haven’t, I’m sure everyone will pick themselves back up and try even harder next term.
For this edition’s Staff Profile we visited the school library to have a chat to Mrs Kington (Head Librarian/Teacher):
Name: Mrs Barbara Kington
Hobbies: Reading, walking and travelling
Likes: Sitting on the beach. Eating fish and chips while watching the sun
set
Dislikes: Bullies
Role in the school: Teacher Librarian and HASS teacher
Advice for year 7s: Enjoy every day. Don’t be frightened to experience new
things.
Hey Year 8s! It’s us, Jacque and Jackson again; *whew* this semester has gone fast! There
have been lots of exciting events this term and these are just some of them.
On Wednesday 17 May we had our annual Lightning Carnival. The Lightning Carnival was
great fun! Everyone picked their favourite sport to play (the choices were Football, Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball
and Netball) and we trained for weeks, before travelling to the venues and competing against other schools. We
have had some exciting care-group challenges this term that were organised by Ms Page, the Year 8
Representatives and yours truly. The intention behind the weekly challenges was to promote teamwork throughout
each care-group and recognise those students who have been doing outstanding work throughout the term. The
winners of the mid-term prizes were: Campbell Henderson, Alfie Cranmer and Gemma Arnold. Well done!
Guess what? Yes you guessed it! The second round of immunisations have been and gone (yay!). After the
immunisations, there were a lot of sore arms and many excuses as to why classwork couldn’t be completed.
The Pathway 3 students all attended an Elevate Study Seminar which is all about time management and how to get
your homework/assignments ready on time as well as actually having a life at the same time. It was really useful to
learn some of these essential skills!
Remember, we are now in Winter, so that means we have to keep our bodies healthy. Some tips on staying healthy
are: resting up and looking after yourself, dressing warm and staying home when you’re sick, but also make sure if
you do stay home that you get your parents or caregivers to ring up the office and give a reason to why you were
away.
Also, remember that reports are coming out before the end of the term. Although the grade is an indication of your
achievement in that subject, the most important question is: Have you given your best and tried your hardest?
Giving your best effort is all your teachers and your parents really want you to do. Don’t forget the Parent/Teacher
Reporting night is coming up soon. Next semester some students will be moving to a new elective; however, the
specialist subjects like Dance, Aviation, Music and Volleyball students will not be changing.
This semester has been a really busy one. Well done to everyone on working so hard and we are sure you are all
looking forward to a well-earned, relaxing, fun filled school break.
Greenwood College June 2017 Page 11
Year 10— Simone Priestley and Lewis Mason
Year 11— Brooke O’Connor & Ethan De Beer
Year 9—Anne Mansell and Mark Stephenson
Hello and we hope everyone is going well this semester. It has been a really busy term
but hold on it’s nearly over!
The Annual Music Camp will commence 16—19 June but since we're writing this before
it has happened, we cannot write how it went. But The Concert Band, Vocal Ensemble,
and the Rock Bands are sounding very good and promises to put on a good show. Good luck to all the students
attending and we hope you have a great time.
The School Sport WA Volleyball Champion School Competition is taking place on 23 June. The Gladiators have
made a name for themselves before and are hungry for wins next week! Good luck to everyone going and go
Gladiators!
The Year 9s had their Lightning Carnival on 6 June and everybody had a great time on the day. We had teams for
Basketball, Soccer, Football, and Netball. They all performed great and had no serious injuries. From Anne and I, we
would both like to say a big congratulations to everybody for trying their best and having fun on the day!
Thanks for reading. Have a great day!
So here we are again wrapping up another exciting term. Year 10s have had an
important and busy term! We have had exams, and subject selections. There’s still a
little bit more to go, with the Lightning Carnival coming up soon and social dancing
starting straight after lighting duties are finished!
The exams took place in Week 5 for all of our core subjects. As much as it was
frustrating, we all perked up after they were all over and done with. The exam results will determine whether we are
recommended for ATAR and general courses for Year 11 and 12. We’ve also had our career talks for subject selections
in Years 11 and 12. Even though we all had a difficult time choosing our subjects, we’re sure everyone is happy with
their choices, but even if you’re not, it’s not the final selection so there is a high chance of changing your class if you’re
unhappy :)
On Monday 10 June we had our Lightning Carnival. We are all excited and ready to work hard and win! Lastly on our
timetable for this term is the recently voted in, dinner dance. It will take place on 11 August with details being released
shortly. To prepare for this, we have social dancing to commence after the Lightning Carnival, taking over both our
sport and health periods for a couple of weeks. Also, a few of us are touring on the Music camp run by Mr Salmon. On
the way to the camp, we perform at a few primary schools, then chill at the venue and rehearse for the weekend,
and on the journey back home, we perform at the last few primary schools.
Term 2 was a lot harder than we expected, but we made it in the end. We hope you all have had an enjoyable term
and we will see you next term!
The Year 11 Formal Dinner Dance was a lot of fun this year. Hillary’s Yacht Club was a
great location overall. The food was great and the dancing was the main attraction of
the night. Even Mr Woodard and a number of teachers couldn’t help but dance the
night away.
The night was warm for this time of year and the balcony at the yacht club was really
enjoyed to cool off from all the dancing or just a nice spot to relax and enjoy the view over
the harbour (see photos below).
There was laughter all around and this was primarily due to the whole year group coming together as one. It’s a night
that we won’t forget as leaving all that stress from school on the dance floor, was truly the best experience.
It is hard to believe that half of our year (Semester
1) has gone and that we have either had exams to
sit or a number of assessments to complete and
finalise in that time.
Hopefully everyone is working towards their goals
and making the most of this year.

Friendship Garden Project
A dedicated bunch of students form the Friendship Group led by Ms Tulip and Mr Luke Baker from The Salvation
Army thought it would be a lovely idea to fill the empty raised garden beds with an array of bright flower and
mulch. The results are amazing. It’s uplifting, pretty, tranquil and now a joy to walk through to the oval. What was
once a disused pathway is now enjoyed by teachers and students alike. Well done!
We are almost at the end of Semester 1 and student reports will be out in less than a
week. EST’s and examinations are finally over and we have received our results.
Hopefully you are all happy with your outcomes. There is a strong correlation between
the efforts that you put in and the results that you receive. If you want to receive strong
results, you need to put in the effort. There is still time to improve even though there is only 12 school weeks let for our
school career.
Mr Johnston and Mrs Hollis will be meeting with the ATAR students on Wednesday of Week 9 to go through predicted
ATAR scores. Mrs Hollis is also having a close look at whether students are on track to graduate. If you have
outstanding assignments, make sure you get them completed and handed in so they can contribute to your marks.
On 25 May some of the Year 12 girls participated in an Interschool Netball Carnival. Thank you to everyone who
showed up and to the teachers than helped out. A big thank you to Miss Logan for organising the day. Although we
only had a few training sessions, the Year 11 & 12 team managed to make it to the next round of competition.
With only 12 school weeks left, we are going to get very busy, very fast. A number of students have started to plan the
end of year Leavers Assembly. We have been meeting on Tuesday’s at lunchtime in M3. If you would like to
contribute, please come along to the meetings, or speak to Taylor or Jacob. Mrs Hollis will organise a time for students
to meet that would like to be involved in the Year 12 section of the Yearbook. This book will be a lasting memory of
our time at Greenwood College so let’s make it special. Any photos of our time in at Greenwood would be great.
The teachers are working hard to help as many students as possible achieve their goals. There are after school
classes, extra help in X-files, and school based revision programs. It is now up to us to make sure we achieve the best
that we can. We need to hand in work on time, study for assessments, and keep getting help from teachers to help
improve our marks.
Keep the focus….

New Simulator
As announced in a previous newsletter, CHC
helicopters are due to deliver the donated Bell-
412 GeoSim flight simulator as we go to print. A
formal handover-takeover of the device will
take place during the Zero2Hero assembly,
Friday 23 June 2017.
Thank-you P&C
The College P&C have kindly funded 3 aviation headsets. These attenuate most of the ambient noise in the cockpit.
Each headset is also equipped with an electric microphone, facilitating easier communication over the in-flight
intercom system between passengers and crew.
If you are flying during the July holidays, I wish you and your family travels. Please take the time to read the
emergency briefing card in the seat pocket in front of you. I sincerely hope you never need it. However it is usually
too late during an emergency to “take-in” the vital information should circumstances require emergency action.
Safe flying.

Cancer Council Morning Tea
On Thursday 25 May, Greenwood College staff and students enjoyed
an amazing morning tea to raise funds for this cause close to
everyone’s heart. Staff all rallied around this fabulous cause and
showcased their baking skills along with a large amount of snacks
provided by the Home Economics students and the Certificate ll
Hospitality students and Home Economics staff.
As an added extra to our morning tea, the
Admin ladies ran a cupcake stall and added
their takings to the donations, collecting a
grand total of $702.70 which was donated to
the Cancer Council.
Cancer in Australia facts:
1 in 2 Australian men and women will be
diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85
Cancer is the leading cause of death in
Australia—more than 44,000 people died
from cancer in 2014.
68% of people diagnosed with cancer in
Australia are still alive five years after a cancer
diagnosis.
The most common cancers in Australia (ex. non
-melanoma skin cancer) are prostate, breast,
colorectal (bowel), melanoma and lung
cancer.
Cancer costs more than $4.5 billion in direct health system costs.
In 2006-2011, $1.77 billion in funding was provided for cancer research in Australia.
So every dollar helps to bring awareness, diagnosis, treatment and research in trying to beat this horrible disease.
Thank you to everyone involved who created an enjoyable morning tea for teachers/admin staff and
students.

Boys Soccer
The 2017 Soccer Season is well and truly in full swing. Fielding 3 teams this season Greenwood College is well and
truly mixing it with the best in the state in SSWA schools soccer competition.
The intermediate boys (U/16) have had a tough initiation into the ranks of the competition. Playing against seasoned
opposition such as Mercy College, Ashdale Secondary and Duncraig SHS the boys were playing against arguably
two of the best teams in the competition. Despite losing all their games, the team improved every single week and
this was reflected in the score line and in the simple question that one of the boys asked me…’sir, can we play in this
competition again next year?’ Honourable mentions for this years campaign must go to Sasha Babic for his efforts as
goal keeper, Atanas Atanasov for his playmaking in the midfield as well as Antonio Gatani, Regis Gatambiye and
Mauro Da Costa Jnr. for their respective goal scoring abilities.
Over in the Girls division, the girls are still chasing their first win. They showed promise in their two losses against
Duncraig and Carine SHS with fantastic performances from Rebecca and Emily Burnside, Raquyah Hameed, Elise
Andreou and Grace O’Halloran. The girls still have fixtures against Quinns Baptist and Woodvale ‘B’ before the end
of the term.
The Senior Boys campaign started of well with a resounding 3-1 win over Girrawheen SHS with two goals scored by
Toni Kupari and Othniel Mbafumoja. In round two they came up against last years finalists Mercy College ‘A’ and
played a good game but that wasn’t enough to prevent them going down 5-2. Their most recent game kept their
finals hopes alive with a 1-0 win over our cross town rivals Balga SHS.
We have never been Balga at home or away and this was a well
deserved win. The boys travel to Ballajura College next week and
Mercy ‘C’ the week after to finish their group games.
My thanks to Dale Gannaway and Meg Cook for coaching their
respective teams and giving up their time to coach and take the
students to games as
well as senior boys
Ibrahim Sow and Kasper
Jacobsen for giving up
their time to run the
sideline at home games.

day with friends and an exciting learning experience. The year 10’s had their exams two weeks ago. Everyone worked
extremely hard and we hope that you got the marks you wanted. The Year 11’s and 12’s just finished their exam period.
Whilst it was very stressful they worked hard and pushed through. The Year 8’s and 9’s had their Lightning Carnival which
they worked hard for and did very well in. Stirling has done very well and has earned a number of house points. The top

Debate Round 4 against Duncraig SHS – Tuesday 30 May – AFFIRMATIVE – That primary and high schools should
prioritise the teaching of the local Indigenous language over the teaching of foreign languages. We won the above
debate by four points, our widest margin yet. The team of Asmaa Hameed, Cyrine Almodovar and Ann Cao
performed extremely well. We clinched the debate with our excellent rebuttal skills. We even had Mr Pohara in the
crowd, cheering the team on.
Debate Round 5 against St. Stephens, Duncraig - Tuesday 13 June – AFFIRMATIVE – That we should ban children under
the age of 18 from participating in talent/reality TV shows (e.g. Junior Masterchef, X-Factor, Australia’s Got Talent). Our
students worked hard preparing research, arguments and rebuttal. The speakers were Konrad Dumpleton, Jacque
Walters and Ann Cao. We can advise that yet again, we won yet another debate! This takes their winning streak to 5
out of 5 and we have now reached the end of the qualifying rounds.
We are now classified as 'division winners' and will proceed to finals, which we will hopefully know more about soon.
The most recent debate was closely fought against St Stephens, but we managed to win by two points.
We are very proud of these students, as well as the other team members: Asmaa, Cyrine and Marcel. We also
couldn't get by without the guidance and assistance of Ms McDonald. We are grateful for all the support that has
been provided to this team from the school community. Stay tuned for information about the finals!

39 students woke up bright and early on Friday morning to be told by the weather man that
there was a 100% chance of rain and possible thunderstorms forecast for their Rottnest
fishing trip outing. They bravely arrived at Hillary’s Boat Harbour, took some Kwells and
aboard we went the Rottnest Fast Ferry.
As we sailed off into the deep blue, some students were just discovering their ‘sea legs’.
During the trip, three students leant over the boat and showed the rest of the class what they
had for breakfast. Once we had landed, the students grabbed their rods and headed off to
the shop to buy $5 small chips. (Lesson one: everything costs twice as much here). We
grabbed our bikes and to many student’s dismay, put our helmets on. After training some
students how to ride without training wheels we headed off to our first beach; Thompson
Bay.
The weather did a 180 and shined bright the whole day. (Lesson two: sometimes the
weatherman gets it wrong). With the rays shining over the pier, the students hooked up their
rods, baited their line, cast and patiently waited. Our first catch, a healthy herring, was
caught by Joel Andreou. He was in line for fishing guru when he caught the second fish for
the day. Aaron Deeks came creeping up the tally when he caught nine fish without any bait
or burley, CHAMPION! We had two hungry pelicans hovering around the whole day waiting
for students to drop their fish. In the end, students treated them to some morning tea.
A special mention should be made to Cameron James who managed to catch a Tim
Powter during his cast. Luckily, he made it up by catching eight herring. Mr Utting showed
the students his Bear Gryll’s expertise in scaling fish ready for Mrs Tkachenko’s dinner.
The day passed quickly and suddenly the clock read 1:30pm. Those who were fed up with
catching seaweed headed off with Mr Walczak for a scenic tour of the island. Those who
were determined to be the next Rex Hunt, headed to the next jetty to try their luck there.
Daniel Ashman took the fishing guru lead by catching his last three fish within two minutes,
just as we were about to pack up for the day, passing Aaron’s tally. After a successful
catch and release of 144 fish, the students returned their bikes and headed off to the ferry.
A smooth ferry ride kept every student’s lunch down. What seemed like a long day, had no
effect on the students, as they were just as hyper on the way home as they were heading to
Rotto. Let’s hope they slept well that night.

Term 2 Lunchtime Rock Band Amphitheatre Concert
On Friday 9 June, Greenwood College Music Department held the Term 2 lunchtime Rock Band Amphitheatre
Concert in the college amphitheatre near the English Department. This concert was an opportunity for the students
in the rock bands to get a feel for performing in the lead up to the Annual Music Camp and Primary School Music
Tour (June 16-19) and the Winter Concert (August 9). This also enabled the students to show off what they have
been working on for the last two terms. There was a great turnout with an estimate of at least 150 Students.
The Concert was set up by the Year 11/12 Certificate II Music Class in Period 4. It was a stressful hour for the students
as we had to take everything down from the music room to the amphitheatre. There was only just enough time to do
a token sound check before the siren rang for lunch.
The Senior Rock Band opened the concert with an instrumental version of ‘Friday On My Mind’ By The Easybeats. The
song was fast and got the audience going. Next up was one of the Junior Rock Bands, they played ‘When It All Falls
Apart’ By The Veronicas. This song was uplifting and got people singing along. After that the other Junior Rock Band
played ‘All The Small Things’ By Blink 182. The song is well known which ensured that the crowd loved it. After that the
Intermediate Rock Band played ‘Basket Case’ By Greenday. Any Greenday song is challenging and the
Intermediate Rock Band pulled it off with ease. To finish off the concert, the Senior Rock Band performed ‘Never Tear
Us Apart’ By INXS. The song was written in compound time, which for a high school rock band is quite a feat. The
Senior Rock Band managed to keep in time really well throughout the whole song.
After the concert, all students helped pack up the rock band equipment cutting down the time required for packing
up. Jack Claeys – Year 11 Music Prefect
