NURSERY
Have a little one crying or needing a diaper changed? We want you to know that the nursery/cry room
is always open for your use during worship services. There is a television in the room so that you won’t
miss out on anything happening in the sanctuary. The nursery/cry room is P204 (yellow classroom).

Week of October 28, 2018
To help with our Sunday morning fellowship at St. James, we encourage families to bring in breakfast
food to share with our congregation. This will allow church and school families to give back to their
church family by sharing some tasty breakfast foods. Each week we will gather sponsor families to bring
in food for the Sunday school hour. St. James has typically purchased between 6-9 dozen donuts each
Sunday for this time. So instead of St. James purchasing the donuts, each family can sign up to bring in
coffee cake, sweet rolls, fruit, bagels, etc. Please make sure your donation is in the cafeteria before
the 8:00 a.m. service each week (food items may be dropped off in the cafeteria after school on Friday
or during Saturday evening service). Please label the food items for Sunday morning fellowship.
Questions/Answers:
1. Do the foods have to be homemade? No, you are welcome to bring in homemade food,
but you are also welcome to bring in purchased food.
2. Can an organization within St. James sponsor a week? Yes, we are strongly encouraging
organizations, classes, etc. to support a week.
3. What if we don’t get a sponsor for a week? Then we will order extra donuts for that week.
4. Will coffee and juice continue to be provided during this time? Yes, the normal coffee and
juice will continue to be provided by St. James. The sponsors are just providing the food.
We are continuing the trial run of this donut hour supplement through the end of this year. Please sign

SUNDAY ADULT CLASSES (9:15-10:15 A.M.)
A MAN NAMED MARTIN–PART 3: THE MOVEMENT led by Pastor Heckert in the cafeteria
(P212). From Luther’s 95 Theses in 1517 to the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, God was at work in
the Reformation. Fierce debates over Scripture, church doctrine, and late medieval church practice
led to theological positions articulating salvation as God’s grace in action, with man being left to add
nothing to his own salvation. In A Man Named Martin–Part 3, viewers will see how the Reformation
transformed European society and, eventually, left a profound impression around the globe. Join us
for the video and discussion in the cafeteria during the adult instruction and fellowship hour!
ADULT INFORMATION (NEW MEMBER) CLASS led by Pastor French in the fellowship hall
(F202). This class is for all those who would like to join our congregation or just learn more about the
teachings of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. For members, this is also a great opportunity to
brush up on your fundamentals of the faith and to meet some potential new members. Everyone is
welcome!
A DEEPER LOOK moderated by Grace Gillespie in Room P202 (green classroom). This group
discusses the Bible lessons (pericopes) which are read in church each Sunday. You are invited every
Sunday, but will not be lost if you miss a Sunday. This is a casual class with lots of interaction. We
pray for each other and care for each other. Join us today and every Sunday.
SUNDAY SCHOOL (9:15-10:15 A.M.)
Every week, we will meet in the Orange Classroom for the opening of Sunday school. The classes will
then proceed to the following rooms:
2 Yr. Olds - Preschool: Yellow Classroom
K - 2nd Grade (Lower Elementary): Orange Classroom
3rd - 5th Grade (Upper Elementary): Red Classroom
6th - 8th Grade: Church Office Conference Room
High School: Church Office Work Room
What are the 2 year olds - 5th graders learning about? Starting with Genesis, we will work through
the Bible in three years through major Bible stories from the Old Testament, the Gospels, and Acts.
Students will learn and grow in faith alongside their peers as they explore the Bible, draw connections
to the Small Catechism, and learn the traditions of the Lutheran Church. If you have questions about

What are the 6th - 8th graders learning about? Led by Bill & Karin Crum each week, the class will
aid students in their preparation for confirmation. The class has allowed for incredible discussion and
participation by all who attend. The students WILL be in Scripture and the Catechism at EVERY

WEEKDAY BIBLE STUDIES
COFFEE CLUB led by Pastor French on Thursdays 7:00-7:45 a.m. in the church conference room.
WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY - “PARABLES” led by Barbara Kirkpatrick on Mondays 7:00-9:00 p.m.
in the church conference room. Everybody likes stories, but not everybody can tell a good one. Good
stories can both amuse and instruct. In fact, they often instruct precisely because their hearers enjoy
them. People listen better to what interests them than to what bores them. It is often the case, therefore,
that good teachers are also good storytellers, and our Lord Jesus Christ is the best of both.
WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY - “LUKE, PART 1” led by Jan Harris on Tuesdays 9:30-11:00 a.m. in
the fellowship hall (F202). Blessings for the reader, as you study Luke’s carefully researched account
of Jesus’s life. Consider yourself on a journey with Luke to learn more about Jesus of Nazareth, whose
body, crucified for the forgiveness of our sins, becomes the temple of the living God.
THURSDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY led by Pastor Heckert on Thursdays 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the
conference room. We are (a bit belatedly) back in action! Join us every Thursday night as we resume
our study of Genesis! Come for the discussion and strengthening of your faith, but stay for the off-topic
jocularity and Hebrew vocabulary lessons! See you there!
MEN’S BIBLE BREAKFAST led by Doug Schroeder on Fridays 6:00-7:00 a.m. at the Downtowner
Restaurant. You can come for coffee or breakfast at 6:00 a.m. or just for the Bible study on the Scripture
lessons for the coming Sunday which begins about 6:25 a.m.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
LIFE THOUGHTS IN THE CHURCH YEAR: Life Thoughts are designed to help pastors and
congregations see the church year through the lens of the sanctity of human life; they are based on the
appointed readings from Lutheran Service Book. October 28 – If our life-affirming message meets with
opposition, that doesn’t mean we’ve gotten it wrong. It ought not frighten us into silence but rather
encourage us to persist. The fallen world and sinful flesh persecuted the prophets (Jeremiah 26:7-11),
the apostles, the reformers, and even Jesus. He Himself has privileged us to minister His own truth and
love (John 15:19). Humankind beholds in us the One they cannot overcome, Him who overhauls them!
Compassionate Master, strengthen and sustain us in Your Gospel labor. Amen.
SAVE THE DATE – OCTOBER 30 – REFORMATION HYMN SING: Dr. James Marriott,
the Kreft Chair for Music Arts and Director of Musical Arts at Concordia Seminary (St. Louis),
will provide music for a Reformation Hymn Sing on Tuesday, October 30 at Grace Lutheran Church
(102 Buckingham Drive, Lafayette, IN). A potluck dinner will be served starting at 5:30 p.m. Grace
Lutheran Church will provide the main course. It is requested that attendees bring a side dish. Last
names A-G please bring a side dish, H-P please bring a dessert, and R-Z please bring a salad to share.

VOTERS’ ASSEMBLY: The next regular meeting of the St. James Voters’ Assembly, the governing
body for our congregation, is on Sunday, November 11 at 12:15 p.m. in the cafeteria. A light lunch will
be served prior to the meeting. Any communicant member in good standing age 18 or older is eligible to
become a member of the Voters’ Assembly. We encourage all St. James members to attend the meeting
and, if you desire and are eligible, become a voting member of the congregation. If you would like to
join, please contact Nola Hecht in the church office (423-1616, [email protected]) no later than the
Thursday prior to the meeting. You must be present at the meeting in order to join.
RESTORATION CELEBRATION: Join us for a celebration of the sanctuary restoration completion
on Saturday, November 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We will have live music, a brew tent, chili cook-off,
pie-eating contests, bounce houses, babysitting, smoked pork, and a corn hole tournament! Pre-order
your tickets now -- admission price is $10/ individual or $20/ family which includes chili and a drink.
The price at the door will be higher, so stop by the welcome center and get yours today! Please see

off and cornhole tournament. Sign-ups will also be posted in the cafeteria. As of now, we have six area
LCMS pastors as judges for the chili cook-off! We are very excited to spend time with those who made

NAMETAG UPDATE: Wearing your nametag is optional during these months when the sanctuary
restoration is going on. This is the time to make sure you still have a nametag. If you have your nametag
with you, please wear it and let me know that you have it. If your nametag is at church, make sure it is
on one of the banners. If you cannot find your nametag, please complete the Nametag Request Form
found in the three nametag return baskets: (1) in the cafeteria--church, (2) in the basket just outside the
exit door, or (3) the basket located between the nametag banners. We are planning to have a new
nametag banner soon with space to include our regular Purdue friends. If you have any questions or

BE SURE TO USE YOUR THRIVENT ACTION TEAMS: Can you believe we are heading into the
4th quarter of 2018? It’s not too late for you to take advantage of the Thrivent Action Teams in 2018.
All benefit members of Thrivent can lead two projects per calendar year.
Is St. James having a special event in the next few months? Do you have a family in need
because of medical bills or other hardship? Do you want to help the disabled or elderly by
providing lawn service (raking leaves, cleaning gutters, etc.)? Is the church youth group
planning to go to the National Youth Gathering and needs to do fundraising for this event? You
can do one of these projects or any other worthwhile project and receive as much as $250 seed
money! Not sure how to begin? If you are a member of Thrivent Financial, we are here to help
you. It is so easy to apply. Call the Thrivent Financial office at (765) 449-8888 and ask for
Mary Prill (available on Monday and Wednesday each week). She will be happy to assist you
by answering any questions you might have and help you with the process.

CHRISTIAN FRIENDSHIP: What a nice way to share Christ’s love - send a card to a friend,
neighbor, or family member who needs a little joy. Check out the free card display in the welcome
center next to the scrip counter. Show your concern; send a little love. “My little children, let us not love
in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth” 1 John 4:18.
STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Romans 3:20 – “For by works of the law no
human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.” The Law
of God is good – it’s just that we sinners cannot save ourselves by the Law. Salvation is a free gift of
God because that is the only way we could ever be saved. The Law shows us God’s holiness and thus
our own sin. And now in Christ we can look at the Law and see it in a new light as well – as a guide for
how to live a godly life in thanksgiving to God for His gracious forgiveness in Christ.

CALLING ALL YOUTH TO ACTION …
Tuesday, October 30 - Pumpkin Carving Contest (JH/HS), 6:30-8:00 PM
This is a family affair -- come one, come all. Let’s see who’s the best gourd guru! We will
have prizes for the scariest, the funniest, the prettiest, the most creative, and the best Gospel-
sharin’ pumpkin. The pumpkins will be supplied with spoons and knives, but you can bring
your pumpkin carving tools from home. All ages are welcome. RSVP to Lynn Keiser at
[email protected] so we can have enough pumpkins!
Saturday, November 3 - St. James Craft Fair (JH/HS), 9AM-2PM
This is a long-time St. James tradition that this year is being organized by the 8th grade as a
fundraiser for their Washington D.C. trip, so come and support them.

HAPPY FALL: We have had a fun start to the school year! Hearing the little kids over my head every
morning “stomp and march” as they sing Christian songs and pray each day is such a blessing! We
should all be so very proud of the mission we are involved in at St. James. Anytime you have a second,
you should swing in on Wednesday morning at 8am for the bigger kids Chapel in the new gym or the
little kids each morning in the fellowship hall. The singing and love for Jesus is good for your soul!
We started out decent this year, but we are starting to see a decrease in income. We currently have
groups together researching this at the beginning of the year rather than waiting until the end of the year.
There are some tuition delinquent accounts we are working on currently. We have to all remember that
October is a very rough month for us in the business office due to lack of funds. Some of the reason
behind this is the voucher money doesn’t arrive until the end of October, but we have to continue to pay
teachers. Therefore, it makes funds very tight but we are making it, so please keep up the good work!
I will share a thought I had the other day. I am wondering if there is an interest in sponsoring families/
children that are having a hard time finding the funds for their education? Let me know if you have
some interest in this and we can continue to research our options. With that said, please have a happy
and safe fall and enjoy the cooler weather! Thanks again for being such a vital part of this amazing
Christian ministry for so many little hearts.

Saints Are Blessed in the Eternal Presence of Christ
“A great multitude … from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages,” cry out,
“Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne” (Rev. 7:9–17). Faith-filled saints from
every place and time, with unified voices, eternally magnify the Lamb of God. As His beloved
children, we, too, “shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:1–3). Joined with the throng of angels and
myriad saints, we shall “serve him day and night in his temple” (Rev. 7:9–17). In our earthly
tension vacillating between saint and sinner, faith and doubt, sacred and profane, we earnestly
seek Jesus to calm our fears, comfort our spirits and forgive our sins. The Holy Spirit through
faith in Christ propels us forward, fortifying us in Word and Sacrament, to our eternal home. In
the midst of our constant struggle as believers, we need to be blessed. And so we are. The poor in
spirit, the meek, the hungry, the thirsty, the merciful, the pure and the persecuted are all blessed,
and we will most certainly inherit the kingdom of heaven (Matt. 5:1–12).
