Celebrating Our All-Star TeamJanuary 2017 is School Board Recognition Month—a great time to focus on the crucial role an elected board of trustee plays in our communities and schools.

The North East ISD Board of Trustees is made up of seven community leaders. They receive no pay for their dedicated efforts. They not only volunteer their time and effort for local schools, but they also speak up for the system of public education on a statewide level. These public servants sit through meetings, read detailed reports, listen to parents’ concerns, and do the hard work to benefit the students and the community at large.

Each January, we pause in our regular activities to say thank you to these dedicated volunteers. Join us in saying thank you to our All-Star Team!

Tooth decay (cavities) is one of the most common chronic conditions of childhood in the United States. The good news is that tooth decay is preventable. Here’s what parents and guardians can do:

• Protect your child’s teeth with fluoride. For example use fluride toothpaste• Talk to your child’s dentist about dental sealants to protect teeth from decay.• Have your child visit a dentist for a first checkup by age 1, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.• Find a dentist if your child needs one. Read reviews on your dentist too.

These are just a few oral health tips. This information is according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). To learn more click here.

Congratulations to Churchill High School junior, Jennifer Nguyen, for winning the Texas Youth Art Month (YAM) Flag Design competition for high school. Only one design is selected for each level (elementary, middle school, and high school), and North East ISD is proud to have the high school winner this year. Jennifer’s teacher is Elise Johnson.

Youth Art Month is a celebration of the visual arts, and encourages support for quality school art programs and promotes art material safety. The Council for Art Education (CFAE) administers the program at the national level. The program provides a medium for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences unlike any other curriculum subjects, including: Problem solving, Creativity, Observation, and Communication.

The exhibit of 100 selected artworks from across the state along with the Flag design winners will be on display at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin and then in the Lower Rotunda of the Texas State Capitol Building. The dates for the shows are March 6-26 at the Bob Bullock and March 29-April 4 at the Capitol.Jennifer Nguyen looks forward to having her work on display at the Capitol.

In accordance with Title VI-Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX-Education Amendment of 1972, Section 504-Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title II of the American with Disabilities Act of 1992, the North East Independent School District does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, sex or handicap.

The North East ISD PTA Council work diligently on opening day, Jan. 18.

NEISD Clothes Closet for Students NowOn Wednesday, Jan. 18, North East ISD’s Clothes Closet opened its doors for the first time. Housed in its own facility, Clothes Closet provides new and gently used clothing to students throughout NEISD. It is the first facility of its kind that serves an entire school district in the city.

School counselors receive vouchers and give them to students who they feel are in need. Students can then come to the facility, which is open every Wednesday during the school year from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

“Students will be able to pick out five tops, five bottoms, and five pairs of new socks and underwear each semester,” said NEISD PTA Council VP and Clothes Closet Chair Cathy Reed. “They also receive one coat and a couple of jackets for the year.”

The building is owned by the District and was donated for the program’s use. The store is run entirely by volunteers who sign up to help from school PTA programs all across NEISD. It’s a program strongly supported by District leaders because of the need it will fill for students.

“We want to give kids confidence,” said Reed. “We want them to stay in school. We know from hearing about it from other

districts in the state, that absenteeism can sometimes be caused by a lack of clothes to wear for school. So if we can at least take that out of the equation, we are helping.”

The Clothes Closet is always in need of clothing or monetary donations. They can be dropped off at the facility at 8758 Tesoro Drive on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
