United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous PeoplesAustralia is home to the world’s oldest continuing culture and First Peoples have sustained incredible systems of knowledge and learning across tens of thousands of years. The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples provides an internationally recognised framework of best practice when engaging with First Peoples which informs the development of this plan.
The declaration states that First Peoples have a right to self-determination and participation in decision making in matters which affect their rights. Critical to the success of the implementation of the Griffith Health First Peoples Health Plan is linking the engagement to the hopes and aspirations of First Peoples and meeting the needs of First Peoples and their communities.
Universities Australia, Indigenous Strategy 2017–2020The strategy also recognises that true partnerships between universities and First Peoples communities are essential to delivering the best outcomes for First Peoples, and that such partnerships should give voice to First Peoples in decision making that affects First Peoples communities. Griffith Health recognises the positive advantages of a tertiary education for First Peoples and acknowledges the continuing contributions of First Peoples to the university.
Engagement
An integrated First Peoples Health ApproachThe Engagement Plan outlines initiatives that build on the goals of the Griffith Health First Peoples Health Plan 2016–2022 and the Griffith University Engagement Plan 2015–2018. Aligning with the overarching goals of the Griffith University Strategic Plan 2018–2019, it integrates new and existing activities for the group to further engage with its internal and external partners and the First Peoples Health Community Organisations, Industry and Partners we service. The Plan aims to promote Griffith Health’s commitment to First Peoples and First Peoples’ health.

First Peoples health engagement The Griffith Health First Peoples Health Plan highlights five key focus areas that align with Griffith Health and the University’s strategic, core activity and supporting plans. First Peoples health engagement is the first key focus area of the Plan and underlies the work of Griffith Health’s engagement, learning, teaching and research activities in First Peoples health. There are nine specialty areas of First Peoples health engagement in the First Peoples Health Plan with corresponding targets, strategies, responsibilities and timeframes.
In First Peoples health community and clinical engagement, we build and develop community collaborations with the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health and Human Services Sector and focus on increasing clinical placement opportunities in First Peoples health.
Our work in First Peoples health staff engagement develops and formalises pathways to increase First Peoples staff numbers while encouraging staff excellence and a culture of engagement in First Peoples health.
Recruitment pathways retention and employment for First Peoples health students drive our First Peoples health student engagement, preparing work-ready First Peoples health graduates and establishing Griffith University as a university of choice for First Peoples health students.
Our extensive engagement with First Peoples health community organisations, industry and partners builds trust and presents opportunities for consultancy and research collaborations, providing professional benefits for our First Peoples health staff, students and graduates.
We promote the importance of First Peoples health Alumni to the continued success of First Peoples health students and Griffith Health’s engagement activities including nurturing connections with emerging First Peoples alumni leaders, honouring our outstanding First Peoples health alumni and establishing a First Peoples health alumni network.
Diversity
First Peoples health donor engagement and raising the profile of First Peoples health to potential donors are high priorities for Griffith Health. Central to the success of our donor engagement are capturing stories of donor support and developing targeted strategies for First Peoples health fundraising.
Our First Peoples health marketing and communications engagement focuses on building and maintaining a strong, consistent brand in First Peoples health. We engage with the Office of Marketing and Communication to develop targeted First Peoples health marketing and communication strategies, and explore opportunities to market the First Peoples Health Unit and the pathways available for First Peoples health students.
