Hello, fellow Band Parents! Football season is in full-swing and the marching band members should be in ‘full-stride’ as of now. The weather has turned cool (for the moment, at least) and the band students will be wearing their marching uniforms for the first time this season against Hazel Green. The show is really taking shape and I look forward to seeing the completed halftime show product! Speaking of halftime shows, our marching competitions are fast ap proaching. The first one is scheduled for Sept 27 th at Columbia, TN and the second one is Oct 18 th at Jacksonville State. Details about the competitions will be coming out shortly as well as detailed agendas, but I encourage you all to mark your calendars now in order to make it to one or both of these events. I know you will be impressed with the level of competition that will be there. Traditionally, Grissom Band has done very well at these competitions and I know this year will be no differ ent. I truly look forward to seeing the amount of progress that the kids have made since they first took the field at the beginning of the season, as well as seeing the polished halftime show that they have been so diligently working on since then. It should be an awe some show! Don’t forget about the Grissom Band Parents Association meetings that are held on the 4 th Monday of each month. The next meeting will be Sept 22 nd , in the Band Hall at 7 PM. Directors’ Notes September 2014

Calendar of events and attendance It is vitally important that you keep up with the calendar of events and rehearsals that have been posted on the band website and Charms since June 1, 2014. We try diligently to get 98% of every-thing on the calendar ASAP (June each year) so everyone can make their plans accordingly as to not interfere with rehearsals and performances. You can also sync the band calendar to your smartphones. Go to the website www.grissomband.com to see the instructions under Parents/Charms tab. If we make changes it will automatically sync the new information to your calendar! Remember all after school/evening rehearsals are REQUIRED and part of your child’s grade. We understand family emergencies and sickness. Please refer to the band’s Handbook posted on the band website under Parents tab for all information regarding attendance. WE HAVE SEVERAL STUDENTS WHO ARE MAKING A FAILING GRADE IN BAND BECAUSE THEY HAVE NOT BEEN TO THE REHEARSALS AND/OR FOOTBALL GAMES. Charms Many of you have updated your information in Charms to make it current and we thank you. There are still many who do not have email addresses and this is how we communicate with students and parents. Please go to the website Charms tab under Parents and see how to access your student account to make updates. If you do not know your student ID password please contact any board directors and they can give it to you. Football Games Please refer to the online calendar for all football game dates. Most are on Friday evening. We have 1 more Thursday night game: September 25th at Milton Frank Stadium. For all in town games it is the parent/student’s responsibility to get to Milton Frank.

We take school buses to the out of town games and will feed everybody before departing Gris-som. Please be sure you have paid your $25.00 away game travel fee to cover the cost of the meals and to help with the bus transportation a little or your student will not be al-lowed to travel with the band. Meeting time for games at Milton Frank is 5:45 pm now that we are wearing band uniforms. Look for the Rental trucks at the north end of the field at Milton Frank and meet in sections. Band Uniforms Our band uniforms are now 3 years old. As you will see, they look brand new. The reason: the uniforms do not go home with the students. They are stored on uniform racks that are kept at school and transported to every performance site. These uniforms are supplied to each student in the band. Therefore, the only responsibilities the students have are: 1) Wear their uniform with pride and distinction, 2) Take care of their uniform, and 3) Buy the black uniform shoes, black gloves, and black socks to wear with it. Each uniform costs $425. If a uniform is damaged beyond repair while in the student’s possession, that student will be responsible to replace any or all damaged parts (coat, trousers, hat, and plume). ALL students are responsible for CORRECTLY hanging up their uniform after each per-formance. Students are NOT dismissed after the performance until EVERYONE’s uniform on their respective cart is hung up correctly. Students who leave before their uniform cart is dismissed may lose their PRIVILEGE of wearing the Grissom High School Band uniform. Marching Contests The Contest band will participate in two marching contests this season. These events are on Saturdays and will last ALL DAY. The dates have been posted since June. Our first show will be on Saturday, September 27th at the Columbia High School Invitation Show in Columbia, Tennessee. The second show will be Saturday, October 18th at Jacksonville State University. Both shows have great adjudicators and draw very good bands. All football band only members WILL travel with us to these contests even though they will not perform. We do this because they are a member of the band and they get to witness a marching contest which is very cool! Itineraries will be distributed the week of the shows to the students and we will also email these and post them on our website. We will have a rehearsal on Saturday prior to departing for each show. Again, these are ALL DAY ACTIVITIES. Band Instrument Inspection We will be conducting instrument inspections soon to make sure every student’s instrument is in proper working order. If not, we will send home a sheet describing what needs to be fixed and expect it to be repaired asap. If an instrument is not in proper working order it hinders the stu-dent’s ability to perform on it. We have already seen trombone slides that do not work, stuck valves and slides on other brass instruments, leaks in woodwind instruments, missing clarinet thumb rests, screws, etc. This is unacceptable and is not fair to the student trying to play the instrument. Please help us get all instruments in working order. Thank you!

UNIFORMS The band has done a fantastic job at the first couple of games. They look great too! We could not look so good without our army of uniform volunteers. THANK YOU!

Just a few reminders: Make sure your child has solid BLACK crew socks. Some of them have faded to gray from years of use. Please check them and purchase new ones if needed. Gloves will be sold at each game for $3 a pair. Please remind your child that the gloves are not to be stored in their hat boxes due to moisture problems. Also, hair either needs to fit up inside the hat or needs to be cut above the collar of the uniform. PLEASE, only water is to be consumed while in uniform. No food or colored drinks.

If you have questions concerning uniforms you may contact us at [email protected] Anna Grace and Beverly Olmsted Uniforms

NOTES FROM THE TREASURERS

Are you buying Scrip yet? There are many local merchants who participate in the Scrip pro-gram. If there is a store that you shop at frequently, you should check the merchant lists http://www.grissomband.com/fundraisersspirit.html posted on the Grissom Band website to see if they are a part of the program. We keep a variety of Scrip merchant cards on hand, but there are hundreds of merchants that participate, and I typically place orders a couple of times a month. So, if you know that you always go to Rosie’s on Saturday night or you always go to Wal-Mart to buy your gas, contact me and purchase some Scrip cards to keep on hand for those trips. Christmas is just around the corner and scrip cards make excellent gifts! If you are going to spend the money anyway, why not do it with Scrip and make money for the band and your student’s account? Here’s how the program works. The Great Lakes Scrip Center sells gift cards to the band at less than face value. The band then sells the gift cards at face value. How does that help you? When you purchase one of these gift cards, you designate your student to receive the credit. The band takes the money that they made from the sale of the gift card and splits that profit with 40% going to your designated student’s account and 60% going to the band general fund. The amount will vary by merchant and some are more generous than others. It may not seem like a lot when you look at it on a card by card basis, but the more you buy, the quicker it will add up.

NEW In-stock Scrip Merchants this year: Buffalo Wild Wings, Chipotle Mexican Grille, Dunkin Donuts, and Panda Express

Contact Bill McMahon at [email protected] or 256.527.9454 for more information or to order your scrip today.

S N w

Checks should be made out to “GBPA” and may be placed in the Treasurer’s Box in the band room or mailed to the GBPA post office box – GBPA, P.O. Box 4335, Huntsville, AL 35815. Please be sure to clearly mark the student’s name and what the check is for on ALL checks.

All Marching Band and Color Guard students MUST have their “Away Game Package” fee of $25 paid to cover the cost of meals and to help with the bus transportation a little or they will not be allowed to travel with the band.

Please note that students who are in Concert Band Only, also have a band fee that is due at this time.

Student financial information is available through CHARMS. If you need assistance accessing CHARMS, please contact the band directors or the treasurers. Debbie Searcy Grissom Band Co-Treasurer

Thanks to all of you who are current on your band fee payments. For those of you who have not paid (or have not signed an alternate payment plan), a late fee will be added to your account September 15, so please get your money in before then.

If you require an alternate payment plan, please contact the band treasurers at [email protected].

Citrus Fruit Sales are Coming!

The 2014-2015 Fruit Sale season is quickly approaching with our first sale coming up on November 21st and 22nd. The last report from the grower is that this year’s crop is a good one, so we are looking forward to bringing you another season of luscious Florida Indian River Groves citrus fruit. One item we have added the past couple of years and are continuing is a gift box, featuring a selection of naval or-anges, grapefruit, and tangelos. We will offer these for both the November and December sales.

Pre-order your fruit for convenience AND savings!

Once again, we will be offering an online pre-order website that will not only allow you the convenience of using a credit card for your purchase, but will also provide for you the assurance that your pre-order will be ready and waiting for you to pick up at your convenience on the weekend of the sale. And you will get a discount to boot! If you don’t want to order online, you will be able to download the pre-order form and send it with your payment to the address on the form. And, yes, you will still get the discount with the mailed-in order. There will be more details on the online pre-order process in the October newsletter or you can find it on the Fruit Sale page of the Grissom Band website in early October.

Work off those fees!

The fruit sales also offer you an opportunity to work off some of those band fees. If you and/or your student work at the fruit sale sites (Kangaroo Express or Bailey Cove sites), your student’s account will be credited $5 / hour worked. Not only is this a great way to work off fees, it is also a lot of fun and a time when you can get to know some of the other band parents a little better.

*** If you would like to work at the November fruit sale, send a note to [email protected] stating your request.

Sale dates are set!

Sale dates for the 2014-2015 fruit sale season are set as follows:

November 21-22;; December 12-13;; January 16-17;; and February 20-21

Locations for Fruit Sale

Once again, our primary sale site will be Kangaroo Express on South Memorial Parkway. They were a wonderful host for us last year and we look forward to working with them again this year. As in previous years, a secondary site will be set up on Saturday only on Bailey Cove Rd. near Grissom (just drive by and you will see us!).

E-mail List / Facebook

There are several ways to keep up with the latest information regarding our fruit sales. The two best ways are via our E-mail List and Facebook. Our e-mail database is used for pre-order deadline notification, fruit availability updates, and other fruit sale info that needs to be distributed to our customers. If you would like to be put on this list, just let us know by sending an e-mail to [email protected] You can just put “Fruit Sale E-mail List Subscribe” in the subject line and that will do it!

If you want to follow us on Facebook, we have created a Facebook page: (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Grissom-Band-Citrus-Fruit-Sale/142551175783324).

Fruit sale contacts

Jan and Jeff Brewer are coordinating the fruit sales this year, so if you have any questions about the upcoming fruit sales, please contact them at [email protected].

BUS EXEMPTION INFORMATION ALL students are required to ride the bus to the away football games and band competitions with the band. Parent(s)/legal guardians may choose to pick up and drive their student home. If you plan to drive your stu-dent home after the completion of any away event, you will need to complete and submit a bus exemption form 24 hours in advance of the event to validate the exemption. (Examples: Friday Away Game, turn in form no later than 3:30PM on Thursday. Saturday Band Competition, no later than 10AM on Friday.) Completed forms are to be turned in to the BUS EXEMPTION ENVELOPE located on the window of the band director’s office. Students may leave after they have been dismissed from their uniform carts and properly signed out at the completion of the event (not after our band's performance) - the only exception is a family emergency. A des-ignated chaperone will be located in front of BUS 1, we ask that both parent and student be present at sign out. You must sign out your student before you leave so that you do not delay the band’s departure. Thank you for your cooperation!

CHAPERONES Special thanks to all the parents who volunteered to chaperone this fall! If you are interested in chaperoning an ‘Away Football Game,’ we still have a few openings for our October Away Games. Please contact the Chaperone Committee for more information. We are looking forward to an exciting marching season!

Hey, Baby! Attention 2015 Seniors and Parents of 2015 Seniors: The deadline for senior ads for the yearbook will be sometime in October (historically). While you are working on those senior ads, please send me a few baby photos to use in the senior presentation for the Band Banquet in the spring of 2015. My deadline will be January 31, 2015, but while you have those photo albums out for the yearbook, please consider sending me a couple of photos before putting them back in storage.

I would like 3 or 4 photos, but will settle for at least one. My goal is to have 100% participation for the 2015 Band Seniors.

If you need your “before” or baby photos of your senior scanned, I will gladly do it for you. Please don’t spend money somewhere to have this task done.

Contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions.
