Biography Renée Anne Poulin is an Instructor of Italian in the World Languages Department. She has received her doctorate in Italian (major) and Music (minor) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2012. Her scholarship is of an interdisciplinary nature: her Ph.D. is defined by a deep interest in Italian literature, but is also shaped by musicology and through her extensive training in violin performance at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. In her research, she has combined these two disciplines in order to study the symbiotic relationship between literature and music. Her recent article “La virtuosa” published in Problemi di critica goldoniana reflects this syncretic approach as well, and analyzes Carlo Goldoni’s portrayal of women singers in his metatheatrical works. Her dissertation project entitled “Sacred and Profane Opera: Pre-Metastasian Libretti in Rome (1623-1721),” identifies the specificity of the Roman contribution to the dramma per musica leading up to the operatic début of Pietro Trapassialias Metastasio (1698-1782), in 1724.
