Water Table

The spaces between the grains are filled with air.

The spaces between the grains are filled with water.

Pores – the spaces in between rock particles

Permeable – materials that allow water to pass through them easily. Ex. sand and gravel

Impermeable – materials that water cannot pass through easily. Ex. clay and granite

Ground Water Notes

Saturated Zone – the pores in the rock or sediment are completely filled with water.

Water Table – the top of the saturated zone

Unsaturated Zone – the pores in the rock or sediment are filled with air.

Aquifer – Any underground layer of rock or sediment that holds water.
