Design Matters! Camp provides the opportunity to experience life as a design student on a university campus, offering motivated high school students a week long, immersive introduction to design thinking, design education and careers in design. Participants may live in university housing and work directly in the studios of the award- winning Art + Architecture Building at the heart of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. They will also visit significant architectural sites in downtown Knoxville and the surrounding areas, including our state-of-the-art digital fabrication facility, the Fab Lab, which boasts over $800,000 of equipment aimed at expanding students’ creative makeability. CAMP GROUNDS JULY 9 - 14, 2017 Curiosity is the sole prerequisite. Design Matters! Camp is an introduction to design and where a career in design can take you: Architecture. Interior Design. Landscape Architecture. Urban Design. And more! Design is not just a thing or a place; it is a way of thinking, a process that allows you to solve problems and innovatively create what the future may be. This camp is for those interested in the design of objects and space and for those who want to better understand how design impacts the human experience and the world we live in. Faculty-led studios and lectures will introduce students to different ways of thinking, seeing and re-imagining our built environment. Previous architecture or design experience is not necessary. Students must have completed their freshman year in high school and be 17 years or under to attend. 2017 TUITION: $615 • Full-day faculty-led studios and hands-on instruction • Access to Fab Lab and Art + Architecture Building • Field trips, walking tours and transportation • Evening activities that build life-long friendships • Design materials, state-of-the-art equipment and digital technology • Engagement with the dynamic UT campus - Be a Vol for a week! Students will learn how to communicate their ideas through 3-D printing, laser-cutting and traditional means of drawing and model making. Students work on design projects that vary in scale during daily studio sessions in both the Art + Architecture Building and the downtown Fab Lab. A ceremonial “tagging” of the famous UT Rock Students experience Knoxville and myriad architectural, infrastructural and landscape gems through historian-led walking tours, visits to botanical gardens, the famed Norris Dam and Haley Farm and student and faculty-led design/build projects.
