Prepared by Group 8

What is Tsunami? Tsunami is a series of water waves caused by the displacement of a large volume of a body of water, usually an ocean.

Tsunami waves do not dramatically increase in height. But as the waves travel inland, they build up to higher and higher heights as the depth of the ocean decreases.

What to do during a Tsunami Go to higher ground or if possible move at least one kilometer away from all beaches and the water's edge of harbors and coastal estuaries.

Take only essential items that you can carry, like important papers, food, etc...

It may be in your own interests to walk to safety if possible to avoid traffic jams.

If you cannot leave the area take shelter in the upper storey of a sturdy brick or concrete multi-storey building.

Do not go to the coast to watch the tsunami.

Tune into your emergency broadcasters

Do not go near the shore to watch a tsunami hit. If you can see it, you are too close to escape.

What to do after a Tsunami Continue listening to a Weather Radio or other reliable source for emergency information

Help injured or trapped persons

Use the telephone only for emergency calls

Stay out of the building if waters remain around it

Examine walls, floors, doors, staircases, and windows to make sure that the building is not in danger of collapsing.

Inspect foundations for cracks or other damage

 Look for fire hazards.

Check for gas leaks and look for electrical system damage.

Check food supplies. Any food that has come in contact with flood waters may be contaminated and should be thrown out.
