INTRODUCTION Arles, a city in the South of France where life is easy, is situated 3 hours from Nice by car, 3 hours from Paris by TGV (high-speed train), 45 minutes from the Marseille-Provence airport and 40 minutes from the Avignon TGV station. Within a radius of 50 km Arles offers the cities of Avignon and Nîmes, and the Pont du Gard site.

Arles is listed as a UNESCO world heritage of humanity site for three reasons : its historic old city center and its Roman and Romanesque monuments, the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, a natural space of worldwide interest : the Camargue is listed as part of the world network of biosphere reserves.

Arles, an inspiring city which has revealed many artists : The dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, who lived in Arles for fifteen months. His stay in Arles corresponds to his most creative period.

Many places that he painted during his stay are still visible today. Pablo Picasso who, in 1971, two years before his death, decided to offer fifty-seven drawings to the city. This exceptional donation is

proof of his special attachment to Arles, based on his Andalusian passion for bullfighting and especially on the irresistible attraction of the “ghost” of Van Gogh.

Christian Lacroix, famous couturier, an Arles native, who spent his childhood in the corridors of the Réattu Museum, where he discovered the “Couturière’s Workshop” by Antoine Raspal.

The Gypsy Kings, internationally famous for their gypsy music, founded by Chico.

Artistic creation is especially important today. Yes, numerous new art galleries open every year.

The LUMA foundation project, to open in 2018, has called on famous personalities : Frank Gehry, Annabelle Selldorf and Bas Smets. The project will equip the city as a cultural center just as important as the largest cities in the world.

Arles, a human-sized city, provides : mostly charming hotels of which certain have been decorated by famous interior architects, diversified restaurants, including two which have received stars in the Michelin guidebook, a city center with unique shops to discover, museums exhibiting different facets of Arles : Roman times in the Arles archaeological museum, nature in the Camargue museum, Fine

Arts in the Réattu Museum, contemporary art at the Arles Vincent van Gogh Foundation, and the soon to reopen Museon Arlaten with its Provençal traditions.

The immense wealth of Arlesian heritage has allowed us to create this brochure, offering an infinity of possibilities to discover the city where past and future mix ; a true palette of offers for visitors with all the emotion, the authenticity, the experience, the permanent invitation that tourists expect...The commercial service of the Arles tourism office is at your service from Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
