From Father Mark Mertes, Pastor: I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you

always, the Spirit of truth. (John 14.15)

The Greek word “paracletos” is used to de-scribe the person Jesus promises to send to us to be with us always. “Paracletos”, or para-clete, is translated as “advocate” or “coun-selor”; Jesus is saying that through his Coun-selor within us He will be present with us in all things making known to us the grace of the Father in all times and places. When I hear the word “paraclete” I think of a pair of track shoes, or a pair of “cleats.” Back in the old days when I participated in grade school CYO track at the Bishop Ward track we would wear a special pair of shoes that had small metal spikes in them so that we could get good traction on the cinder or as-phalt tracks. I wasn’t very fast, but at least I didn’t slip and fall! How appropriate that Jesus promises to send us the Paraclete today! As we enter into our uncertain and ever changing future Jesus promises to give us a foothold, to help us get traction in all the new ways we are being asked to live: The Paraclete will help us understand our

our ReStart WyCo Road to Recovery guidelines.

Gratefully we are now able to offer public masses; at the same time we ask people to sign up for those masses so that we can know who has attended in the event of a virus outbreak. The Paraclete will help us figure out signups.

The Paraclete will help us get used to talk-ing to one another through our masks. I for one feel quite silly (or at least uncom-fortable) wearing a mask in public. The Paraclete will advise us that wearing a mask is a loving action that we can do to protect and help the most vulnerable among us.

The Paraclete will help us to get a foot-hold on our daily schedule; as we now look toward summer we can receive the Spirit’s advice on how to make the most of these days.

The Paraclete will help us to strengthen our efforts to serve those who do not have a home, health care and legal sta-tus.

The Paraclete will counsel us to be pa-tient as we reenter a more “normal” life; as Jesus’ followers we can model pa-tience and restraint in our work places.

So call on the Paraclete! Get some traction. Jesus will make our steps firm.

Catholic Cemeteries offers pre-need burial packages at significant discounts

Given the widespread and unexpected experienc-es of loss during the pandemic, Catholic Cemeter-ies of Northeast Kansas invites parishioners to consider the heightened importance of making pre-arrangements. To incentivize individuals and fami-lies to prioritize this pre-planning, Catholic Ceme-teries is offering significant and unprecedented discounts, ranging from $250 to $2,000 off pre-need burial packages, through June 15, 2020. Contact Catholic Cemeteries at 913-371-4040 or [email protected] to be connected to a local family service advisor. As Catholic Cemeter-ies phases into reopening offices for appointments, the archdiocesan ministry is installing plexiglass shield protectors and requiring staff to wear masks and observe other safety precautions.

Guide Book Directory Advertising Opportunity

We have begun updating our annual Guide Book Directory for our parish. This book contains perti-nent information for our Church—ministries, or-ganizations, events and more plus a complete directory of all members. This book is provided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to the parish. It is again being subsidized by local busi-nesses who advertise. If you own or manage a business, please call the parish office by June 15. Thank you for supporting this project.

Update Membership Information This is a perfect time to update your parish mem-bership record. Have you moved? Have you add-ed a new family member? Have you changed your phone number? Please call 913-299-3370 if you need to make changes. This will help our Guide Book Directory be as current as possible plus ensure you receive parish information. Thank you for your help and God bless you!

Training is required before volunteering with children

at the parish or school. To volunteer with children in the parish or school, you must first attend a Virtus “Protecting God’s Children” session and pass a background check. Trainings can be found at www.virtusonline.org. Your account must remain current with assigned articles. Contact Betty Ann Battson, Virtus Coordi-nator, 299-3728 or [email protected].
