From Father Mark Mertes, Pastor:

Here I am living in a house of

cedar while the ark of God dwells in a tent! (2 Samuel 7.2)

King David was very concerned that he lived in a palace and the Ark of the Covenant was still housed in a tent. As he discerned what sort of dwelling place he could make for the Most Holy God he was told by the prophet that it wasn’t for him to de-cide where God will dwell. But he was promised I will establish a house for you. God’s plan was more mysti-cal than David could have imagined! This fourth Sunday of Advent we hear God’s plan to be always and everywhere present among his peo-ple. The Good News is announced through the Archangel Gabriel to Mary that she will open the gates of grace for all human kind. Mary’s all-important “Yes!” models for us how we too can estab-lish a house for Christ. Our own homes, our domestic churches are the fulfillment of God’s idea to be always and everywhere present. By partici-pating in the sacraments, either in person or virtually, we open up our daily experiences to the outpouring of God’s healing. Continued in next column →→→→

Scripture Readings for Week of December 21-27

Mon/Lun: Song of Songs 2:8-14; Luke 1:39-45 Tue/Mar: 1 Samuel 1:24-28; Luke 1:46-56 Wed/Mie: Malachi 3:1-4, 23-24; Luke 1:57-66 Thur/Jue: 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16; Luke 1:67-79 Fri/Vie: Isaiah 62:11-12; Titus 3:4-7; Luke 2:15-20 Sat/Sab: Acts 6:8-10; 7:54-59; Matthew 10:17-22 Sun/Dom: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14; Colossians 3:12-21 Luke 2:22-40

By preparing an Advent place in our homes we anticipate God’s ar-riving in surprising ways. Perhaps we can have a nativity scene that waits for Jesus or a Christmas tree that is almost but not quite fully dec-orated. We can light the fourth can-dle on our Advent wreath. Each time we sit for a meal we can ask one an-other how Christ has shown up that day.

As disciples we can bring Christ to the world in our homes and workplaces and schools and church-es. Let us imitate Mary’s yes as we accept that God has planted his grace in our lives.

The Year of St. Joseph On the Solemnity of the Im-maculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, De-cember 8, 2020, Pope Fran-cis declared the beginning of the Year of St. Joseph. Please spend time getting to know this incredible saint. “Consecration to St. Joseph” by Father Donald Calloway is very beautiful and highly recommended!

Felix Navidad!
