'Slowdown' has become one of the most often used words to describe the state ofaffairs today. Be it the reverse movement of the global markets, the report card of the Indian economy measured in terms of GDP, the performance of industrial output or thepace at which bank credit flows to the commercial sector – slowdown finds a placeeverywhere.

In such trying times, it is not surprising that corporate earnings are witnessing a majorcontraction in growth for the fiscal 2009 as compared to the stellar performancerecorded in the previous period.

We are proud to state that Era Infra Engineering has beaten the trend and hasemerged as a clear contrarian, evident from its gravity-defying growth of 52.4% surgein net sales and trebling of net profits in Q4 2009 over the corresponding period inthe previous fiscal. While an unwavering focus on the company's core constructionbusiness, which accounts of almost 75 % of its business, contributed to the significanttopline growth, a boost in other income coupled with slower growth in interest rateshave helped the company record excellent growth in the bottomline.

With a robust order book position, strong execution skills and a commitment to deliverat all times Era Infra Engineering is all set to usher in even more exciting times for thecompany in the years to come.

JOY SAXENA, GROUP CFO: “ Year on Year growth of revenue to the tune of 62.3%and 66.9% growth in net profits during the year in spite of slowed down Global andIndian Economy, speaks itself very high on Company's Yearly performance. Focusedapproach and vision of top management along with dedicated and committed peoplecan only make it happen in any organization.”

Let’sTalk

A 3 member team shares how the new centralized procurement policyin Era, channelised through their Corporate Procurement Department,is guided by the concept of “Best Value for Money” and governed bybest practices of Group procurement. Result : Helps connect multipleenterprise resource planning systems to a central supplier relationshipmanagement system, provides complete control over procurementacross the organization & ensures centralized sourcing and contractmanagement leading to significant savings, lower operational costs, lower supply risk and finally higher profitability.

From Left :- Chinmayee Dasmohapatra - Asst. Executive Purchase Subhash Chand Nagar- AGM ProcurementSumit Girdhar - Procurement Officer

A. The Pareto Principle (also, known as the 80-20 rule) states that 20% of something is always responsible for 80% of the results. Thisprincipal is also applicable here as well, as around 80% cost of project is constituted by 20% of items. So, if we can manage the costof 20% items then effectively we will be controlling 80% of project cost. This was the idea of our Hon’ble Chairman when the corporateprocurement department was created for centralizing the procurement for all Group Companies for capital as well as major projectitems with the intent of saving valuable resources.

Today modern organizations operate in a very commercially pressured global environment. Therefore efficient functioning of materialmanagement has received greater attention and sourcing has been identified as one of the important areas for improvement of savingsand this is one way of demonstrating the value we add to the organization. As procurement professionals, we are playing very vitalrole in Era Group of Companies for following critical activities:

i) Cost & Quality Control: Cost plays a major role in every organizations/project success and profitability, hence main strategic role of corporate procurement is to control the cost of capital/project items by selecting right quality items at the right prices.

ii) Vendor Development: Introduction and selection of quality vendors for technically superior items.

iii Rate Approvals: Final negotiations and accord of rates approvals to release the P.O.’s to respective business units /companies for the capital items/major items.

iv) Commercial Terms & Conditions: Finalization of major commercial terms & conditions by which our risks of purchases are minimal and project cash flow is positive.

v) Vendor Complaints: Addressing and solutions to vendor complaints which raise their confidence in association with ourorganization and turned as assets for our future business.

Q. Can you share with us the strategic role which Corporate Procurement plays in Era Group?

Page 8: Growing at all times letter 12th May 09.pdfHAPPY BIRTHDAY ERA FAMILY WELCOMES YOU 20 Solutions on page 19 - Vince Lombardi COVER STORY 01 Era Infra reports gravity - defying Q4 growth

06

Q. What are the prime advantage of joint negotiations skills in a price-competitive scenario for Era and its Group Companies? Please share details for the same.

Q. What are some of the biggest challenges that confront your department and how do you counter these challenges?

A. In a price competitive scenario, a good organization gauges all paramaters from where it can generate profit, from where it can savecosts or manage funds effectively in the best possible way. This applies to our division as well.

Also, by dividing the procurement responsibilities among multiple divisions, technically, several staff members are doing the exact samejob across different locations, leading in duplication of work. By centralizing all procurement needs into a single department, theseredundant job positions can be eliminated. Additionally, the excess office space and equipment can either be liquidated or used formore productive business endeavors.

In today’s market scenario getting the right prices for quality items are the biggest challenges an organisation faces, and which canbe achieved to a large extent by centralized joint negotiations with the active involvement of the corporate procurement team and allbusiness units(BU)/Group Companies for their respective requirements. The major advantages working as a team are as follows:

i) Increase in the techno-commercial knowledge of individuals involved in the joint negotiations by sharing their views andknowledge.

ii) Improvement in the communication and interpersonal skills for individuals.iii) Selection of right item as per the project/company requirement.iv) Realization of existing data for future procurements for group of companies.v) Improvement in the negotiation skills.vi) Getting the best possible prices and quantity discounts.vii) Reduction in operating cost.

A. Measurement challenge: The biggest challenge is to further reduce the prices and finalize major commercial terms and conditions whichalready has been negotiated and submitted by vendors considering as their final offers at the BU/Company level. We are able to breakthrough the final offers submitted by vendors substantially by creating more competition, friendly discussions, and through well plannedand professional negotiation techniques.

The policy challenge: The second challenge is the acceptability by the Group Companies as previously each BU/Companyindependently handled their project requirements. Hence there was a feeling amongst them that the setting up of a separate team wouldentail a lenghty process and also raised doubts of creditability and responsibilities. However, with the professional and crediblehandling of this function, we have gained acceptance with different BU’s/Group Companies wherein they have seen the tangiblebenefits of a focussed team handling all procurement needs.

L E T ’ S T A L K

A. The solution proposed is designed to support a move towards an increased level of central purchasing, more corporate contracts(framework contracts) and a greater use of consortia. The overall aim being to increase the efficiency, effectiveness and economy ofprocurement, whilst allowing service management to concentrate upon their core functions.

Procurement is the common point of contact for departments in an organization, a central repository for corporate knowledge ofacquisition of goods and services. Effective procurement departments operate on a corporate oversight perspective. They evaluate the'total cost of ownership' of products, providing a durable product while minimizing operational support costs. They provide assistancein determining alternative acquisition and payment methods. Procurement functions compile and analyze historical data to identifyopportunities for cost avoidance, standardization of goods and services and implement pricing agreements for goods and servicesbased on volume or criticality, and corporate-wide services contracts.

Now a day’s more & more companies are having procurement functions on the board level. That was not the case some 10 or 15years ago. In most organizations, the procurement heads directly report either to Chief Technical Officer, the Chief Engineering Officer, the COO or the CFO but now some companies are equally considering the importance of the full fledged procurement division inthe organization and they are also appointing Chief Procurement Officer.

The case for a more centralized approach to procurement is very strong which applies to ERA also, as it offers the best opportunity tosupport the organization profit maximization.

Q. How strong would you rate the corporate procurement function in Era?

Page 9: Growing at all times letter 12th May 09.pdfHAPPY BIRTHDAY ERA FAMILY WELCOMES YOU 20 Solutions on page 19 - Vince Lombardi COVER STORY 01 Era Infra reports gravity - defying Q4 growth

07L E T ’ S T A L K

Q. Could you share with us the biggest achievements reported by your department and how were they achieved?

A. In most organizations, the procurement function as compared to the sales & marketing or with the finance or account function isconsidered a cost center while the other two are considered as revenue & cost management centers respectively. But in today’sscenario, where profit margins are getting thinner & managing funds is getting more complex and expensive, savings generated bythe procurement division is equivalent to the profits earned by other divisions. The skills required for world-class purchasing organizationinclude knowledge of the business they are purchasing for, analytical skills and interpersonal skills.

Keeping in mind the above facts Corporate Procurement team was created with engineering background professionals and some ofthe major cost savings for the items finalized by Corporate Procurement Department, which is measurable and well appreciated mymanagement, are as follows:

i) Baggage Handling System for Raipur & Indore Airport Projects.ii) Lifts & Escalators for Raipur & Indore Airport Projects.iii) Petroleum Products for Gwailor, Hyderabad & Rohtak-Bahadurgarh Road Projects.iv) Steel & Cement for for Gwailor, Hyderabad & Rohtak-Bahadurgarh Road Projects.v) Lifts & Escalators for Commonwealth Games Stadium Projects.vi) Lift & Compressors for NATRIP & MRVC Projects.vii) Glass Blocks for Stadium Projects.viii) Metal Ceiling for Raipur & Indore Airport Projects.ix) Passenger cum Material Lift for NTPC Kahalgaon project.x) Asphalt Sensor Pavers for Hyderabad & Rohtak-Bahadurgarh Projects.xi) Piling Rigs for NTPC Mauda & External Renting.xii) Boom Placers for External Renting.xiii) Transit Mixers for various projects.xiv) Crawler Cranes for In-house & External Renting.xv) Compressors for Nagpur Plant.xvi) DG Sets for Nagpur Plant.

Q. Going forward, what initiatives does the department plan toembark on to strengthen its performance in this area?

A. Initially, we started centralized procurement with corporate’s requirements for capital items and with the successes and measurableresults, it was further extended for E&M project items. Presently we are finalizing rates and major commercial terms and conditions forcapital items as well as for major E&M project items at the corporate level. Going forward, we are strengthening the corporateprocurement team and developing professionals to cover all the items which are only 20% of total project items but contributes up to80% of project cost with the orbjective of controlling costs and in turn enhancing profitability.

Riding on revival in demand from the infrastructure industries towards the fag end of the fiscal year 2008-2009, steelproduction picked up in March with most companies growing in double digits.

Leading private steel maker Tata Steel’s salable steel production has grown by 28%, while sales increased by 45%. SimilarlyJindal’s JSW Steel reported a 28% increase. The crude steel production for January – March quarter stood at 11 lakh tones, the highest ever in a quarter & 11 % more than last year.

State owned Steel Authority of India Ltd.(SAIL) sales also reported an increase albeit a relatively subdued 4.4% at 1.5 milliontonnes in March. SAIL’s last quarter sales grew at 3% over the quarter at 3.55 million tonnes, in line with its target of improvingthe Q3 sales. SAIL had produced 3.2 million tonnes of salable steel in its third quarter for FY08-09

However, is this beginning of a sustained demand upturn or just a blip in otherwise gloomy scenario? The industry is cautiouslyoptimistic as demand in construction, automobile sectors is picking up even though white goods segment continues to beunder pressure.

The worst however is clearly over. Nobody expects the repeat of October – December quarter, when prices crashed almost 50%& demand plummeted. The surge in demand kick started in January 2009 onwards.

Growing forward, growth witnessed would not be as high as the one recorded before the global crisis. Prices shall also beunder some pressure as globally the situation continues to be grim, but India is well poised to overcome challenges.

Contribution of plants towar ds living beingsLong ago the significance of plants was realized and effortswere undertaken to promote the same. It is not out of topic tomention that in ancient times gurus (saints) were successfullyperforming rituals and mediating below trees. Gradually, thegreen cover area started reducing inspite of several effortsmade by people/government etc. Perhaps more sincereefforts are required towards the green cover which mainlycontains the area under arboriculture i.e. plantation of trees& shrubs.

In real sense, plants are as important as other livingcreatures; rather they help us in different ways and servemankind. Their contribution by emitting oxygen in theatmosphere consumed by living beings cannot be overruled.Without any discrimination it is fair to say that every creatureis alive because of the existence of plants which producesoxygen. Plants play a major role in maintaining theecological balance of nature. They suffice multiple humanneeds such as food grains, vegetables, fruits, flowers, medicines and protection from adversaries. Over and aboveall, we cannot ignore the pleasure of enjoying colourfulgreenery provided by them. Plants are living objects andhave to die as per the law of nature. Even after death theygive significant contribution to living beings in different ways.Undoubtedly, we can say that, we are healthy and alive onlydue to the mercy of plants.

We are all aware of global warming which has led toincrease in temperature, spreading of diseases, loweringdown the work efficiency and so on, due to diminishing

number of trees and shrubs (vanishing greenery). It affects notonly mankind but all living species to survive in the universe.

The importance of plant lives is not very encouraging amongthe masses which is evident from the cutting of trees andbutchering of branches which are carried out to fulfill humanneeds and services. If the same situation continues then theday is not for away when we would have to carry out thepouch of oxygen in polybag to breathe and survive.

Last but not the east we should all pledge to become moreeco-friendly with nature. Plant more and more saplings andgenerate the same spirit in our offspring.

I will never forget youAround the corner I have a friend,In this great city that has no end,

Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,And before I know it, a year is gone.

And I never see my old friends face,For life is a swift and terrible race,

He knows I like him just as well,As in the days when I rang his bell.

And he rang mine but we were younger then,And now we are busy, tired men.

Tired of playing a foolish game,Tired of trying to make a name.

"Tomorrow" I say! "I will call on JimJust to show that I'm thinking of him."

But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,And distance between us grows and grows.

Around the corner, yet miles away,"Here's a telegram sir," "Jim died today."

And that's what we get and deserve in the end.Around the corner, a vanished friend.

Remember to always say what you mean.If you love someone, tell them.

Don't be afraid to express yourself. Reach out and tellsomeone what they mean to you. Because when you decidethat it is the right time it might be too late.

Seize the day. Never have regrets. And most importantly, stayclose to your friends and family, for they have helped makeyou the person that you are today.

Here is something interesting!

The moment you are in tension-

You will loose your concentration;

Then you are in total confusion and

You will feel irritation.

Then you will spoil personal relation;

Ultimately you won’t get any co-operation.

Then you will create more complication;

Then your B.P.may also raise caution

And you may have to take medication.

Indeed, understand the situation and

Try to think about the solution.

May problems be solved by discussion;

This will work out better in your profession.

Don’t think it my free suggestion,

It is only for prevention,

If you understand my intention

You never again take tension….
