Are we fixing the problem with the right tools?

Our answers will shape our approach and RESULTS

• Can land use changes alone reduce VMT fast enough?

• Is VMT reduction the solution to “growing cooler” or “zero-emission” vehicles?

• How does NJ deal with the millions of suburban residents living in “sprawl” conditions?

• Is transit viable in disparate development?

•Can “in –fill” development stop sprawl?

What’s Missing?

• Alignment of Interests– We have not developed a spirit of cooperation

between interest groups, e.g. environmentalists and DOT’s, business and government

• Education– Business Leaders– Local / regional planning boards / Officials– Governors / DOT’s– Colleges / Universities

• Communication– Removing the mystique– Speaking in Plain English

• Tools– Local officials have no tools to engage DOT’s /

developers, or the public. Do they have the tools they need? Have anyone asked?
