PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Our staff and students have been busy with

several learning opportunities as well as

extracurricular activities since the last newsletter.

This will be evident right through this addition of the

newsletter with many pictures and articles

highlighting the fantastic work and opportunities

that our students and staff have participated in

and provided.

On Thursday last week I attended South Australia’s Leader Day in Adelaide where all Principals

and leaders from right across the state, within the Department for Education met across Thursday

and Friday. This provided an opportunity to hear directly from our education leaders; Hon. John

Gardner (Minister for Education), Rick Persse (Chief Executive – Department for Education) and

Anne Millard (Executive Director – Department for Education). The message from all three of

these leaders was clear; we are making progress within our 10-year goal of being a world class

education system and we are now moving in to ‘wave 2’ of this. This is the time when our strong

foundations and hard work can be capitalised on and we can really see results and learning

outcomes for our students to accelerate. There is a clear focus on continual growth and

improvement for individual students and each site has the support and structures to continue

their individual improvement journey.

I attended several keynote and master class sessions across the day to hear other sites inspiring

journeys and to listen to the key decisions that enabled their success. The pleasing thing for me

was, upon reflection of YAS, some of those key building blocks and decisions are already in

place and have been made. Our continued focus on individual student growth and supporting

each student to achieve the best possible outcomes, while continuing to reflect and grow as

professionals and educators, means we are and will continue to strive for excellence for all our

students and as a school.

We have the external review being carried out on Monday and Tuesday of next week which will

add further recommendations and support to continue our improvement journey. We are

welcoming the opportunity to show off our amazing school, students and staff to the review

team!

This will be our last newsletter before holidays so I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all

a safe and happy Easter long weekend as well as a safe and relaxing holiday period.

Jasmine Crisp Workshop

On Thursday the 18th of March various students from years 7 to 12 participated in a full day

portraiture workshop with Jasmine Crisp and myself. We had a lot of fun and learnt new skills and

techniques, it was also great to be able to spend a full day on an artwork and see an artist in

action. Thank you Jasmine for coming to our school and sharing your knowledge and skills with

us.

One thing that I learned from Jasmine's workshop is the symbol (grid) method! Instead of using a

grid to get the right placement of the portrait, we used symbols which was a lot simpler. I

enjoyed being able to watch Jasmine paint her own portrait and how it came together

throughout the day. She was really helpful and super open to talk about anything! – Harper (Yr

12)

I really enjoyed doing the workshop because it was an amazing way to learn new things. Jaz

helped us with new strategies to get us a better result with our paintings. I learned a lot from the

workshop and would want to do it again if I could. – Sabine (Yr 7)I learnt how to do the grid

method in a different way which was cool. This helped me to figure out where to place my facial

features very accurately. I really liked the day, thank you Ms Flynn and Jasmine for the workshop.

– Sophie (Yr 10)

Year 12 Spotlight

English

In English last week, Year 12 students had to construct a photo that told a story or shared an

idea. This was to get them thinking about the conscious decisions producers had to make for

specific effects. This led to a better analysis in their review writing. – Ms Dreckow

Visual Art

Year 12 students have been working on their Visual Studies in art. They have been exploring

topics relating to religion, provocation and feminism in art. Students have been working on a

series of small appropriations to help them synthesise their learning. They have experimented with

various media including, painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, polymer clay, sculpting

with chocolate, embroidery and more. – Ms Flynn

Biology

In Biology, Year 12s recently completed an enzyme practical involving gelatine and pineapple

juice. – Mr Talbot

Page 4: Growing Minds, Shaping Hearts, Changing Lives

Angus Nowlan has been taking part in the Football Academy at Stage 2

and travels to Central Yorke School every Wednesday to participate in the

program.

Wes Goldsmith, Cooper Launer and Cain

Van Rysingen are in their second year of

participating in the automotive course

and are enjoying the hands on skills that

they are learning.

Harper Davison has been completing extension studies at Flinders University. She has been driving

to Adelaide every Tuesday to attend tutorials and lectures face to face. Doing this unit of work

from University translates into a grade that can go toward Harper’s ATAR and she can put units of

study towards future degrees.

Adelaide University Visit

On Monday 15th March representatives from Adelaide University visited YAS to speak with

students in Years 9-12.

Year 9 students worked with the Adelaide Uni STEM Academy through a workshop on Flavour

Chemistry. They learned about the science behind the taste and smell of food and how flavour

and aroma are researched on a chemical level.

The Year 10s completed a careers workshop which aligned with their current SACE studies in

Stage 1 Personal Learning Plan (PLP) by exploring pathways to different careers.

Finally, Year 11 and 12 students discussed university degrees and pathway options for future

study opportunities at Adelaide University.

It was a great chance for students to hear from different voices and participate in discussions

about their future. We are grateful to Adelaide University for making the trip over and sharing

their knowledge with us.

Study Room

Secondary staff at YAS are committed to supporting students to be successful. We have

implemented a supervised study room for all lessons across the week. The study room is for

students who are not timetabled in a face to face lesson to work quietly without distraction and

to receive support from secondary teachers when needed.

With many senior schools students undertaking flexible learning options, the onus is often on them

to manage their time and learning independently. This can be challenging for students to

navigate and we feel strongly that we need to put a framework in place at YAS to ensure the

best possible chance of success.

The expectation is that students working in the study room will work quietly without distracting

others. Maximising study time during the school day is an excellent opportunity for students to

spread their workload more evenly over the week, reduce work required out of school hours and

manage stress levels.

We encourage you to speak with your child about how they can maximise their timetabled study

room time.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Year 7/8 Cricket Clinic

Yorketown Area School was lucky enough to have Peter Brown from South

Australia Cricket Association deliver a workshop to the Year 7/8B class.

Unfortunately, due to a last-minute meeting, the 7/8A class were unable to

be involved in the workshop with Peter. All students practiced their

controlled bat and ball skills, throwing skills and bowling skills out on the

oval. To show off their batting skills they moved into the gym where they

played a game of continuous cricket.

Jaylen Collins was presented the Adelaide Strikers signed top and

certificate for the class. Jaylen was selected because throughout the

session he was attentive, worked hard in all drills, showed respect and was

willing to learn and take on feedback that was given to him.

During lunchtime primary students were able to show off their cricket skills to Peter through mini

tasks and a little game. Overall, it was great to see so many students with smiles on their faces.

Year 9 Surfing Excursion

What a great couple of days away from school the Year 9s had! Day 1 was perfect conditions

down at Berry Bay with waves not too big or rough and an ideal temperature. All students gave

it a go, got into the water and really enjoyed themselves. They also received a nice surprise in

the afternoon when a pod of dolphins came right up next to them. Sitting on the beach you

could hear the excitement and the energy coming from the students.

This year students stayed down at the Corny Point Caravan Park which meant some extra

bonding time. All students were fabulous and worked as a team to get all tents and swags up

and made sure everyone was ready so we could go out for dinner. The Howling Dog opened for

us, which was delightful, and the meal was delicious. We took a short walk down to the water

where the students had some quiet time, took in their surroundings and were able to be present

in the moment. After a long day, students went to sleep quickly which was amazing for Mr Talbot

and myself as we needed our rest as well.

Day 2 started off fresh but all students had their gear organised promptly so that when the bus

arrived at 8.30am they were ready to go for round 2. The first session was a little bit too cold for

me, but that did not stop the students as they got straight into it. Conditions were different from

day one with the waves being bigger and more vicious. But that did not stop our students from

having a ball and building their confidence!

I would like to thank all the instructors from Port Vincent Aquatic Centre that came down and

taught the students (and myself) new skills! It was an amazing couple of days, and I cannot thank

the instructors enough for their patience and kind caring nature that they brought with them.

Thank you to Anita and Mr Talbot for coming along to help and to our photographer Caitlin.

Even though Caitlyn was unable to participate in the water activities it was super amazing that

she came along and captured a great range of photos. Lastly, thank you to the fabulous Year 9

cohort! It was an amazing excursion, and it is a credit to you all that it went so well.

Mural Unveiling

This past weekend Kate Martin from the SYP Community Hub coordinated a fantastic event

showcasing emergency services in our area. As part of this event, we were also able to reveal

the mural we have been working on across 2020 and 2021. The mural was funded by Wellbeing

SA and was made to commemorate the 2019 bushfires. This mural acknowledged some of the

people who helped us and made us feel safe during and after the bushfires. Well done to the

students who lead the mural project, Jacinta Fry, Lucy Warren, Harper Davison, Jayden De Roos,

Gary Nowlan, Emily Lloyd and Emilie Heinrich-Smith. Thank you to everyone who came along

and made it a great day.

Library News

Congratulations to Zara Loechel for being the first YAS student to

complete this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge! Zara received two

books from the library as a gift to acknowledge her passion for

reading. Well done Zara. We encourage all students to participate in

the challenge and fill in their sheets. All class teachers have a sheet to

copy and you can also grab one from the library if yours is lost. The

challenge closes on September 3rd – so start reading!

YAS 7-12 Assessment Drafting Process

Students in Year 7-12 are expected to submit drafts for each of their summative tasks. Submission

of tasks is via Daymap and students are to upload drafts and final pieces of work to the

Assessment Task area.

Due dates for final submission are reflected on Daymap, and other dates, including draft due

dates are reflected on the task sheet attached to the task.

A draft due date is generally one week before the final submission date. A draft should be a

complete piece of work, done to the student's best ability. While handing up something is better

than not submitting anything, a completed draft is the expectation.

It is important that students submit their work for teachers to assess their progress and more

importantly to help guide them in the direction of achieving in the higher-level grade bands.

Neglecting to submit a final draft also sends up some red flags that they are not progressing with

their work and are unlikely to be able to submit a polished final copy by the due date.

Teachers at SACE level also have a legal obligation to verify student's work as their own. The

drafting process allows teachers to see progress on work completed and confidently verify to the

SACE Board.

Unless students have negotiated prior to the draft due date, teachers will email parents to let

them know when no draft has been submitted.

When a final task has not been submitted, a letter will be sent home.

Please note that parents of students in Years 7-12 can ask their child to log in to Daymap at any

time to see what is due.

If you have any concerns, please contact the child's subject teacher or Home Group teacher.

2020 SCHOOL YEAR BOOK

For anyone who missed out on purchasing a copy of the 2020 School

Year book last year – you are in luck.

There are a few copies still left that can be purchased from the front

office for $25.00 each.

Get in quick so you don’t miss out.

Sports Day

Thank you to all for what was a magical day! To all the students who came and participated, to

all the staff for their hard work, and to all the parents who came along and helped support the

children on the day on either events or at the canteen thank you! A special shout out goes to

Greg Butler for making YAS look amazing!

With 2021 being the first year with new houses, Dhadni and Yarda, the students embraced the

new culture and got into both their house colours, and spirit. A big congratulations to Dhadni for

taking home the trophy this year. Participation levels were great, a credit to all involved.
