Welcome Home

I t takes a lot of courage to step

onto the field. Suiting up, stepping forward, and standing ready for the ball don’t happen by accident, and they don’t happen without heart. In baseball, the batter steps into the box, looks at a pitch, and must decide whether or not to swing.

The goal is to hit, then to score. There’s opposition out there on the field trying to keep that from happening, but that’s why the team keeps swinging, keeps running, keeps working together. It all starts when a batter steps up and hits—and when there’s a team behind the hitter working to see that player safely home.

When we as followers of Jesus choose to step into the process of spiritual growth called discipleship, we recognize that it takes courage and teamwork. We can’t do it alone,

nor can we do it without swinging at a pitch.

This is an important season in the life of First United Methodist Church and in our life together as disciples. The Bible calls each of us to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 3:18). In fact, that’s a key theme verse for the Adult Discipleship Leadership Team (ADLT) in the work that we do every day. Many opportunities are available to you this season, and we encourage you to step in and swing with all your heart. You are not in this alone—there is a great team of other disciples all over the church that is committed to us all moving forward.

Disciple Bible Study is a great place to start. Take a look at pages 3 and 5 of this issue and try to make room for a life-changing connection to

Bible study, new friends, and the spiritual growth that can come from that powerful combination.

In addition to Disciple, new Sunday morning classes are beginning soon, and there is almost certainly a new or existing group that’s right for you: there will be 24 of them this fall! See the other resources included here also, and join in the very special life of discipleship that is thriving at FUMC. There is even a trip to the Holy Land coming in January 2012!

Disciple Bible Study Welcome to the 2011–2012 Season!

Growing Together as Disciples

D isciple Bible Study is about transformation that deepens our lives across the spectrum of Christian

discipleship. Disciple classes are 32 to 34-week experiences in which participants read and study the Bible in small, committed groups. The studies are for adults of all ages and experience levels, and they provide an excellent way to build or to build upon a biblical foundation for your faith.

The first class in the Disciple series, Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study, surveys both the Old and New Testaments over 34 weeks. In this course, you will deepen your awareness of the whole biblical story and have the opportunity to discuss and learn more about how God calls us to respond to that story today. This is the foundation class and is a prerequisite for the rest of the courses. Other Disciple classes focus on smaller sections of the Bible over the course of the year and may be taken in any order.

Each group (typically about 12 participants) is led by a trained facilitator who has not only the knowledge and experience to lead Disciple, but the heart to share in a journey of growth with others who want to know more about the Bible and its application to life.

Disciple is one of the strongest in-depth group Bible studies available and includes daily preparations of about 30-45 minutes, along with a weekly group study session of about two hours.

As we grow in knowledge by spending dedicated time in Bible study, we find greater meaning in our lives, deeper faith, and sharper priorities. And when we do Bible study in small group communities like Disciple, we develop lasting friendships as we pray, study, and grow together.

How to Navigate Your Bible A “Bible Retreat” for Adults Sept 18

Growing Together

O n September 18, a special tradition at First United Methodist Church

continues: our third-graders will receive Bibles as a gift from the church and as an investment in their growth as disciples. On that afternoon from 4:00-6:00 pm the Children’s Ministry will host the annual Bible Retreat for them—a great event to help the children learn their way around the Bible and to be encouraged to read, study, and use it regularly.

At the same time, the Adult Discipleship Leadership Team (ADLT) will sponsor an adult “Bible Retreat” in Room C200 for the parents of the third graders and for any adults who would like to join in. This will be a basic introduction to the Bible, how it came to be, and how it is organized. We’ll share some tips on learning to navigate your Bible, as well as some suggestions to get you started reading and studying it regularly on your own.

Many folks don’t know where to start or just need a few tips to help make their relationship to the Scriptures more practical and meaningful. This brief, basic session will be a fun and interesting introduction that can point you in some fruitful directions.

We’ll also talk briefly about some of the Bible translations and study Bibles that are out there to choose from. If you are intimidated by the volume of choices, this session might help the process become more manageable.

ADLT member Dr. Ron Bentley and Pastor John Harman will facilitate this informative time of fellowship and growth.

If you are new to First United Methodist Church, you’ll find the Join the Journey experience to be an opportunity to make a meaningful connection. It is especially designed to answer your questions about the Christian faith, the Methodist Church, and life in the church family. As you explore some basic topics in Christianity, Methodism, Bible study, and service and discipleship, you will get to connect with other newcomers and begin a journey of learning and spiritual growth together in this family of faith.

The weekly sessions are designed to inform and equip you to understand and respond to the biblical call to a life of

discipleship. We hope that every person in the church family has a regular place of connection where you can learn and grow in community. We

believe that Join the Journey will help you find a pathway to that connection that is right for you.

The current 12-week session runs through September at 10:05 a.m. in Room C210. You can join anytime, and since the class is on a quarterly cycle, just stick around into the next session so you can benefit from all the classes. Disciple Bible Study A Year of Transformation

What are the Disciple Courses? Disciple I: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study

This 34-week foundational class spends the fall in the Old Testament and the spring in the New. It takes you through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, prompting you along the way to consider the big picture and your own relationship and response to it. By reading more than 70% of the Bible yourself during

the year, you will understand and appreciate more deeply the grand story of God’s love and grace, and the hope of the Christian faith. Plan to invest 30-45 minutes a day plus the weekly group meeting time for any of the Disciple classes.

Disciple II: Into the Word, Into the World

This 32-week study encourages you to open yourself to hear what God has to say through the Bible and to be guided into your particular ministry in the world. The study selects specific portions of the Bible and goes more deeply into them. Equal attention is given to the Old and New Testaments, with concentration on four

books: Genesis, Exodus, Luke, and Acts (8 lessons on each book). Appropriate connections are made to other parts of the Bible, both through reading and study assignments and through the commentary in the study manual.

Disciple III: Remember Who You Are

This 32-week Bible study includes the Old Testament Prophets (from Isaiah to Malachi) and the New Testament letters of the Apostle Paul. It focuses on the connection between memory and identity for the people of God. Major themes include the call to remember, the call to repentance, the need for renewed

vision, and the place of community. Remember Who You Are understands Bible study as a call to turn our lives more and more toward God and encourages us to be a people who puts God first—a community of obedience.

Disciple IV: Under the Tree of Life

“Being a faithful community, we freely choose to be bound together as the people of God.” This is an example of one of the “Marks of Faithful Community” from this 32-week study. As the Writings of the Old Testament (like Ruth, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Daniel, and Chronicles, for example) and writings from the

Apostle John (the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelation) are read, you are constantly reminded that life lived in community, faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ, is the answer to the “human condition.”

Growing Together on Sunday Mornings

Credo A Class for Confirma on Parents

Parents of children in the coming year’s Confirmation Class will have a new op-portunity to connect, learn, and grow. It’s an adult Sunday school class called Cre-do, and it tracks week-to-week right along with the topics that the Confirma-tion students are discussing.

This allows parents to connect with other parents, to learn and grow as disciples themselves, and to be able to connect with their child about what they are learn-ing. By discussing and learning about the same subjects as their children each week, Credo helps parents to understand, to reinforce, and to have points of conver-sation about what it means to be in rela-tionship with God and to be part of a church family.

Many parents participate in rotating lead-ership in various parts of the Confirma-tion program, so the Credo experience is designed to accommodate come-and-go needs. We hope that all of the parents of our Confirmation Class can participate regularly because of the obvious benefits to families the class offers, but Credo is a good fit also for those who can only at-tend occasionally.

When Confirmation be-gins in late August, Credo will begin to meet weekly at 9:00 a.m. (the same hour as Confirmation Class). Plan to be a part of Credo this year. Stay tuned for details!

The Servant Class With the Sermon Scriptures through Lec o Divina

A re you looking for a Sunday School experience where you can explore the Bible in depth on a weekly basis? Maybe

one that can let the Holy Spirit be your guide? And enhance your sermon experience?

A few folks have been doing Sunday School in a focused and deep way that has been amazing in its results. They follow a study process called lectio divina, a timeless practice that goes back centuries in the history of the Church. This is a method of reading that helps and encourages us to open ourselves to the Word of God and to allow Scripture to speak to our hearts. The focus ultimately is on the

question, “If I really believe this passage of Scripture, how should my life be different as a result?” This is reading both meditatively and transformationally—in community.

This group puts a twist on it, however, by studying the biblical text used in the sermon each week. This is a powerful way for our worship to meet our discipleship and for us to grow deeper together.

If you would like to be part of a new Sunday school class that will use this approach to study as its model, the group will meet to form a class on Sunday, August 21 at 9:00 a.m. in Room A225. In the Beginning: Genesis 1-11 The Horizons Sunday Morning Bible Study Con nues

The Horizons Sunday morning Bible study meets at 11:10 a.m. in Room C200, and is studying Genesis 1–11. The great stories of creation, the Fall, the Flood, and the Tower of Babel are the focus of discussion as we explore what Scripture has to say about our origins and what we need to know about “in the beginning.”

Dr. Ron Bentley and Pastor John Harman facilitate this weekly study, and you are invited to join at any time. If you like the idea of a Sunday class at the 11:10 hour, this is a great opportunity to try it out!

Check out the Legacy Class in August and September

Are you looking for a Sunday School class just for women? Sisterhood may be the place for you! Join us on Sunday, September 11, to launch this new class and enjoy breakfast together as we get to know one another.

Our first study will be a 12-week series, Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World, which will begin on Sept. 18. Women of all ages and seasons of life are invited to gather and study God’s Word through this study.

Sisterhood’s format will be interactive, and most studies will have the option of purchasing a study guide, though not required. This fellowship will be a place for women to come and share life with other women in their church family, to lift up prayers for one another, and to feel the warmth of friendship across the generations.

Sisterhood A Sunday Morning Class for Women

We are excited to announce the gathering of a new Sunday morning group in the fall called Stepping Stones. This is the beginning of a new young adult class that will meet for the first time on Sunday morning, Sept. 11.

The goal of Stepping Stones is that adults ages 20-30 who are in various stages of transition in life—be it going to college, graduating and entering the workforce, or getting married and starting a family—will have a Sunday school class

to attend with others who are in these same life stages. Won’t that be great??

You will be hearing more about Stepping Stones as the fall season approaches. Church every week? Adult Sunday school is the church’s largest discipleship ministry and has much to offer for study, growth, and fellowship. Here’s a great place to connect:

The Legacy class meets at 10:05 a.m. in Room C205 and is currently in a study titled Doing Life Together. The focus of the study in August will be “Developing Your Shape to Serve Others,” which challenges us to

become servants in order to glorify Christ with our lives.

Legacy will follow this with a study that helps to equip us to share our life mission with others. Many are uncomfortable with sharing matters of faith with another, so this topic should be interesting, helpful, and reassuring when it comes to the biblical call to be real when it comes to our faith journeys.

Men’s Morning Bible Study Making Connec ons on Friday Mornings

On Friday mornings at 7:00, men gather at the church for coffee and Bible study together to start the day. The discussion study is led by volunteer members of the group and encourages interaction and fellowship as well as praying for needs that are shared. Typically, this large group studies through books of the Bible by reading and discussing a new short section each week.

This time of connection and study is open to all men and welcomes visitors and those who may only be able to attend occasionally. Stop by Room B110 (the Parlor) any Friday and discover why this morning study is so popular at FUMC!

Faith Connections Studying the Book of Revela on

The Faith Connections Sunday morning Bible study led by Pastor John Harman will resume its study of Revelation in September. This will be the final installment of the three-part series, First Things First, and will continue with the last major section of the book, Revelation 19–22.

A Journey to the Holy Land Christian Friends Following in the Path of Jesus (January 2012)

H ave you ever had the desire to go to the Holy Land? Follow in the path of Jesus and the Disciples. Touch

the ancient stones of the prison where Paul lived for several years. See the streets where Jesus performed miracles and sail on the Sea of Galilee. Or follow Jesus in his walk to Calvary and Resurrection!

An opportunity for First UMC to experience these inspiring moments in the Holy Land is coming January 16–25, 2012. We will have an amazing time.

Adult Discipleship Leadership Team (ADLT) member Tina Ripperger will lead the trip. Tina has visited the Holy Land and says of this upcoming journey, “I am so excited about this opportunity to take a group to the Holy Land. The Christian, Israeli-trained and certified tour guide will take us to Caesarea, Cana (where you can renew your wedding vows), Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, Jordan River, Dead Sea, Masada, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem.”

We will have an opportunity for baptism at the Jordan River for any who have not been baptized (and a special time to

celebrate the meaning of baptism at the river for us all). Pastor John Harman has agreed to accompany us as the spiritual leader for this group and to perform the renewal of wedding vows and baptisms.

One more highlight is an opportunity to worship with Christians in Bethlehem and then to separate into small groups for Sunday evening supper in their homes. What a wonderful way to connect and support our brothers and sisters in Christ who live permanently in the Holy Land.

Information sessions will be held in August. The deadline to reserve your spot on the trip is September 1. We have room for 30 friends to join us. Please contact Tina Ripperger ([email protected] or 214-498-4482) for more info.

The cost is $2539 per person plus an estimated fuel surcharge of $560 (est. total $3100). It includes air, hotel, tour services, breakfast and dinner each day, and one lunch. A deposit of $500 is due by September 1 to reserve your spot.

Personal Bible Reading Reading the Bible for Growth and Strength in 2011

S o, what happened next? The Israelites began to occupy the Promised Land in the Book of Joshua, but they ran into problems almost immediately. Being completely faithful, loyal, and obedient to the Lord was a challenge for them, just as

it is for all of us. Their choices often led them into difficult and chaotic times, but God continued to use those times to show his power and patient love for them—as well as his ability to work through their circumstances for their good (Judges and Ruth).

Judges ends with the refrain, “In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit” (21:25). They would eventually choose to demand a king, even though God was already their King. The stories of how this happened and how it turned out in the next generation is the subject of the Books of 1 and 2 Samuel. Read along each day, and be reminded of who the King of kings really is and how no human leader can ever take that place. You can get a copy of this reading schedule printed on a bookmark at the Information Desk in the main church lobby. Let’s read and grow together!
