DOVER -Many people know that

Dover was founded in 1623, and is the oldest continuous settle-ment in New Hampshire. People know that Dover added more residents between the 2000 and 2010 census than any other New Hampshire community. But do they know how many books were checked out of the Dover Public Library in 2013? Do they know how much paper was recycled in comparison to trash collected?

Beginning in 2013, this in-formation and more has been made available in one newsletter-style document. Dover’s depart-ment of Planning and Commu-nity Development has compiled statistics and demographic in-formation about the city and in January it began updating that

report. This community profile offers a glimpse into Dover’s population growth and other de-mographics, such as vital records, housing starts and ages, vehicle registrations, income and cultur-al and recreational activity. Also included is climate information, and general geographic informa-tion about Dover and southeast-ern New Hampshire.

The updated profile focuses on calendar year 2013, and in-cludes information about the 2013/2014 municipal budget. The profile is updated annually in January based upon data about the previous year. Christopher Parker, AICP, Dover’s Director of Planning and Community De-velopment assembled the docu-ment and believes it has many uses.

“I can see citizens using it to learn more about their communi-ty,” Parker said. “I also see people from outside of Dover who want to learn more about us, as they plan to relocate or are investigat-ing Dover as an option, using this resource to find out more about the community.”

Parker stresses the docu-ment is a good one source docu-ment for basic community infor-mation. “It is a foundation piece,” he said. “If you like what you read, you can then make calls or send emails to appropriate offices or departments to learn more about the city.”

The report, titled “Detail-ing Dover, Demographically,” is available on the City’s website, www.dover.nh.gov. For more in-formation, call 603-516-6008.

with intellectual disabilities are still prone to health problems, in-cluding obesity, cavities, hearing loss and bone loss.

To help address this area of need, SONH will once again offer the Healthy Athletes pro-gram to traditional and young athletes (ages 2-7) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Field House. Free oral, eye, hearing and general fit-ness screenings will be offered for athletes ages 8 and above and free oral and hearing screenings will include young athletes.

The team representing the Granite State at the 2014 Spe-cial Olympics USA Games in Mercer County, New Jersey next month will also be representing their skills in competition.

Results from the 2014 State Summer Games will be posted at www.sonh.org, or follow the action on Facebook (SpecialO-lympicsNH).

PORTSMOUTH -Historic New England is

pleased to announce that special selections from Drawing Toward Home: Designs for Domestic Ar-chitecture are on view at Gover-nor John Langdon House from June 6 to October 12.

Nearly two hundred years of residential design – from the late eighteenth through the twentieth centuries is explored in Drawing Toward Home. These original drawings, from Historic New England’s rich collection, depict an array of domestic building types – from estates and modest single-family houses to summer cottages and

multi-family dwellings, includ-ing work from renowned archi-tectural offices such as McKim, Mead & White; Peabody & Stea-rns; and Little & Browne, as well as lesser-known architects.

The drawings document the development of the archi-tectural profession in America and illustrate changes in taste and technology, and many of the drawings are presented as works of art. Drawing Toward Home includes designs in Federal, Victorian, Arts and Crafts, and Modern styles. There is a wide scope of architectural drawings and landscape designs; there is even a proposal for an elaborate

‘70s dance music. The band has a busy schedule this summer. They will be playing every Tues-day evening at the Ashworth Hotel on Hampton Beach as well as many other venues in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine. Information about Black Agnes is available at blackagnes-band.com.

Besides Dunbar, the band includes Nico Zottos of Epping on bass, Brian Finnell also of Hampton as drummer, and Collin Garcia of Strafford on guitar, mandolin, violin and saxophone. Dunbar is the band’s front man and singer. He plays acoustic and electric guitar, and keyboard. Dunbar, Zottos and Finnell graduated from Sacred Heart School in Hampton. All four band members graduated

Quartets. These works, among the last Eliot wrote, ponder life and spirituality. Eliot wove through the poems the four ele-ments of earth, water, wind and fire. He also included allusions to the four seasons. Dunbar ex-plained in his grant proposal that he will do the same.

The album’s title song is ‘Mason Jar of Home’ an upbeat and engaging work about con-nections and roots. It was influ-enced by the Mason jar of soil from Hampton that Dunbar

keeps on his desk in his dorm room. The song includes the ele-ment of earth and the season of autumn.

Dunbar’s album will be re-corded this summer at Rocking Horse Studios in Pittsfield, NH and CDs will be available at Bull-moose Records in Portsmouth. Electronic downloads can be ob-tained at iTunes, Amazon, and Spotify.

Black Agnes has a well-deserved reputation for provid-ing a fun night of 1960s and

from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover, where they were the school’s house band.

Dunbar is a double major at Holy Cross in English and Music, with a minor in Catholic Studies. He is in the college’s Honors Pro-gram, the English Department’s Honor Program, and the English Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta. He will graduate in 2015.

HAMPTON -On Thursday May 29, at 7

p.m., the Lane Library, in Hamp-ton, is hosting a jazz concert fea-turing Hampton’s own Barbara London on flute, keyboard, and vocals, with bassist Jim Lyden and drummer Gary Gemmiti. The trio will play selections from Barbara’s new recording, Moon-light, as well as favorite jazz stan-dards. There will be a chance to meet the artists and a Q & A op-portunity. Barbara’s new CD and watercolor cards will be on dis-play and available. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information please contact Amanda Reynolds Cooper at the library, (603) 926-3368.

Barbara London is an award-winning flutist, compos-er, pianist, vocalist, artist, and educator. Recipient of three Na-tional Endowment for the Arts jazz performance grants, she has performed across the country and abroad and produced eight recordings of original composi-tions on her wild aster label. She taught in the Harmony Depart-ment at Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1986-2005 be-coming the first female chair in 1994.

Jim Lyden studied with both classical and jazz bassists. He gained experience by playing throughout northern New Eng-land with blues, funk, rock, and jazz musicians including Tiger

Okoshi, Herb Pomeroy, Oliver Lake, and Frank Foster. He currently performs with Curtis Clark, Thomas Snow, The East Enders, Barbara London, Dos Eckes, Saco River Theatre, and the Portland Stage Company.

Gary Gemmiti studied with the late world-renowned Alan Dawson. Comfortable in a variety of styles, Gemmiti has worked with well-known New England artists including the Spectras, Cormac McCarthy, Cari Coltrane, and blues great Mighty Sam McClain. He cur-rently tours and records with The Rustic Overtones and Royal Hammer. Along with Jim Lyden, Gary has enjoyed an extended jazz residency at the Press Room in Portsmouth with Larry Gar-land’s River City Jazz.

London’s new record-ing, ‘Moonlight’, is a collection of her chamber jazz tunes and songs performed with a healthy amount of swing, improv, and exploration. It was recorded at Thundering Sky Studios with engineer Chris Magruder, Origi-nally with an ear to recording a larger jazz group, it became in-creasingly apparent to Barbara that a trio is logistically easier...and often just as fun.

For more information, visit www.wildaster.com or www.hampton.lib.nh.us, or call Lane Memorial Library at 603-926-3368.

PORTSMOUTH -Federal resources for facil-

ity construction at Pease were included in the FY 2015 Mili-tary Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies funding bill. The provisions were cleared by the full Senate Ap-propriations Committee and will fund the development of major construction projects for the next generation KC-46A air refueling tankers to be housed at Pease, pending a successful completion of the environmental impact

study. The Air Force project at Pease is estimated to create 100 jobs and invest millions in New Hampshire’s economy.

“The development of the KC-46A project is important for our national security, Pease Air National Guard Base, and New Hampshire’s economy as a whole,” U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) said. “The facility construction resources included will help prepare the base for the new aircraft and will move the project forward.”

The appropriations bill, ap-proved by the committee, will specifically support three facility construction projects at Pease, which was selected as the first Air National Guard unit to receive the next generation KC-46A air refueling tanker to replace the current fleet of 1950s era KC-135s. Earlier this week, Shaheen and U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) authorized funding to support the project’s develop-ment in this year’s consideration of the Defense Authorization

the full Appropriations Commit-tee also includes other provisions that will help reduce the veterans’ disability claims backlog and im-prove the functioning and access of Veterans Affairs veterans sup-port programs and health care.

Appropriations Bill Clears Committee With Pease Investmentsbill during their Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support markup of the legislation.

Free Yourself from Cycle of Emotional InvestingIn many areas of

your life, you’re prob-ably aware that it’s useful

to keep emotions out of your decision-making — and that’s certainly the case with invest-ing. However, it can be diffi-cult to keep your feelings from influencing your investment decisions. But you may find it easier to invest with your head, rather than your heart, if you know a little something about two different cycles: the market cycle and your emo-tional cycle.

Let’s start with the market cycle. If you’ve been investing for a while, you’re aware (probably highly aware) that the financial markets are rarely static — they are always moving up and down, at least in the short term. (Over the very long term, a period of many decades, the markets have trended up.) But these short-term movements, while perhaps appearing as “zigs” and “zags” on a daily basis, actually form a pattern, or a

cycle, that can last for months or years. These cycles are known as bull (up) or bear (down) mar-kets. Going back to the Great Depression, the average bear market has lasted 21 months, while the average bull market has extended for 57 months, ac-cording to research from Stan-dard and Poor’s Index Services.

These market cycles great-ly influence investors’ attitudes and behavior. In fact, they lead to the formation of investors’ emotional cycles. During bull markets, investors tend to feel optimism, excitement and even euphoria. But once a bull market ends and a bear market begins, investors start getting nervous. And the longer and deeper the bear market, the greater the depth of emotion felt by inves-tors. These emotions can begin as anxiety and then progress to denial, fear, desperation and panic.

Furthermore, market cycles and emotional cycles don’t really align. For example, investors may well experience

euphoria when the market has reached its high point and a bear market has just begun. For a while, then, these investors, fueled by their euphoric feel-ings over the big gains they’ve achieved, may continue pour-ing money into the market, even as it’s declining. This type of behavior, though, is prob-ably better suited for when the market is already at a low, when investors’ dollars will buy more shares. Conversely, inves-tors may reach the peak of their fearfulness at the end of a bear market, just when things are about to turn around. At this point, their fear may hold them back from investing — even though, with prices low, it can be a good time to invest. Clear-ly, basing investment decisions on emotions can lead to poor choices.

So don’t get caught up in this pattern. Instead, strive to follow a disciplined approach to investing. Build an investment portfolio that reflects your ob-jectives, risk tolerance and time

horizon, and seek to hold appro-priate investments for the long term. Of course, you may well need to make adjustments along the way, but do it for the right reasons — such as a change in your goals or in the investments themselves — rather than as a reaction to the current market cycle.

Our emotions are pow-erful, and their power can in-crease when applied to such a meaningful aspect of our life as our finances. But if you can detach yourself, as much as pos-sible, from the emotional cycle of investing, you can avoid

considerable angst — while helping clear the path to pursue your goals.
