Program Outcomes:

Dear Parents,Girl Scouting and Girl Scout Camps exist for one reason: to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Girl Scout Camp is a great place for a girl to unlock her potential with the support and guidance of our caring staff. Your daughter will grow by leading her peers, voicing her opinions, and learning to make good choices. Age-appropriate activities allow campers to discover their strengths and ideals; connect with other girls and caring adults; and take action by doing their part for a common good. The girl-led, cooperative experiences of Girl Scout Camp create the perfect setting for developing leaders.

Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan invites you to share your summer with us! Our well-established camps have joined together to offer the best-of-the-best programs to girls in Michigan and beyond.

For 2011, you will find: • Our secure online registration program saves you time. Your online registration

confirms your spot in the selected program/session. No waiting to see if you’ve been placed! If you are able to register online, we strongly encourage you to do so! You can make payments by check or credit card using this system.

• A tiered pricing system allows you to pay based on what your family can afford. Financial assistance is still available and the application form is built in to the online registration process.

• Free-choice activities and optional add-on activities at Camp Hawthorn Hollow allow girls to customize their experience based on their individual interests.

• Age-specific specialty programs in horseback riding (grades 1-11) and adventure activities (grades 5-11) at Camp Innisfree makes every camp experience unique.

We know you have lots of choices and priorities when it comes to deciding how to spend your time and money this summer. We hope that a session at a Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan camp tops your list. It’s worth it!! And, perhaps we haven’t mentioned it yet, but it’s FUN! How can you top that??

DIveRSITy AnD OPen ADMISSIOnAs an organization, we are especially committed to bringing people from diverse cultures and backgrounds together and believe that our programs are tremendously enriched by a variety of cultural influences. Procedures for acceptance and participation in the programs at all camps are open to everyone without regard to race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, or ability (where reasonable accommodation can be made). Non-Girl Scouts, including former Girl Scouts, are welcome at any of our camps. An additional $12 fee applies to non-Girl Scouts, payable with registration deposit.

ACCReDITATIOn AnD LICenSInGOur camps are accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA), which sets forth 400 standards for quality and safety. For more information including resources for parents please visit the ACA online. Camps are also licensed by the State of Michigan Department of Human Services.

THe STAFFOur staff members are carefully selected and are hired based on maturity, experience with children, specific skills or competencies, and enthusiasm for sharing the out-of-doors with campers. After careful screening, which includes a background check, our staff participates in an intensive training program. At minimum, each staff member is certified in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR. Your camper will have at least two adult counselors assigned to work with her and the rest of her group. All of the counselors who stay in the living units with the girls are female.

PROGRAM QuALIFICATIOnSProgram descriptions include a grade-level range. Programs are designed for the developmental needs of that specific grade range. The grades listed indicate eligibility at a girl’s grade level for the current school-year. Please note any program experience or equipment prerequisites before making your selections. We reserve the right to transfer your child to a different program if it is discovered that there is a program better suited to her skills or abilities to increase her success at camp. Parents will be consulted about any potential changes in placement.

SIGnInG uP WITH A FRIenDCampers may request to be placed with one friend or “buddy.” Don’t forget that buddies must sign up for the same camp, session, and program! Both girls should include each other’s names on registration forms. Our online registration system does not reserve space for a buddy, so make sure there’s no delay between registrations!

WeATHeR-ReLATeD CHAnGeS TO PROGRAMMInGGSSEM reserves the right to alter scheduled activities due to weather conditions. Alternate options will be offered to replace an activity cancelled due to weather. Our primary concern is your daughter’s safety, but every effort will be made to reschedule activities. NO refunds or alteration in fees will be made.

BeHAvIOR PHILOSOPHy/POLICyThe camp staff strives to enforce a positive camper behavior policy, where clear rules and expectations for acceptable behavior set the tone for the session. Any girl that exhibits unsafe and/or unacceptable behavior or endangers other girls, staff, property or herself will be sent home. Parents, guardians, or emergency contacts will be notified and are responsible for picking up campers immediately from camp. Refunds, partial refunds, or transfers will NOT be issued.

Tiered Pricing StructureBecause families have different abilities to pay for summer camp programs, a voluntary tiered pricing system has been designed for GSSEM 2011 Camp Fees.  The fee you pay for each camp session in no way influences the experience and care your camper will receive. Rate B is not financial aid. Financial aid is available for families in need to help with the cost of summer camp.

Rate A reflects the actual costs to us, to provide a camp experience to your daughter. Please pay this amount.

Rate B is heavily subsidized by GSSEM product sales and fundraising campaigns and is for those families that cannot afford the full cost of camp but are willing/able to pay a significant portion of the cost. This rate corresponds with traditional Girl Scout Camp fees. Those selecting Rate B may also apply for additional Financial Assistance during registration.

Why Price Options?Camp experiences benefit girls! GSSEM is committed to providing only the highest-quality experiences to girls. To do so, we must ask the girls attending summer camp to pay their share of what it costs to keep those opportunities available. Camp is only part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, yet nearly 20% of the Council’s operating budget is spent to support the 5% of the membership that attends summer camp.

This limits what we have available to support other aspects of Girl Scouting. GSSEM subsidizes summer camp fees and facility expenses year-round. These expenses include:• Property insurance, utilities, septic tank pumping, and

water, fire and safety inspections.• Building and grounds upkeep, such as mowing the lawn, maintaining and fixing

buildings/structures and site management.• Supply expenses for all the things needed to operate, everything from garbage bags

to toilet paper and paper towels, and so much more.• Program expenses, like staffing, supplies, equipment, food, and transportation.• Care of horses and other farm animals, including feed, veterinary care, and barn

staff.

CAMP HAWTHORn HOLLOW BASICSCamp Hawthorn Hollow offers summer programs that develop courage, confidence, and character through the power of FUN! With emphasis on girl choice, programs focus on developing independence, social skill development, an appreciation of nature, and developing the leader within through fun and friendship. Girls get the attention they need in a safe, healthy environment, with an adult to camper ratio of 1:6 for campers age eight and under, and 1:8 for campers nine and older. Teen campers are supervised with a 1:10 ratio.

All campers live in modern lodges or villages grouped by grade level, with younger girl programs being housed primarily in the lodges. They are supervised by adult female counselors who go through an intensive two-week training program and hold at least the minimum requirements of CPR and First Aid. Certified staff operate program areas such as the challenge course, archery, and swimming. While all sessions offer opportunities for campfires, sing-a-longs, hiking, skits, and participation in special themed events, girls have the opportunity to participate in a variety of programs either by choosing their own schedules individually or by participating together as a cabin group. Each session is unique and focused on the developmental needs of the girls.

Join us at our summer camp Open House, Sunday May 15, 2011 from 2-4pm. Tour the facilities, meet the staff, and participate in hands-on activities.

CAMP InnISFRee BASICSCamp Innisfree is located between Howell and Pinckney, Michigan. Set on 995 wooded acres with a sports field, challenge course/program, and an excellent equestrian center. Lakefront activities include swimming, kayaking, canoeing, rowing, fishing, and playing on the ‘iceberg’. Camp Innisfree provides an excellent location for Summer Camps and other activities throughout the year.

Girls staying overnight will either be housed in troop houses or platform cabins. Each unit will be with girls of the same age level however some will be in different programs. Troop Houses have bunk beds, flush toilets, individual showers, and electricity. Meals are served in the dining hall. Platform cabins are more rustic, using latrine-type restrooms and without electricity. Each group will be guided and supported by a team of summer camp staff. Most meals are served in our dining hall with at least one meal cooked over the campfire in their unit.

Innisfree Equestrian Center is found on the north end of Camp Innisfree. The Equestrian Center features an indoor arena, two outdoor arenas, a farm animal barn, main stable, and a classroom designed to bring animals inside. Horses are owned by Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan and the equestrian center offers lessons all year long. This gives our staff an excellent opportunity to know the horses well.

are for girls with at least one week previous riding

experience at camp or equivalent lessons.

LeVeL III PROGRAMS

are for girls with at least two weeks previous riding experience at camp or equivalent

experience.

If girls ride only once per year, it is perfectly appropriate to repeat

a level in consecutive years!  Each session of riders is

divided by skill level so that instruction can be

tailored to the needs of the smaller group.
