The New Hope Historical Society

Exploration. Inspiration. A sense of history. Community.

All these ideals and more represent the mission of the New HopeHistorical Society. Founded in 1958, the NHHS now comprisesmore than 500 members, and is headquartered in the Benjamin Parry Mansion, home to this “Father of New Hope” and located in the heart of the historic district.

The Society’s goals are to inspire people to explore New Hope’spast, understand its present, and envision an even better future. Its members and supporters keep New Hope’s rich history alivethrough a variety of community activities and educational eventsthroughout the year - a history that extends from its role in the American Revolution to the world class artists, actors and writers of today.

The NHHS has contributed in many ways to the preservation and historic awareness of the community. Among other activities, the society provided funds for the desperately needed restoration of the New Hope Cemetery, final resting place for many of the town’s earliest inhabitants. It created the Ferry Street Landing Park and contributed to its restoration in 2004. In 2006, the Society installed ten historical site markers around town to inform the entire community of the historical context of the town in which we live, work and play.

We look back over the more than 50 years of the Society with great pride and a sense of accomplishment, and look forward to a future that continues to enhance the legacy of our wonderful community! The Annual Garden Tour is our major fund raising event that allows us to accomplish this mission.

Annual Garden Tour

The New Hope Historical Society’s “Townand Country” Garden Tour was founded in1993. Six gardens were chosen in NewHope Borough as well as SoleburyTownship and approximately 100 peopletook the first self-guided tour. As the yearswent by, attendance grew and it becameour largest annual fundraising event, recruiting hundreds of willing communityvolunteers generously giving their time. Tomake it more successful, the societyneeded a budget for advertising, signage, etc. and this required soliciting forsponsorship. Many businesses and private members of the community were quick to meet ourchallenge and serious monies started to be raised. The popularity of the tour flourished and wenow entertain up to 1000 visitors per year.

How are the monies used? For a number of years a portion of theproceeds went into the long needed and expensive preservation of theParry Mansion.

However, early on, it allowed the society to restore the New HopeCemetery, create the Ferry Street Landing Park, move the New HopeIvyland Railroad Station to its present location, and install historicalsite markers around the town.

The success of the garden tour further enables us to train and employdocents to give historic tours of the Parry Mansion with no admissionfee. Today we host 50-175 visitors on each Saturday and Sunday. The

Society also established the Francis Curley Memorial Scholarship in 2003 to be awarded to acivic-minded New Hope-Solebury High School senior who has displayed excellence in socialstudies and intends to pursue a formal education in social sciences. The scholarship honors oneof New Hope’s most dedicated historians, Francis Curley for his many outstanding contributionsthat fostered a greater public appreciation for New Hope's unique history.

The New Hope Historical Society is a 501 (c)3 and your contribution can provide a tax deductionfor you or your company. Financial support of this event will help us continue our work in thecommunity and preserve our past for generations to come.

REAL ESTATE

What I Love | James Gager and Richard Ferretti A creative couple didn’t just renovate a country place in Pennsylvania. They art-directed it.

Art-Directing a Garden in Bucks CountyJune 4, 2015By DAN SHAW

Memorial Day weekend was a working holiday this year for Richard Ferretti and James Gager. Coltsfoot Farm, their place in Bucks County, Pa., was opening to the public on June 6, for a garden tourto benefit the New Hope Historical Society and they were busy grooming it.

As part of their preparations, the Manhattan couple were meeting with the tour organizers, who were planning to set up booths selling books, plants and snacks in the 19th-century barn. That was fine with Mr. Ferretti, the global creative director of Estée Lauder, and Mr. Gager, the global creative director forMAC Cosmetics and Jo Malone. But for obvious reasons, they insisted on overseeing the merchandising.

“We want everything to reflect our style,” Mr. Ferretti, 53, said. “We told them they could absolutely not sell kettle corn.”

Style is a bond he and Mr. Gager, 70, have shared since they met 25 years ago. (They married in 2011.) That is evident in every inch of the painstakingly and zealously landscaped six-acre Doylestown property, which is surrounded by 102 acres of woodlands and farmland preserved by the Natural LandsTrust.

“We don’t exactly know how to relax,” Mr. Ferretti said. “But this is as close as we get.”

The couple are latecomers to gardening. Twelve years ago, on a weekend trip to visit friends, they weretaken with the natural beauty of Bucks County and bought their first country place, a 19th-century stone house on two acres.
