8 HOME DECOR AND RENOVATIONS NOVEMBER 2014
I LOVE TO THROW PARTIES. In fact, last month, I threw two! One was a Mexican themed goodbye fiesta for two dear friends and their baby, and the other an outdoor harvest-inspired 40th anniversary party for my parents. Two large celebrations in one month is ambitious, but I relied on plenty of help to make sure everything went off without a hitch. Choosing a theme for each fête also helped immensely, as party-planning options can be overwhelming at the best of times!
Are you in full party-planning mode? Tis the season! We are thrilled to have designer, blogger and TV personality Jillian Harris as the subject of our cover feature this month. As a fan of this Canadian talent (and former Bachelorette!), I look to her fabulous lifestyle site jillianharris.com for stylish vision when planning my own soirées. For this issue, she offers some amazing entertaining tips, on page 28. One of my favourite tidbits from Harris is about enjoying the party you throw. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? But it is so easy to get caught up in hosting duties that you forget to really enjoy yourself.
Speaking of hosting duties, there really is an art to being a great host. We turn to author and etiquette consultant Peggy Post, great-granddaughter-in-law to the famous American etiquette expert Emily Post. She lists 10 ways to keep calm, cool and collected come party time.
Through out this issue, you will notice our Great Gift 2014 icon – in place to help inspire creative and personalized gift giving. And as the cooler weather sets in, we snuggle up with great winter home trends from designer Yanic Simard on page 30, and Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan’s rustic cottage makeover on page 38.
We hope you take time during this busy season to enjoy the issue!

Dress up your home with
Arrow Furniture
DON’T LET HIGH PRICES HOLD YOU BACK FROM purchasing the furniture pieces you need to spruce up your home! Whether you’re looking for something delightfully quirky or elegantly traditional, Arrow Furniture provides high-end quality furniture pieces without the high-end prices. The family owned and operated business has been servicing the Greater Toronto Area since 1969. Now, more than 45 years later, the company has expanded to include four locations across Toronto: North York, Scarborough, Mississauga and Brampton.
The moment you walk through the doors, you are amazingly met with a wide range of products
including sofas, tables, dining and bedroom sets, and an assortment of beautiful accessories. The company is committed to moving beyond the stereotypical shopping experience to ensure their customers have the “Arrow Furniture Experience,” which also includes remarkable service not only before your purchase, but after the sale as well. All products come with a minimum one-year warranty and if you do happen to experience any issues, Arrow Furniture will take care of it in the most timely fashion possible.
Before committing to any piece of furniture, Arrow Furniture also offers in-home consultations with an experienced designer. During their visit, they will take measurements, photographs and inspect your home for architectural and stylistic features. The designer will then present you with their professional ideas for your home. Once you’re happy with the design, your furniture will be delivered within the timeframe discussed with your designer, based on occupancy and/or item availability.
So, how is it that Arrow Furniture is able to provide such competitive prices? According to Jason Michaels, Sales manager of Arrow Furniture, “There are so many stores that use a ‘smoke and mirrors’ strategy. They jack up their prices and give 10 to 50 per cent off and fool so many customers into thinking they have received a great deal. The biggest thing that someone has to know about Arrow Furniture is that our prices are real. We don’t increase our prices 10 to 50 per cent just so we can give large discounts. When we have a sale, it’s a real sale. We put the best possible pricing on the furniture - for our customers - all of the time. We care too much about our integrity to do it any other way.”
If you’re looking to revitalize your home, visit Arrow Furniture’s website

including sofas, tables, dining and bedroom sets, and an assortment of beautiful accessories.

We all know that cutting boards are essential to kitchen prep. But an emerging trend is taking these cutting boards from the kitchen to the table by using them as a beautiful neutral backdrop to display creative apps, such as the ever popular charcuterie board – a party favourite. We adore these customized cutting boards from Knotty’s Woodwork, which are locally sourced and hand-crafted in Canada.

INVITE CLEARLY Include necessary information for your guests in the invitation, such as where the event will be held, what time and dress code required.
THE LISTPreparing your guest list carefully is key to a successful party. Creating a congenial guest list ensures a comfortable and enjoyable evening for all.
KEEP CALM AND PLAN ONSet your menu ahead of time, ensuring you’ve checked all of your guests’ dietary restrictions and you have enough food for the entire evening.
EXCEPT OFFERS OF HELP Throwing a party can be enjoyable, especially if you approach it with simplicity. If someone offers to bring something, look at your menu and ask accordingly.
WATCH THE CLOCK Expect guests to arrive on time and plan to be ready 15 minutes ahead of time so that you can warmly welcome them. This includes having your table set, bar stocked and bathrooms ready with extra tissue and essentials.
Peggy Post, great-granddaughter-in-law to the famous American etiquette writer Emily Post, shares her top tips for entertaining
with style and grace during this busy season.
HOSTING101
TO BE THE
10 WAYS
by SARA DUCK
perfect party host
THE SPARK As host, you set the tone for making your guests feel comfortable and welcome. Make sure to circulate the room, introduce guests to each other, engage in interesting conversation. No talk of politics, please!
BE ATTUNED TO GUESTS’ COMFORTWhen it comes to your guests,’ be on the pulse to their needs. Offer seconds to those who may be a little shy to ask for more and look out for wallfl owers shying away from conversations.
FLEXIBLE AND GRACIOUSYour souffl é falls. Or one friend arrives with an unexpected guest. The ruined dessert? Have a fallback. The uninvited guest? As discourteous as it is for someone to spring a surprise on you, be gracious. No polite host would ever send an uninvited guest packing.
START THE MEAL GRACEFULLY Signal when guests can start the meal, you may need to fi nish off the last details in the kitchen and don’t want the food to get cold. Give a welcome speech and tell everyone to start.
SHOW APPRECIATION Thank people for coming as you bid them goodbye. And don’t forget to thank anyone who brought you a gift.

10 WAYS

perfect party host

IN TOWN TO PROMOTE LG’S COOL NEW
DOOR-IN-DOOR REFRIGERATOR, designer, blogger and TV star Jillian Harris shares some of her inspiring entertaining tips – causing a serious fangirl moment along the way.

Tell us about your partnership with LGJ: LG approached me about six months ago to be the ambassador for its new door-in-door refrigerator. Given my love of design, food and entertaining, it seemed like the perfect fit. The refrigerator is amazing for entertaining; it can act as a beverage centre, where guests can help themselves!
When it comes to kitchen essentials, what is your favourite item?J: For a bit of luxury, I would say a wine fridge. I pretty much bought my house because it came with one. I also think a great big kitchen island is so important for everyday cooking, as well as entertaining.
Describe your dream kitchen styleJ: All white with some gritty elements, such as exposed beam, an industrial chandelier, large windows and open shelving. Oh, and a few French baguettes in a basket on the counter!
If you could cook with anyone, who would it be?J: My grandmother, she is my muse. We cook together all the time, and she is so inspiring.
You love to entertain and throw beautiful, inspiring parties. What are your top entertaining tips?1. Making food ahead of time – it is a huge sanity saver. 2. Use rental companies for tables, chairs, glassware,
utensils and linens – it is a lot less expensive than people realize.
3. Being present in the moment. I can spend so much time preparing and hosting the party, that sometimes I forget to enjoy it. Do your hosting, and then be resolved to enjoy yourself, too!
Where do you look for inspiration when planning a party?J: I love to look at my cousin Tori’s blog, fraichenutrition.com – she’s a dietitian and an incredible cook, she inspires me with her euro-rustic approach to food, which I love. And, in terms of decor, I look to Monika Hibbs. She has beautiful style.
What do you love most about entertaining?J: I love to treat people. I love having guests come over and serving them the best food I can make, putting on the best party I can. I want people to leave having had a really great time. That makes me really happy.
How can you use existing decor to make a party hosted at home, comfortable and stylish?J: Using your kitchen island as a serving station or buffet is a great idea. Bring your indoor furniture outdoors, and create an interesting set-up to stage your food (weather pending of course!).
What are the top entertaining trends this season?J: For decor, an all white palette is still big this year but mixed with rustic elements and metals, such as serving food on an antique cutting board. And for food, the mini trend (think one-bite apps) is still going strong!
You are known for your fabulous sense of style. How do you like to dress when you entertain?J: When I throw parties, I usually pick a theme and get everyone to dress accordingly – which makes for great, fun photos.

1/Layering fabrics isn’t just for furniture; rugs can look amazing layered too. I love adding a cowhide rug to tie together unusual furniture arrangements or punctuate the centre of a space. A sheepskin style rug also makes a stylish accent to areas such as the edge of the bed, under a footstool, or even draped over a chair or barstool for a softer seat.
TIP: Layer rugs like crazy to get a patchwork quilt look that adds huge drama – mix five to seven smaller rugs in one room (look to CB2 photo above for inspiration) Or, use carpet tiles to fake a large rug under your existing one, and fill in the edges of a room.
When the cool weather comes around, the
wardrobe advice is always the same: dress in
layers! Well, this practical idea isn’t just smart
for outdoors – it works for your home, too.

2/Copper, gold and brass are hot in more ways than one – they bring a classic yet trendy style and warm undertone, without feeling like a strong colour. If you’re timid (or already invested in silver), start small by layering these metals in with accents such as frames, tableware and lamps. The mix of silver and gold hues creates a subtle Art Deco inspired vibe, so there’s no reason not to sprinkle one in, while letting the other dominate.
TIP: Bronze tealight votives reflect an extra-warm glow. Line up three, five or seven (odd numbers tend to work best) on a silvery tray or cart for a contrast statement and sparkling mood-lighting. Bronze Rose Tealight Holder. $20. Visit YSSelected.com
3/Pillows are one of my favourite ways to add style – they can move from living room to bedroom and beyond, and dress up or down a room. Rather than picking dramatic new colours, grab some neutral but bold patterns that can layer behind your existing favourites for a more filled-in feel.
TIP: For my YSS collection, I wanted a dash of liveable safari style, so I tamed a tiger print pillow in a warm tan and winter-white. An animal print like this adds unexpected drama standing alone on your dining chairs, or slinking between the sofa cushions. Safari Tiger Print Crewel Embroidered Square Cushion. $100. Visit YSSelected.com
4/Lush textures are great for adding warmth to the eye and the hand. A sumptuous grey blanket works folded neatly at the end of a bed, tossed casually on a sofa – pretty much anywhere you want to add some luxury (so it can move between rooms for new looks).
TIP: Spread a blanket across the cushions of a sofa, tuck in at the edges, for a noncommittal contrast-upholstery look - I do this at home all the time!
5/Don’t forget the vertical surfaces! An extra layer of drapery helps avoid heat loss through windows, so consider mixing a sheer layer with a heavy blackout-lined layer – you can keep your existing curtains and add a double rod.
TIP: A lightly patterned inner sheer (try a tone-on-tone white) under a solid heavy drape, draws the eye’s attention to the layered effect by adding drama to the background instead of the foreground.

I AM A BIG BELIEVER THAT DECORATING for the holidays should be fun and simple. This table took me 20 minutes to set up and was made up of items I had mainly in storage. For a modern take on table decor here are my favourite tips.
START WITH A MODERN COLOUR PALETTE
Especially in an urban setting, a modern colour palette can be really fun to experiment with at the holidays. I chose to go with various shades of purple, using ribbon and various sized ornaments loosely strewn on the table. There is a
regal nature to purple that is very fitting to the holidays. Other fun combinations to try include shades of navy and teal.

Almost everything on the table I had in storage. A decorative candy dish was instantly made into holiday decor by placing small ornaments in lieu of sweets. A large glass floral vase filled with ornaments adds

instant glamour and height to the tablescape. Candle-holders, which I use year- round, add a lovely shimmer and glow so essential for a holiday party. Spools of ribbon that I had in storage can easily be re-used to wrap a gift after my party. Especially in a small space where storage is at a premium, being able to use items beyond a holiday context is a great strategy to maximize space.
LAYER AND VARY YOUR HEIGHTS & TEXTURES
What makes a tablescape most interesting, holiday or non-holiday, is variety in texture and height. In this setting, I used flowers in a casual arrangement with leafy greens adding lots of height. The scale of the large Christmas balls provides great contrast and the entire arrangement is grounded by loosely strewn ribbon. I love the contrast of the glittery ornaments against the natural texture of the ribbons. Mixing your heights and textures keeps the entire spread visually interesting and sets a glamorous backdrop for your guests.
HAVE FUN
The holidays are a fun time to be whimsical. I picked up these adorable cocktail napkins in the check-out aisle on a recent client shopping trip. While I might not use these for the day-to-day, a little bit of humour and whimsy at the holidays is always appropriate.

If you could design a space for a famous person (past or present), who would it be?I am a very big fan of Pharrell Williams and would love to work with him.
What exciting new projects do you have on the horizons?I am very excited for my new projects coming up in India and Beijing. And the continuing new additions to my kellyhoppen.com

Learn a lotFROM THE
SCOTSFresh from taking on a rustic cabin in Ontario, we catch up with Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan to ask them a few important questions about
everything from design casualties to design influences.
1 You’ve been credited with introducing laminate
flooring to the UK, what do you think the next
revolutionary material for interior design will be?
Our big thing at the moment is glass, glass and more glass – we’re currently renovating a cottage in Haliburton, Ontario, and removing the rear walls of two bedrooms and replacing them with floor-to-ceiling glazed sections. It’s all about connectivity to the great outdoors.
2 You quite famously spent time restoring and
upgrading a Muskoka cottage on your show
“Cabin Pressure” on Cottage Life network. Did
you actually get a chance to sit back and relax in
the cottage?
Yikes – there’s no chance of relaxation as we’ve just bought another cottage (the Haliburton one in the previous answer) to film season two! Double yikes! This time we’re on our own – just two wee Scots in a collapsing cabin so in need, we call it the ‘slanty shanty.’
3 Is there any design in particular that either of
you look back on with regret? What do you think
are some of the design principles that you’ve
learned as a result of designs that didn’t really
work out?
Now there’s a question. We once added a wall of sawn birch branches from the floor to the ceiling of a small, city home (it was our ‘bringing the outdoors in’ phase) and was perhaps just a step too far!
038-039 Justin&Colin Learn from Scots _VB.indd 38 2014-10-14 4:16 PM
Here are some tips we’ve learned over the years:› Design can influence your
home, so make decisions based on creating pleasure for both parties.
› Share in the decision process. Communication is key, if you can share a life, you can share a sofa decision!
› Provide for each party – good lighting and bedside tables on both sides of the bed.
› Incorporate each other’s tastes. Look at home decor like a child you’ve made together – it shares both your features to create one new, unique look.
› Create sharing spaces – a great comfortable sofa to cuddle up in is perfect.
› Have as large a bed as your room with allow – great for space when you need it, roll room when you don’t!
4 What do you find are the
most common mistakes people
make when they decorate?
What’s the worst example of
this mistake that you have
encountered? (The insane
Scottish house of 1,000
wallpapers comes to mind
from Home Heist).
Like the man who built his house on sand, most people live with negatives that they don’t like and try to design around – this wastes time and effort. If that 1970s big brick fireplace dominates your room, then reach for the sledgehammer and start again – don’t think you can just paint around it! 5 Who were your earliest
design influences and who
inspires you now?
Our earliest influences come from holidays to France (Paris, Bordeaux, Biarritz) and from the music we loved as teenagers – Adam Ant, Duran Duran and the New Romantics – it was all about the glamour! Now our influences come from hotel style – your home should be a five star experience – and from movies like The Hunger Games and The Cook, The Thief and His Wife & Her Lover. Oh and from holiday destinations: we’ve just spent a month in Australia – it
has an amazing design scene and some wonderful architecture.
6 What’s in the future for the Colin and Justin
line of products and where can we find them
here in Canada?
We’re always at the drawing board, exploring new home looks for Colin & Justin Home (our home decor and furniture line) – black metal and blond timber is a mix to watch out for, as is Mid-Century Modern with a colourful twist. We sell through select boutiques in the UK and you’ll find nuggets of C&J in stores like Winners, Marshalls and HomeSense in North America.

PLAN FOR THAT RENOVATION
MAYBE YOU’RE LOOKING TO UPDATE YOUR KITCHEN,
modernize your bathroom, spruce up your living room, create an office nook or finish your basement. These kinds of projects take time to plan for, and I suggest that you seek out a qualified expert to make your renovation dreams come true.
For the past 15 years, more and more Canadians are investing their hard-earned wages repairing, upgrading and expanding their homes. In fact, a recent study conducted by Altus Group revealed today’s renovating industry is worth $63.4 billion nationwide. That is approximately 3.7 per cent of the total GDP, which shows the impact of the renovation sector on the national economy.
Renovating is a great way to increase the value of your home and improve the quality of life for you and your family.
Your home is probably your largest asset and it deserves the attention of a qualified expert. Where do homeowners turn to find a professional contractor? Traditionally, the three main sources have been referrals from friends or neighbours, local home builders’ association listings or local home show exhibitors. Of course, not all renovators are the same. I always recommend hiring a contractor affiliated with the national RenoMark program, who understands the value of customer service during and after projects, and who has access to information on current trends, the latest materials and new regulations. Professional renovators and trade contractors are key components among our more than 1,400 member companies. BILD established the RenoMark program in 2001 to help homeowners identify professionalism and integrity in the renovation industry. To date, the program has successfully given RenoMark renovators a well-known and respected brand that recognizes them as professionals that agree to abide by a renovation-specific code of conduct and a code of ethics of the administering home builders’ association. The latter specifies that the contractor will provide the homeowner with a detailed, written contract, offer a
minimum two-year warranty, carry a minimum $2 million in liability insurance and hold all applicable licences and certificates. The program has rapidly grown to 40 communities across nine provinces, and there are about 300 RenoMark renovators, trade contractors and custom builders across the GTA.
To find the best professional suited to you and your style, simply visit renomark.ca to find a RenoMark renovator near you, then use the searchable database by region and type of project, to determine your best renovator. GTA residents can even customize their search to find a trade contractor specific to their needs, whether it’s upgrading or replacing a roof, a new furnace or air conditioner, hardwood floors, a new deck, or adding new windows and doors. With the growth in business that the renovation industry is experiencing, professional renovators are in high demand, so be sure to give yourself some time to do the proper research.
Like buying a home, a renovation is one of the biggest investments you’ll make. Take your time to ensure the person you hire for the job is one that’s right for you.

O Christmas treeby CARSON ARTHUR
EVERY YEAR MY FAMILY GETS INTO A HOLIDAY DEBATE: Whether to purchase a real tree or one of the faux variety. There are benefits and costs to both options, but the scientific community has gotten behind the theory that until the fake trees no longer use PVC and leads, which are very hard to recycle, the real tree is the way to go. This suits me just fine, because when it comes to holiday traditions, the smell of real pine in the home is at the top of my list.
SIMPLE TIPS FOR CHOOSING A REAL TREE:
Traditionally, any time after the 1st of December is perfect to either visit a tree farm or the local tree stand. This is because colder weather encourages more of the sap from the tree to leave the main trunk and settle in the roots. These dormant trees hold their needles significantly longer. If you are purchasing a tree that has already been cut, keep an eye on the location and see when they get their fresh shipments. Like fresh-cut flowers, a freshly chopped tree will last much longer in your home.
THREE MOST COMMON VARIETIES OF TREES: Pine – With longer needles, the pine tree has a very specific look as your Christmas tree. My grandma always wanted the pine because that was what she grew up with. For ornaments, the longer pine needles and the shape of the branches make it tough to really have a lot on the tree; however, you need less to make it look full! When it comes to scent, the pine is somewhere in the middle and won’t overpower your home. Clean-up with the longer needles is significantly easier, but don’t use the vacuum! Those long needles can really jam the filter. Spruce – One of the most popular varieties, the short-needled spruce, has long been a staple in the home come December. Perfect for ornaments and great for smell, the spruce is also one of the more economically priced trees. The spruce does have a downside, however. Spruce trees are the first to lose their needles because of our warm homes. Those small needles get everywhere, and if you have carpet, you will be pulling sharp barbs out of the pile for months. Fir – My personal favourite and the Cadillac of Christmas trees. While the fir is not known for a strong scent, the soft short needles and great branch structure make it ideal for hanging lights and ornaments. Firs are also one of the best options for longevity, keeping their needles for up to six weeks. I love the look of the Fraser Fir because of the silver colouring under each needle. The downside of the Fir tree has to be the cost, often double the other varieties. A 6-in to 7-in Fir tree can often cost in the hundreds, which is a steep price for something decorative in your home that you recycle after a few weeks.
Any of the three tree options will be great in your home. Just make sure you use my tree preservation recipe to keep it lasting.
› 4 Cups of fresh water › 3 Tbsp. of sugar, which acts as the food for the tree› 1 Tsp. of vinegar, which acidifies the water promoting more absorption
› Few drops of tea-tree oil or bleach to prevent mould growth in the water
If you use this mixture every third watering for your tree and make sure that the tree stand never runs dry, you’ll significantly prolong the enjoyment of your tree.
Make a big deal of getting your tree, go to a local tree farm or lot, and have a great time picking it out. Stop for hot chocolate or cider somewhere on the way home! And when the holiday season is over, make sure your tree is disposed of properly at a recycling centre.

GLOBE PENDANTS ARE BACK IN A BIG WAY. That beautiful curve is easy to ingratiate into any room and any setting. It's a large statement piece and a vital part of a room's function – why not have something extraordinary for this focal point?
Globe pendants work at any price point and any style. They go from glam to eclectic and can be ultra-modern or antique. Have some fun with them!
tip: In a smaller space, where hanging a large light fi xture on a long chain may not be possible, consider using a series of smaller globes in a row. It's a great look over a kitchen island.
A LAST WORD ON A HOT TREND
by ELISA KROVBLIT
In your latest book Kelly Hoppen: How
To Achieve The Home Of Your Dreams,
you give advice on how to perfect a
signature style for your home. What is
your signature style?
A My design ethos is to create timeless
elegance. I use neutral tones, layering
and sumptuous fabrics.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
A I find inspiration everywhere, from
travelling the globe sourcing accessories
and seeing an exhibition to reading
books and watching films while I relax
at my cottage in the beautiful English
countryside. Inspiration mainly comes
to me when I take a few minutes away
from my normal routine to just sit back
and reset my mind.
What do you love about being
a designer?
A Since I was a child, I have always
wanted to be a designer. My mother
always tells me that as a child I was
constantly shifting furniture around
our home, displaying everything at its
best. I am very lucky to be doing a job I
love and to have such supportive family
and friends.
What is your go-to hue?
Taupe is my favourite colour! I love
a neutral palette. Neutrals form the
base of all my designs and are calming
and harmonious.
