Owing to adverse economic developments

in the competitive apparel manufacturing destinations such as rising cost of labour in China, non-compliance to safety standards and political unrest in Bangladesh, Cambodia facing labour problem, high cost of credit in Vietnam and appreciation of Indonesia’s currency, Viraf Turel, Managing Director, Turel Group expects a robust growth of 20% in Indian exports and 12% in the domestic market. “A good technology with limited automation is going to be the preferred technology by the industry,” reiterates Viraf. Among the oldest sewing technology solution providers for the apparel, leather and home textiles industry, Turel Group marked its presence at GTE 2015 with its complete gamut of solutions from Vibemac, Duerkopp Adler, PFAFF, A.S.S., Typical, Kaiyu, Bella, Naomoto, Maier, Mitsubishi, Kingtex, Japsew, Algotex, Jema, Ascolite and Supercrease, with focus on solving the problem of shortage of skilled workers that the apparel manufacturers are facing.

HCA showcases wide range of sewing solutions, from improving an operation to making a complete product

Team of HCA after a successful day at the GTE 2015

The DY 3020TD automatic back pocket sewing machine is available in both single and double colour thread variants. With a maximum sewing speed of 27000 RPM, the automat can sew pockets on leather garments, workwear and cargo shorts due to its quick and easy pocket template changing capabilities.

HCA with more than 100 years of experience in servicing

the apparel industry with ‘World Acclaimed Brand, Best Technology and Services’, showcased a complete line of sewing automats for denim jeans from Duke, range of chainstitch sewing machines from Kansai Special, complete range of automats from Loiva, LW7000 pocket welting machine and S-311 electronic eyelet buttonhole machine from AMF Reece, MJ62 series of patented dual differential feed flat seamers from Megasew, specialized sewing attachments from Racing, sewing machines for leather from Highlead, ActiveSeam and MB series sewing machines from Merrow and thread trimming machines from Grand. “Buying an automat is one thing but maintaining the same is an arduous task because in case of a customized product, all the spare parts and components are available only with the machine manufacturer. This increases the running costs of the machine and the downtime due to delays in shipments of spare parts. But in our case, we are supplying standard machines, whose parts can be purchased from the market and there would be nothing like ‘genuine and exclusive’ HCA parts,” asserts Anil Anand, Managing Director, HCA.

The machines showcased are for automatic belt-loop attaching, back pocket attaching, back pocket designing, J-stitch sewing, waistband attaching, inseam, bottom hemming and BLT-9000 belt-loop trimming

device. Duke also has pocket creasing machines, pattern sewing machine and DY 2020 serging machine equipped with GRA3000 stacker from Racing.

Virendra Uppal, Chairman, AEPC inaugurates Brother S-7300A, SNLS direct-drive machine

BroTHer launches new range of sewing machines for eliminating manual thread trimming

Cost of manufacturing a quality product impacts

the profitability margin of the manufacturer as additional efforts are made to ensure adherence to pre-defined quality standards. This entails employing more workers, having more quality checkpoints and incorporating newer technologies. One such aspect of manufacturing, which requires extra workers, is thread trimming. These workers are not only a liability in terms of extra wages but are also the cause of rejections due to improper thread trimming.

To resolve this issue, Japanese sewing technology provider Brother Industries Ltd. has developed sewing solutions which it introduced at GTE 2015 at the booth of the company’s agent, Magnum Resources. “As per our estimation, 10 thread

trimmers are required for every 100 sewing machines. They are paid Rs. 8,000 per month, which amounts to an additional cost of Rs. 80,000 per month. Add to this the cost of rejected garments which are 0.36% of the daily output of 1,400 pieces, equivalent to 5 pieces, amounting to US $ 30 per day @ US $ 6 per piece. On a monthly basis, it would be an additional US $ 30 X 25 = US $ 750 or Rs. 45,000 burden. Hence, companies look for opportunities to save Rs. 1,25,000 (US $ 2008) every year,” points out Randeep Sahani, General Manager India, Brother.

Since reducing fixed costs such as on infrastructure, transportation, etc. is not possible, apparel manufacturers look at reducing variable manufacturing costs such as on labour. “Not only will

the new sewing machines meet buyers’ requirement of trimming less than 3 mm seam thread, but they will also resolve issues such as bird’s nest, clogging at thick edges and of short threads remaining,” adds Randeep.

Brother attributes the development of the new machines to its in-house R&D team, which has been working on the concept for the past 5 years. The Brother S-7300A is a single-needle direct-drive lockstitch machine with electronic feeding system, thread trimmer and a color LCD touch panel. It is the world’s first lockstitch sewing machine which adopts the electronic feeding system directly with stepping motor. It is a next generation lockstitch machine, which minimizes the remaining short thread length to just 3 mm, possible because of a 2-way trimming mechanism.

I am here to see what all new and innovative machines the suppliers are offering at the event. Hope to find something useful for my setup. The focus is on labour saving and productive machinery.”

The Indian apparel manufacturing industry

has been witnessing steady growth in both domestic sales and exports. It is driving companies to adopt new technologies and systems to optimize operations, reduce overheads, increase margins, and remain ahead of the competition. French company Lectra has more than 4 decades of global experience in optimising and speeding up product development and cutting room operations in the apparel industry, and it offers several solutions which the industry can use to meet the challenges in a dynamic market scenario. At this year’s Garment Technology Expo, Lectra is demonstrating its Kaledo® design solution, Modaris® 3D design solution, Diamino® marker making solution, Optiplan® cut order planning solution, Vector® cutting systems, and Lectra Fashion PLM for lean product development, optimising cutting room operations and increasing speed of product development. “We will use this opportunity to communicate our exciting plans for education institutions to enable students to face the changing needs of this industry, from design to production. For this we will organize a special event on our booth from 3 pm to 4 pm, on 2nd March,” shares Hari Kenkare, Marketing Coordinator, Lectra Technologies India.

The Vector cutting system enables manufacturers to save energy, reduce the number of workers per machine, minimize errors in production, and provides preventive/ maintenance alerts. The

Vector cutters are equipped with dynamic vacuum control which enables high pressure fabric holding and up to 15% reduction in energy usage. Their (vacuum control’s) over 120 sensors transmit data in real time such that Vector cutters can maintain a continuous dialogue from anywhere in the world with experts at Lectra’s five international call centres.

Lectra’s suite of solutions for product development encompasses fitting, costing, pattern & marker making, designing and communication. Lectra Fashion PLM seamlessly connects different teams to the product development ecosystem from the product’s conceptualization stage. Creative and technical

designers can add product specifications and other information directly from Adobe Illustrator, reducing the time usually spent on file management, and minimizing the risk of working on an old version of a file. The PLM’s deeper integration with Lectra’s 3D virtual product sampling, reduces the number of physical prototypes required, further reducing the cost and time to market, which results in better looking and better fitting styles. Design and product development teams can review several design options, check fit for multiple sizes, and make modifications by adding annotations to 3D snapshots. This collaborative platform enables extended teams to have direct access to this information and to also get it in real-time.

It is always interesting to visit the GTE and there is something new to see every time. This time at the fair I’m looking for new machines and technology for bikini manufacturing. The venue is also a good platform to catch up with what other people in the industry are doing.”
