IntroductionRegulations with regard to the Final Exam are determined by the SZIE TVSZ 40-49. §. Graduate students write MSc thesis (dissertation) studying in the programme of university, supplementing

2

course, postgraduate specialist training course, MSc, MA programmes at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, and students write BSc thesis studying in the following programmes: higher level vocational training -, college, BSc, BA programmes, furthermore they take a final examination.

The precondition of sending the student to final examination is the preparation and handing in of BSc/MSc thesis, of which defence is part of the final examination. In the process of writing the thesis, the students have to get acquainted with the professional literature of the topic, they have to gain skills in reading literature, they have to be able to collect data individually, to process and analyse them, to draw conclusions and also to make suggestions based on their findings. The two main parts of the thesis are literature overview and own research.

1. Topic selection

1. The independent educational organisational units of the faculty can publish topic for MSc/BSc thesis within the field of subjects taught by them or in the field of their research profile by giving the name and position of the advisor. The topic-suggestions have to be discussed before publication with the person in charge of specializations and then they have to be sent by the person in charge of specializations –who will give their opinion- to the dean until 20 September in each year, in case of cross-semester until 20 February. The published topics approved also by the dean have to correspond in style with the training goals of the given major and have to be based on the knowledge acquired within the frame of different subjects.

2. The topics approved by the dean until 1 October, and in case of cross-semester until 1 March, have to be announced on the notice-board and on the website of the individual educational organisational unit until 15 October, and in case of cross-semester until 15 March.

3. Students can chose topics, which are not among the topics published for BSc/MSc thesis on condition that it suits the training goals in style of the major/specialization and it requires and makes it possible to apply the acquired knowledge gained within the frame of different subjects.

4. The Secretariat of Studies has to inform the students about the process of choosing BSc/MSc topic until the end of 3rd semester in case of BA/BSc training, and until the end of first semester regarding MA/MSc training.

5. The students have to hand in the topic of their BSc/MSc thesis 3 semesters prior to the planned final examination on the proper from (appendix 1) to the Institute, which published the topic. The student can change the topic of thesis during training only once with a well-founded reason and with the consent of the programme manager and the vice-dean responsible for education. Accepting the change is a subject of personal consideration.

6. The invitation of the advisor and having the form of topic selection signed by the advisor is the responsibility of the student primarily with the consent of the leader of the individual organisational manager unit (Institute) / or with the programme

3

manager. (If the student has already agreed on the consultation with a teacher, it should be mentioned as note on the form of topic selection).

7. The topic of the thesis has to be given on the topic selection form. The topic selection form can be accepted if the student completely filled in the framed part concerning him. The given thesis topic is checked by the programme manager and by the leader of the institute and upon acceptance they sign the topic selection form. Then the leader of the individual organisational unit together with the person responsible for the major/ specialization decide on the invitation of the advisor and accordingly the advisor agrees to undertake the task by signing the form.

8. The Secretariat of Studies has to inform the student about the person of advisor until the last day of his topic selection semester’s study semester. The selected and accepted thesis topic has to be registered in Neptun.

9. In the process of writing the thesis, the student has to keep a continuous connection with his internal advisor and the advisor/teacher has to give him time to meet. The advisor justifies the regular consultations with his signature, which has to be attached to the thesis as an appendix (appendix 6).

2. Evaluation of thesis 1. By the suggestion of the leader of the individual organisational unit publishing the topic,

the thesis will be reviewed by two reviewers: teacher or researcher at the university, a fellow-worker or PhD student with relevant university degree – if necessary one of them can be an outside professional not in legal relationship with the university. The president of the Final Examination Committee (ZVB)– who primarily can be the person responsible for major/specialization, other people can be included excessively if the above mentioned are busy or due to organisational problems– appoints the reviewers of the thesis. The reviewer cannot be the advisor of the thesis. Upon inviting the reviewers it should be taken into account that one of the members of ZVB – either as an advisor or as a reviewer – should be familiar with the thesis.

2. The reviewer has to prepare the evaluation electronically (thesis.gtk.szie.hu) and he has to send 1 printed copy - signed by the reviewer -, and 1 electronic copy (without signature) to the organisational unit issuing the evaluation until the given deadline.

3. The reviewers evaluate the thesis by the evaluation criterion found on the electronic evaluation form and they declare about accepting the thesis and propose it for defence:

• By evaluating the content of the thesis the reviewer takes the professional standard of identifying, approaching and solving the problem, the proportion of descriptive and analytic parts, individual thoughts, the professional precision of the author’s suggestions, the arguments and also the used (or the not used) professional literature into account. The value and quality of the author’s own work should be highlighted.

• Apart from the professional content of the thesis, the reviewer gives opinion about the style of the thesis and also whether it meets the formal requirements fixed in the present regulation.

4

4. In case one of the reviewers evaluates the thesis unsatisfactory, a third reviewer is necessary to be invited. If the second evaluation strengthens the unsatisfactory result, the student cannot take the final examination.

5. If there is a three-mark difference between the evaluations of the two reviewers, a third

reviewer is necessary to be invited for evaluation. In case according to one of the appointed reviewers the thesis cannot be proposed for defence, but according to the other reviewer it can, the opinion of the third (appointed) reviewer will decide.

6. In case of a rejected BSc/MSc thesis the student cannot take the final examination. The presentation of the BSc/MSc thesis and the examination from subjects – on the occasion of the first exam – has to be on one date.

7. The thesis cannot be accepted if:

• it contains serious professional errors, • it is only of descriptive style, it does not contain own research, • it seriously offends formal requirements, • in case of plagiarism, when parts of professional literature and other author’s ideas are

indicated as own thoughts without reference (including BSc/MSc thesis written by others as well).

3. General and formal requirements of BSc/MSc thesis

1. 1 bound copy and 1 electronic version (1 CD, which contains only one pdf file of the whole thesis and other files are connected to the thesis, but cannot be in the thesis – for example voice recording of the interview, video – of the written thesis has to be handed in at the location of training. The verification about uploading, which is printed from Thesis system has to be handed in at the Central Directorate of Studies in Gödöllő, the thesis and the CD have to be handed in at the Administration of the institute publishing the topic of BSc/MSc thesis by the student. At the location of Budapest training the verification about uploading, the thesis and the CD have to be handed in at the Directorate of Studies. The deadline of handing is approved by the Dean every year and can be found on the website of the Faculty in the tab ‘Schedule of the semesters’. These dates are usually adjusted to the following dates: 1 October or 1 April in the given year (until 15 October or 15 April for excess charge). (Appendix 8) You can read more information about the usage of Thesis platform on the website of the Faculty.

2. Thesis prepared after the given deadline can be defended only in the next final examination semester.

3. The thesis has to meet the requirements of the particularities of the given scientific field/specialization, furthermore it has to contain the description of the processed professional literature and the presentation of research method and the presentation of the results based on own research.

5

4. The thesis should reflect the personal stand of the student in the examined topic.

5. The general formal requirements of BSc/MSc thesis:

• The thesis has to be correct as regards its content, its spelling; its outlook and its style, there should be no spelling mistake. The thesis should be typed in A/4 format and should be written by word processor (Times New Roman, 12-point type size, 1.5 space between line, justified, on the left side (side of bonding) margin of 3 cms, on the other sides margin of 2.5 cms), printed one-or two sided in one copy and bound in black leatherette.

• The main chapters should start on new pages. In case of two-sided printing, the main chapters (Heading 1) should start on the odd new pages.

• The significance of titles and subtitles should be observed by the type of letters (capital and small letters, size of letter), by using underlined or bold type letters and by their position (centred, justified on the side). In the whole thesis the titles and subtitles should be consistent and decimal-numbered (Heading1, Heading2, Heading3)

• Page numbering: page-numbering of the thesis should be on the bottom right corner. The internal cover has no page numbering; the first numbered page starts with the table of contents with page number 2.

• Before and after the titles in the text– depending on their importance, for a better transparency– there should be an empty line left.

• The length of the MSc thesis – without space – can be 70-140 thousand characters, and the length of BSc thesis – without space – can be 50-100 thousand characters with all the in-text tables and figures included.

• Basic tables and any other data and information connected to the understanding of the results of the thesis can be put in the annex at the end of the thesis.

• The compulsory appendices of the thesis can come after the occurring annexes.

• The format of the external cover page: the name MSc THESIS or BSc THESIS should be in the centre of the upper third and also in the bottom right corner, the name of the author, the major comes underneath. The location of training comes in the bottom centre and the year comes under that (Appendix 2). On the external cover of the secret theses and also on the spinal of the theses the label ‘SECRET’ should be indicated.

• Spinal: the author of the thesis and the year should be indicated.

6

• Internal cover page: upper centred, name of university in the first line, name of Faculty in the second line, name of the individual organisational unit in the third line. Centred in the upper third there is the title, under it in the centre the name and position of the advisor, under it the name and position of the leader of the individual institute publishing the topic. Under it there is the name of author, major, specialization, under it the type of training and finally the location and the year of thesis underneath (Appendix 3).

• Title of the thesis: it should be short, but it should represent the message of the thesis and it should refer to the topic of the thesis. In case there can be an explanatory subtitle added.

• The tables and separately the figures (drawings, photos, graphs) of the thesis should have a continuous numbering and besides this, all the tables and figures should be given a short, but descriptive title (in case of tables the title should come before table and in case of figures the title should come after figure). The source of the tables and of the figures has to be indicated. In the text there should always be a reference to the tables/figures with their numbers.

3.1. Main parts of thesis and its formal requirements

3.1.1. Table of contents It comes at the beginning of the thesis, after the internal cover. The chapter/subchapter titles listed in the table of contents have to be the same in the text word by word,

• decimal numbering has to be used (maximum three-level sub-numbers), the importance of chapters has to be observed from the list,

• concerning page numbers have to be included besides titles. The table of contents usually contains the following (the structure and the content units of the thesis is the following):

1.Introduction .................................................................................................................... X 2. Literature overview .............................................................................................. .. X

2.1. Subchapter 1 .......................................................................................................... X 2.2. Subchapter 2 ........................................................................................................ X

3. Own research ............................................................................................................... X 3.1. Aims of research, research questions, hypotheses ..................................… X 3.2. Conditions and location of research .............................................………. X 3.3. Research methods and the introduction of sample .......................................X 3.4. Results ........................................................................................................ X

4. Conclusions, suggestions ......................................................................................... X

7

5. Summary ..................................................................................................................... X Bibliography ................................................................................................................... X Annex ............................................................................................................................ X Appendices ....................................................................................................................... X The titles of the given main- and subchapters can be changed and can be divided to further subchapters, and if that is the case, the rule of decimal numbering has to be followed.

3.1.2. Introduction The length of introduction: 1.5-3 pages. It contains a more detailed definition of the thesis topic than in the title of the thesis, and it contains the introduction of the elaboration and its logic. In the introduction the student presents the chosen topic’s:

• topicality, • significance, and • reason for choosing this topic• the aims of researches and analysis • research questions.

3.1.3. Theoretical background of research, processing of professional literature This part of the thesis should be prepared in accordance with the skills and preparedness of the training’s level (BA, MA). Closely topic related professional literature, presentation and summary of research results and their comparison and criticism:

• as regards BA thesis, there should be reference to at least 10-15 different Hungarian professional literature (foreign language literature as far as possible), as regards MA there should be reference to at least 15 Hungarian and foreign language publications – book, monograph, research material, journal article (materials published primarily 5-10 years prior to the preparation of the thesis), and above this, sources from the internet can also be used (they should be retraceable, identifiable and should have author and title)

• it should contain the student’s personal opinion (even if it means the acceptance of an existing view)

• it should be based on relevant professional sources (source-criticism and checking the authenticity of sources is important)

• only definitions can be included from college/university notes Correct reference means that the student clearly identifies which idea and text from which author’s work is coming from.

8

Reference should be made:

In case the student used the thoughts, the idea or the model of somebody else (content-based, indirect citation, paraphrase): the name of the author and the year of publication should be divided by comma, and the two should be put in brackets, eg.: (Csete, 1997) o in case there is reference in the thesis to more publications of the same author from

the same year: the difference should be marked with the letters a,b,c (…) following the year, eg.: (Csete, 1987/a); (Csete, 1987/b).

o in case the used literature source has two authors, both of the two authors and the year have to be indicated, e.g.: (Bernáth – Enyedi, 1981)

o in case of three or more authors, the name of the first author has to be indicated in the reference, marking that there are more authors, e.g.: (Szerdahelyi et al., 1980) In case the student cites the ideas or sentences of others word by word:

o o the text should be put in quotation marks and the page numbers have to be indicated as well in the reference [e.g.: (Csete, 1997, 65.old.)]

o the length should be maximum 4-6 lines

3.1.4. Own research

This part of the thesis should be based on methodology accepted by the scientific field of the topic. The Institution publishing the thesis topic is responsible for defining further requirements connected to the own research methodology. The ‘Own research’ part of the thesis includes the presentation of the hypotheses and the introduction of research conditions, location of the research, research sample and research methods. The length of individual research should reach 50% of the whole thesis. The detailed exploration and analysis of the research topic:

• as far as possible the thesis should focus on new relationships, which have not been examined yet

• the variables should be tested. 1. Aims of the research, presentation of the hypotheses of the study

The thesis should contain hypotheses phrased on the base of research questions. The hypotheses should be tested and examined by the methods used by the candidate. The hypothesis should not contain trivial statement, already known facts or anything known from professional literature.

2. Introduction of research conditions and location The introduction of research conditions includes the introduction of the method, the time and the location of data collection. Concerning the circumstances of the investigation, attention must be drawn to the possibilities of distortion arising from the circumstances.

9

3. Presentation of the research sample

The research sample is the subject of the research, which provides measurable variables and data. The research sample should be well-defined and well-described. The characteristics of the sample should be briefly described, but should be described precisely in terms of variables.

4. Presentation of research methods The processes used for the sake of the hypotheses are called methods. The method or methods used in the process of carrying out the research and analysing the gained information – including the conclusive reason for their use – has to be presented briefly. The source of the method has to be indicated. If in the process of processing data, the student uses mathematical-statistical methods, the denomination of the applied statistical programs (e.g.: Excel, SPSS) should be indicated and the software-specific review of the applied method is also necessary.

5. Presentation of the results It is the essence of the thesis, which has great importance in the evaluation. The purpose is to provide a logical, well-traceable, well-illustrated, clear description of the results of the work using tables, graphs, diagrams. The analysis should be based on the research questions/hypotheses, the concepts and models presented in the theoretical background part of the thesis (literary processing). It should be used consistently during the thesis. The chapter should contain only the statements supported by facts and arguments from the own research. The presentation of the results should not contain the personal opinion of the student, the comparison with professional literature, but it should only contain the data from the research. It is recommended to present the results according to the test method, as a separate subchapter per method.

3.1.5. Conclusions and suggestions:

The chapter contains a description of the specific conclusions, proposals which is based on the used literature and the results of the own research: • the justification or rejection of hypotheses • the comparison of own results with literature data and addition of personal comments

demonstration of the achievement of the set goals, • summary of the conclusion along the hypotheses, and then formulate concrete, tangible,

feasible proposals.

3.1.6. Summary

10

The summary of BSc/MSc Thesis is given in the chapter of “Summary” (the range is 1-4 pages) by highlighting the important parts of the thesis (based on the written chapters, briefly). The essence of this chapter is to give a complete overview about the work of the student in the following order:

• summary of the subject, thesis aim, hypotheses, summary of the methods • summarizing the results of the study, • comparing own results with the literature data• describe concrete conclusions• suggestions for future studies (the possibilities for further discussion, outlook) • the phrasing of application (e.g.: the results of the present research contribute to the

development of which specific field)

3.1.7. Bibliography The bibliography is a list of books, studies, articles and other sources of literature that the student refers to in the thesis. The bibliography must be complied in alphabetical order according to the initials of the authors’ names:

• The bibliography only has to include the sources what were referred to in the text, but each of them must be included here.

• o Professional literature (book, study, journal , article), o and other literatures (laws, internal publications. web sites, and databases)

should be separated• formally and typographically it should be uniform • no title of the authors is used (e.g: dr.) the names of all the

co-authors have to be indicated The editorial order appropriate for the official form of authors’ alphabetical bibliography: name(s) of author(s), (with the first letter of the firstname)

• year of publication/issuing (in brackets) • title of publication• place of publication• name of publisher • volume number (if it can be interpreted in case of publication) • page number (p. or o.)
