Over 8 million Australians travelled overseas in 2012. For most it was a fascinating, enjoyable and incident free trip, but for some unfortunately there were issues, many of which could have been reduced or avoided with a little planning and preparation before departure.

Prior to travelling, research your destination to find out what vaccinations may be required and recommended

It is probably wise not to travel for a week or two after commencing new medications, in case of any adverse side-effects.

Common problems can then be easily prevented by seeing your doctor and pharmacist well before your departure date.

Have a booster of childhood shots eg. Tetanus/Diphtheria, and possibly polio, as these only last some 10 years.

See Travel Health Clinics by all means, however, if you have health insurance with an extra component, you will receive a substantial rebate for common vaccinations such as Hepatitis A and B and Typhoid from your pharmacy via prescriptions, thus reducing already competitive prices. Similarly, if you have a Social Security card, price concessions may kick in for some medications eg. Doxycycline.

Vaccinations often require a course, so please allow time for getting these done. Request that injections are administered into the arm which you don’t sleep on. ...............................

Altitude Sickness To relieve hangover-like symptoms, drink lots of water. Diamox (half to one tablet twice a day) commencing 1 day before travel, and continued for at least 5 days. Possible side effects - stomach ache and increased urination (Sulpha drug allergy).

Alcohol and coffee should be avoided as well as sedatives which will slow down breathing. Try to allow the body to slowly adjust to high elevations.

Antimalarials Doxycycline - side effects such as sun sensitivity, thrush, stomach and possible deactivation of oral contraceptives to be considered. One tablet daily commencing 2 days prior and for 14 days after leaving. If feverish from unknown source see a doctor.

Possibly wear light coloured long-sleeved shirts and long pants especially from sunset to sunrise.Malarone – may be a better product but is far more costly

Antibiotics Oral general and specific stomach/urinary tract and topical - (Bactroban) . Amoxycillin/Cephalexin/Roxithromycin

Anti-nauseants/Vomiting Stemetil/Maxolon - avoid dairy products for 2 days

ChildrenBlocked ears/earaches - Sofradex drops, Phenergan/Dimetapp liquid an hour before flight, nasal decongestant spray at same timePanadol/Nurofen liquid for fever

ConjunctivitisChloramphenical ointment DiabetesIf insulin dependent, get letter from doctor confirming that you are carrying syringes. You may need glucagon mini-jet, and extra glucose monitoring, ID tag. May need breakthrough insulin shotDiarrhoeaRehydrate with ORS/Gastrolyte, “stopper” like Imodium/Lomotil. Particularly important with the elderly and young children.........................

• Get up and move around the aircraft cabin. Wear support socks• Exercise your feet and legs for 5 minutes every hour• Detergent/spot-remover.• Ear plugs/eye mask. Don’t use earplugs during take-off/landings.• Electrical adaptors-plugs and remember currency differences. Some plane seats offer

plug-in power but these will require special adaptors.• Envelopes (large to mail items home)• Emergency card - have a 10x15cm card with emergency phone numbers including your

doctors numbers and medical allergies including phone number to report lost credit cards, passport numbers etc.

• Family travel - request bassinet for infants, but reserve early flights• Wear comfortable non-binding clothes with elastic waist bands and maybe slip-on shoes. Do

stretching exercises and walk during the flight.• Food allergies - list them on a laminated card to be carried with you at all times. Also list drug

allergies if applicable• Footwear to be well worn in prior to leaving• Foreign purchases - place everything in the one case for customs inspection• Gettingagoodflight’ssleep - try to be well rested prior to your departure so that flight day is

stress-free• Bring a supportive neck pillow and perhaps a warm travel blanket. Have a good eyeshade

and earplugs and even noise cancelling headphones• Set your watch to your destination’s time as soon as you board • Instructflightattendantsnot to wake you for meals or drinks and fasten your seatbelt over

your blanket so you won’t be disturbed should the seatbelt sign come on • Glasses, screwdriver and a spare pair of glasses• Hat - wide-brimmed• Hearing-aid batteries• ID - you may be asked for this frequently, so perhaps carry ID/passport holder around your

neck. I have 2 laminated mini sized copies of my passport in a separate wallet• Inflatabletravelpillow for airport stays, flights, bus or train travel• International drivers licence.......................
