workshop on “Assessment of Boiler

Performance and steam utilization”, at AMA,

on 5-6th May 2012.

Inauguration was on 5th May 2012, 9:00 A.M

morning at AMA. Prof. M.I.Vyas welcomed. Dr.

A.K.Asthana with a bouquet of flowers. At the

inauguration ceremony Mr. Rohit Shah from

GCCI remained present.

Nearly 20 faculties from different colleges of GTU participated.

Dr. A.K. Asthana (Seminar Technical specialist), from Bureau of Energy Efficiency,

New Delhi, conducted the work shop.

The following topics were covered by Dr. Asthana through lectures, quizzes, and group

exercises:

Dr Asthana had conducted the workshop and the highly useful and practical ideas, learnt by

the participants. The Vice-President GCCI praised the work of GTU and promised full

support from GCCI for such activities. Dr Akshai Aggarwal said that he wanted that all our

faculty members and students, who are studying Boilers and steam systems in Mechanical

Engineering, should learn about the practice of their discipline. He said that he expected

that our faculty members and students will be able to visit the SMEs all over Gujarat,

measure the efficiency of the steam systems and advise the SMEs about how the efficiency

of their systems may be improved.

This workshop, for GTU, was a continuation of the earlier workshop of 25-27 March 2012.

(Please see the Report on the next page.) That workshop had Resource Persons from

Department of Energy, USA and GCCI had come forward to organize it at their auditorium.

DOE officers had discussed about a software approach for calculation of the efficiency. Dr

Aggarwal wanted our faculty and students to learn the software-based approach and study

its validity for the conditions at our SMEs. He said GTU has Bachelor’s, Master’s and

doctoral programs in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science and it should be

possible for us to take the DOE software and improve and update it so that it becomes even

more useful to the whole of the world. At the end, he thanked Dr A K Asthana, Prof M I Vyas,

the GTU team of officers, who were working at the week-end and all the participants for

making the program a success.

Energy Efficiency in Industrial Steam System

GTU, jointly with GCCI, organized a three days workshop on “Energy Efficiency in

Industrial Steam System” from 25th to 27th march 2012 at GCCI Ahmedabad with the help

of three experts from Department of Energy, USA.

20 faculty members and students from different colleges affiliated to GTU and 20

participants from various industries participated in this workshop.

Dr. Riyaz Papar, Dr. Greg Havell and Thomas Wenning, Department of Energy, US conducted

the workshop.

The course of workshop was divided into four major categories.

1. Steam System Fundamental

2. Steam generation efficiency

3. Utilization of steam effectively

4. Management of steam distribution

The workshop consisted of 2 days of classroom teaching and 1 day of field visit at M/S.

Crown Laminates, at Changodara.

Topics covered on the first day of classroom training: steam system fundamentals, efficient

generation of steam, effective utilisation of resources and minimizing the steam losses by

proper distribution of steam. The experts pointed out that by introducing the change in

energy management, productivity of the plant can be increased which results into higher

profits.

They made participant aware about their steam system scooping tool software which is to

be used for assessment of steam system of plant.

The 2nd day: All the participants visited M/S. Crown Laminates PVT. LTD. at Changodara.

They took data for steam system at different points in the entire plant.

The 3rd Day: The participants used the data in SSAT to find out the efficiency of the steam

system. During the workshop, all the participants practiced with SSAT software on their

laptop and understood the concept.

Faculty members, who attended the workshop got the hands on experience of tools and

appreciated the efforts of GTU and GCCI.

GCCI expressed special thanks and gratitude to Hon. V.C. Dr. Akshai Aggarwal for supporting

the Workshop and being the partner of this workshop. They appreciated Dr. Aggarwal’s

vision for industry- institute interaction thrugh GTU Innovation Council. Dr. Akshai

Aggarwal appreciated the efforts put in by Prof. M.I.Vyas, Shri Rohit Shah and Sh Tanmay

Mehta for making this workshop a successful event. He also thanked the DOE team and Shri

Arvind Patel, who made the facilities of Crown Laminates available.

Hon.VC Dr. Akshai Aggarwal remained present at the inaugural in the morning of Sunday

25th March and the valedictory session in the evening of 27th March 2012.
