This paper presents an account of politeness phenomena in modern Chinese. The modernconception of po liteness as well as its historical origin are discussed. A critical com parison is madebetween western notions o f face and politeness and their Chinese counterparts. Fou r politenessmaxims are formulated and illustrated. The relation between politeness on the one hand, andlanguage and conversation on the other, is also discussed.1 .
