INTRODUCCIÓN | INTRODUCTION

¿Por qué una guía de locaciones de Montevideo? Porque Montevideo es un departamento amable para filmar, con paisajes que merecen ser registrados. En esta versión impresa presentamos una selección de locaciones como primera muestra del potencial fílmico del departamento, que se complementará con otras herramientas en las cuales la Oficina de Locaciones Montevideanas ya está trabajando.

La concreción de este catálogo es un ejercicio de profesionalización y un esfuerzo por validar el proceso de trabajo conjunto con todos los actores vinculados al sector audiovisual. Estamos convencidos de que será fuente de estímulo para la com-prensión cabal de lo que implica la labor de los realizadores, productores, técnicos, actores uruguayos en la búsqueda de desarrollar esta creciente industria y diversificar mercados.

Al mismo tiempo, muestra nuestra preocupación por procurar que la actividad audiovisual conviva de la mejor manera con las actividades cotidianas de los barrios y sus vecinos.

Presentamos nuestra ciudad y nuestro departamento seguros de que este instrumento será una señal clara de compromiso con la mejora de la gestión.

Why publish a locations guide to Montevideo? Because Montevideo is a congenial department in which to film, with scenery that deserves to be documented. In this printed version of the guide we present a selection of locations as an initial sample of the department’s film potential. It will be supplemented by a number of further tools which the Montevideo Locations Office is preparing.

The production of this catalog has implied an exercise in professionalization and an effort to validate the joint work of all the stakeholders associated with the audiovisual sector. We believe this guide will provide an incentive to fully understand what the work of Uruguayan creators, producers, technicians and actors entails in their attempt to develop this growing industry and to diversify markets.

At the same time, it shows our concern in endeavoring to make audiovisual activities coexist on the best possible terms with the routine activities of neighborhoods and the people who live in them.

We present our city and our department in the certainty that this tool will be a clear sign of our commitment to improved management.

Es el único jardín botánico del país, tiene una extensión de 13 hectáreas y funciona como centro de actividades científicas y paseo recreativo.

La rosaleda Juana de Ibarbourou está ubicada en el paseo del Prado. Está formada por cuatro grandes pérgolas y en el centro se ubica una fuente de bronce. Además de la gran variedad de especies vegetales que conforman el parque, cuenta con 450 especies de rosas.

De estilo art nouveau, el Rosedal fue inaugurado en 1912. Fue diseñado por el paisajista francés Charles Racine y ejecutado por el arquitecto Eugenio Baroffio.

The Juana de Ibarbourou rose garden is located in Prado’s promenade. It is composed of four large pergolas and a bronze fountain in the middle. In addition to a great variety of plants, the garden houses 450 rose species.

El parque comprende 106 hectáreas en torno al arroyo Miguelete. Cuenta con una gran variedad de especies vegetales y árboles frutales provenientes de distintas partes del mundo. Originalmente formaba parte de la quinta de José Buschental, y se transformó en espacio público en 1873.

The park occupies an area of 106 hectares on the banks of the Miguelete Stream. It houses a great variety of plants and fruit trees from different parts of the world. It used to belong to José Buschental’s villa and became a public space in 1873.

Espacio verde de uso público; sirve de límite entre los barrios Malvín y Punta Gorda. En la parte cercana a la costa presenta una topografía escarpada, donde se ubica el Molino de Pérez, antiguo molino hidráulico.

El proyecto del parque data de 1956. El molino, que es de 1835, fue restaurado en 1956-1958 y reciclado en 1999.

Baroffio Park is a green public space that serves as a boundary between the neighborhoods of Malvín and Punta Gorda. There are craggy, uneven areas close to the coast, where the Molino de Pérez is located; an old water-powered mill.

The park was designed in 1956. The mill, originally built in 1835, was restored between 1956 and 1958 and renovated in 1999.

Espacio verde de uso público. Cuenta con un lago central con un escenario al aire libre, el castillo del parque, una glorieta, un patio andaluz y una gran variedad de especies vegetales nativas y foráneas.

Es el segundo parque público montevideano, data de 1888. El ingeniero Paullier es responsable del diseño, con una concepción pintoresquista del paisajismo inglés. El acondicionamiento es del paisajista Charles Racine.

Parque zoológico público desde 1919, ubicado en un barrio céntrico de la ciudad.

Originalmente casaquinta privada en la que sus dueños coleccionaban animales con un concepto victoriano de exhibición. Primaban las jaulas pequeñas y senderos que marcaban el recorrido del parque. En 1912, el matrimonio Rossell y Rius-Pereira donó el predio de siete hectáreas a la Intendencia de Montevideo.

Centrally located zoological gardens, open to the public since 1919.

It was originally a private villa whose owners collected animals in the manner of the Victorian concept of exhibition. Small cages and paths which marked out the route to be followed around the park were the prevailing features. In 1912, Alejo Rossell y Rius and his wife, Dolores Pereira, donated the seven-hectare site to Montevideo City Hall.

Plaza pública. Se distingue por su particular ubicación en la Punta Gorda, península barrancosa con características de mirador natural.

El diseño moderno combina un orden racional en la meseta y un tratamiento agreste en las laderas rocosas que terminan en la rambla. La creación del espacio público, diseñado por el arquitecto Ruben Dufau, data de 1928-1934.


Cuenta con numerosas especies vegetales, entre las que se destacan eucaliptos, palmeras y canteros de aloes.

A public square particularly noted for its location on Punta Gorda, an outcrop of land ending in a bluff, which acts as a natural lookout point.

The square’s modern design combines the rational order of the plateau with the rough wilderness of the rocky slopes leading to the rambla. This public space was designed by architect Ruben Dufau and was constructed between 1928 and 1934.


There are many different kinds of plants here, such as eucalyptus, palm trees and aloe borders.

La creación de este espacio público data de 1897 y el diseño de 1920.

Plaza pública en el centro de la ciudad. Se caracteriza por los majestuosos edificios que la rodean, su importante escalera y el monumento a la Libertad ubicado en el centro.

Situada en el kilómetro 0, nació en 1836 como la plaza central del trazado de la ciudad. Es atravesada por la avenida 18 de Julio, arteria principal de Montevideo.

A public square in the heart of the city. Its special features include the stately buildings that surround it, its broad flight of steps and the statue of Liberty at the center.

It marks the country’s “kilometer 0” and was established in 1836 as the central point in the layout of the city. Montevideo’s main street, avenida 18 de Julio, cuts through the middle of the square.

Plaza pública ubicada en el límite entre los barrios Ciudad Vieja y Centro. Sede de los actos públicos oficiales, es un ícono de la ciudad, como el monumento a Artigas ubicado en el centro.

La creación del espacio público, que data de 1836, es obra del ingeniero militar José M. Reyes. Su forma actual y dimensiones son de 1837. Las referencias tomadas por el arquitecto Carlos Zucchi, autor de la concepción espacial, responden al tipo de plaza laudatoria del clasicismo francés.


Se destacan las palmeras como componente básico del equipamiento arbóreo.

A public square located on the boundary between the neighborhoods of Ciudad Vieja and Centro. This iconic square-–with the statue of Artigas at the center—is a venue for official public ceremonies.

It was created as a public space in 1836 and is the work of a military engineer, José M. Reyes. Its present shape and dimensions were established in 1837. The features introduced by architect Carlos Zucchi, who designed the square’s current concept of space, are in the manner of laudatory squares in the classic French style.


Its palm trees are a distinctive feature of its vegetation.

CIUDAD VIEJA. Circunvalación Durango

Plaza pública. Se destaca por sus accesos oblicuos, la caminería ondulante y la verja ochavada; es la única plaza montevideana que la conserva. Los edificios que la rodean le dan un marco especial a este rincón de la ciudad con reminiscencias parisinas.

La creación del espacio público data de 1878. Su estilo pintoresquista es obra del paisajista francés Édouard André, encargado del diseño.


CIUDAD VIEJA. Circunvalación Durango

A public square. It features angled access points, winding paths and iron railings forming an octagon. This is the only square in Montevideo that still maintains its railings. The surrounding buildings provide a distinctive framework with a Parisian air for this corner of the city.

It was created as a public space in 1878. Its Picturesque style is the work of French landscape artist Édouard André, who was entrusted with its design.

La rambla es una larga avenida que recorre las costas del Río de la Plata. Se extiende a lo largo de 30 kilómetros desde Capurro hasta el barrio de Carrasco, límite del departamento de Montevideo. Además de ser una importante vía de circulación vehicular, es el paseo peatonal por excelencia.

El primer tramo de la obra, rambla Sur, fue proyectado por el ingeniero Juan Pedro Fabini en el año 1928 y fue inaugurado en 1935.

The rambla is a long avenue that borders the Río de la Plata coastline. Thirty kilometers long (over eighteen miles), it starts out in Capurro and stretches all the way to the neighborhood of Carrasco, to the boundaries of the department of Montevideo. In addition to being a major means of circulation for traffic, the rambla is the city’s favorite pedestrian promenade.

The first stage of the project, rambla Sur, was planned by engineer Juan Pedro Fabini in 1928 and opened to the public in 1935.

Es una de las avenidas más importantes de la ciudad. En un extremo se encuentra el Palacio Legislativo y en el otro la plaza Fabini. Se caracteriza por el considerable porte de sus edificios.

En su recorrido se encuentran importantes edificios de diversos estilos arquitectónicos como la iglesia de la Aguada, el Centro Militar, el Banco de Seguros del Estado, entre otros.

This is one of the city’s major avenues. At one end is the Palacio Legislativo and at the other, Fabini Square. It is distinctive because of the considerable size of the buildings that line it.

Several of these sizeable buildings in different architectural styles include Aguada Church, Centro Militar, Banco de Seguros del Estado, and others.

Importante avenida concebida en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX como arteria de borde de lo que fuera la Ciudad Novísima, con el cometido de fijar los límites de la ciudad. Nace en la rambla de Punta Carretas y termina en Capurro; conecta con diversas rutas nacionales y recorre un ángulo de 90 grados.

En su largo recorrido se encuentran edificios de los más diversos estilos arquitectónicos e importantes monumentos de la ciudad.


PUNTA CARRETAS, PARQUE RODÓ, CORDÓN, TRES CRUCES, LA COMERCIAL, JACINTO VERA, REDUCTO, PRADO, CAPURRO.

A major avenue designed in the second half of the 19th century as a thoroughfare to border what was then the newest part of the city, with the purpose of fixing its boundaries. It starts out at the rambla in Punta Carretas and after a 90º curve, ends in Capurro. It serves as a means of connection with a number of national highways.

Buildings in very diverse architectural styles are to be found along the length of this street, as well as several of the city’s major monuments.

Pequeño complejo residencial ubicado dentro del barrio Parque Rodó.

El trazado es del año 1913 y fue realizado por el arquitecto Eugenio P. Baroffio. Las construcciones que allí conviven datan de 1920 a 1970 y responden a distintos estilos arquitectónicos. Entre ellos se destacan la arquitectura moderna de influencia holandesa y náutica, el pintoresquismo y la arquitectura historicista y neocolonial.

A small residential complex nestling within the neighborhood of Rodó Park.

Its layout dates back to 1913 and it was constructed by architect Eugenio P. Baroffio. The buildings in this area were built between 1920 and 1970 and are in different architectural styles. The most characteristic of these are the modern style with Dutch and nautical influences, and picturesque, historicist and Neocolonial styles.

BARRIO REUS AL NORTE. Emilio Reus

Barrio ubicado en el noroeste de la ciudad. Se caracteriza por haber sido concebido como una unidad arquitectónica que se conserva en la actualidad.

De arquitectura modernista, el proyecto original data de 1888. Se trata de un emprendimiento de Emilio Reus como alternativa habitacional para los sectores populares de la época. En 1993 la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes restauró las fachadas.


BARRIO REUS AL NORTE. Emilio Reus

A neighborhood located in the northwestern area of the city, which was conceived as an architectural unit, still preserved to this day.

The original modernist architectural project dates back to 1888 and was an undertaking put forward by Emilio Reus in order to provide housing for the poorer sectors of the population. The National School of Fine Arts restored the area’s façades in 1993.

CENTRO, CIUDAD VIEJA. Plaza Independencia 710

Edificio de oficinas, actual sede de la Presidencia de la República, ubicado frente a la plaza Independencia.

De estilo moderno, con una gran fachada vidriada, concebido inicialmente como edificio para el Poder Judicial. El proyecto original data de 1963 y es de los arquitectos Barañano, Blumstein, Ferester y Rodríguez Orozco. Luego de varias adaptaciones, el edificio fue inaugurado en 2009.

An office building facing Independencia Square; the current headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic.

The style of the building is contemporary with a broad glass façade; it was initially planned as the seat of the Judicial Branch. The original project dates back to 1963 and was the work of architects Barañano, Blumstein, Ferester and Rodríguez Orozco. After several adaptations, the building was opened in 2009.

AGUADA. Avenida de las Leyes s/n

Imponente edificio emplazado en el extremo de la avenida Libertador Brig. Gral. J. A. Lavalleja, sede del Poder Legislativo uruguayo. Sus exteriores están recubiertos de distintos mármoles y su fachada principal cuenta con una gran escalinata. Estos elementos, además de cumplir funciones ornamentales, aportan la carga semántica representativa de las funciones democráticas del edificio.

Obra del arquitecto V. Meano, data de 1903. La adaptación es del arquitecto Vázquez Varela, la decoración del arquitecto G. Mortetti y los responsables de la construcción fueron los ingenieros J. Debernardis y M. Debernardis. El edificio fue inaugurado en 1925.

An imposing building located at the far end of avenida Libertador Brig. Gral. J. A. Lavalleja, it is the seat of Uruguay’s Parliament. Its outer walls are covered in different types of marble and a wide flight of steps leads up to the main façade. In addition to their ornamental purpose, these elements are endowed with a semantic significance that represents the democratic functions of the building.

It is the work of architect V. Meano and dates back to 1903. It was adapted by architect Vázquez Varela and the decorative elements are the work of architect G. Mortetti. Engineers J. Debernardis and M. Debernardis were responsible for its construction. The building was inaugurated in 1925.

Edificio de apartamentos, oficinas y comercios. De gran altura, hasta 1935 fue el edificio más alto de América del Sur. Cuenta con una amplia pasiva y su torre es un ícono de la ciudad de Montevideo.

Ubicado frente a la plaza Matriz, su planta baja está destinada a comercios y los dos pisos restantes a actividades propias. Cuenta con salas de juegos, de reuniones y comedores.

De estilo ecléctico, toma elementos del barroco, el neoclasicismo y el manierismo. Es obra del arquitecto Luigi Andreoni. El proyecto data de 1885 y la finalización de la obra se produjo en 1888.

This building faces Matriz Square. The first floor-–at ground level—is given over to commercial enterprises while the club’s activities take place on the two remaining floors. There are games rooms, as well as rooms for meetings and dining rooms.

The style of the building is eclectic, with elements of the Baroque, Neoclassicism and Mannerism. It was designed by architect Luigi Andreoni in 1885 and was finished in 1888.

CIUDAD VIEJA. Rambla 25 de Agosto de 1825 entre Maciel y Pérez Castellano

Importante edificio de oficinas ubicado en el puerto de Montevideo, sede de la Dirección Nacional de Aduanas. Se destacan la gran arcada de su fachada y su emblemática torre.

El edificio es obra del arquitecto Jorge Herrán y data del año 1923. La obra es considerada como previa al estilo moderno.

Edificio de oficinas sede de la Administración Nacional de Usinas y Transmisiones Eléctricas (UTE). Se destaca por su gran porte y sus líneas simples. Sus cuatro caras vidriadas reciben luz exterior. Por estar ubicado en una zona de construcciones más bajas se ha vuelto un punto referencial de la ciudad.

Es obra del arquitecto Román Fresnedo Siri, data de 1948 y fue inaugurado en 1951. Su referencia arquitectónica más evidente son los edificios norteamericanos de oficinas de la época.

AGUADA. Paraguay 2431

An office block that serves as headquarters to the National Administration of Power Plants and Electric Transmissions (UTE). It stands out for its imposing size and simple lines. Its four glass-covered sides are exposed to the sunlight. Because it is located in an area of lower buildings, it has become an easily visible landmark in the city.

It was designed by architect Román Fresnedo Siri in 1948 and was inaugurated in 1951. It is reminiscent of the architectural style of North American office buildings of the time.

043. FORTALEZA DEL CERRO

CERRO.

Fortificación de altos muros de piedra. Concebida para vigilar el puerto de la ciudad, está ubicada en la cumbre del Cerro de Montevideo, por lo que permite una vista privilegiada de la ciudad.

De estilo colonial, es obra del ingeniero militar José del Pozo y Marquy. Data de 1801 (farola y casa del vigía) y 1802-1809 (fortaleza).



CERRO.

A fortified building with high stone walls; it was constructed with the purpose of protecting the entrance to the port. Its position at the top of the hill known as Cerro de Montevideo affords an exceptional view of the city.

In the colonial style, it is the work of a military engineer, José del Pozo y Marquy. The lighthouse and lookout post were built in 1801 and the fortress in 1802-1809.

Edificio del Museo de Arte Precolombino e Indígena. Declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional por su valor patrimonial y urbanístico.

Construido a finales del siglo XIX por el doctor Emilio Reus, concebido originalmente como establecimiento médico hidrotermoterápico. De estilo ecléctico historicista, con influencias italianas, fue proyectado por los arquitectos ingenieros Parcus y Siegerist.

This building houses the Pre-Colombian and Indigenous Art Museum and was declared a National Historic Site because of its heritage and architectural value.

It was built in the late 19th century by Doctor Emilio Reus and was originally planned as a medical establishment to provide hydrothermal treatment. In an eclectic and historicist style with Italian influences, it was designed by architects and engineers Parcus and Siegerist.

Este edificio, ubicado en un lugar privilegiado de la rambla montevideana, fue originalmente un cabaré y luego un museo. Se destaca por su particular arquitectura y ornamentación de reminiscencias moriscas. Tiene un patio abierto de piso ajedrezado, galerías con arcadas y una torre que ya es parte de la iconografía de la ciudad.

De estilo seudomorisco, es obra del arquitecto José Mazzarra y data de 1929.



BUCEO. Rambla República de Chile 4225

This building is located on an exceptional site on the rambla of Montevideo; it was originally a nightclub and then became a museum. Its unique architecture and décor have a distinctly Moorish air. It features an open patio with a checkered floor, arched galleries and a tower that is well-established as one of the city’s landmarks.

The building, in a pseudo-Moorish style, was designed by architect José Mazzarra and dates back to 1929.

Esta casaquinta fue construida originalmente como vivienda unifamiliar. Emplazada en un gran predio, está rodeada de un parque con variadas especies vegetales, organizado de acuerdo con las pautas de la paisajística francesa de la época. Se destacan sus grandes terrazas, su patio interior con estanque y sus galerías.

Obra del ingeniero Juan A. Capurro, data de 1870 y su referencia arquitectónica más destacada son las villas palladianas.

This villa was originally built as a family home. Set in the midst of a large plot of land, it is surrounded by a park containing a variety of plants, organized according to the guidelines of the French style of landscape of the time. It features wide terraces, and an indoor patio with a pond and galleries.

The building—reminiscent of a Palladian villa—is the work of engineer Juan A. Capurro and dates back to 1870.

Ubicado en el Prado, este edificio de particular esplendor cuenta con tres salones para eventos. Está rodeado de jardines con faroles, estatuas y una fuente obra del escultor francés Henri Cordier.

El edificio de la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de la República se destaca por su fachada imponente y sobria en su ornamentación, la gran escalinata que conduce al hall principal y un patio central con estanque y anfiteatro. Las aulas están organizadas en galerías que bordean el patio. Sobresalen el diseño arquitectónico y el mobiliario de la biblioteca, ubicada en el primer piso.

Obra de los arquitectos R. Fresnedo Siri y M. Muccinelli, data de 1938 y fue inaugurada en 1946.

The building that houses the School of Architecture of the University of the Republic stands out for its imposing and austerely decorated façade, its broad flight of steps leading to the main hall, and its central courtyard with a pond and an amphitheater. Classrooms are laid out in galleries surrounding the courtyard. Its architectural design and the furnishings in the second-floor library are particularly noteworthy.

The building was designed by architects R. Fresnedo Siri and M. Muccinelli in 1938 and was inaugurated in 1946.

Ubicado en la principal avenida de la ciudad, el edificio sede de la Universidad de la República, el Rectorado y la Facultad de Derecho es un ícono de Montevideo. Consiste en una construcción perimetral con una amplia galería interior continua. Cuenta con dos amplios patios rectangulares rodeados por claustros. Se destacan la gran sala de actos, conocida como Paraninfo de la Universidad, y la biblioteca.

De estilo acorde con el renacimiento clásico, la obra fue inaugurada en 1911. Sus autores son los arquitectos Juan María Aubriot y Silvio Geranio.

On the city’s main street, this building, which houses the University of the Republic, the Rectorate and the Law School, is one of Montevideo’s landmarks. It consists of a courtyard-style construction with a broad and unbroken interior gallery and two spacious rectangular quadrangles surrounded by cloisters. Special features are the large assembly hall, known as the University Auditorium, and the library.

Built in classic Renaissance style, it was designed by architects Juan María Aubriot and Silvio Geranio and opened in 1911.

Este importante edificio sede de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de la República se caracteriza por la simetría en su diseño. Se ingresa por un gran hall central y en su interior se distribuyen aulas, laboratorios y un salón de actos ricamente ornamentado.

Obra del arquitecto Jacobo Vázquez Varela, quien tomó como modelo la Facultad de Medicina de París. Data de 1904-1910.

This imposing building, which houses the School of Medicine of the University of the Republic, is characterized by the symmetry of its design. The entry is through a large central hall, which leads to classrooms, laboratories and a richly ornamented auditorium.

Ubicado en el parque costero frente a la playa Ramírez, el edificio de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de la República luce una imponente y sobria fachada de hormigón armado. Se destaca por sus líneas simples y espacios amplios y funcionales, así como por la vista privilegiada por la elevación del terreno donde se ubica.

De estilo moderno, es obra del arquitecto Julio Vilamajó. El proyecto es de 1936 y la inauguración total ocurrió en 1953.

Located in a coastal park opposite Ramírez beach, the building that houses the School of Engineering of the University of the Republic exhibits an imposing and austere reinforced concrete façade. It features simple lines and wide and functional spaces, as well as an exceptional view, because of the high land on which it is sited.

Architect Julio Vilamajó designed this building in the modern style in 1936. It was fully completed and opened in 1953.

Edificio de instituto de educación secundaria con características muy particulares en cuanto a su diseño arquitectónico, en el que se destacan los dibujos geométricos formados por las tejas cerámicas del techo. Las aulas se distribuyen alrededor de dos patios abiertos. Cuenta con un observatorio astronómico y un gran patio trasero con canchas de básquetbol.

De estilo modernista ecléctico, es obra del arquitecto Alfredo Jones Brown y data de 1911.

This building, in which a secondary education institute is housed, displays unique features in its architectural design, particularly evident in the geometrical pattern formed by the ceramic tiles of its rooftops. Classrooms are distributed around two open courtyards. There is also an astronomical observatory and a large open area at the back with basketball courts.

In an eclectic modernist style, the building was designed by architect Alfredo Jones Brown in 1911.

El complejo WTC Montevideo está compuesto por cuatro torres, dos edificaciones de tres niveles denominadas WTC Plaza y WTC Avenida, y una gran plaza central llamada Plaza de las Torres en la que se destaca su Paseo de Esculturas. Principalmente alberga oficinas, pero cuenta también con una zona de restaurantes y otros comercios.

Los autores son los arquitectos E. Kimelman y D. R. Flom. El inicio del proyecto data de 1992.

WTC Montevideo complex is composed of four towers, two three-storey buildings called WTC Plaza and WTC Avenida and a large central square called Towers Square, whose Sculptures Avenue stands out. The towers are essentially office blocks but the complex also features a gastronomic area as well as commercial facilities.

The buildings were designed by architects E. Kimelman and D. R. Flom. The project dates back to 1992.

Edificio que alberga las oficinas del gobierno de Montevideo. Cuenta con salas de actos, exposiciones, un mirador panorámico de la ciudad y una gran explanada para actividades públicas.

Obra del arquitecto Mauricio Cravotto, el proyecto data del año 1929 y se concretó en 1940.

This building houses the offices of the municipal government of Montevideo. It also includes auditoriums, exhibition halls, a lookout point over the city and a wide esplanade used for public activities.

Architect Mauricio Cravotto drew the plans for the building in 1929, but it was not built until 1940.

Edificio de oficinas de la empresa Antel. Cuenta con un anfiteatro al aire libre y un auditorio cerrado.

La obra es de los arquitectos Ott, Rocca, Baruzze y Aguiar, data de 1997 y fue inaugurada en 2003. El complejo está compuesto por varios edificios de distintas alturas, en los que se destacan los materiales y el diseño contemporáneos.

The offices of ANTEL, the state-owned telecommunications company. It includes an open-air amphitheater and an indoor auditorium.

Edificio de la Intendencia de Montevideo construido como mercado para la comercialización de productos agrícolas.

La obra de los arquitectos A. Vázquez y S. Geranio data de 1905 y se inauguró en 1913. El diseño está inspirado en el mercado de Les Halles de París. Se caracteriza por su estructura metálica y su ornamentación.

A building belonging to the municipality which was planned as a market for the sale of agricultural produce.

TRES CRUCES. Avenida Italia y bulevar Artigas

Desde su construcción y hasta hoy es el edificio del Hospital Italiano. Se destaca por su gran escalinata, sus galerías abiertas, sus patios internos y los espacios verdes que lo rodean.

Obra del ingeniero Luigi Andreoni, data de 1890. Sus referencias más claras son la arquitectura italiana del siglo XVI y posiblemente la Galleria degli Uffizi de Giorgio Vasari en Florencia.



TRES CRUCES. Avenida Italia and bulevar Artigas

This building has always housed the Italian Hospital. It features a broad flight of steps, open galleries and inner courtyards surrounded by green areas.

It is the work of an engineer, Luigi Andreoni, who designed it in 1890 in a clear reference to 16th century Italian architecture and, possibly, to Giorgio Vasari’s Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence.

CIUDAD VIEJA. Juan Carlos Gómez y Sarandí

Edificio del Cabildo y las Reales Cárceles de Montevideo. Actualmente funciona como museo. Ubicado en la plaza Matriz, frente a la catedral, es un ícono de la ciudad. Se destacan su patio interior y sus escalinatas.

De estilo neoclásico español, es obra del arquitecto Tomás Tobio y el proyecto data de 1804.



CIUDAD VIEJA. Juan Carlos Gómez and Sarandí

This building was constructed as Montevideo’s Cabildo (Town Council) and Royal Prison and it is, at present, a museum. Located on Matriz Square, opposite the Cathedral, it is a landmark in the city. It features an inner patio and wide staircases.

Architect Tomás Toribio designed the building in 1804, in the Spanish Neoclassical style.

CIUDAD VIEJA. Cerrito 351 entre Zabala y Solís

Emplazada en el centro del distrito comercial de Montevideo se encuentra la sede del Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay. Se destacan su escalinata y columnas, así como su gran hall y la nobleza de los materiales utilizados en su construcción.

El proyecto de 1916 es de los arquitectos J. Veltroni y J. Genovese, con referencias claras al neoclasicismo.

CIUDAD VIEJA. Cerrito 351 between Zabala and Solís

The headquarters of the Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay, a state bank, is in the midst of Montevideo’s commercial district. It is noted for its wide flight of steps and its rows of columns, as well as its spacious hall and the rich materials used in the building.

Architects J. Veltroni and J. Genovese drew up the plans in 1916, with obvious Neoclassical allusions.

Inaugurado en 1955, fue el primer planetario de Iberoamérica. El edificio, creado con la finalidad de acercar la astronomía a la ciudadanía, se encuentra emplazado en el predio del zoológico de Villa Dolores, rodeado de espacios verdes.

PUNTA GORDA. Mar Mediterráneo entre General Paz y Mar Antátrico

Vivienda familiar concebida como dos unidades independientes, declarada Bien de Interés Municipal. Se caracteriza por ser representativa de una época de la arquitectura uruguaya y por conservar su mobiliario original, diseñado por los arquitectos autores de la obra.

La obra data de 1960 y es obra de los arquitectos Otilia Muras y Héctor Giraldi.



PUNTA GORDA. Mar Mediterráneo between General Paz and Mar Antátrico

A family dwelling designed as two independent units, it has been declared a Municipal Interest Property. It is noted for representing a particular era of Uruguayan architecture and for preserving its original furnishings, designed by the same architects who designed the house.

The building is the work of architects Otilia Muras and Héctor Giraldi and dates back to 1960.

Edificio de viviendas y comercios. Concebido en cuatro niveles, es uno de los primeros ejemplos de viviendas populares realizadas por Rossell y Rius. Está compuesto por 88 unidades organizadas en torno a un gran patio techado con claraboya.

Obra del constructor Alberto Brignoni, el proyecto es de 1911-1912.

Espacios de uso común a los apartamentos.

An apartment block that also includes commercial enterprises. It was planned on four levels and is one of the earliest examples of the populist dwellings constructed by Rossell y Rius. The building includes 88 units surrounding a large indoor courtyard covered by a skylight.

It was built in 1911-1912 and is the work of a builder, Alberto Brignoni.

Campo de golf ubicado frente al Río de la Plata. Además de ser un espacio verde privilegiado, cuenta con gimnasios, piscina abierta y cerrada, canchas de tenis, fútbol y salones para eventos.

El diseño de la cancha de golf es obra del doctor Alister Mackenzie y data de 1930.

Hipódromo ubicado en el norte de la ciudad. Allí se desarrollan las carreras hípicas más importantes.

En 1874 se construyó en el mismo lugar el primer hipódromo de Montevideo. En 1909 el arquitecto Jacobo Vázquez Varela diseñó un nuevo palco de socios, que fue rediseñado en 1920 por los arquitectos Fernando Capurro y Emilio Rodie. Posteriormente el arquitecto Román Fresnedo Siri diseñó la tribuna Folle Ylla en 1938 y el local Tribuna en 1945.

A horse racetrack located in the north area of the city where most horse races take place.

Montevideo’s first horse racetrack was built in the same area in 1874. In 1909 architect Jacobo Vázquez Varela designed a new box for members which was redesigned in 1920 by architects Fernando Capurro and Emilio Rodie. Later, architect Román Fresnedo Siri designed the Folle Ylla grandstand in 1938 and the Local Tribuna in 1945.

Next to the harbor, this breakwater is the extension of the pedestrian street bearing the same name. There is a spectacular view of the Old Town and the harbor and it is a meeting place for fishing lovers.

It was built by engineer Adolfo Guérard in 1899. Acondicionamiento Urbano de la Intendencia de Montevideo (The Urban Conservation Division of Montevideo City Hall) made improvements in 2006.

It is the most important theater in Montevideo and a city landmark. Some remarkable features are its large plaza, its open galleries with checkered floors and the ornamentation of its house which resembles the Scala di Milano.

Given its formal characteristics, the architectural style is Neoclassical. The original project was developed by architect C. Zucchi in 1837.

Es un pequeño teatro ubicado en el Centro de Montevideo que cuenta con capacidad para 310 espectadores. Se destaca la ornamentación de la sala y el hall.

La sala fue inaugurada en 1894. El estilo neoclásico original, obra del ingeniero John Adams, ha sido modificado principalmente en la fachada.

La actual Sala Zitarrosa fue inaugurada en 1999, en el edificio que pertenecía al cine Rex. Se destaca la convivencia de su equipamiento moderno con molduras y mármoles de la década de 1920.

De estilo modernista, es obra del arquitecto Alfredo Jones Brown y se realizó entre 1926 y 1928.

The present Zitarrosa Hall was inaugurated in 1999, in the building that previously housed the Rex Cinema. It is noted for the coexistence of its modern fittings with the moldings and marbles of the 1920s.

Architect Alfredo Jones Brown designed the building in the modernist style and it was constructed between 1926 and 1928.

El edificio inaugurado en 2009 es obra del arquitecto Rafael Viñoly.

A passenger railway station. The nearby harbor and its environs add a special character to this modern two-storey terminal.

PEÑAROL. Aparicio Saravia, avenida Sayago, Shakespeare, Coronel Raíz

Estación ferroviaria. La plaza de la estación, donde se ubica la antigua fuente de los Ingleses, ha sido recientemente remozada y cuenta con pista de skate y juegos para niños.

Declarada Monumento Histórico Nacional, la estación comenzó a funcionar en 1891. Con claras influencias de la arquitectura ferrocarrilera inglesa, es obra de la empresa inglesa Ferrocarril Central del Uruguay.

A railway station. The station’s square, where the old Ingleses fountain is located, has been recently refurbished and it features a skateboard rink and games for children.

The station that started operations in 1891 has been declared a National Historic Landmark. Built by the Central Uruguay Railway Company, a British company, it clearly reflects the British railway station architecture.

Viaducto ubicado en zona comercial del barrio Paso Molino. Construido para agilizar el tránsito vehicular que ingresa a Montevideo desde el norte.

La obra data de 1970.

This viaduct is located over the commercial district of Paso Molino neighborhood. It was built with the aim of facilitating traffic flow and access to Montevideo for vehicles coming from the north area of the city.

The project was executed in 1970.

Restaurante y bar. Ubicado en el ala este del teatro Solís, se destaca por la elegancia clásica de su ambientación y mobiliario, acorde con la arquitectura y el entorno de la Ciudad Vieja. Cuenta además con cava, bar, terraza y ballroom.

De estilo neoclásico, fue inaugurado en 1856. Entre 1998 y 2009 se realizaron obras de acondicionamiento del edifico que incluyeron el ala que alberga al restaurante.

A restaurant and a bar. Located in the east wing of the Solís Theater, its classically stylish décor and furnishings in line with the atmosphere and the typical architectural style of the Ciudad Vieja (Old Town) are especially noteworthy. It features a wine cellar, a bar, a large balcony and a ballroom.

In a Neoclassical style, the theater was inaugurated in 1856. Between 1998 and 2009 the building was refurbished and the works included the wing which houses the restaurant.

Café, bar y restaurante. Antiguamente funcionaba como bar y almacén. Se conserva parte del viejo mobiliario, así como la fachada, lo que le imprime un espíritu particular a esta típica esquina. Cuenta con tres áreas diferenciadas.

Inaugurado en 1919, es un vivo ejemplo de lo que fueron los bares-almacenes que antiguamente se encontraban en todos los barrios de Montevideo.

A café, a bar and a restaurant. In the past it was a bar and a general store. Part of the old furniture and the façade remain, which brings a special charm to this traditional corner. There are three clearly differentiated areas.

Opened in 1919, it is a living example of the blend of bar and general store which used to fill every neighborhood of Montevideo in the past.

Centro comercial desde 1994; hasta 1986 fue el edificio de la cárcel de Punta Carretas. El actual shopping cuenta con más de 100 locales, cines, plaza de comidas, entre otros servicios.

El edificio original de la cárcel es obra del arquitecto Domingo Sanguinetti y el proyecto data de 1905. El reciclaje para convertirlo en centro comercial es obra de los arquitectos J. C. López y Asoc. S. A. y arquitecto C. Rodríguez.

A shopping mall since 1994. The building used to house the Punta Carretas prison until 1986. The current shopping mall features over 100 stores, cinemas, a food court and other facilities.

The building of the former prison was designed by architect Domingo Sanguinetti in 1905. Architects J. C. López y Asoc. S. A. and C. Rodríguez refurbished it into a shopping mall.

Librería ubicada en un edificio icónico de la Ciudad Vieja, antiguamente sede del primer Instituto Óptico Oculístico del país. Se destacan sus grandes vitrinas bombé y su escalera de mármol, por la cual se accede al primer piso, donde funciona una pequeña cafetería y bar.

La obra data de 1917 y el autor es el arquitecto Leopoldo J. Tosi, quien utilizó un lenguaje ecléctico de la belle époque, integrando el neoclasicismo y el art nouveau.

A bookshop in one of the landmark buildings of the Ciudad Vieja (Old Town), which previously housed the first Optical and Ophthalmology Institute in the country. It features large, bowed display windows and a marble staircase leading to the second floor, with a small cafeteria and bar.

Architect Leopoldo J. Tosi designed the building in 1917, in an eclectic Belle Époque style, including Neoclassical and Art Nouveau elements.

La Oficina de Locaciones Montevideanas actúa como interlocutor en la solicitud de permisos para la utilización de locaciones. La tarea de esta oficina es de articulación y coordinación, pero la concesión de un permiso de rodaje corresponde al organismo del que depende la locación o a sus propietarios. Los responsables de las locaciones establecen las condiciones de uso, de acuerdo con las características de estas y del rodaje. Todo uso está sujeto a disponibilidad.

Montevideo Locations Office serves as a mediator in the process of requesting permission to use locations. This office’s task involves interaction and coordination; however, it is the agency responsible for the location, or its owners, that grant filming permits. The persons responsible for the locations will determine their conditions of use, in accordance with the characteristics of each location and of the shoot. The use of any location will be subject to availability.
