Grapes, citrus, stone fruits and vegetables are harvested along the Murray River each year. Jobs include picking, packing, pruning and other general
harvest work. The jobs can include climbing ladders, standing, kneeling or sitting while moving through the crop. The work is often repetitious and tiring
and can, depending on location, be in dry and dusty or cold and damp conditions. Start time is usually from early morning and often long into the day.
The crop is often picked into tubs, buckets or placed in a bag strapped to the picker or picked into bundles and placed onto trays or into bins. Some sorting
and packing jobs are also required. These can involve working later in the day after the crop has been harvested.

areas and the jobs available. This can be viewed at you local MADEC harvest office.

harvest workers start early in the day before it gets too hot. The work is not heavy but is repetitious and tiring and often carried out in hot conditions.
Harvest workers, therefore need to be fit and active and have the discipline to “stick to the task”. Working couples are readily accepted, but if children
accompany parents, your own accommodation is preferable as families become difficult to place on properties. Grower prefer harvest workers to be at least
16 years old.

Picking
Corboy Fresh Fruit's harvest season peaks at mid-late
January when approximately 150-200 extra fruit pickers
will be needed. Crops to be harvested are Peaches, Pears,
Nectarines, Plums and Apples.
Fruit picking is hard work and it can be extremely hot in
the paddock. Appropriate clothing should be worn e.g.
long sleeve cotton shirt, light weight slacks,trousers,shorts
and a wide soft brimmed hat must be worn. Solid work
boots with ankle support is also recommended as the
ground may be uneven. Sunscreen must be worn.
Fruit is picked, according to instructions, using a ladder to
climb to the fruit and a picking bag is worn strapped to the
shoulders, fruit is placed in the bag then carefully emptied
into the fruit bin supplied. Fruit is picked either to colour,
size or strip picked (taking all fruit on the tree).
Payment is made per bin of fruit picked.
All employees are trained in the correct methods in which
to pick fruit. An experienced person will conduct a
training session prior to you commencing your
employment or on the day you start. It is important to
listen carefully and carry out instructions.
You will find that there are tricks to the trade e.g. where to
carry and place your ladder to obtain most benefit, how to
wear your picking bag correctly etc., when you become
familiar with the skill of fruit picking, the benefits will
become apparent with a good quality fruit and a higher bin
tally for you, resulting in more money in your pocket at
the end of the week, with less effort.
You will be supervised by an experienced picker called a
ganger. Any problems must be reported to this person.
There are different requirements needed to pick each
variety of fruit. All fruit needs care when being picked to
reduce bruising and other damage.
Each casual fruit picker will be issued with an Information
Booklet which states in further detail what is expected.
Corboy Fresh Fruit Pty Ltd is a family owned business
comprising fruit growing, packing and export & domestic
sales, established in1980 by Mr John Corboy and his wife
Kerry. Since that time, together with their sons they have
built one of Australia's larger horticultural operations
including 860 acres of orchard and a large packing/cool-

Koogie Downs Strawberry Farm is one of the oldest

WHEN ARE THE JOBS?
A large number of fruit pickers (up to 140 per day) are
required during our fruit picking season in the mid
January to late March/April period each year.
We may also have vacancies for experienced tractor
drivers.
WHAT CROPS?

PAYMENT
Fruit pickers are paid on a piece-work system (rates are
approved by the government authorities, growers and
unions)so the more fruit you pick the more you earn.
There is no guaranteed minimum wage for most fruit
pickers on our farm.
WHO ARE THE WORKERS?
We have a large number of fruit pickers from all over
Australia and many parts of the world.
To work with us you must be an Australian Citizen or an
Australian permanent resident, the holder of a New
Zealand Passport or have an Australian visa that allows
employment.
WHAT IS THE JOB LIKE?
Picking is generally done from steel ladders, so you need
to be fairly healthy as there is a fair bit of carrying, lifting
and walking.
The fruit is picked into a bag which is slung over your
shoulders in a harness fashion and then emptied into the
'bin'. The bin holds the equivalent of 22 cases of fruit, so it
can take some time to fill a bin up.
If you are new to fruit picking you may find it fairly
difficult to begin with, but within a couple of days you
will find that your daily bin numbers are likely to increase
as you develop better technique.
INDUCTION
Before you start working on our orchard you will be
instructed in the correct and safe techniques of using a
picking ladder and other aspects of fruit picking.
SUITABLE WORK CLOTHES
Because it is generally warm you should dress for the
environment. A long sleeved shirt is recommended. Boots
or shoes with a firm sole will protect your feet. Thongs or
bare feet are not acceptable. Sun screen is advisable for
protection from the sun and hats are compulsory.
ACCOMMODATION
We have fully catered accommodation in 2 - 3 bed rooms
and a camping area for those with tents. We also have a
caravan park for those with their own vans and
motorhomes.

Silvan Estate Raspberries is one hours drive East of
Melbourne in the picturesque Dandenong Ranges. The
farm setting has a most impressive, panoramic outlook to
the Black Snake Ranges.
Employment
Seasonal work is available for fruit pickers from early
December to the end of April. We welcome fruit pickers
with and without experience. All fruit picking depends on
fine dry weather and most days start early to avoid the
high Summer heat.
All workers must have a Tax File Number.
You must have Working Holiday Visa if you are from
overseas.
We make a direct payment of your wages into your bank
account and provide you with a pay slip.
Rate of pay
We pay by the weight of berries picked. We take into
consideration the wholesale market price we receive, plus
we consider the condition of the crop.
The Season commences late November and continues
through into April. We prefer you to stay a minimum of 3
or 4 weeks.
Can I stay at the farm?
You can set up a tent or campervan. We do provide some
onsite caravan accommodation.
There is a shared kitchen and shower facilities and we
charge a small fee for the use of the facilities.

HARVEST SEASON
The blueberry harvest season runs from late
December to mid March each year.
The main focus of the business is export with all
blueberries destined for these markets hand harvested.
This is a labour intensive operation and requires large
numbers of pickers.
Work commences at approximately 7.00am each morning
Monday to Friday or as the weather permits.
Hand harvest usually concludes at 1.00pm to 2.00 pm as
the weather is usually too hot for harvest after this time.
Blueberries cannot be harvested wet therefore any dew or
rain must not be present. We are unable to control the
weather and therefore no harvest will be possible on rainy
days.
The packing shed is also in operation at this time which
sees all the days hand harvested fruit packed as well as
machine harvested fruit processed . The packing shed is
operated in shifts by a number of different staff. A
rotating shift is utilised that sees different tasks
undertaken on rotating days. These shifts are made up at
the start of the season and are on a first in basis. A priority
list is then established to take the place of those that leave
or do not meet the picking criteria. This criterion is based
upon a minimum picking volume and ensures good
pickers are rewarded with ongoing work.
The operating hours of the packing shed are usually 8.30
am to 6.00 pm.
PICKING
Picking blueberries is not difficult with all work carried
out from the ground. The trees are no more than two
meters tall and are easily accessed.
There are no thorns or any other impediment to the picker.
The fruit is grown in clusters with the fruit ripening
gradually within each cluster.
Each tree is picked a number of times over the season
with only the ripe fruit removed each time.
As with any fruit picking not everyone is suited to the
task. Some people will find that they are unable to pick
reasonable volumes of fruit.
It does however take a few days to master the picking
technique.
To enable a satisfactory wage pickers need to be dedicated
to the task and work undistracted.
Experience has also shown that females are far better at
picking than males due to their dexterity and application
to the job.
This however does not rule out all males as some of our
best pickers in recent years have in fact been male.
Pickers are assigned to a team each with its own team
leader. Teams have their own rows and varieties to pick.
The team leader is accountable for the quantity and
quality harvested by their team.
The most effective picking method identified to date is to
pick into a two litre container tied around the waist
(allowing the use of two hands) and when full carefully
placing the fruit from the container into a ten litre bucket.
At regular intervals the fruit is picked up from the end of
the picking row where it is identified to the picker, tipped
from the bucket into a bar coded tray and then transported
to the packing shed where the blueberries are weighed,
graded and packed.
Each picker is issued with a numbered and bar coded card
that is scanned at the time of pick up. The card is scanned
together with the tray the fruit is tipped into which allows
later identification.
WAGES
Picking is paid on piece rates of $3.00/kg for export
quality fruit.
The average serious picker should be able to pick
approximately 5 kgs per hour of export quality fruit.
Processed grade fruit is paid at the rate of $0.50 per kg
however pickers are discouraged from picking anything
other than export grade fruit. Picking any volume of
process grade fruit will be uneconomical for the picker
and picked consistently will result in the picker being
asked to leave.
Shed work and any other tasks are paid by the hour. The
adult wage is $14.85 per hour.
Payment of wages will be by way of electronic transfer to
each individuals bank account. To enable payment it is
critically important to have correct banking details that
include a 6 digit BSB and Account Number. For accuracy
it is best obtain this from a deposit slip or bank book.
The pay week runs from Wednesday to Tuesday with
funds available on or before Friday of each week.
All employees are required to complete a Government
Employment Declaration together with a Tumbarumba
Blueberry Producers Application for Employment Form
and Work Place Agreement.
All employees are required to have a tax file number,
Australian Residency or an Australian Government
approved working visa.
The harvest season is a minimum of 10 weeks long and
preference is given to people who are interested in staying
for the full season.
FACILITIES and ACCOMMODATION
The main location for accommodation is at the
Tumbarumba Creek Caravan Park which is located beside
the Tumbarumba Creek in Tumbarumba
This is a very picturesque location and offers excellent
facilities onsite and is within a very short walk of the town
centre where there are the usual supermarkets, takeaway,
chemist, clothing stores, hotels etc.
Sporting facilities and activities within walking distance
of the Caravan Park include: Swimming at the town pool
across the road from the park; Golf on the 9 hole course;
Tennis courts are available for hire; Netball and basketball
courts are beside the park; Cricket and baseball fields are
across the road; Fishing in the creek that runs through the
park and in Mannus lake a short drive away; Squash
courts are available for hire; Table tennis, badminton and
volleyball are all available at the Caravan Park
The facilities at the blueberry orchard include clean
amenities, fresh drinking water, shady areas and also drink
and food vending machines.
Important items for blueberry picking include sturdy
footwear, long sleeved top and protection from the sun.
Packing shed workers will be required to wear enclosed
footwear and appropriate clothing for a controlled
atmosphere packing room.
